ADo you have a favorite beach that you have visited? If you hesitate to answer, please look at the following:1.Siesta Key, United StatesSiesta Key is on the Gulf of Mexico. It offers safe and clean waters, a big beach, striking sunsets, and excellent seashell collecting. Visitors of all ages go to Siesta Key when the tide is low to find beautiful, large and, sometimes, rare seashells. Concha, SpainLa Concha beach is in the city of San Sebastian, in northern Spain’s Basque area.People come here to surf and swim in the Atlantic Ocean’s La Concha Bay. They also enjoy walking along the wide, curved beach. La Concha is more developed than other best-known beaches. From the sandy coast, you can see San Sebastian’s tall buildings and hear the sounds of city life. In fact, it is one of Europe’s best-known urban beaches.3.Galapagos Beach, EcuadorProbably no place on Earth is better known for wildlife than the Galapagos Islands. And the white-sand Galapagos Beach at Tortuga Bay does not disappoint in that respect. Hundreds of sea turtles build their nests here each year. Visitors may also see marine iguanas, sea lions, flamingos, and lava gulls—birds that are found only in the Galapagos.4.Elafonissi Beach, GreeceOn the Greek island of Grete, this best beach offers unspoiled natural beauty. Elafonissi Beach is known for its extremely blue-green-colored waters, pink sand and black rocks. It is also known for being somewhat difficult to reach. The road to Elafonissi is narrow and takes many sharp turns. But that does not seem to stop people; it is filled with visitors year-round.21.What can visitors enjoy at Siesta Key, United States?A. Excitement of the tide.B. Safe and colourful watersC. Collections of rare seashells.D. The beauty of the sinking sun.22.Why is La Concha, Spain the most developed beach pf the four?A. It receives the most visitorsB. It lies in a city.C. It needs to hold water sports.D. It requires restaurants for visitors.23.Which of the following is hard to arrive at?A. Siesta Key, United States.B. La Concha, Spain.C. Elafonissi Beach, Greece.D. Galapagos Beach, EcuadorBEvery day, a homeowner in Pennsylvania is reminded of a mistake he made 13 years ago. At around 8 in the evening, his otherwise peaceful house comes alive with the beeping of an alarm clock he accidentally dropped down a vent(通气孔)over a decade ago. It’s been stuck in the wall ever since.13 years ago, Jerry Lynn, of Ross Township, Pennsylvania, wanted to drill a hole through his living room wall, so he could pass the television cable through it. He didn’t want to destroy any pipes or wires in the wall, so he came up with a brilliant idea to ensure that he was drilling in an empty place. He grabbed his alarm clock, tied it to a string and programmed it to go off in 10 minutes. Then he lowered it into the wall through a vent, and waited for it to ring. His goalwas to drill near the place where the ringing was coming from, ensuring that there was nothing to pass through there. It all went according to plan, until the alarm clock fell into the wall.Try as he might, the man didn’t get back the alarm clock, but figured it would probably run out of battery in three or four months, so he wasn’t too worried about it. That was in September 2019, but 13 years later, the alarm clock still rings every day, at 10 minutes to 8 in the evening during daylight savings time, and ten minutes to seven, during standard time.As you can imagine, Jerry and his wife, Sylvia, have gotten used to the ringing living room wall, after 13 years, but it can still shock guests.“I would have probably torn down that wall after only 2 days, just to stop that boring thing, but after putting up with it for 13 years, that would be a shame. I’ve never heard of a clock battery lasting that long, even though they don’t use too much power, so it will be interesting to see how long it will keep ringing for.” Jerry said.24. Why did Jerry put a clock into the wall?A. To determine how long he would drill.B. To make his work easy and enjoyable.C. To warn him of the dangerous place.D. To find a safe place to make a hole.25. Why did Jerry treat the stuck clock too seriously?A. It would run out of power.B. It would soon break down.C. It was not worth too much.D. It could still work in the wall.26.It can be inferred from the last paragraph that _____.A. guests of Jerry’s will be frightenedB. the clock will be leave there as it isC. the clock will keep ringing for many yearsD. Jerry will tear down the wall to get the clock27. