Not far away, a three-story house attracted my eyes.It was nothing like the one I lived in with my mother, a small dark place with rules about befriending others. “Don’t. Never, ever talk to anyone,” my mother said. One day, in sixth grade, a black-haired woman was introduced to our class: Mrs. Reese. Reese explained that she was starting Spanish Club. She invited anyone interested in learning Spanish language and culture to stay after school.I could not take my eyes off her bracelets(手镯) and shining rings. The bell rang, and to my shock, no one went up to Mrs. Reese. I was under strict orders to go straight home. But that day, I stayed. I asked Mrs. Reese when the club started.“We could begin right now if you like,”she said with a smile. I felt beautiful. That day I learned that the house of my dreams was her house. I learned how to answer questions about my age and my favorite food in Spanish. And I learned, Do you want to come over tomorrow for cooking lessons?I wanted to say “Yes”, but Mom’s words held me back.I begged my mother all summer and into fall, well after Spanish Club had dissolved. I wept at night sometimes, so worried that Mrs. Reese and her family would move away.At some point, I managed to wear my mother down and one Saturday afternoon. I rode out to Mrs. Reese’s house. The details of that afternoon are marked in my mind: We had tea. She painted my toenails red. We made a garlicky picadillo. We spoke in Spanish. In Spanish, my voice was loud and romantic. This is the real me! I remember thinking. My mother never permitted me another visit to Mrs. Reese’s house. But four decades later, I still remember that day and the life she showed me, proof of a possible future.24.What kind of family was the author from?A. Hard-upB. Two-parentC. Stress-freeD. The beauty of SpanishB. The wonder of a new worldC. The power of self-confidenceD. The importance of independenceCEnglish is full of colorful phrases to describe shyness. Someone shy might be called shrinking violet or a wallflower, while for especially nervous types we have the curious expression: they wouldn’t say boo to a goose.None of these are traditionally seen as positive descriptions, even if you like geese. In a culture of go-getting, high achievers, shy people don’t come first.Or that's what the self-help industry would have you believe. Bookshops are filled with vital tomes(巨著) that promise to help beat social fears and find success in life, love and business. That is why one book, Shrinking Violets: A Field Guide to Shyness, bucks the trend. It became a sudden success across English-language media recently for its new take-on shyness.Author Joe Moran says that despite struggling with shyness and longing for loneliness all his life, being shy can also be "a gift". Freed from the constant urge to participate and compete in social situations, people are liberated to look at the world in new ways, and gain fresh insights.Indeed, many of the world's great thinkers and artists are introverts(内向的人). Scientists Charles Darwin and Albert Einstein preferred their own company; actress Keira Knightley often finds herself tongue-tied at parties; and Harry Potter author JK Rowling claims she used to be too nervous to even borrow a pen.Moran told BBC Future: "I think shyness probably does turn you into an amateur anthropologist(人类学家), really-you are more likely to be an observer."So, while extroverts make all the noise, they don't necessarily have the best ideas. If you're shy, you've probably known this for a long time. You just don't shout about it.28.When someone is being called a wallflower, he is being .A. praised for his graceB. admired for his characterC. laughed at for his shynessD. told off for his nervousness29.The underlined phrase “bucks the trend” in Paragraph 2 probably means ””.A. going against the trend and succeedsB. changing the public idea completelyC. becoming unpopular and unacceptedD. becoming the major concern of people30.The author mentioned many famous shy people in order to .A. point out the harm shyness bringsB. disconnect shyness and successC. shows the reasons for shynessD. prove shyness contributes to science31.What is the author’s attitude towards shyness?A. OpposedB. IndifferentC. SupportiveD. CriticalDFrigatebirds seagoing fliers with a 6-foot wingspan, can stay aloft(up in the air) for weeks at a time, a new study has found.Since the frigatebird spends most of its life at sea, its habits outside of when it reproduces on land aren’t well-known-until researchers started tracking them around the Indian Ocean. What the researchers discovered is that the bird’s flying ability is unbelievable.Ornithologist(鸟类学家) Henri Weimerskirch put satellite tage(标签) on a couple of dozen frigatebirds. When the data started to come in, he could hardly believe how high the birds flew."First, we found, 'Whoa, 1,500 meters. Excellent,' " says Weimerskirch, "And after 2,000, after 3,000, after 4,000 meters-OK, at this altitude they are in freezing conditions, especially surprising for a tropical bird.""There is no other bird flying so high relative to the sea surface," he says. "It's the only bird that is known to intentionally enter into a cloud," Weimerskirch says. And not just any cloud-a soft, white cumulus cloud(积云). Over the ocean, these clouds tend to form in places where warm air rises from the sea surface. The birds take a ride on the current of rising air, all the way up to the top of the cloud.Frigatebirds have to find ways to stay aloft because they can't land on the water. Since their feathers aren't waterproof, the birds would drown in short order. They feed by harassing other birds in flight until they bring whatever fish they've swallowed back into their mouth and the frigatebird takes it.So in between meals, frigatebirds fly higher... and higher. In one case, for two months-continuously aloft. One of the tagged birds flew 40 miles without a wing-flap. Several covered more than 300 miles a day on average, and flew continuously for weeks. They are blessed with an unusual body. No bird has a larger wing surface area compared with body weight.32.How did researchers feel when data about frigatebirds reached them?A. CalmB. SurprisedC. HopefulD. Anxious33.According to the text, how can frigatebirds fly so high?A. By flying into a cloudB. With the help of researchersC. Thanks to advanced technologyD. By following other birds into the sky34.What does the underlined word ”they” in the text refer to?A. FrigatebirdsB. Other birdsC. Small fishD. Larger fish35.In what aspect are frigatebirds different from other birds?A. When they give birthB. What they feed onC. Their body weightD. Their wing surface area第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

