I think the most terrible thing in life for my little brother is getting up in the morning. He is almost sick when my mother calls, "Herbert! It's seven o'clock! Get up!"Herbert answers, "I'm coming!" and goes right back to sleep. I'm not at all like my brother. I don't like to go to bed at night but I don't mind getting up in the morning. I usually wake up before my mother calls me. I jump out of bed and go into the bathroom to take a shower. I get dressed, brush my teeth, comb my hair, and get ready to go downstairs for breakfast as soon as my mother calls. But not Herbert. He just sleeps. A military band (军乐队) in our bedroom could not wake him up. I call him and say, "Get up! Mum will be up here to pull you out of bed if you don't get up immediately!"But he just sleeps. After calling a few more times my mother has to come upstairs and pull Herbert out of bed. It's that way every day with my little brother.
如Adela 、Manchester 、NATO 。

AArtificial intelligence(AI,人工智能)can help us make phone calls. It can guide us to where we wantto go. It can play games. And now,AI can do even more things.Researchers from Microsoft have created the first machine translation system that can translate news articles from Chinese to English. The researchers tested the system by asking it to translate hundreds of sentences taken from newsstories. Then, language experts compared the results to the translation that were done by humans. Theexperts said that the system's translations were as good as the human translations.Experts used several methods to improve the system's translation abilities. “Much of our researchis really learned from how we humans do things,” lead researcher Liu Tieyan said. One method is called dual learning(对偶学习). In this method, the system translates every sentencefrom Chinese to English,as well as translates the sentences back from English into Chinese. This way,the system can improve itself and learn from its own mistakes. This is similar to what humans do to makesure their translations are exact.Another method makes use of deliberation networks(推敲网络).The researchers taught the system torepeat the process of translating the same sentence over and over. Gradually, the system can improve the quality of its translations. This is similar to how people correct their own writing by going throughit again and again.( )1. It is a planet that could support life. This planet is just 4.2 light years away from us. It is so close that space scientists have considered it as a next door neighbor. They say it could be reached by an unmanned spaceship before the end of thecentury—in time for people alive today to see it.An international team of scientists found the planet moving around the star called “Proxima Centauri”. The result came out last month from the scientific magazine Nature.Scientists have long thought that a planet with water is important for life. And it has to be neither too hot nor too cold. The newly-discovered planet is a little larger than earth. Scientists have namedit Proxima B. It moves around its sun,Proximal Central once every 11 days.American scientists have been using instruments for years to look for earth-like planets. In 2013,scientists' best guess was that there are about one billion(1,000 million) “earths” in space.Alan Boss is the chairman of a group for outer space research. He said that Proxima B not onlyconfirms(确认) the discovery of a planet, but also increases the number of other possible “earths” greatly.Boss said it is possible, even likely, that most stars have at least one earth-like planet, which he considers surprising. So from the early number of a billion, this new research suggests there may be as many possibleearth-like planets as there are stars in the Galaxy(银河系). That is,anywhere from 250 billion to 500 billion“earths”.This makes the possibility of living things increasingly likely. Boss said he believes human beingswill be able to show that there is life in places besides earth in his lifetime. “I am 65,” he said,“ but I expect to still be alive when it happens.”( )1. When will it be possible for an unmanned spaceship to reach Proximal B?A. In about eighty years.B. In about 4.2 years.C. In about eleven day.D. In about one billion years.( )2. In the fourth paragraph, the writer thinks that ________ is necessary for life.A. waterB. lightC. airD. wind( )3. What does t he underlined word “This” stand for in the last paragraph?A. Scientists have discovered an earth-like planet last month.B. There are far more earth-like planets than people thought.C. Proximal B is not far from earth and is just like our neighbor.D. The Galaxy will be the only place for living things to live in.