They have a short history in North America. Here are some facts about house sparrows. The house sparrow was introduced into Brooklyn, New York, in 1851. By 1900 it had spread to the Rocky Mountains. Two more introductions in the early 1870s, in San Francisco and Salt Lake City, aided the bird's spread throughout the West. House sparrows are now common across all of North America except Alaska and far northern Canada. The house sparrow takes frequent dust baths. It throws soil and dust over its body feathers, just as if it were bathing with water. In doing so, a sparrow may make a small depression (凹陷)in the ground, and sometimes defends this spot against other sparrows. The house sparrow prefers to nest in man-made structures such as lower edges of their roofs or walls of buildings, street lights, and nest boxes instead of in natural nest sites such as holes in trees.House sparrows are social birds and they have a pecking (啄食)order much the way chickens in a farmyard do. You can find out the standings by paying attention to the black throats of the males. Males with larger patches of black tend to be older and dominant over males with less black. By wearing this information on their feathers, sparrows can avoid some fights and thereby save energy.1.What can we know about house sparrows?A. They are native to New York.B - They are a new species of birds.C.They are foreign to North America.D.They are seen in all parts of the world.2.In which place are you least likely to see house sparrows?A. New York.B. Alaska.C. San Francisco.D. Canada.3.Which can replace the underlined words "dominant over” ?A. surprised atB. curious aboutC. popular withD. superior toBEach year, people buy millions of aquarium (水族箱)fish. But somehow most of the fish died within weeks or even within hours after you had bought them. For sure, fish are weak creatures compared to us. It does not mean they died for no reason at all.Since fish have no body heat, they are sensitive to sudden changes of water temperature. Water PH and water hardness can also affect them if there is a sudden change. Most of the quick deaths of fish are due to shock.Tap water is not a perfect choice for aquarium fish because of the chlorine (氯)in the tap water, which can kill the fish. So the best way is to just put the tap water in the sun for a few days.Fish need oxygen in the water. They will die if the oxygen in the aquarium runs out. Several things can cause it to happen. The aquarium is too small, that is, less water means less oxygen. The aquarium is too crowded, for the more fish you have, the more oxygen they need. The temperature is too high, because the higher the water temperature, the less dissolvedoxygen.Overfeeding the fish can cause a digestive (消化的)More food than it is needed can also cause waterpollution which will kill the fish too. Feed the fish onlyonce a day, with no more food than they can eat in less than a minute. In this case, less isbetter.4 .Whafs the function of paragraph one?A. Raising a question.B. Putting forward an argument.C. Posing a problem.D. Listing the causes of the problem.5 .Why are fish sensitive to sudden changes of water temperature?A. They are warm-blooded.B ・ They have no body heat.C. They live in the water.D. They are very weak.6 .Whafs the purpose of putting tap water in the sun?A. To let out the chlorine.B ・ To warm the water.C. To kill the viruses.D - To make the water clear.7 .How is the passage mainly developed?A. Problem-solution pattern.B ・ Question-answer pattern.C. On a day in Arkansas, some fishermen saw a bear cub (幼兽) in a tree. As hours went by, its mother didn't return. So they called wildlife biologist (生物学家) Eastridge. The bear cub was sick and hungry, weighing only 5 pounds and with his eyes not completely open. Eastridge called Lisa Stewart, who works at Appalachian Bear Rescue in Tennessee. Stewart always makes room for a new cub.She named the bear Miracle because she thought it was a miracle that he had survived! As soon as she could, she stopped having contact with the cub so he would not become too used to humans. When the cub arrived, Stewart cleaned his eyes and put him in a house alone. Since Miracle was already 5 months old, Stewart gave him bowls of food and another bowl of a special formula (配方奶粉), similar to a bear mother's milk. Sometimes, Miracle would reach his head out of his house and takesome formula or food. But he wasn't eating too much.Miracle was too weak to be with other bears. So Stewart gave him a toy bear named Buddy. He took it into his house and covered it with straw (稻草). He fed Buddy, too. Stewart often found the toy covered in formula and berries and its ears full of apple chunks. Now that Miracle had Buddy, he came out of his house more often and