Several times I got stuck behind a slow-moving tuck on a narrow road with a solid white line on my left, and I became increasingly impatient. At one point along an open road, I came to a crossing with a traffic light. I was alone on the road by now, but as I drove near the light, it turned red and I made a stop. I looked left, right and behind me. Nothing. Not a car, no suggestion of car lamps, but there I sat, waiting for the light to change, the only human being for at least a mile in any direction.I started wondering why 1 refused to run the light I was not afraid of being caught, because there was clearly no policeman around, and there certainly would have been no danger in going through it.Much later that night, the question of why I'd stopped for that light came back to me. I think I stopped because it's part of a contract(契约)we all have with each other. It's not only the law, but it is an agreement we have, and we trust each other to honor it: we don't go through red lights.Trust is our first inclination(倾向).Doubting others does not seem to be natural to us. The whole construction of our society depends on mutual(相互)trust, not distrust .We do what we say we'll do; we show up when we say we'll show up; and we pay when we say we'll pay. We trust each other in these matters, and we're angry or disappointed with the person or organization that breaks the trust we have in them.I was so proud of myself for stopping for the red light that night.56. Why did the author get impatient while driving?A. He was lonely on the road.B. He was slowed down by a truck.C. He got tired of driving too long.D. He came across too many traffic lights.57. What was the author's immediate action when the traffic light turned red?A. Stopping still.B. Driving through it.C. Looking around for other cars.D. Checking out for traffic police.58. The event made the author strongly believe thatA. traffic rules may be unnecessaryB. doubting others is human natureC. patience is important to driversD. a society needs mutual trust59. Why was the author proud of himself?A. He kept his promise.B. He held back his anger.C. He followed his inclination.D. He made a right decision.BWhy is pink or purple a color for girls and blue or brown for boys? The answer depends largely on cultural values as well as personal experiences. To the Egyptians, green was a color that represented the hope and joy of spring, while for Muslims, it means heaven. Red is a symbol of good luck in many cultures. In China, children are given money in a red envelope to bring good fortune in the New Year. For many nations, blue is a symbol of protection and religious beliefs. Greek people often wear a blue necklace hoping to protect themselves against evils(灾祸).People’s choice of colors is also influenced by their bodies’ reactions (反应)toward them. Green is said to be the most restful color. It has the ability to reduce pain and relax people both mentally and physically. People who work in green environment have been found to have fewer stomach aches.Red can cause a person’s blood pressure to rise and increase people’s appetites(食欲). Many decorators will include different shades of red in the restaurant. Similarly, many commercial websites will have a red “Buy Now” button because red is a color that easily catches a person’s eye.Blue is another calming color. Unlike red, blue can cause people to lose appetite. So if you want to eat less, some suggest that eating from blue plates can help. The next time you are deciding on what to wear or what color to decorate your room, think about the color carefully.60. Muslims regard green as a symbol of heaven mainly because of their .A. cultural valuesB. commercial purposesC. personal experiencesD. physical reactions to the color61. Which of the following would be the most proper title for the text?A. Colors and Human BeingsB. The Cultural Meaning of ColorC. Colors and Personal ExperiencesD. The Meaning and Function of ColorCIf Confucius(孔子)were still alive today and could celebrate his September 28 birthday with a big cake, there would be a lot of candles. He’d need a fan or a strong wind to help him put them out. While many people in China will remember Confucius on his special day, few people in the United State s will give him a passing thought. It’s nothing personal. Most Americans don’t even remember the birthdays of their own national heroes. But this doesn’t mean that Americans don’t care about Confucius. In many ways he has become a bridge that foreigners must cross if they want to reach a deeper understanding of China. In the past two decades, the Chinese studies programs have gained huge popularity in Western universities. More recently, the Chinese government has set up Confucius Institutes in more than 80 countries. These schools teach both Chinese language and culture. The main courses of Chinese culture usually include Chinese art, history and philosophy(哲学). Some social scientists suggest that Westerners should take advantages of the ancient Chinese wisdom to make up for the drawbacks(缺点) of Westerners philosophy. Students in the United States, at the same time, are racing to learn Chinese. So they will be ready for life in a world where China is an equal power with the United States. Businessmen who hope to make money in China are reading books about Confucius to understand their Chinese customers. So