Its official designation(称号)is thus 1I 2017 U1, with the “I” (33) ____for" interstellar (星际的)”- the first time this designation has ever been used. That is exciting. Some scientists, though, (34)______ an even more exciting possibility: what if Oumuamua is not an asteroid(小行星) as most think, but an alien spacecraft? Asteroids come in all sorts of shapes and sizes, but"Oumuamua seems particularly odd. As best as astronomers can tell, it is cigarlike, being (35)______180 metres long but only about 30 metres wide. That makes it longer and thinner than anything known of in the in the solar system. Such a shape would be a (36)_____ choice for a spaceship, since it would minimize the scouring effect of interstellar dust. With that in mind the Breakthrough Listen Project, an organization devoted to (37)______ for alien life, plans to turn the world’s biggest steerable radio telescope, the Green Bank instrument in Virginia, towards oumuamua to see if it can hear anything interesting. Oumuamua is (38)_______ about twice as far from Earth as Earth is from the sun. At that range, the telescope should be(39)____enough to pick up a transmitter about as powerful as a mobile phone after just a few beconds-worth of observations, will it find anything? Almost certainly not, Oumuamua has the same reddish colour as many asteroids, so presumably has a similar(40)_____. And, if it really is a spaceship, it is odd that signs of its artificial origin have not been seen already-and also odd that it is tumbling. It could, in theory, be deserted. But in that case the telescope is unlikely to hear anything. By far the most likely option is that it is exactly what it seems to be: a wandering hunk of space rock, although one that has come to the solar system from the vast voids between the stars.IIL Reading Comprehension (45%)Section ADirections: For each blank in the following passage there are few words or phrases marked A,B ,C and D. The clips included sections that ended in interruption-while (43) ____out the interruptions themselves. More often than not, those hearing the interrupted phrases thought that the prime minister was (44)______her conversational turn. It seems her interviewer had come to a (45)_____ conclusion. Why? Conversation, it turns out, is a finely tuned machine, as Nick Enfield, a linguist at the University of Sydney, suggests in "How We Talk. Humans mostly follow a rule called" no (46)_____, no overlap(重叠)”, reacting to the end of a conversational tum by beginning their own in about 200 milliseconds -about the time it takes a sho-distaperumner to (47)______ to the starting gun. This is all the more remarkable(48)_____ it takes about 600 milliseconds for someone to work out what they are going to say by mentally finding the words and organizing how they are to be expressed.People, ( 49)______must plan to begin speaking before their conversation (50)______has stopped. That requires a fine attention o the Cues signalling the end of a turn, such as a lengthening of syllables and a drop in pitch( 音高). As it happens, using a downward shift of pitch is also a frequent piece of advice given to those who want to sound more (51)______-like Thatcher. The researchers studying the times she was interrupted found precisely that a sharp(52)______in her pitch accurately predicted an interruption.(53)_____ popular assumptions, many dynamics of the "conversational machine" are similar from culture to culture, something that Mr Enfield (54)______by looking at both big and small languages in rich and poor countries alike. C and D.Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have justread.(A)Mrs. Bridge said that she judged people by their shoes and by their manners at the table. If someone wore shoes with run-over heels, or shoes that had not been shined for a long time, or shoes with broken laces, you could be pretty sure this person would be careless in other things as well. And there was no better way to judge a persons background than by watching him or her at the table. The children learned it was impolite to talk while eating, or to chew with the mouth open, and as they grew older they learned the more subtle manners not to butter an entire slice of bread, not to take more than one biscuit at a time, unless, of course, the hostess should insist. They were taught to keep their elbows close to their sides while cutting meat, and to hold the utensils in the tips of their fingers. They resisted the temptation to sup up the gravy with a piece of bread, and they made sure to leave a little of everything-not enough to be called wasteful, but just a little to indicate the meal had been suit And ally, they learned that a lady or a gentleman does not fold up a napkin after eating in a public place. The girls absorbed these matters with greater facility than Douglas, who tended to ask the son for everything, sometimes observing that he thought it was all pretty silly. He seemed particularly unable to eat with his left hand lying in his lap; he wanted to leave it on the table, to prop himself up, us it were, and claimed be got a backache with one arm in his lap. Mrs, Bridge told him this was absurd, and when he wanted to know why he could not put his elbow on the table she replied, " Do you want to be different from everyone else?”Douglas was doubtful, but after a long silence, and under the weight of his mother’stranquil gaze, he at last concluded he didn’t.The American habit of switching implement, however, continued to give him trouble andmake him rebellious. With elaborate care he would put down the knife, reach high across hisplate and descend on the left side to pick up the fork, raising it high over the plate again as hereturned to the starting position."Now sop acting ridiculous, " she told him one day at lunch.Well, I sure bet the Egyptians don’t have to eat this way,” he muttered, giving “Egyptians” a vengeful emphasis.