Class Syllabus
Introduction:
Welcome to my AP English Class! I hope we will have fun with our time together while improving your written English. I hope everyone in this class can improve their English writing to the point that they can pass the AP English Language and Composition test with a 3 or higher. I also hope that taking this class will improve the depth of your vocabulary, the fluency of your oral English, your powers of critical reasoning, your ability to logically create arguments, anticipate counterarguments, and organize your thoughts in a way that is comparable to your peers in high school in the United States.
Writing Assignments:
Writing assignments will be a combination of take-home assignments and in-class work. Whenever we do practice essays for the AP test, we will be writing them in-class, in order to exactly control the amount of time you spend writing them. Other writing assignments like book reports will be take-home assignments. I will try as much as possible to give individual feedback on your writing, although it may sometimes be tough with longer papers and so many of you in the class.
Vocabulary Practice:
A major and ongoing goal of the class is to grow your English vocabulary. I know many of you are currently studying for the SAT by memorizing long lists of hard vocabulary words. I will try not to add too many additional words to your workload, but you will have to be learning some AP-level vocabulary as well. For the first few weeks, your vocabulary list will be made up of some linguistic terms that we use in AP analysis essays. After that, your vocabulary lists will be made up of AP level vocabulary words taken from databases online. I will be quizzing you on these words regularly and hope that you know their usage in addition to their meaning.
Reading:
We will be reading at least 2 short novels and a number of short stories in the class to improve your reading comprehension and familiarity with classic Western literature. For now, the first two novels are Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck and Animal Farm by George Orwell. You should pick up a copy of these books or print out a copy from online as soon as possible. I will provide information about the short stories we will read when we start that section. Most novel reading will be homework, whereas most short stories will be in-class.
Oral Practice:
While the focus of this class is writing, we will still engage in activities that improve your oral English. These may include class discussions, debates, and group presentations. Also, I hope to make active student participation a normal part of each class. I will reward students who frequently contribute to the discussions with points in The Game.
The Game:
After being divided into teams, you will be working together with this team for the rest of the class. Your team will accumulate points for both individual and team events. I can also take away points from your team if the situation seems appropriate for point deduction. At the end of the class, the team with the most points will win prizes from me. Any class assignment may contribute points to your team, and although I will usually announce ahead of time when there is an assignment that contributes points to The Game, sometimes there will be surprise events as well. I will keep track of the points earned by each team throughout the duration of this class.
Exams:
Except for a practice AP test, we don't have exams.
Cell Phones, Talking in Class, Not Doing Homework, etc..etc...
With regards to this kind of thing, I will treat you with respect and I hope that you will do the same to me. Just imagine if you were the teacher. You wouldn't want your students talking in class, coming into class and giving stupid excuses for why they haven't done their homework, or texting on their cell phones the whole time. Treat me with respect as your teacher and I'll treat you with respect as young adults. Use your cell phone in front of me and I'll take it away until the end of the day.。
