A foreigner’s first impression of the U.S. is likely to be that everyone is in a rush-often under pressure. City people appear always to be hurrying to get where they are going restlessly, seeking attention in a store, and elbowing others as they try to complete their errands (任务). Racing through daytime meals is part of the pace of life in this country.Working time is considered precious. Others in public eating places are waiting for you to finish so that they too can be served and get back to work within the time allowed. Each person hurries to make room for the next person. If youdon’t, waiters will hurry you.You also find drivers will be abrupt and that people will push past you. Youwill miss smiles, brief conversations, and small courtesies with strangers. Don’t take it personally. This is because people value time highly, and they resent someone else “wasting” it beyond a certain courtesy point. The view of time affects the importance we attach to patience. In the American system of values, patience is not a high priority. Many of us have what might be called “a short fuse.” We begin to move restlessly about if we feel time is slipping away without some return------be this in terms of pleasure, work value,or rest. Those coming from lands where time is looked upon differently may find this matter of pace to be one of their most difficult adjustments in both business and daily life. Many newcomers to the States will miss the opening courtesy of a business call, for example, they will miss the ritual socializing that goes with a welcomingcup of tea or coffee they may be traditional in their own country. They may miss leisurely business chats in a café or coffeehouse. Normally, Americans do not assess their visitors in such relaxed surroundings over prolonged small talks. We seek out evidence of past performance rather than evaluate a business colleague through social courtesies. Since we generally assess and probe professionally rather than socially, we start talking business very quickly.1. The statement that Americans are impolite to their business colleagues is wrong.A: T B: F2. In the fourth paragraph, ‘a high priority’ means ‘a first concern’A: T B: F3. Americans evaluate a business colleague by establishing business relations. A: T B: F4. This passage mainly talks about how Americans do business with foreigners.A: T B: F5. We can infer from the passage that the author’s tone in writing is praisful.A: T B: F正确答案:1-A, 2-A, 3-B, 4-B, 5-A23. How men first learnt to invent words is unknown: in other words, the origin of language is a mystery. All we really know is that men, unlike animals, somehow invented certain sounds to express thought and feelings, actions and things, so that they could communicate with each other; and that later they agreed upon certain signs, called letters, which could be combined to present those sounds, and which could be written down. Those sounds, whether spoken or written in letters, we call words. The power of words, then, lies in their associations – the things they bring up before our minds. Words become filled with meaning for us by experience; and the longer we live, the more certain words recall to us the glad and sad events of our past; and the more we read and learn, the more the number of words that mean something increases.Great writers are those who not only have great thoughts but also express these thoughts in words which appeal powerfully to our minds and emotions. This charming and telling use of words is what we call literary style. Above all, the real poet is a master of words. He can convey his meaning in words which singlike music and which by their position and association can move men to tears. We should therefore learn to choose our words carefully and use them accurately, or they will make our speech silly and vulgar.1. The origin of language is ________________.A a legend handed down from the pastB a matter that is hidden or secretC a question difficult to answerD problem not yet solved2. What is true about words? __________________.A They are used to express feelings only.B They can not be written down.C They are simply sounds.D They are mysterious.3. The real power of words lies in their ______________.A propertiesB characteristicsC peculiarityD representative function4. By “association”, the author means ______________.A a special qualityB a joining of ideas in the mindC an appearance which is puzzlingD a strange feature5. One advantage of living outside London is that houses are cheaper. Even a small flat in London without a garden costs quite a lot to rent. With the same money, one can get a little house in the country with a garden of one’s own. Then, in the country one can really get away from the noise and hurry of busy working lives. Even though one has to get up earlier and spend more time in trains or buses, one can sleep better at night and during weekends and on summer evenings, one can enjoy the fresh, clean air of the country. If one likes gardens, one can spend one’s free time digging, planting, watering and doing the hundred and one other jobs which are needed in a garden. Then, when the flowers andvegetables come up, one has got the reward together with those who have shared the secret of Nature. Some people, however, take no interest in country things: for them, happiness lies in the town, with its cinemas and theatres, beautiful shops and busy streets, dance-halls and restaurants. Such people would feelthat their life was not worth living if they had to live it outside London. An occasional walk in one of the parks and a fortnight’s (two weeks) visit to the sea every summer is all the country they want: the rest they are quite prepared to leave to those who are glad to get away from London every night.