wanted to eat. After two months, Stewart introduced Miracle to other bears so they could learn from one another. She avoided any direct contact with Miracle and the other bears. Stewart wanted to make sure they stayed afraid of humans so they could go back into the wild again. She always hid behind a fence (栅栏) and threw food over the top secretly. The bears hunted for this food as they would soon do in the wild.Five months later, Rick Eastridge returned to pick up a healthy 90pound Miracle and another bear from Arkansas named Rocky. Eastridge loaded the bears into boxes on his truck and transported them back to the wild. As soon as the bear boxes were opened, the two cubs ran for the woods—where they belonged.【1】A toy bear was given to Miracle in order to .A.remind him not to waste his foodB.kill his lonely time in his houseC.develop his skills of making friendsD.rid Miracle of its fear of humans【2】Why did Stewart always give food to Miracle in secret?A.Because he could learn how to find food in the wild.B.Because he was too weak to be frightened by humans.C.Because a good relationship could be developed.D.Because she didn't want to disturb his peaceful life.【3】What is the best title for this passage?A.An Unusual BearB.The Growth of MiracleC.Rescuing MiracleD.Contacting Miracle【答案】【1】B【2】A【3】C【解析】本文是一篇记叙文。

[A]My first Glastonbury was in 2005. The year of rain and mud (泥)! We took off our shoes and danced in it up to our knees! I loved it! I've now been six times! This year's festival was fantastic — I didn't want to go home. The best part for me was an Icelandic band (乐队) called Sigur Ros. I'd never heard of them, but I loved their music.— Marina M, Scotland Well, I don't know what to say — my second time, and it was the most amazing experience! I'm now sitting at work thinking about the best four days of my life. We didn't see any rubbish bands, and the DJs rocked all night. We saw the sun rise at 5 on Sunday morning — an amazing experience. Only one thing — there were so many mobile phones. Why? I thought Glastonbury was about getting away from it all.— Dave Chow, London I've taken my kids to Glastonbury twice. It really is an education for kids. The atmosphere (气氛) is amazing. I think this is because of the mix of people of all ages. It's great to see them — from very young kids and teenagers, to people my parents' age and older. Everyone gets on so well. On Saturday night we watched Radiohead with my 11-year-old son, and the crowd moved back so he could see better. We loved everything.— Len Ferris, Gloucester This was my first year at Glastonbury. I travelled 10,000 miles to be there. I've been to other festivals in Australia and Europe. I went to the Sonar Festivalin Barcelona two years ago — it was great, but I've always wanted to cometo Glastonbury. It was amazing. Izzi.[B]It was a surprise to me that I ended up working in an animal testing lab. I've been a vegetarian (素食者) most of my life and I wanted to be a teacher when I was younger. Animal testing wasn't something I saw in my future.I've always cared deeply about animals. My parents stopped eating meat because they disliked the way animals were farmed and killed, and I felt the same way. Then I met a friend who tested drugs that might go on to be used for humans.I was interested in his field of work; the more he told me, the more I understood and believed in it. After a few months, I got a job in his field. One day, I asked to see where the animals were kept. In the back of my mind I saw pictures of cats and monkeys in pain. But in fact they were bright-eyed and pleased to see us. Everything was clean and they all seemed happy. There were play areas with toys. The workers talked to the animals and petted them. Seeing them strengthened (增强) my opinion that I was doing the right thing for the right reasons.I was quite comfortable telling close friends where I worked, although at first I told only people I thought would be sympathetic. As time went on, I got more relaxed about whom I told. People sometimes pulled faces but often they just wanted to know what was going on in my workplace. However, there're still some people who think we're murderers. But having a group of people so set against you can make you become more determined (坚定的).I thought: “I'm doing the right thing.” I was proud of my job in an animal testing lab, helping to test out potentially (潜在地) life-saving drugs.25. Understanding.