the old thinker’s ideas are still alive and well.Today China attracts the West more than ever, and it will need more teachers to introduce Confucius and Chinese culture to the West.As for the old thinker, he will not soon be forgotten by people in the West, even if his birthday is.64. The opening paragraph is mainly intended to ________A. provide some key facts about ConfuciusB. attract the readers’ interest in the subjectC. show great respect for the ancient thinkerD. prove the popularity of modern birthday celebrations65. We can learn from Paragraph 4 that American students______A.have a great interest in studying ChineseB. take an active part in Chinese competitionsC. try to get high scores in Chinese examsD. fight for a chance to learn Chinese66. What is the best title for the passage?A. Forgotten Wisdom in AmericaB. Huge Fans of the Chinese LanguageC. Chinese Culture for WesternersD. Old Thinker with a Big Future67. The passage is likely to appear in ___________.A. a biography(传记)B. a history paperC. a newspaperD. a philosophy textbookDIt h as always been said that women are not good drivers, because they simply don’t have very good driving ability. On the other hand, most car accidents happen to men; very few happen to women. From this, we can see that women are much more careful while driving. Another very interesting fact that we should point out is that in the past, women preferred to let their husbands be the only driver in the family rather than have a driving license. Somehow they were prevented from making this step in their lives, but nowadays there are many women that want to pass their driving tests from an early age. However, we have to admit that men are more skillful drivers than women, but this does not mean that a woman cannot become a good driver by accumulating(积累) experience. So more and more teenagers and women around the age of thirty now want to pass their driving tests. While taking their driving lessons, they also have a number of special lessons with their parents or somebody in the family that has a driving license, this is just to improve their driving abilities and help them to pass the tests more easily. To conclude, we can say that women are not such bad drivers. They just need more experience than men in order to be able to drive well. And on the other hand, there are a number of women that show better driving skills than the men around them.68. Compared with the past, nowadays many women ______.A. prefer to have a driving licenseB. have more accidents while drivingC. are somehow prevented from drivingD. are the only driver in the family69. What can we infer from the passage?A. Teenage girls cannot take driving tests.B. Men didn’t allow women to drive in the past.C. With enough experience, women can become good drivers.D. Women can easily pass their tests by taking driving lessons.70. The passage mainly talks about ______.A. women and their driving abilityB. men and their driving abilityC. why men are better drivers than womenD. why more women like to have a driving license四任务型读写(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)Some people succeed, while others may not. This is because some people possess certain qualities, which others do not.The first thing you must remember is that in order to succeed, you must be optimistic(乐观的).If you do not expect to win,you will not try as hard as those who do expect to win.You also need to have a clear aim and a reason for doing something because motivation(动力)is a key to achieving success. If you do not have an aim, then you will not be motivated to work hard and put your performance under the microscope to make sure that every detail is right.Another quality that helps people succeed is creativity(有创造力)-thinking about things in a different way and wondering how others would do the same thing.Think about some successful people you know. They might be successful with a little creativity, but the most successful people are the most creative ones.Reading is another to success,as it will help you learn about how other people have achieved success. If you want to learn how to set up a successful business, you should read books about people like Bill Gates and Jerry Yang, who have achieved amazing success in their areas of business.Practising is also important if you want to succeed because practice makes perfect.Practise every day at whatever career you are in,and by doing so,you will see yourself, your business and your self confidence begin to grow.If you feel confident about what you do,this confidence will make other people believe in you as well.Your colleagues will be happy to work with you,and your boss will give you more responsibility. Finally if you are a successful person, you will be able to look people in the eye and smile confidently.Success is yours for the taking!Cheers!Title(71)_________Certain qualities Supporting detailsOptimism ●Try hard(72)___________people who do expect to win.●Have a clear aim and a reason for doing something because a key(73)___________success is motivation.Creativity ●(74)_____________about things in a different way.●Study how other people would do the(75)_____________thing.(76)___________ ●Help you know about how(77)_____________have achieved Succuss.●Read books about(78)___________people such as Bill Gates and Jerry Yang to encourage yourselves.Practising ●(79)____________the saying“practice makes perfect.”●Believe in yourself and do what you want to do(80)________________。