• 1. Which of the following statements is NOT true?___________• A. People who love Nature prefer to live outside the city.B. People who work in London prefer to live in the country.C. Some people enjoying city life prefer to work and live insideLondon. D. Many nature lovers, though working in London, prefer to live outside the city.• 2. But the cultures of the two countries sometimes seem to be miles apart. Last Thursday Britain and France celebrated the 100th anniversary (周年纪念) of the signing of a friendship agreement called the Entente Cordiality .The agreement marked a new beginning for the countries following centuries of wars and love-hate partnership. But their relationship has been ups and downs over the past century. Just last year, there were fierce disagreements over the Iraq war-which British Prime Minister Tony Blair supported despite French President Jacques Chirac speaking out against it. This discomfort is expressed in Blair and Chirac’s body language at international meetings. While the French leader often greets German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder with a hug (拥抱) ,Blair just receives a handshake. However, some political experts say the war in Iraq could in fact have helped ties. The history of divisions may well be because of the very different ways in which the two sides see the world. But this doesn’t stop 12 million Britons taking holidays in France each year. However, only 3 million French come in the opposite direction. Surveys (调查) show that most French people reel closer to the Germans than they do to the British. And the research carried out in Britain has round that only a third of the population believes the French can be trusted. Perhaps this bad feelingcomes because the British dislike France’s close relationship with Germany, or because the French are not happy with Britain’s close links with the US. Whatever the answer is, as both sides celebrate 100 years of “doubtful friendship”, they are at least able to make jokes about each other. Here’s one: What’s the best thing about Britain’s relationship with France? The English Channel. (320 words)∙、For centuries, the relationship between Britain and France is__________.∙ A. friendly B. impolite C. brotherly D. a mixture of love and hate∙、The war in Iraq does _________ to the relationship between France and Britain.∙ A. good B. harm C. neither good nor harm D both good and harm∙、The British are not so friendly to________ and the French are not so friendly to _________.∙ A. The smoke also contains many gases, most of which cannot be seen. Altogether, they make up the serious problems of air pollution. In so many places it keeps us from seeing the sun, irritates our eyes, causes us to cough and makes us ill. Air pollution can spread from city to city. It even spreads from one country to another. Some northern European countries have had “black snow” from pollutants that have traveled through the air from other countries and have fallen with the snow. So air pollution is a global problem. It can kill babies, older people and those who have respiratory disease. In 1952, four thousands people die in one week as a result of a serious air pollution breakout in London. In 1948 in a small town of Pennsylvania, 20 people died in a four-day period of air pollution. As often found in cities, air pollution increases the risk of lung disease, such as bronchitis and asthma. Of course, smoking and other factors help to cause these illnesses, too, but these causes have increased greatly during recent years as air pollution has become worse.∙∙ A. Short-term goals are those that usually deal with current activities which we can apply on a daily basis. Such goals can be achieved in a week or less, or two weeks, or possibly, months. It should be remembered that just as building is no stronger than its foundation, long-term goals cannot amount to very munch without the achievement of solid short-term goals. Upon completing our short-term goals, we should date the occasion and then add new short-term goals that will build on those that have been completed. The intermediate goals build on the foundation of the short-term goals. They might deal with just one term of school or the entire school year, or they could even extend for several years. Any time you move a step at a time, you should never allow yourself to become discouraged or overwhelmed. As you complete each step, you will enforce the belief in your ability to grow and succeed. And as your list of completion dates grow, your motivation and desire will increase. Long-term goals may be related to our dreams of the future. They might cover five years or more. Life is not。

