AGreeting Gesture —Bowing is the traditional form for both greeting and departing. Western and Korean male friends usually greet with both a slight bow and shaking hands. When shaking hands, both hands are sometimes used. Women usually do not shake hands, especially with men, but usually just nod lightly. The senior person offers to shake hands first, but the junior person bows first.Avoid hugging and kissing when greeting. Long direct eye contact is considered impolite. When saying goodbye, the traditional gesture is the bow.Touching GesturesGenerally speaking, the Koreans are not a touching society. So avoid touching or any long form of body contact. You seldom see public display of affection. On the other hand, you may note people of the same sex walking handinhand, which is simply a gesture of friendship. Don't worry about a bit of pushing in stores or when groups board public buses or trains. Apologies are neither offered nor expected.Beckoning GesturesThe open hand or the middle finger is used for pointing: To beckon (招手) someone, the palm (手掌) faces downward and the fingers are moved. Using the arm and hand up, with palm toward the face, is used only for calling dogs or children.Other GesturesRespect is always shown to elderly people, so it is common to stand up when a person, especially an elderly man enters the room. However, an elder may not give up a seat for a young boy. Men generally have priority (特权) in Korea: go through a door first, walk ahead of women, and women may help them with their coats.语篇解读:了解一个国家首先要了解这个国家的文化,本文主要向我们介绍了韩国的一些肢体语言。

典题精讲What will people die of 100 years from now? If you think that is a simple question, you have not been paying attention to the revolution that is taking place in bio-technology(生物技术). With the help of new medicine, the human body will last a very long time. Death will come mainly from accidents, murder and war. Today’s leading killers, such as heart disease, cancer, and aging itself, will become distant memories. In discussion of technological changes, the Internet gets most of the attention these days. But the change in medicine can be the real technological event of our times. How long can humans live? Human brains were known to decide the final death. Cells(细胞) are the basic units of all living things, and until recently, scientists were sure that the life of cells could not go much beyond 120 years because the basic materials of cells, such as those of brain cells, would not last forever. But the upper limits will be broken by new medicine. Sometime between 2050 and 2100, medicine will have advanced to the point at which every 10 years or so, people will be able to take medicine to repair their organs(器官). The medicine, made up of the basic building materials of life, will build new brain cells, heart cells, and so on—in much the same way our bodies make new skin cells to take the place of old ones.It is exciting to imagine that the advance in technology may be changing the most basic condition of human existence, but many technical problems still must be cleared up on the way to this wonderful future.1. According to the passage, human death is now mainly caused by ______________.A. diseases and agingB. accidents and warC. accidents and agingD. heart disease and war2. In the author’s opinion, today’s most important advance in technology lies in ______________.A. medicineB. the InternetC. brain cellsD. human organs3. Humans may live longer in the future because ______________.A. heart disease will be far away from usB. human brains can decide the final deathC. the basic materials of cells will last foreverD. human organs can be repaired by new medicine4. We can learn from the passage that ______________.A. human life will not last more than 120 years in the futureB. humans have to take medicine to build new skin cells nowC. much needs to be done before humans can have a longer lifeD. we have already solved the technical problems in building new cells1. 答案:A解析:这是一道细节题。

AAt the end of every year, Time picks the best 25 inventions that are “making the world better and smarter〞. Here we have picked three inventions that could be a part of your life in the near future. The levitating (悬浮的) light bulbThis special light bulb was invented by U.S. artist and scientist Simon Morris. He got the idea of making a light bulb float from hoverboards (悬浮滑板), which he used to dream of having as a kid.But the floating is not the most amazing part. The rejection force between the opposite ends of the magnets (磁铁), which were put in the bottom of the bulb and in the wooden base, does the job. What's new here is a technology called induction (电磁感应). It allows the light bulb to get power from the base even they are not in contact.Shoes that tie themselvesThey're not what you think — shoelaces that tie themselves in the way we tie them. Instead, the new shoes have small motors that control their laces. When you step in them, your feet will hit a sensor (传感器) in the shoes and the motor will automatically tighten the laces. But the shoes weren't just designed for lazy people's needs. They could actually give athletes an advantage during competition. They are also useful for people who cannot move their arms or fingers easily. The notouch thermometer (体温计)Taking your body temperature usually means putting a thermometer in your armpits (腋窝) and staying still for minutes. It may be easy for you, but it's an impossible task for little kids. Now, with the new thermometer, users can simply put it 2.5 centimeters from apatient's forehead and press the button, and it can get reading in two seconds.语篇解读:每到年终岁尾,《时代周刊》都会评选出25项“让世界变得更加美好和智能的〞最优发明。

Film or book, which do you prefer?
Some of us think that it is better to see the film than to read the book in the
original. The reason is that it takes less time to understand the whole story.
Besides, the film is usually more interesting, and it is easier to follow.
Some others have just the opposite opinion. They think that they can get
more detailed information from the original. Meanwhile, the language in the
book is possibly more lively and beautiful.
Personally, I agree with the second view. Actually I have more reasons for
it. I think I can stay at home, reading quietly in a situation of my own, and
what’s more, I am able to better understand the author’s ideas. In a word, to read
the original work is better than to see the film based on it.