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?A. An Unexpected Accident Might Create a Guinness World RecordB. A Brilliant Idea Has Turned Out to Be a Pleasant ExperienceC. Alarm Clock in the Wall Has Been Ringing Daily for 13 YearsD. Battery in the Clock Lasts 13 Years UnexpectedlyCAmerica has been called a democracy since its independence more than 200 years ago. However, at that time, only men were permitted to vote. Only men could own land and practice most professions. Women could not get a higher education or hold public office. The woman’s place was considered to be the home. Working women were not common. They usually had poor jobs and little respect.Through the history of the country, many American women have worked to reduce the restrictions that society placed on them. They have met opposition. Slowly, however, the opportunities for women have increased. Colleges and universities were established for women. Later women were admitted to schools originally established only for men. In the early part of this century, American women were finally allowed to vote. During and since World War II American women have become a considerable part of the American work force.Today, many women in America hold important positions, or are pursuing careers that they could not pursue in the past. But many women are dissatisfied with the current situation. They point out that women are often paid less than men for the same work they do.The top positions in nearly all fields are still exactly held by men. In many ways, a woman’s life is still dominated by her father or her husband.Recently women worked to get a chance in the law to the U.S. Constitution ensuring their rights. The equal rights improvement, as it was called, was supported by most congressmen(国会议员)and most states. It did not get the support of two-thirds of the states which is necessary for a constitutional improvement. Nevertheless, the role and the rights of American women is an important concern in the U.S. today.28. What do you know about women in the early days of the U.S.?A. None of them attempted to work outside.B. They were already given the right to vote.C. They were expected to centre on their homes.D. They were given great care and respect.29. Why are many women unsatisfied in America today?A. They are looked down upon by men.B. Their contributions are not recognized.C. They can’t find jobs as easily as men can.D. They can’t earn pay for equal work.30. The underlined word “dominated” in Paragraph 4 can be replaced by _____ .A. affectedB. controlledC. changedD. supported31. Why did America women fail to pass the law for their rights?A. Most of the states didn’t agree to their opinions.B. The number of states supporting it was not enough.C. Men were strongly against it to protect their positions.D. People thought that women already have enough rights.Dwe communicate most commonly, of course, with our words. But we also speak with our bodies. We call it body language. Sometimes, though, we need to describe our body language with words. That is what today’s show isabout-talking about body language. Two types of body language have made their way into text messaging and social media language. The most common is LOL. If we are LOL-ing, we are laughing out loud. That is what l-o-l stands for. And it is easy to know when to use this. If a friend writes something to you that is extremely funny, you can reply with a “LOL.”Here’s another one you might see in a text message from a friend. When someone nods their head up and down, that means they are in agreement. And if they shake their heads back and forth, it means they are disagreeing. Well, sometimes it does. Sometimes shaking one’s head means something completely different. For example, I might say I could only shake my head at his arrogance(傲慢). This means that I couldn’t believe that he had said or done something so arrogant. In a text, email or social media post, you can simply type SMH. But just as with LOL, it doesn’t sound right in spoken English. Here is an example of how to use the full phrase “throw your hands up” in a conversation. If your friend is always behaving badly, you may just have to throw your hands up. This body language expression means that you realize that you cannot do anything to make a situation better. For example, let’s say you are teaching a roomful of young children when suddenly a dog runs through the classroom! The children jump up and laughing and chasing the dog. You can’t do anything to quiet them down. So, you just throw your hands up and let them have fun.Shrugging your shoulders is when you raise and lower them. As body language, it shows that you don’t care about something. But it can also mean that you are uncertain or perhaps just bored.32. When should you use a “LOL” while chatting online?A. You are blamed.B. You read a joke.C. You find out a lie.D. You are praised.33. What does the underlined word “does” in Paragraph 3 refer to?A. MeansB. Disagrees.C. Shakes.D. Nods 34. What do “SMH” and “LOL” have in common?A. They sound the same sound.B. They are wrong English words.C. They can’t be pronounced normally.D. They can’t be used in spoken language.35. If there’s something you can’t control, you have to ______.A. nod your headB. shake your headC. throw your hands upD. shrug your shoulders第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