Not only does he want to say it well, but he wants it to be something which has not been said before. He hopes the public will listen and understand –- he wants to teach them, and he wants them to learn from him. What visual artists like painters want to teach is easy to make out but difficult to explain, because painters translate their experiences into shapes and colors, not words. They seem to feel that a certain selection of shapes and colors, out of the countless billions possible, is exceptionally interesting for them and worth showing to us. Without their work we should never have noticed these particular shapes and colors, or have felt the delight which they brought to the artist. Most artists take their shapes and colors from the world of nature and from human bodies in motion and repose; their choices indicate that these aspects of the world are worth looking at, that they contain beautiful sights. Contemporary artists mightsay that they merely choose subjects that provide an interesting pattern, that there is nothing more in it. Yet even they do not choose entirely without reference to the character of their subjects. If one painter chooses to paint gangrenous leg and another a lake in moonlight, each of them is directing our attention to a certain aspect of the world. Each painter is telling us something, showing us something, emphasizing something—all of which means that, consciously or unconsciously, he is trying to teach us.(1).It is hard to explain what a painter is saying because_______A.most painters do not express themselves wellB. a painter uses unusual words and phrasesC. a painter uses shapes and colors instead of wordsD.many painters do not say anything(2).An artist’s choice of shapes and colors indicates that he believes them to be ____A. meaningful in themselvesB. merely beautifulC. a reflection of his experiencesD. worth looking at(3).The writer says that contemporary artists might say their choice of subject _____.A.carries a message to the publicB. only provides interesting patternsC. has no pattern of formD. teaches the public important truths(4).The writer says that contemporary art contains ______.A. nothing but meaningless patternsB. uninteresting aspects of the worldC. subjects chosen partly for their meaningD. completely meaningless subjects(5).The passage implied that_________.A. A painting is more easily understood than a symphonyB. Art is merely the arranging of shape and colorC. Every artist tries to say something to the publicD. One must look beyond shape and color to find what the artist is saying2.After practicing as a surgeon for several years, Dr. Ginoux decided to apply for membership in the American College of Surgeons(美国外科医生学会), a highly selective and distinguished professional organization. As part of the application procedure (手续), Dr. Ginoux was asked to prepare a list of all the operations performed in the previous seven years. Slowly, as she worked on the long list, she began tofeel uncertain. She began to question some of her decisions. Had she used the best technique in that case? Maybe, in this case, she should have run one more test before operating? On the other hand, maybe she should have … Would the doctors on the selection committee understand that, as the only trained surgeonin the area, she usually could not get advice from others and therefore, had to relycompletely on her own judgment? For the first time, Dr. Ginoux felt lonely and isolated. The longer Dr. Ginoux worked on the application forms, the more depressed she became. As hope faded, she wondered if a “country doctor” had a realistic chance of being acc epted by the American College of Surgeons.(1).Dr. Ginoux was working in _______.A. a large cityB. the American College of SurgeonsC. an area far from any big cityD. a selective organization(2).The application forms must include ___.A. the decision procedureB. a record of all the operations.C. the best techniqueD. a list of advice and judgments(3).It was most probable that Dr. Ginoux was ____A. a member in that organizationB. a well-trained surgeonC. a graduate from the American College of SurgeonsD. a distinguished surgeon in America(4).When she was filling the application froms, Dr. Ginoux began to be____.A. realisticB. distinguishedC. perplexedD. decisive(5).When filling the forms, Dr. Ginoux felt depressed because _____.A. she didn’t perform enough operationsB. some operations were unsuccessfulC. she didn’t get advice from the selection committeeD.she was doubtful about her operations3.An important new industry, oil refining, grew after the Civil War. Crude oil, or petroleum – a dark, thick ooze from the earth – had been known for hundreds of years. But little use had ever been madeof it. In the 1850’s Samuel M. Kier, a manufacturer in the western Pennsylvania, began collecting the oil from local seepages andrefining it into kerosene, Refining, like smelting, is a process of removing impurities from a raw material.Kerosene was used to light lamps. It was a cheap substitute for whale oil, which was becoming harder to get. Soon there was a large demand for kerosene. People began to search for new supplies of petroleum. The first oil well was drilled by E. L. Drake, a retired railroad conductor. In 