When my friend Maxie says “Have a nice day” with a smile, I know she sincerely cares about what happens to me. I felt loved and secure since another person cares about me and wishes me well.“Have a nice day. Next!” This version of the expression is spoken by a salesgirl at the supermarket who is rushing me and my groceries out the door. The words come out in the same tone (腔调) with a fixed procedure. They are spoken at me, not to me. Obviously, the concern for my day and everyone else’s is the management’s attempt to increase business. The expression is one of those behaviors that help people get along with each other. Sometimes it indicates the end of a meeting. As soon as you hear it, you know the meeting is at an end. Sometimes the expression saves us when we don’t know what to say. “Oh, you just had a tooth out? I’m terribly sorry, but have a nice day.”The expression can be pleasant. If a strangers says “Have a nice day” to you, you may find it heart-warming because someone you don’t know has tried to be nice to you.Although the use of the expression is an insincere, meaningless social custom at times, there is nothing wrong with the sentence except that it is a little uninteresting. The salesgirl, the waitress, the teacher, and all the countless others who speak it without thinking may not really care about my day. But in a strange and comfortable way, it’s nice to know they care enough to pretend they care when they really don’t all that much. While the expression may not often be sincere, it is always spoken. The point is that people say it all the time when they like.31. How does the author understand Maxie’s words?A. Maxie shows her anxiety to the author.B. Maxie really wishes the author a good day.C. Maxie encourages the author to stay happy.D. Maxie really worries about the author’s security.32. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 mean?A. The salesgirl is rude.B. The salesgirl is bored.C. The salesgirl cares about me.D. The salesgirl says the words as a routine.33. By saying “Have a nice day,” a stranger may ____.A. try to be polite to youB. express respect to youC. give his blessing to youD. share his pleasure with you34. According to the last paragraph, people say “Have a nice day”_______.A. sincerelyB. as thanksC. as a habitD. encouragingly35. What is the best title of the passage?A. Have a Nice Day—a Social CustomB. Have a Nice Day—a Pleasant GestureC. Have a Nice Day—a Heart-warming GreetingD. Have a Nice Day—a Polite Ending of a ConversationBI have been consistently opposed to feeding a baby regularly. As a doctor, mother and scientist in child development I believe there is nothing to recommend it, from the baby’s point of view.Mothers, doctors and nurse alike have no idea of where a baby’s blood sugar level lies. All we know is that a low level is harmful to brain development and makes a baby easily annoyed. In this state, the baby is difficult to calm down and sleep is impossible. The baby asks for attention by crying and searching for food with its mouth. It is not just unkind but also dangerous to say a four-hourly feeding schedule will make a baby satisfied. The first of the experts to advocate a strict clock-watching schedule was Dr Frederic Truby King who was against feeding in the night. I’ve never heard anything so ridiculous. Baby feeding shouldn’t follow a timetable set by the mum. What is important is feeding a baby in the best way, though it may cause some inconvenience in the first few weeks.Well, at last we have copper-bottomed research that supports demand feeding and points out the weaknesses of strictly timed feeding. The research finds out that babies who are fed on demand do better at school at age 5, 7, 11 and 14, than babies fed according to the clock. By the age of 8, their IQ (智商) scores are four to five percent higher than babies fed by a rigid timetable. This Research comes from Oxford and Essex University using a sample (样本) of 10,419 children born in the early 1990s, taking account of parental education, family income, a child’s sex and age, the mother’s health and feeding style. These results don’t surprise me. Feeding according to schedule runs the risk of harming the rapidly growing brain by taking no account of sinking blood sugar levels.I hope this research will put an end to advocating strictly timed baby feeling practices.36. According to Paragraph 2, one reason why a baby cries is that it feels ____.A. sickB. upsetC. sleepyD. hungry37. What does the author think about Dr King?A. He is strictB. He is unkindC. He has the wrong idea.D. He sets a timetable for mothers38. The word copper-bottomed in Paragraph 4 is closest in meaning to ____.A. basicB. reliableC. surprisingD. interesting39. What does the research tell us about feeding a baby on demand?A. The baby will sleep well.B. The baby will have its brain harmed.C. The baby will have a low blood sugar level.D. The baby will grow to be wiser by the age of 8.40. While most people were warming up their cars, Trevor, my husband, had to get up early to ride his bike four kilometers away from home to work. On arrival, he parked his bike outside the back door as he usually does. After putting in 10 hours of labor, he returned to find his bike gone. The bike, a black