The organization’s efforts help farmers, the environment, and people struggling to feed their families all at once.“In the United States, 40 million Americans don’t have enough food to eat. They don’t know where their next meal is going to come from,” said Aidan Reilly, who co-founded Farmlink. “Meanwhile, in the United States, we’re throwing out over 100 billion pounds of food every year.”Back in 2020, Reilly and his childhood friend James Kanoff were reading and watching news about food shortages, and they learned that area farms were forced to destroy excess produce that they couldn’t sell, especially with restaurants, schools and hotels closed. Reilly, Kanoff and a core group of friends worked together over Zoom, texted and e-mailed to contact farms coast to coast. “We didn’t really set out to start a nonprofit,” Reilly said. “We just thought, ‘There’re so many people suffering, if we can figure out one way to help, then that’ll be great.”In California, they found a farmer who had 13, 000 eggs that could be donated, and Reilly offered to do the pickup and delivery himself. That was the first of many moredeliveries. With “we’ll come to you” as their catchphrase (标语), the group rented U-Haul trucks and attempted to do all the food pickup and deliveries themselves.“We had a lot of small problems in the beginning,” Reilly said. “We broke axles (车轴), loaded in 40, 000 pounds of potatoes in a wrong way and had to try to drag them out by using another truck and a rope. But we made it work.”“Farmlink has worked with more than 100 farms and 300 communities in the US, rescuing and moving enough food to distribute more than 64 million meals,” Reilly said. 4.What can we learn about Farmlink Project from the text?A.It was launched by some college students.B.It helps relieve American poverty.C.It cooperated with the farms worldwide.D.It is supported by the government. 5.Why did some farms waste the produce left?A.The produce was of poor quality.B.Nobody came to purchase the produce.C.The farmers refused to sell it at a low price.D.Food shortages were no longer a problem globally.6.What difficulty did the students encounter in the start-up phase?A.They were lacking in experience.B.They overloaded the supply.C.Their navigation aids didn’t work.D.The vehicles were inadequate. 7.What is the text mainly about?A.Americans faced a food shortage crisis.B.Farmers in poor areas worried about food waste.C.Volunteers delivered farm produce to those in need.D.Students took action to tackle hunger and food waste.Tariq Qaiser, an architect, is trying to protect mangroves (红树林). The trees could save Pakistan’s largest city Karachi, sitting on the Arabian Sea, from natural disaster. He comes to Bundal Island several times a week to document the illegal cutting of mangrove trees. Very often, “You can’t hear a single bird because the chain saws are so loud. The trees are cut down illegally for firewood,” he says, shaking his head. Besides, developers clear the mangroves to make room for construction.Karachi has a hot climate, and its concrete buildings and paved roads make it even hotter. Offshore, there are islands where mangroves grow. They could be the key to slowing climatechange. Mangrove forests pull carbon dioxide out of the air, holding four times as much of the planet-warming gas as other forests can. They support diverse ecosystems. As sea levels rise with global warming, the trees could play a big role in protecting coastal cities like Karachi from flooding. Karachi’s mangroves are disappearing. But its numbers are rising in other parts of Pakistan. With replanting efforts, the country has tripled (三倍于) its mangrove coverage over the past 30 years.Qaiser’s work may have worked. Recently, a court in Karachi declared Bundal Island’s mangroves to be protected forests. But unforested parts of the island remain unprotected, and developers want to build there. City officials say this could provide much-needed housing and bring in billions of dollars. They claim that some of that money could be used to plant mangroves in other parts of Pakistan.Ecologist Rafiul Haq appreciates Qaiser’s “extraordinary work” educating the public about mangroves. But he wishes Qaiser would look at the bigger picture. “Only 7% of Pakistan’s mangroves are in Karachi,” Haq says. He thinks it’s wrong to focus on the losses in 7% of the country while ignoring the success in 93% of it. But Qaiser believes it’s important to protect every bit.8.What do we know about Karachi’s mangroves?A.They occupy the building land.B.They’re home to various birds.C.They’re primarily being used as firewood.D.They protect the city from climate catastrophe.9.Why are efforts made to conserve the mangrove trees?A.Their birthplaces meet crisis.B.They boast huge diversity.C.Their bonds with nature are close.D.They grow at a rapid speed. 