1859 he began drilling in Titusville, Pennsylvania. The whole venture seemed so impractical and foolish that onlookers called it “Drake’s Folly”. But when he had drilleddown about 70 feet (21 meters), Drake struck oil. His well began to yield 20 barrels ofcrude oil a day.News of Drake’s success brought oil prospectors to the scene. By the early 1860’s these wildcatters were dril ling for “black gold” all over western Pennsylvania. The boom rivaled the California gold rush of 1848 in its excitement and Wild West atmosphere. And it brought far more wealth to the prospectors than any gold rush.Crude oil could be refined into many products. For some years kerosene continued to be the principal one. It was sold in grocery stores and door-to-door. In the 1880’s refiners learned how to make other petroleum products such as waxes and lubricating oils. Petroleum was not then used to make gasoline or heating oil.(1).Which of the following is the best title for the passage?A. Oil Refining: A Historical PerspectiveB. The California Gold Rush: Get Rich QuicklyC. Private Property: Trespassers Will Be ProsecutedD. Kerosene Lamps: Trespassers Will Be Prosecuted(2).It can be inferred from the passage that Kerosene was preferable to whale oil because whale oil was too ________.A. expensiveB. thickC. hotD.polluted(3).Why does the author mention the California gold rush?A. to explain the need for an increased supply of goldB. toindicate the extent of United States mineral wealth C. to describethe mood when oil was first discovered D. to argue that gold was more valuable than oil(4).The word “one” in the second sentence of the last para graph could best be replaced by which of the following words?A. oilB. doorC. storeD. product(5).The author mentions all of the following as possible products of crude oil EXCEPTA. waxB. gasolineC. KeroseneD. plastic4.Are you planning a vacation? If you like hot and extremely dry summers, go to Phoenix, Arizona. For hot temperatures but lots ofrain and thunderstorms, try Miami, Florida. If you want average temperatures and rainfall, St. Louis, Missouri, is the spot. Or ifyou're a cold weather fan, head to Fairbanks, Alaska. Its winters are very cold with little precipitation. Each of these citieshas acertain type of weather. The average weather for a place over many years is called climate, and in no two places in the world is it exactly the same. How can this be?Many things in nature, such as sunshine, temperature, and precipitation, affect climate. Nearness to mountain, oceans, and large lakes affects it too. Another factor is altitude, or height above sea level. Air cools as altitude increases. So a city at a higher altitude may be colder than one at a lower altitude. Finally, winds affect climate. They move heat and moisture between the oceans and continents. Winds keep the tropics from overheating. They keepthe polar regions from getting overly cold.Climate changes over long periods of time. Some scientists think, for example, that the earth's climate changed at the time of the dinosaurs. They think the dinosaurs died because of the change. What causes a climate to change? One possible cause may be changes in the sun. Sunspots, for example, are cool, dark spots that form on the sun. Sunspots may decrease precipitation on the earth and cause unusually dry periods. Changes in the atmosphere may change climate too. Volcanic eruptions, for instance, release solid particles into the air. These particles may form a cloud that blocks out the sun's heat. Human activity is another cause of climate change. Air pollution and the reduction of forest cover may have long-term effects on climate. This passage is concerned with things that affect _________.A. precipitationB. climateC. altitudeD. sunspots(2).Change in climate may have caused ___________.A. dinosaurs to dieB. dark spots to form on the sunC. volcanic eruptionD. air pollution(3).The effect of a volcanic eruption on climate may be to make it_________.A. wetterB. dryerC. warmerD. colder(4).To help readers understand how climate can change, the writeruses______.A. examplesB. a story about the seashoreC. order of importanceD. a strong argument(5).Which of the following is the place of greatest altitude on a mountain?A. the foot of the mountainB. 8,500 feet up the mountainC. the top of the mountainD. 15,785 feet up the mountain答案:一、单项选择题(60分,共 60 题,每小题 1 分)1. 你的观点;2.阐述你的理由;3.结论,重申观点。
It is true that many university campuses, especially those of the famous ones, have recently become the new tourist attractions. Some people are quite in favor of the campus’ opening to tourists while others are opposed to it. The opening of campus will stimulate the tourist industry, but the easier access to campus will lead to some accidents or safety problems which will interfere in s tudents’ life.In my opinion, campuses can be open to tourists once a week, say, on Saturday or Sunday. This suggestion, I believe, is quite workable because it could kill two birds with one stone. For one thing, campuses could attract many tourists on weekends, thus boosting the tourism. For another, restricted opening of campus will beneficially narrow the gap between campuses and the outside world. Furthermore, this will also attract more public attention and build a great reputation for the university.Unit Two4.翻译(十选五,每题3分,共15分)1). 美国文化的一个特点就是尊重自我奋斗者,即通过自身努力成功的人。

