For my 18th birthday, my parents surprised me with a trip to New Zealand to go on a full "Lord of the Rings" tour. As a huge fan of the movies, I have dreamed of visiting the breathtaking landscapes of Middle-earth for as long as I can remember. This adventure has left me in awe and with memories I will cherish forever.The journey began with a 14-hour flight from Chicago to Auckland. Despite the long travel time, my excitement prevented me from feeling any fatigue. I have watched all the spectacularaerial shots of New Zealand's terrain so many times in the films, but nothing could have prepared me for seeing it with my own eyes as we descended. The lush green valleys and towering mountains seemed More beautiful than any CGI trickery.Upon arrival, we have met up with our friendly tour guide, Mark, and the rest of our small group of 6 travelers. I have looked on in wonder at the majestic snow-capped peaks of the Remarkables mountain range which became a backdrop for scenes in the Misty Mountains.Perhaps most amazingly, we have traveled by helicopter into the secluded alpine areas of the Southern Alps which served as the trilogy's key locations. Stepping into areas virtually untouched by man, I have stood in the very footprints whereFrodo and Sam carried the ring toward Mordor in the Queenstown-Lakes region. I have picnicked where Aragorn battled the Uruk-hai at Amon Hen set in the Rangitata Valley. In the vast wilderness of the Arrowtown area, we have explored the forests of Fangorn, home of the Ents.While the scenery itself has been unforgettable, one of the biggest highlights has been meeting some of the crew and actors involved in the films. On a tour of the Weta Workshop near Wellington, we have gotten a behind-the-scenes look at how the immense props, costumes, and special effects were created. We even have the chance to hold the Academy Awards the films have won!During a special dinner in Queenstown, I have been starstruck by surprise appearances from Sean Astin (Samwise Gamgee), John Rhys-Davies (Gimli), and even Sir Ian McKellen, who has taken on voicing the wizard Gandalf with such iconic gravitas. Getting to speak with them, hear their stories, and thank them for their work in creating such an enduring fantasy world for me has been incredible.In addition to the Lord of the Rings sites, we have gone kayaking on the brilliantly blue waters of the Milford Sound, hiking glaciers in the Southern Alps, and even taken a terrifyingbungee jump over a 150m river gorge! New Zealand's beautiful variety of landscapes and adventures have amazed me every day.While the main purpose of the trip has centered around Middle-earth, I have learned so much about the history, culture, and spirit of New Zealand throughout our journey. The Maori people's reverence for nature and their land resonates with the films' core message of respecting and protecting what is precious.I have gained a deep appreciation for the country's cultural values and commitment to preserving its stunning natural settings. The small towns and communities we have visited all take immense pride in the role they played in the movies' unforgettable locations.As I have reflected on everything I've experienced over these past two weeks, it has struck me how perfectly New Zealand has embodied the vast, ancient, and enchanting essence of Tolkien's fictional realm. No Hollywood studio or computer-generated backdrop could ever replicate the authenticity and magic this country has provided.I feel immensely grateful to my parents for gifting me this incredible opportunity.