( )4. What does Alan Boss mean by saying “but I expect to still be alive when it happens”?A. His health is in good state and he's sure he will live a long life.B. Science is developing much faster than ever in recent years.C. Scientists may soon find fact that there's life on other planets.D. America is far ahead of other countries in space research.GBeauty sleep is a real thing, researches have shown that people who have enough sleep look more attractive (有魅力的) to others.A few bad nights is enough to make a person look "especially" more ugly, their sleep experimentsshow. The researchers asked 25 university students to join in their sleep experiment. They were asked toget a good night's sleep for two nights.A week later, they were asked to sleep for only four hours every night for two nights in a row.The researchers took make-up free (素颜) photos of the volunteers after both the good and the badsleep.Next, they asked 122 strangers to have a look at the photos and judge (评价) them on attractiveness, health, and sleepiness, as well as asking them: "How much would you like to make friends with this person in the picture?"The strangers were good at judging if the person they were looking at was tired, and, if they weresleepy, their attractiveness score was low.The strangers also said they wouldn't want to socialize with the tired students. The researchers say this is natural for people. An unhealthy-looking face makes people run away. In other words, people don't want to hang around with people who might be ill.Dr. Brewer, an expert at the University of Liverpool said "Judgement of attractiveness is oftenunconscious (无意识的), hut we all do it, and we are able to judge on even something small like whethersomeone looks tired or unhealthy. This study is a good reminder of how important sleep is to us."( )1. When did the researchers take make-up free photos?A. After two nights good sleep.B. After two nights bad sleep.C. Influenced by the launch of the first manned mission to Mars next month, you will most likely get a gift card for a space trip. The interest in trips,100km above the surface of the Earth, has grown steadily since such a trip began. However, the market has grown much larger this year since the official announcement of the Mars mission. More low-cost space-lines have entered the market and you can now find flights for such a trip for aslow as $3,495. It's very reasonable.Space tourism(旅游业;观光业)is one of the markets that have developed fast during the last decade, with the opening of the Star bright Hotel on the moon a s well as the low orbital hotels that started accepting guests. However, accommodation in space is still expensive for the average household,so the suborbital(亚轨道的) flights with thirty-minute weightlessness during the three-hour flight will for some time be the most popular trip. However, the space-lines might in the future face fierce competition between space elevators(太空升降舱),like the one that is projected to start construction within two years. Once i t is fully functional,it will start to ship cargo to space. But it will accept passengers as soon as possible to get back thelarge investment. Even if the elevator becomes successful,it will take several years before there aremore elevators in the world to get in the competition for space traffic with the space-lines.Those who are looking for a little bit of adventure and have extra money to spend may want to consider a suborbital flight in space. While a suborbital flight may not be the space mission that you have always dreamed of,it will give you the rare opportunity to see what our planet looks like in a high-altitudeflight outside our atmosphere. So before you enjoy a trip by elevator to space, enjoy a suborbital flight first.( )1. From Paragraph 1,what will happen in January,2031?A. A gift card will be taken to Mars.B. The objects appear closer to you than they exactly are. You might find yourself reachingout of to touch something and completely missing it.Objects under water will appear larger than they would on the surface, too. Be careful not to tellany stories about the big fish that got away. That fish might not be so big after all! It's just becausesometimes things can seem to be as much as about 33 percent bigger in water! What's more,in deeper water, colors just don't seem as bright. In fact,it looks as if some colorsare missing. Remember the color of an object results from the wavelengths(波长) of light that are reflected (反射) from its surface. And light is taken in as it moves down through the water.Swimmers wear wet suits to keep warm underwater. Let's take a bright red, yellow, and blue wet suit as an example. These colors are hard to miss on the surface of water. Watch carefully the changes in color as you descend in the water. The red part now looks almost black because the red light wavelengths, the longest among these three colors, are missing. As you go down deeper, the same thing will happen tothe yellow part and in the end to the blue part. Even at a place of about 6 to 9 meters underwater, you will look terrible, like a ghost(鬼怪)! And you have to wait for your return to the surface to enjoythe bright colors again.( )1. You miss the object under water when you want to touch it because ________.A. your eyesight is quite poorB. you are not quick enoughC. it is not as close as it seemsD. it disappears very quickly( )2. A four-meter-long fish looks three meters long underwater.B. The wavelengths of red light are longer than those of blue light.C. Much water will be taken in by the swimmer deep in the wave.D. You will see a ghost if you go as deep as 6 to 9 meters into the sea.