The Peace Corps was established by executive order in 1961 by President John F. Kennedy and approved by Congress as a permanent agency within the State Department later that year. The program came about during the Cold War and was designed to oppose the Soviet challenge to Western influence in the widely open Third World area of superpower competition. More than 180,000 Americans have served in the Peace Corps since its beginning.Purpose & functionThe program officially has three goals. The first is to help the people of interested countries and areas in meeting their needs for trained workers. The second is to help promote a better understanding of Americans on the part of the peoples served. And the third is to help promote a better understanding of other peoples on the part of Americans. The Peace Corps works by first announcing its availability to foreign governments. These governments then determine areas in whichthe organization can be involved. The organization then matches the requested assignments to its pool of applicants and sends those volunteers with the appropriate skills to the countries that first made the requests. Background & historySince the end of the Second World War, various members of the United States Congress had proposed bills to establish volunteer organizations in the Third World. In 1952 Senator Brien McMahon proposed an "army" of young Americans to act as "bringers of democracy". Privately funded non-religious organizations had been sending volunteers overseas since the 1950s.John F. Kennedy first announced his own idea for such an organization during the 1960 presidential campaign at a late-night speech at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor on October 14. During a later speech in San Francisco, California on November 1, he named this proposed organization the "Peace Corps". Critics of the program (including Kennedy's opponent, and future United States president, Richard M. Nixon) claimed the program would be nothing but a place for young people to hide from military service. Others doubted whether college-aged volunteers had the necessary skills. The idea was popular among most college students, however, and Kennedy continued to pursue it, asking respected academics such as Max Millikan and Chester Bowles to help him outline the organization and its goals. During his opening address as president, Kennedy again promised to create the program.Established & approvedOn March 1, 1961, Kennedy signed an Executive Order which officially started the Peace Corps. Concerned with the growing tide of revolutionary feelings in the Third World, Kennedy saw the Peace Corps as a means of countering the notions of the "Ugly American", especially in the emerging nations of postcolonial Africa and Asia.On March 4, Kennedy appointed Sargent Shriver to be the program's first director. Shriver was tasked with fleshing out the organization, which he did with the help of Warren W. Wiggins and others. Shriver and his think tank outlined the three major goals of the Peace Corps and decided the number of volunteers they needed to recruit. The program began recruiting volunteers thatfollowing July.Until about 1967, applicants to the Peace Corps had to pass a placement test that tested "general knowledge" (knowledge of various skills needed for various Peace Corps assignments) and language ability. After an address from Kennedy, who was introduced by Rev. Russell Fuller of Memorial Christian Church, Disciples of Christ, on August 28, 1961, the first group of volunteers left for Ghana and Tanzania. The program was formally approved by Congress on September 22, 1961 and within two years over 7,300 Peace Corps volunteers were serving in 44 countries. This number would jump to 15,000 in June of 1966, the largest number in the organization's history.Early troubles for the Peace CorpsThough the organization was begun with the noblest of intentions, it experienced a big controversy in its very first year of operation. On October 13, 1961, a postcard written by a volunteer named Marjorie Michelmore in Nigeria to her boyfriend in the US caused some problems. In it, she described Nigeria as "ugly and absolutely primitive in living conditions". This postcard, however, never made it out of the country. A student at the University College at Ibadan found it and made copies to distribute around campus. Nigerian students accused the volunteers of being spies of the US government. Soon the international press picked up the story and this led several people in the US administration to question the future of the program as a whole. Nigerian students protested the program, and the American volunteers hid themselves away and eventually began a hunger strike. After several days, the Nigerian students agreed to open a dialogue with the Americans.Independent statusIn July 1971, President Nixon brought the Peace Corps under the umbrella agency, ACTION. The Peace Corps would remain under ACTION until President Jimmy Carter declared it fully independent in a 1979 executive order. This independent status would be