My Grandpa Forgets Who I Am

A few days ago I visited my grandfather in hospital．He

has Alzhemier's—a degenerative disease that usually starts

slowly and gets worse over time．I thought I was prepared to

see him．I knew chances were slim that he'd actually

recognize me．

He didn't．As a matter of fact，he had no idea that he

even had grandchildren．But he was excited that somebody came to visit him．I tried to explain to

him who I was．But after he told me multiple times that he didn't have grandchildren, I gave up. And

my heart broke into a million little pieces．

I was tired of explaining things to him．So I just smiled．He smiled back．It's a genuine

smile．Like a long time ago，when he'd take me by the hand and made this big world a little bit less

scary for me．Now I have to take his hand．

We sat in silence for a little while before he told me to call my grandma．This was the first time

I had tried so hard to hold back tears．My grandma died four years ago and he didn't remember．He

thought she was stuck on her way to pick him up．

My grandpa used to be a strong，hard-working man．He was the person you turned to when you

needed your car fixed，your tires changed or something heavy to be carried．Sadly， that man left

this world a long time ago，and left behind a man that is lost and scared．

I want to help him．I want to make him feel better．I want to tell him about his old life， and

A new oral medication to treat patients in the early stages of multiple

sclerosis(多发性硬化) has shown considerable promise in two clinical trials,

researchers announced on Wednesday.

The medication is on track to become just the third oral drug available to M.S.

patients, and potentially the safest and most effective, experts said. The second

oral drug, called Aubagio, was approved just last week.

The new trials, published online in The New England Journal of Medicine, found

that the drug BG-12, developed by Biogen Idec, reduced relapsing M.S rates(旧病复发率)in patients by about 50 percent. The drug also obviously reduced the frequency

of new brain damage , and slowed the progression of disease compared with a placebo(安慰剂).

In the two clinical trials, called Define and Confirm, patients were divided into

一般来说，分词作状语要求与句子的主语保持逻辑上的一致。如果不一致，则用独立主格结构，或者是状语从句，相信这一点同学们都很清楚。但是也有一些作状语的分词与句子的逻辑主语不一致，也是正确的句子，这样的分词被称为垂悬但不致病分词。常见的情况有：与副词连用作评注性状语的分词；转变成介词的分词；转变成连词的分词。

一、作评注性状语的分词

现在分词speaking与一些副词连用，意思是“……说”，generally (broadly/ frankly/ strictly/ honestly/

personally) speaking 一般地（泛泛地/ 坦率地/ 严格地/ 诚实地/就个人来）说。如：

1. The limits of a person’s intelligence, generally speaking, are fixed at birth, but whether he reaches these

limits will depend on his environment.