[C]Angus, Doris, Gabriel and Kamil are some of the 21 names that have been chosen to be given to storms in the UK in the 2016/17 season. The Met Office, the UK's national weather service, decided to give storms boys' and girls' names in 2015 in the same way as they did in America. The Met Office hopes that naming big storms will mean people are more aware (意识到) of them and how dangerous they can be. Derrick Ryall, from the Met Office, said, “We have seen how naming storms elsewhere in the world raises people'sawar eness of storms before they break.”In the past, the same UK storm could be given different names by different organisations. “We noticed that many organisations during the last couple of winters, when we have had bad storms, started giving names to them. Think back to the St Jude's Day storm in 2013, and the so-called Hurricane Bawbag in Scotland in 2011. But it led to confusion (混乱),” a Met Office spokeswoman said.According to the Met Office, there is a name for each letter of the whole alphabet (字母表), except for Q, U, X, Y and Z. That is the same as the naming tradition used in America. And not all storms will be big enough to get names — only those expected to cause great damage (损失).If there are more than 21 storms in a year, the Met Office will start again with another name beginning with “A”. However, according to Met Office spokeswoman Lindsay Mears, “It's unlikely we would get through the whole alphabet in one season. We had 14 storms in the very bad winter of 2013/14, and if the naming system had been in operation then we wouldn't have used the whole alphabet.”28. Why are storms in the UK named?A. To increase public awareness of them.B. To remind people of their short stay.C. To follow what other countries did.D. To meet the needs of its people.29. Examples are given in Paragraph 4 to show ______.A. there're many storms to name in a yearB. organisations named storms differentlyC. some storms' names are similar to others'D. some storms' names are hard to understand30. What do we know about the names given to storms?A. Storms will be given names whatever their sizes.B. Serious storms will be given boys' names.C. 21 letters will be used to begin the names.D. 21 names will be given at most in a year.31. What can be learned from Lindsay Mears?A. There are not too many big storms yearly.B. Action will be taken to prevent storms.C. There are usually 14 storms in a year.D. The naming system will not change.[D]If you go to Hollywood and look around the coffee shops and restaurants, it is unlikely that you will meet your favorite film star. However, it is almost certain that you will meet Dennis Woodruff.Dennis is a “film” star — well, sort of. You learn this quickly because he tells everyone he meets about this. He wears a T-shir t that says “Dennis Woodruff,world-famous actor”. He also hands out videotapes of his films for $10.Dennis describes himself as Hollywood's best-known out-of-work actor. He has been looking for work for 25 years. It is true that he has been on television over 300 times and has worked in about 45 films, as an extra (临时演员) of course.“Actually, I'm a film star. It's just that no one has realized it yet,” says Dennis. You can watch him auditioning (试演) for parts in front of the security cameras (监控摄像头) at local restaurants. People recognize him and then, sadly, ignore (不理会) him.One of the saddest tales he tells is about how he nearly made the big time. The famous actor John Wayne was going to give him a chance, but unfortunately he died. The famous producer Otto Preminger wanted to make him a star. He also died.Dennis first had the idea of selling himself over 20 years ago when he asked a director why he had been refused for a part. “Because you're not a big namein Hollywood,” came the answer. Dennis immedi ately wrote his name in huge letters on the top of his car. It didn't get him any work, but it did get him noticed.Dennis has set up a production company with his brother, and he has sold 15,000 copies of his videos. True success, he feels, is just around the corner.32. What do we know about Dennis from Paragraph 2?A. He is hugely popular.B. He tries to sell himself.C. He has produced many films.D. He is easy to make friends with.33. What is people's reaction to Dennis' behavior at local restaurants?A. They cheer him on.B. They try to follow him.C. They pay no attention to him.D. D.Parents.BI took a trip to visit New York with my dad after graduating from high school. One of the places on his list for us to visit was a “rare violin shop”.We made our way down the crowded streets and stopped in front of a tall building. This building was not what I had pictured.I'd been imagining a street-level shop, open to the public, with some interesting and older violins on display. As we walked inside, we were greeted by a receptionist who asked if we had an appointment, since they were by appointment only.I wanted the ground to swallow me whole and was about to waive the visit. But my dad eagerly told them that no, and he sincerely explained that I played the violin with my high school