further secured when Congress passed legislation in 1981 to make the organization an independent federal agency.Programs branching outAt this time, the Peace Corps began branching out past its traditional concerns of education- and agriculture-related projects. In 1982, Director Loret Miller Ruppe began several newbusiness-related programs. For the first time, a large number of conservative and Republican volunteers joined the group of overseas volunteers, and the organization continued to reflect the evolving political and social conditions in the United States.Funding cuts during the early 1980s dropped the number of volunteers to 5,380, its lowest level since the organization's early years. Funding began to increase in 1985, and Congress passed an initiative to raise the number of volunteers to 10,000 by 1992.After the September 11, 2001 attacks alerted the nation to growing anti-US feelings in the Middle East, President George W. Bush pledged to double the size of the organization within five years as a part of the War on Terrorism. For 2004, Congress passed a budget increase at $325 million, $30 million above that of 2003 but $30 million below the President's request. Now, the Peace Corps is trying to double the number of volunteers it sends abroad by 2007. This is in accordance with Bush's request in 2002. According to Joseph Kennedy, "The American reputation has taken a hit in the last couple of years. The need for the Peace Corps couldn't be more urgent than it is right now, at this moment. The Peace Corps shows what is best in America, the generosity of spirit." The Peace Corps is trying to get more diverse volunteers of different ages. It is the grizzly bear (灰熊). Grizzlies (灰熊) can sprint thirty-five plus miles an hour, smell fish at nine or more miles, and drag a thousand-pound animal up steep mountains. The grizzly bear is one of a very few remaining on earth that can kill a human in physical combat. It can remove a human head with a single hit, or cause serious harm to a person in rapid order. Within the last wilderness areas where they live, they are the undisputed king of all beasts. I know this all very well. My name is Timothy Treadwell, and I live with the wild grizzly."Timothy Treadwell (April 29, 1957-October 5, 2003), born Timothy Dexter, gave a warning here that we should all pay attention to. Animals, particularly the bears he knew well, can be deadly. As it turns out, Treadwell should've taken his own advice and respected the danger these animals present. He should've kept his distance from them. If he had, he might be with us today.Who was Timothy Treadwell?Treadwell was an environmentalist and bear enthusiast who lived among the Coastal brown bears of Katmai National Park in Alaska for approximately 13 seasons. At the end of his thirteenth season in the park in 2003, he and his girlfriend Amie Huguenard (age 37) were killed and partially eaten by a brown bear. The attack was notable because of the unusual lifestyle of the victims, and the survival of an audio recording of the attack. Treadwell's life, work, and death were the subject of the 2005 documentary film by Werner Herzog titled Grizzly Man.Life StoryBorn in Long Island, New York, much of what is known of Timothy Treadwell's life is documented by Treadwell himself. Treadwell characterized himself as an actor, recovering alcoholic, former drug user, and hero of the wild. According to his personal accounts, he became involved with drugs after failing to gain the role won by Woody Harrelson in the TV comedy Cheers. Treadwell claimed to his parents that he was second-choice for the role, but this has not been independently verified.Interest in bearsAfter several visits to Alaska in the early 1990's, Treadwell became interested in bears and, in the last 5 years of his life, documentedmany of his experiences and interactions with bears via home video. Treadwell attributed his recovery from drug use to his relationship with bears.By 2001, Treadwell became notable enough to receive extensive media attention both on television and in environmental circles. Through his videos, he became known for attempting to create personal relationships with the bears he worked with.As an activist, he actively communicated with the public, including traveling throughout the United States to educate school children about bears, and appearing on the Discovery Channel, Late Show with David Letterman, and Dateline NBC to discuss his experiences. He was also a co-author, with Jewel Palovak, of the book Among Grizzlies: Living with Wild Bears in Alaska, where he described his adventures in Alaska.Treadwell, along with his friends Jewel Palovak, and former American Gladiator Jonathan Byrne founded Grizzly People, a political organization devoted to protecting bears and preserving their wilderness home. Despite the organization's name, Treadwell did not associate with grizzly bears, a term properly applied only to brown bears that live farther inland.DeathIn October 2003, Treadwell and his girlfriend, Amie Huguenard, visited Katmai National Park in Alaska. Treadwell, who never carried any means of defense against bear attacks, chose to set his campsite near a stream where bears commonly feed in the