Kona 18 speed, was our only transport. Trevor used it to get to work, putting in 60-hour weeks to support his young family. And the bike was also used to get groceries(食品杂货),saving us from having to walk long distances from where we live.I was so sad that someone would steal our bike that I wrote to the newspaper and told them our story. Shortly after that, several people in our area offered to help. One wonderful stranger even bought a bike, then called my husband to pick it up. Once again my husband had a way to get to and from his job. It really is an honor that a complete stranger would go out of their way for someone they have never met before. People say that a smile can be passed from one person to another, but acts of kindness from strangers are even more so. This experience has had a spreading effect in our lives because it strengthened our faith in humanity(人性) as a whole. And it has influenced us to be more mindful of ways we, too, can share with others. No matter how big or how small, an act of kindness shows that someone cares. And the results can be everlasting.56. We can conclude that _______A. the couple worked 60 hours a week.B. people were busy before ChristmasC. the stranger brought over the bikeD. life was hard for the young family.CThe literal meaning of philosophy is “love of wisdom”. But this meaning does not tell us very much. Unlike the other disciplines, philosophy cannot be defined by what you study, because it is actually unlimited. Anything can be the subject matter of philosophy: are, history, law, language, literature, mathematics, and in fact, the other academic disciplines are directly related to philosophy. For this reason you get a Doctorate(博士学位)of Philosophy (Ph. D. ) in biochemistry, or computer science, or psychologyTwo broad sub-fields of philosophy are logic and the history of philosophy. Logic is the science of argument and critical thinking. It provides sound methods for distinguishing good from bad reasoning. The history of philosophy involves the study of major philosophers and periods in the development of philosophy.Of what use is philosophy? First it is useful in educational advancement. It is necessary for understanding other disciplines. Only philosophy questions the nature of the concepts used in a discipline, and its relation to other disciplines. And through the study of philosophy, one develops sound methods of research and analysis that can be applied to any field. There are a number of general uses of philosophy. It strengthens one’s ability to solve problems, to communicate, to organize ideas and issues, to persuade, and to take what is the most important from a large quantity of data. These general uses are of great benefit in the career field, not necessarily for obtaining one’s first job after graduation, but for preparing for positions of responsibility, management and leadership later on. It is very short-sighted after all, to take a course of studies only for the purpose of getting one’s first job. The useful skills developed through the study of philosophy have significant long-term benefits in career advancement. No other discipline systematically follows the ideals of wisdom, leadership, and capacity to resolve human conflict61. From the passage, we can conclude .A. not all the subjects have to do with philosophyB. philosophy can be helpful for the study of any other subjectsC. a person will get a Ph.D. if he/she studies philosophyD. philosophy is the only solution to all the problems in the worldDWugging, or web use giving, describes the act of giving to charity at no cost to the user. By using , which is being added to a number of university computers across the UK, students can raise money every time they search, but it won’t cost them a penny.Research shows that students are extremely passionate about supporting charity — 88% of full time students have used the Internet to give to charity. With rising personal debt levels in this age group, due to university tuition fees or personal loans and a lack of long-term savings, traditional methods of donating to charity are often not appealing (有感染力的) or possible.Beth Truman, a 21 year old recent university graduate, has used to donate to her chosen charity, the RSPCA, for two years and has seen the “wugging” movement grow in popularity with students. “When you’re at university you become more socially aware, but it’s sometimes hard to give to others w hen you have little money yourself,” says Beth. “Wugging is great for people inthis age group as it allows them to use the technology on a daily basis to give to charity, without costing them a single penny.”Wugging is perfect for people who want to be m ore socially aware and supportive but don’t feel they have the means to do so. Students using the web can raise money for causes they care about without costing them anything in terms of time or money, and charities get a valuable source of funding. works like any other search engine, allowing users to search for information, news and images but users can decide which of the UK’s 170,000 charities they would like to support through their clicks. then makes monthly payments to every registered charity. UNESCO first recognized the drawings in 1979 when about 140, 000 were discovered, however, since then many more have been uncovered. These drawings are spread all across the valley.