10.What does the Karachi government plan to do?A.Grow mangroves in other areas.B.Destroy buildings to grow mangroves.C.Build more mangrove reserves.D.Use mangroves to make profit. 11.What does Haq think of Qaiser’s work on Karachi’s mangroves?A.Challenging.B.Effective.C.Insignificant.D.Partial.It’s well-known that humor can benefit us both physically and mentally. The idea that laughter is the best medicine has been around since ancient times. In his 1905 book, Jokes and Their Relation to the Unconscious, Sigmund Freud argued that humor is the highest of thepsyche’s defense mechanism (机制), capable of turning anxiety into pleasure. There are four humor styles. Affiliative humor refers to jokes about things that might be commonly considered funny, which is usually employed to improve relationships or make others laugh. If you’ve ever shared a funny picture with a coworker, you’ve used affiliative humor. Self-enhancing humor involves being able to laugh at yourself, often used as a way for you to deal with stress or difficulties and feel better as a result. Aggressive humor is laughing at the expense of others, which often involves sarcasm (讽刺), teasing, and criticism. Self-defeating humor is the art of putting yourself down to gain favor from your peers, which is possibly used by someone who’s targeted by bullies. Each style of humor actually carries a different influence, when it comes to mental health. Julie Aitken Schermer, a psychological researcher at The University of Western Ontario, says people using self-enhancing humor are less likely to show signs of loneliness and poor relationships with others. By contrast, both aggressive and self-defeating humor styles can hint at trouble. “We find that self-defeating humor is the most concerning style as it is also linked with loneliness and feelings of not mattering. Those with an aggressive humor style may not experience loneliness as much, however, since they rely on group dynamics (群体动力) in order to make fun of their peers,” says Schermer.Even if you tend to favor more negative humor styles, there’s no reason to lose heart. Schermer says people can develop a positive, self-enhancing humor style by concentrating on the lighter and more humorous aspects of life. As author Kurt V onnegut once wrote, “Laughter and tears are both responses to worries and anxieties. I prefer to laugh, since there is less cleaning up to do afterward.”12.Why is Sigmund Freud’s book mentioned in Paragraph 1?A.To show the importance of mental health.B.To stress the role of humor.C.To persuade people to stay positive.D.To introduce ancient jokes to us. 13.According to the text, which kind of humor may you use to relieve pressure?A.Affiliative humor.B.Self-enhancing humor.C.Aggressive humor.D.Self-defeating humor.14.What does the underlined phrase “hint at” probably mean in the third paragraph?A.Signal.B.Explain.C.Prevent.D.Solve. 15.Which of the following will Kurt V onnegut probably agree with?A.Humor is difficult to control.B.Crying is a good way of relief.C.Humor is a double-edged sword.D.Laughter is the best cure for stress.二、七选五Humanities departments(人文院系)in America are once again being cut down. Earlier this month, the State University of New York(SUNY)StonyBrook announced a plan to abandon several of the college’s well-known departments for lack of fund. The University ofdecided to gradually get rid of philosophy department. In June 2015, the Japanese minister of education sent a letter to the presidents of the national universities of Japan, suggesting they close their graduate and undergraduate departments in the humanities and social sciences and focus on something more practical. These are hard times. Instead of Shakespeare or French, there will be(perhaps there already are)college classes in how to cut corporate spending. 17 But the only opportunity has been lost if they are denied the opportunity to study foreign languages, the classics, literature, philosophy, music, theater and art in the university. When else in their busy lives will they get that chance?18 . Essays explain why we need these subjects, and what their loss will mean. These areas of learning provide us with the ability to think critically and independently; to see both sides of an issue;to look beneath the surface of what we are being told; to appreciate the ways in which language can help us understand one another more clearly.I don’t believe that the humanities can make you a decent person. 19 .