( )5. The best title of this passage is ________.A. The Standard of Color UnderwaterB. The Direction of Light UnderwaterC. The Brightness of Color UnderwaterD. The Behavior of Light UnderwaterLArtificial intelligence(人工智能),or AI in short,is the science of giving computers and machinesability to think and work like humans. AI scientists and engineers have made a lot of cool technologies.AI is rapidly catching up with the human ability to read faces. As a result, facial recognition(识别) is used a lot in the world. Chinese police use this technology to identify criminals(罪犯). Once they caught a criminal when he attended a concert. It also checks the ID of ride-hailing(网约车) drivers and lets people pay for things with a smile.AI is also used in self-driving cars, which are believed to be the future of driving. Most driversmay wave or nod at passers-by to let them cross the street, but self-driving cars don't have this abi lity. Carmakers are testing a light signal system to help them “speak” to humans. The system can show whatself-driving cars will do. For example,if a driverless car is yielding(让路),it will flash two whitelights side to side. A rapidly flashing light tell s passers-by that the car is about to speed up.Service Robots also show you how powerful AI is. Imagine this—you come back from school and your robot housekeeper is waiting for you at the door. After dinner,he teaches you to play the piano, just like a real music teacher. Such thoughts will soon happen in the real world. In the future, more and more service robots will become good home helpers.AI is so powerful that it can help human beings and even replace us in many jobs.( )1. What does the underlined word “identify” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?A. To let somebody know his mistakes.B. To come to realize and tell who is who.C. To take somebody to the police station.D. You can go to museums and markets, and meet people with different ideas and a different language. And, of course, you can eat different food, too.Sometimes the food in another country is different because it has a different taste—for example, food in India is often very spicy(辛辣的). But sometimes it is because the food itself is very different. So, what things do people eat in other countries that perhaps you don't eat in yours?Well, in Mexico, some people really like to eat grasshoppers. Do you think that's strange? Perhaps, but of course the people who eat grasshoppers don't think so, and in fact, grasshoppers are good for you.If you go to south Africa, you see that some places serve kudu—it's a kind of big antelope(羚羊). And in some parts of the USA, you can eat rattlesnakes—some people say it tastes like chicken, but other people say it's like fish. A lot of people just say, “It's delicious!”So perhaps you are thinking, “Oh, no, please. I just want to eat chips!” Oh, yes, chips. Now they are the same in every country, right? Wrong! Now satellites are helping to forecast(预报)the weather. They are in space, and they can reach any part of the world. The satellites take pictures of the atmosphere(大气), because this is where the weather forms(形成). They send these pictures to the weather stations. So meteorologists(气象学家)can see the weather of any part of the world. From the pictures, the scientists can often say how the weather will change.Today, nearly five hundred weather stations in sixty countries receive satellite pictures. When they receive new pictures, the meteorologists compare(比较)them with earlier ones. Perhaps they may find that the clouds have changed during the last few hours. This may mean that the weather on the ground may soon change, too. In their next weather forecast, the meteorologists can say this.So the weather satellites are a great help to the meteorologists. Before satellites were invented, the scientists could forecast the weather for about 24 or 48 hours. Now they can make good forecasts for three or five days. Suddenly I thought of the perfect addition."Wait just a minute," I told my sister. "I'll be right back."I sneaked into my mom's room and went to her jewelry box. Inside was a diamond brooch. I quickly rushed back to the bonus room.We began to change outfits as if we were on a fashion runway. We pretended to take pictures of each other for the newspaper. At one point, my sister stopped suddenly and asked, "Ashley, where's Mom's pin?""What?" I replied.I looked down and saw that the pin was gone. It must have fallen while I was changing."Oh no. I'm in deep trouble now!" I cried.Just then, Mom came in and greeted us, "Hi, girls. I want to take a little break. What are you doing?""Uh, nothing much. Just, playing.""Well, those are pretty outfits. Can I play too? I know just the thing."Before we could say anything, Mom was in her room putting on a lovely gown. Within minutes she came back and paraded (行进) around. She brushed up against me with her swirling skirts, and I nearly forgot about the pin. That was until she looked down and said, "Hmmm, I bet this would complete my outfit." She reached down and picked up the brooch. She looked at us with a curious expression."So, where did you get this?" Mom asked."I don't know where it came from," but I decided I'd better admit that I had taken the pin. "I took it out of your jewelry box. I just wanted to play with it." I held my breath waiting for her response."Well, dear, I understand that. Please put it away. Next time you want to borrow something from me, please come ask." Mom gave us both a hug and then got back to work.I stood there amazed for a minute. I was sure I would get in trouble. I'm sure it would have been worse if I had lied about it. Soon, perhaps, they may be able to forecast the weather for a week or more ahead(提前).1. Satellites travel _____________.A. in spaceB. in the atmosphereC. above the groundD. above space2.
