It was socool seeing them make their chrysalises and emerge as beautiful butterflies. She'd never make us just sit at our desks doing worksheets all day. That would be way too boring!Instead of boring lectures, she'd have us act things out, sing songs, or even put on little skits and plays about what we were learning. I'll never forget when we learned about the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. We split up into teams and each team had to put on a short play depicting the events of the fire from the perspective of different people like families, firefighters, milkmen, etc. It really helped me understand and remember all the details so much better than just reading a textbook. My team won best performance for our acting skills! I got to play the role of a Chicago firefighter trying his best to put out the flames. I even got a prize for my performance - a brand new notebook and pencils which was pretty exciting for a 3rd grader.Mrs. Johnson also really encourages students to pursue their individual interests and talents. Like if you were really into art, she'd give you opportunities to create art projects and posters to go with lessons. If you loved music, she'd have you write and perform songs about what you learned. My personal talent is creative writing and she was always encouraging me to write stories and enter them into the school's writing contests which Iwon a couple times! I even wrote and performed a short play for the class about Johnny Appleseed which was a lot of fun.She also encourages us to embrace our differences and cultures. Kids in the class were from all sorts of different backgrounds - African, Indian, Mexican, Korean, and more.