orchestra and we would love to just pop inside and browse! The receptionist gave us an odd look but excused herself to talk to a well-dressed man.Luckily, the man told us that since he had no other appointments right now, he would love to give us a tour! The starting price for a violin here, we found out, was 10k.He showed us around a very private-feeling and swanky-looking condo (奢华的工作间), pointing at a room where he casually mentioned he would chat with Joshua Bell when he came by.My jaw was on the floor the entire time.At the end, the man picked up a Stradivarius and asked me to pizz a string while he held it.And he said, “Now you've played a Stradivarius.”I don't remember the man's name, but I'm so glad that he decided to show a noappointment, noncustomer around. He inspired me to continue pursuing my instrument after high school!4.Why did the author's father take her to the violin shop?A.To buy a new violin for the school orchestra.B.To show support for the author's hobby.C.To ask the receptionist for an appointment.D.To meet famous violinists.5.What does the underlined word “waive”in Paragraph 2 probably mean?A.Give up.B.Put off.C.Pay for. D.Prepare for.6.What can we infer about the man showing them around?A.He is highly educated.B.He is respectful but strict.C.He is friendly and considerate.D.He is good at making musical instruments.7.What's the author's purpose in writing the text?A.To share her experience of learning about some wonderful violins.B.To show her appreciation for a man in a rare violin shop.C.To encourage readers to stick to their dreams.D.To tell the importance of communication.CLifelike robots that can make decisions, adapt to their environment and learn, are one step closer thanks to a University of Bristol team who has shown a new way of fixing data processing into soft robotic materials. This new advance, published in Science Robotics, could create new robotic possibilities to environmental monitoring, pollution cleanup, drug delivery, wearable devices, and selfhealing structures. So far, the complexity and range of learned behaviors which can be created using only materialsbased control approaches have been limited. The concept of Soft Matter Computers (SMCs) is evolved from the workings of the vascular (血管的)system, where hormones such as adrenaline (肾上腺素) are released into the bloodstream and move in different directions throughout the body. When detected by a receptor, hormones then bring about responses in particular parts of the body such as increased blood flow in flight muscles and expansion of the pupils (瞳孔) in the eyes. Now, researchers from Bristol's Faculty of Engineering, led by Professor Jonathan Rossiter, have successfully shown a new mechanism that enabled computation to be fixed into three soft robots. In their paper, the team describes how a conductive fluid receptor (CFR) is a practicable and fundamental building block for a range of SMCs and next-generation robots. In the near future, SMCs could mirror this process by translating information within the structure of a fluidic tape that travels through the soft body of the robot, and then is detected by an appropriate receptor and then produces an output.Professor Rossiter said,“We have taken an important step toward entirely soft, autonomous robots and smart materials moving beyond stimulus-response (刺激反应的) strategies which could enable the intelligent behaviors seen in living creatures.Soft robots could become even more lifelike and they could be capable of independently adapting to their environment and can show the diversity of behaviours seen in the natural world.”8.What will happen with the invention of lifelike robots according to Paragraph 1?A.They will be able to heal themselves.B.They will bring benefits to many fields.C.They may negatively affect the employment.D.They may change people's way of fixing data.9.Where does the inspiration for SMCs come from?A.Biology.B.Computation.C.Building material. D.Behavioral psychology.10.Which of the following would Jonathan Rossiter most probably agree with?A.Soft robots depend on stimulusresponse strategies.B.Soft robots require simple computation systems.C.CFR will be widely used in the future robots.D.CFR is far from being practicable.11.What would be the best title for the text?A.The Effect of Lifelike Robots on Medical ScienceB.The Working Principle of Lifelike RobotsC.Lifelike Robots Soon to Be RealityD.Benefits of Lifelike RobotsDItalians are some of the fastest speakers on the planet, chattering at up to nine syllables (音节) per second. Many Germans are slow speakers, delivering five to six syllables in the same amount of time.Yet in any given minute, Italians and Germans transmit (传输) roughly the same amount of information, according to