Recess and free play shouldn't be just sitting at computers.Teach students from an early age about internet safety, cyberbullying, balanced technology usage, and the importance of exercise and face-to-face social interaction.Avoid giving students too much homework that requires a computer or device to complete. I slept most of the way. When we finally landed in Beijing, it was already afternoon there because of the time difference. We took a taxi from the airport to our hotel.The hotel we stayed at was huge! It had to be at least 30 floors tall. Our room was on the 22nd floor and we had an awesome view looking out over the city. Beijing is a really crowded and busy place compared to my small town. There were skyscrapers and buildings everywhere you looked. And so many people and cars too! It was kind of overwhelming at first.After dropping our stuff off at the hotel, we immediately headed out to start exploring. The first place we went was Tiananmen Square. I had learned about it in school but it was crazy actually being there in person. The square itself is immense, easily big enough for hundreds of thousands of people. At the entrance there were these two huge decorative gateposts. They looked ancient!Next we walked through the gate into the Forbidden City. This was the emperor's palace back in dynastic times. It's a gigantic complex of temples, gardens, halls, and courtyards. Apparently there are 9,999 rooms total! We spent several hours just wandering around. Everything was built with such fine craftsmanship and intricate details. The architecture and artwork were breathtaking.The next day we visited the Great Wall. I couldn't wait because I'd wanted to see it for as long as I could remember. We drove quite a ways outside of Beijing to a less crowded section called Mutianyu. Even from a distance, the wall looked unbelievable, snaking across the mountainous landscape.It was such a tough climb up to the top! The steps were crazy steep and never seemed to end. But it was absolutely worth it. The view from up on the wall was spectacular, stretching out in both directions as far as you could see. We walked a few miles along the wall, taking in the beautiful scenery.One afternoon we toured the Summer Palace, which used to be the emperors' retreat away from the city. The palace grounds were filled with beautiful gardens, temples, bridges, and a massive lake. We took a boat out onto the lake which was really peaceful.