fall. Treadwell was in the park later in the year than usual, at a time when bears fight to gain as much fat as possible before winter, and limited food supplies cause them to be more aggressive than in other months. It has been noted that food was scarce that fall, and the bears were therefore more aggressive than usual. On October 6, 2003, Treadwell and Huguenard's bodies were discovered by the Kodiak air taxi pilot who arrived at their campsite to pick them up from their trip. A large elderly male bear (tagged Bear 141) protecting the campsite was killed by park police while they attempted to get the bodies. A second adolescent bear was killed a short time later after it charged the park police. It was later shown that the first animal had consumed parts of the couples' remains. This bear is not believed to be one of the bears Treadwellusually encountered, though this point is disputed.A video camera, with the lens cap in place, was recovered at the site. The video camera had been turned on at some point during the fatal attack, presumably by Huguenard, but the camera recorded only six minutes of audio before running out of tape. Treadwell's head, partial backbone, and left arm and hand still wearing his wrist watch were recovered at the scene. Huguenard's partial body was found nearby somewhat buried in dirt. Methods and CriticismTreadwell's methods were generally thought unsound by bear experts and public alike. He named many of the bears he encountered and often moved close enough to them that he could touch them and interact with them on a personal level. Many wildlife experts objected to his methods, believing that his attitude toward the bears was too brave, that he ignored well-known dangers of working with bears, and that he thought of them too much as people. Experts also believe that he endangered the animals by making them too comfortable with humans, thus increasing the likelihood of dangerous encounters in the future. His death by bear attack is seen by some as a natural conclusion of his methods of interacting with bears. His critics also note that while Treadwell believed that he was protecting bears, control experts have stated that incidents of illegal hunting in the area were low and did not affect the population level. However, according to the "Grizzly People" organization he founded, five bears were killed in the year after his death, while none had been killed while he was present in Katmai. This last point is disputed.Grizzly Man, the FilmIn 2005, director Werner Herzog released Grizzly Man, a documentary about Treadwell's work with wildlife in Alaska, which aired on the Discovery Channel and is frequently rerun. It includes some of the film that Treadwell took, and also interviews with people who knew him, and his appearance on David Letterman. Grizzly Man is generally considered to have a critical take on Treadwell, his methods and his character; many people say that Grizzly Man made Treadwell look mentally unbalanced. However, Herzog does praise Treadwell's films and pictures.11.There are not many animals that can, like the grizzly,________________.A. inspire respect and fearB. live in wilderness areasC. kill a human in physical combatD. sprint thirty-five plus miles an hour12.Why was the attack on Treadwell and Huguenard notable?________________A. It is always interesting to visit another country, especially for those who have never traveled a great deal. Foreign travel can be very educational for anyone if he is interested enough to make preparations beforehand. Learning the language of the new country would be difficult for the traveler, 1 the benefits of such an effort would become obvious immediately on his arrival. It may not seem important to him when he comfortably stays at home, but knowing how to 2 a meal or book a room is necessary for the newcomer in a strange country. Without knowing the language, it is very difficult 3 the stranger to understand the people of the new country and their customs.Of course,in our small world it is often possible to find someone 4 understands our own, but this is only second–best for the traveler. Language is always changing. In a society where life continues year after year with few changes, the languages do not change either. The earliest known languages had difficult grammar but a small, limited vocabulary. Over the century, the grammar changed, and the vocabulary grew. For example, the English and Spanish people who came to America during the sixteenth century gave names to all the new plants and animals they found. In this way, hundreds of new words were introduced into English and Spanish vocabularies. Today life is changing very fast, and language is changing fast too. There are several major language families in the world. Some scientists say there are nine main families, but other scientists divided them differently. The languages in each family are connected, and scientists think that they came from the same parent language. About 3% of the people in the world speak languages that are not in these major families.• 1. The early language had many words and easy grammar.