Significance of the ResearchKnown as British’s Maupassant, William Somerset Maugham was a versatile and prolific writer. He has published 25 plays, and over one hundred short stories, more than twenty novels, and some travel notes, reminiscences. Although he born in the Victorian age, he was unwilling to blindly follow the traditional literature of that age, and was filled with longing for the arrival of the new age, but he also can not bear to reverse the traditional literature of Victorian age. I think it is his ambivalence that makes him see human nature more objectively and inclusive. It also leads him to conclude that human nature is complex and unknowable. That’s why in many of his works, Maugham can vividly describes the complexity of human nature, and emphasizes the contradiction of beauty and ugliness, good and evil.As a famous novel written by Maugham, The Moon and Six Pence describes a middle-aged English stockbroker, Charles Strickland, who suddenly abandoned his happy and prosperous life, but went to Paris to pursue his dream of becoming a painter. The road to dream is not easy. On the contrary, it’s very difficult, he lived in a very rudimentary rental house, and he even can’t have a full meal. Moreover, in the last year of his life, he was blind because of leprosy, he still insisted on painting. The entanglement of poverty, tortures of disease, never can make him regret his decision. He eventually contributed the rest of his life to the gorgeous canvas. He believes deeply that painting is his mission. We will surely be impressed by such great determination of Strickland. However, we also will shocked at the terrible behaviors Strickland do to his kinsfolk and friends. He first abandoned his charming cultured wife and his two cunning children without any feeling of guilty. Moreover, even when Dirk Stroeve, the man who is full of compassion, rescued him from the verge of dying out and settled the ailing Strickland in his flat and nursed him to health, Strickland never feels grateful for his behavior, but seduced his wife Mrs Blanche Stroeve for his own selfish desires, totally ruined Dirk Stroeve’s good life. Later when Strickland has satisfied with his lust, he deserted Blanche again, and caused her finally committed suiside. From Strickland’s story, we can see clearly his characteristics are full ofcontradictions. That’s also why the experience of Strickland’s whole life has attracted the attention of many critics. Some of them hold the opinion that Strickland is a talented artist who transcends the secular fame and gain, and the embarrassment of mundane life. Meanwhile, there’s also some critics remark him as a callous scumbag who totally disregard social morals. They analyze the novel from such aspects as exploration of human nature, the complex characteristics of Strickland, spiritual salvation and so on. However, the studies from the perspective of the conflicts between ideality and reality are not thorough enough. Therefore, this thesis tries to explain the contradictions between these two opposites from the story of Strickland.2. Main Contents of the Research and Main Problems to Be SolvedThe intention of this study is to analyze the contradiction between ideality and reality in The Moon and Six Pence. This essay analyze the contradiction of ideality and reality from six parts. The first part is about the introduction of the background, main plot and narrative style of the novel. Then it comes to Chapter 1, it will mainly introduces the author, William Somerset Maugham, including the connection between his life experience and his works, and different critics’ comments on his works. After this is Chapter 2, it will analyze the personalities of the typical characters in the novel and make some comparisons of the characters whose personalities are totally opposite, thereby, can lead to the contradiction of ideality and reality . And then, the prototype of the novel Gauguin’s life experience will be introduced in Chapter 3 and it will make a contrast between Gauguin and Strickland. In Chapter 4, it will mainly talk about the contradictions between Ideality and Reality. The last part is the conclusion, I will talk about my opinion on this topic. Many researchers about this novel are done. Some critics have studied the reason why Strickland would abandon his life and so determined to purse his dream; some have studied the differences among the three female characters; some have studied the novel form the perspective of existentialism. However, very few of them have studied the novel form the contradictions of reality and ideality. Thus, this essay will analyze from problem of what is the contradictions between ideality and reality, and is there’s anyway we can solve these contradictions.3.