a new study.Scientists started with written texts from 17 languages, including English, Italian, Japanese, and Vietnamese. They calculated the information density of each language in bits. They found that Japanese, which has only 643 syllables, had an information density of about 5 bits per syllable, whereas English, with its 6,949 syllables, had a density of just over 7 bits per syllable.Vietnamese, with its complex system of six tones, topped the charts at 8 bits per syllable.Next, the researchers spent 3 years, recording 10 speakers from 14 of the 17 languages. Each participant read aloud 15 identical passages that had been translated into their mother tongue. After noting how long the speakers took to get through their readings, the researchers calculated an average speech rate per language, measured in syllables/second.Some languages were clearly faster than others. But when the researchers multiplied this rate by the bit rate to find out how much information was moved per second, they were shocked by the results. No matter how fast or slow, how simple or complex, each language gravitated toward an average rate of 39.15 bits per second. But why? Pellegrino and his colleagues suspect that the answer has everything to do with the limits imposed by our fragile biology — how much information our brains can take in or produce at any one time.De Boer, an evolutionary linguist who studies speech production at the Free University of Brussels, agrees that our brains are the bottleneck. That's because, he says, the average person can listen to audio recordings sped up to about 120%, and still has no problems with comprehension.“It really seems that the bottleneck is in putting the ideas together.”12.Which language ranks first in terms of information density according to Paragraph 2?A.Italian.B.Vietnamese.C.English. D.Japanese.13.What can we know from the study?A.Japanese speakers convey more information in a fixed time.B.The number of syllables of a language may be changeable.C.Germans tend to transmit more information than Italians.D.Human speech may have a universal information transmission rate.14.What leads to the result of the finding?A.People's fragile comprehension.B.Restriction of humans' brain.C.Information density.D.Complexity of the language.15.What is the structure of the whole text?A.①/②③/④⑤/⑥B.①②/③④/⑤⑥C.①②/③/④⑤/⑥D.①/②③④/⑤⑥Ⅱ.阅读七选五Being laughed at or joked about can happen during the process of learning a language. 16 The following are some ways to overcome the anxiety.17 Remind yourself that you are learning the language, so it is normal to make mistakes.Sometimes the best thing to do is just smile, take a deep breath and try not to let the fear of laughter stop you from learning the language.Practice your speaking skills. One of the best ways to practice your speaking skills is doing role plays. In a role play, two or more people act out an imaginary situation, for example, going to a market or talking to a bus driver. 18 You have a lot of questions about taking the bus. Then you can practice the questions on your friend. If you are unable to find a practice partner, you can practice in your head or you can talk out loud.Don't be afraid to ask questions. If you are worried about what to do in the moment when someone laughs at what you said, the solution can be simple. 19 —For example, “Is there adifferent way that I could have said it?” or “How would you usually say it?” Then, once you know the issue, you can bring the information to a trusted person and ask them to help you correct it.Keep a sense of humor.Keeping a sense of humor can make the long process of learning a language more fun.You might even laugh with the person who is laughing or making the joke.20A.Relax and be patient with yourself.B.Let's explore why some people laugh first.C.You can imagine your friend is the driver.D.Kindly ask the person the reason for the laughter.E.You'd better not set learning goals that are too strict.F.This may feel strange at first but get easier with time.G.And it may make some learners nervous about speaking their new language.外研版(2019)高中英语选择性必修第一册Unit 5 同步练习题答案版(限时:35分钟)Ⅰ.阅读理解AEducators Rising NYC ChapterTime of the event: October 2019-August 2020Contact: Angel WinstonEducators Rising NYC Chapter is a program for students in Grades 11 and 12 who have an interest in teaching.Chapters will participate in education-focused activities at your school and in monthly engagement opportunities hosted by NYC Men Teach. With the support of teachers or school-based staff members at your school, you can learn about careers in education.YVote Pizza and Politics ForumsTime of the event: OngoingContact: Sanda Balaban/917-543-8350Do you care about issues in and beyond your school and community?