• A. T B. F• 2. Then, when the flowers and vegetables come up, one has got the reward together with those who have shared the secret of Nature. Some people, however, take no interest in country things: for them, happiness lies in the town, with its cinemas and theatres, beautiful shops and busy streets, dance-halls and restaurants. Such people would feel that their life was not worth living if they had to live it outside London. An occasional walk in one of the parks and a fortnight’s (two weeks) visit to the sea every summer is all the country they want:the rest they are quite prepared to leave to those who are glad to get away from London every night.• 1. Which of the following statements is NOT true? ___________ • A. People who love Nature prefer to live outside the city. B. People who work in London prefer to live in the country. C. Some people enjoying city life prefer to work and live inside London. D. Many nature lovers, though working in London, prefer to live outside the city.• 2. But the cultures of the two countries sometimes seem to be miles apart. Last Thursday Britain and France celebrated the 100th anniversary (周年纪念) of the signing of a friendship agreement called the Entente Cordiality. The agreement marked a new beginning for the countries following centuries of wars and love-hate partnership. But their relationship has been ups and downs over the past century. Just last year, there were fierce disagreements over the Iraq war – which British Prime Minister Tony Blair supported despite French president Jacques Chirac speaking out against it. This discomfort is may well be because of the very different ways in which the two sides see the world. But this doesn’t stop 12 million Britons taking holidays in France each year. However, only 3 million French come in the opposite direction. Surveys (调查) show that most French people feel closer to the Germans than they do to the British. And the research carried out in Britain has found that only a third of the population believes the French can be trusted. Perhaps this bad feeling comes because the British dislike France’s close relationship with Germany, or because the French are not happy with Britain’s close links w ith the US. Whatever the answer is, as both sides celebrate 100 years of “doubtful friendship”, they are at least able to make jokes about each other. Here’s one: What’s the best thing about Britain’s relationship with France? The English Channel.∙D1. For centuries, the relationship between Britain and France is _____.∙ A. friendly B. impolite C. brotherly D. a mixture of love and hate∙D2. What does the last sentence mean?__________∙ A. as long as the English Channel exists, no further disagreement will form between France and Britain. B. The English Channel can prevent anything unfriendly happening in both France and Britain. C. France and Britain are near neighbors, and this will help balance the relationship between them. D. The English Channel is the largest enemy between France and Britain.阅读理解18.How men first learnt to invent words is unknown: in other words, the origin of language is a mystery. Words become filled with meaning for us by experience; and the longer we live, the more certain words recall to us the glad and sad events of our past; and the more we read and learn, the more the number of words that mean something increases. Great writers are those who not only have great thoughts but also express these thoughts in words which appeal powerfully to our minds and emotions. Thischarming and telling use of words is what we call literary style. Above all, the real poet is a master of words. He can convey his meaning in words which sing like music and which by their position and association can move men to tears. We should therefore learn to choose our words carefully and use them accurately, or they will make our speech silly and vulgar.∙D1. The origin of language is ________________.∙ A. a legend handed down from the past B. a matter that is hidden or secret C. a question difficult to answer D. problem not yet solved∙C2. What is true about words? __________________.∙ A. They are used to express feelings only. B. They can not be written down. C. They are simply sounds. D. They are mysterious.∙D3. The real power of words lies in their ______________.∙ A. properties B. characteristics C. peculiarity D. representative function∙B4. By “association”, the auth or means ______________.∙ A. a special quality B. a joining of ideas in the mind C. an appearance which is puzzling D. a strange feature∙A5. Which of the following statements about the real poet is NOT true?_____________∙ A. He is no more than a master of words. B. He can convey his ideas in words which sing like music. C. He can move men to tears. D. His style is always charming.。

17.Britain and France are separated by the English Channel, a body of water that can be crossed in as few as 20 minutes. Perhaps this bad feeling comes because the British dislike France’s close relationship with Germany, or because the French are not happy with Britain’s close links with the US. Whatever the answer is, as both sides celebrate 100 years of “doubtful friendship”, they are at least able to make jokes about each other. Here’s one: What’s the best thing about Britain’s relationship with France? The English Channel.(D)错误!未找到引用源。