“I doubt if they do, she replied calmly, expertly cutting a tr iangle of pineapple from hersalad, "but you' re not an Egyptinn, So you eat the way Americans eat, and that’s final.”56. He didn’t think Americans should learn from the Egyptians.C. He thought Egyptians used to have strict rules about eatingD. The problem is not that the information exists but that it reaches the wrong people. Information on the Internet could bring great benefits to society, and to individuals, when huge datasets(数据集集) can yield information otherwise unavailable. But once the information is gathered, a precautionary principle has to apply. It is unreasonable to agree with John Perry Barlow, the Internet rights pioneer, when he wittily remarked that "relying on the government to protect your privacy is like asking a peeping Tom to install your window blinds"; but it does not help when it appears that everything the public sector does with the huge datasets it has will be overseen by the media.Governments need to keep our trust; but technology wears away privacy in two ways. The first is simply smartphones. Most Britons-70%-now carry around with them devices which record and report their location, their friends and their interests all the time. The second is the ease with which two or more datasets can be combined to bring out secrets that are apparent in neither set on its own Now nearly 90% of the US population can be uniquely identified simply by combining their gender, date of birth and postal code. All kinds of things can be reliably inferred from freely available data: four likes on Facebook are usually enough to reveal a person's standard of spouse selection.Underlying such problems is human psychology. No one forces anybody to reveal their preferences on Facebook. The latest spectacular breach (泄露) of privacy came when the exercise app Strava published a global map of the 3 trillion data points its users had uploaded, which turned out to reveal the location of secret US military bases around the world. But the chance to boast about where you have been and how fast you were moving is exactly what makes Strava popular. Psychology, as much as technology, made this a massive security breach The users gave enthusiastic consent(允许), but it was fantastically ill-informed. Then again how could anyone give informed consent when not even the firms that collect the data can know how it will be used? The protection of private data from unintentional disclosure(公开) is primarily a social or psychological problem. What’s needed is a chance of attitude among those who harvest and process the data. They need constantly to ask themselves -or to be asked by society- how this information could be used for harm, and how to prevent that from happening.63. The underlined word“overseen”in Paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to“______”A supervised B. disturbed C. overlooked D. underestimated64. The Strava incident is recalled to indicate____________.A. users should have stopped the app from publicly broadcasting their locationB. users should be reliably informed before giving consent for access to their dataC. users give away their personal data to satisfy their basic human desiresD. users have lost confidence in the government to protect their privacy65. According to the writer, the key to solving privacy problems is_____.A. for technicians to upgrade smartphone systems and instruct social media behaviorB. for data providers to give informed consent before using any appC for the government to ban the unapproved in formation exchange between datasetsD. for the data collectors to ensure the appropriate use of data66. Which of the following is the best title of the passage?A. Two datasets are better than oneB. It's the psychology, stupidC. Technology: a two-edged swordD. No privacy on the Internet, experts warnSection CDirections: Read the following passage. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. EachA new sort of convenience store opened in the basement of the headquarters of Amazon in Seattle in January. Customers walk in, scan their phones, pick what they want off the shelves and walk out again. At Amazon Go there are no checkouts and no cashiers. Instead, it is what the tech giant calls “just walk out" shopping, made possible by a new generation of machines that can sense which and what they are picking off the shelves. Within a minute or two of the shopper leaving the store, a receipt pops up on their phone for items they bought. This is the shape of things to come in food retailing(零售业). 67.________________. There is a downside to Amazon Go, even though consumers benefit from lower prices and don't waste time in queues. The store is only open to shoppers who can download an app on their smartphone, which rules out those who rely on welfare food stamps.Change is always disturbing but the likely result of the next wave of automation will be especially celebrated. 68. ___________________.They can do things or will eventually be able to do things that were once the exclusive preserve of humans. That, however, means higher growth but also the risk that the owners of the machines get richer and richer while those displaced get angrier and angrier.69.____________. A robot tax a tax that firms would pay if machines were taking the place of humans-would slow down the pace of automation by making the machines more expensive but this too has costs, especially for a country such as Britain, which has a problem with low investment, low productivity and a shrunken industrial base. The UK has 33 robot units per 10, 000 workers, compared with 93 in the US and 213 in Japan, which suggests the need for more automation not less. On the plus side, the UK has more small and medium-sized companies in artificial intelligence than Germany or France. 70.____________.The big issue is not whether the robots are coming, because they are. It is not even whether they will boost growth, because they will.IV. Summary Writing (10%)Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible. When Is Healthy Food the Best Medicine? When it's FreeThat old saying “An apple a day keeps the doctor away " may hold some truth. In fact, one study found that in 2012, almost half of the deaths in America caused by heart disease, stroke, and type2 diabetes(∏型糖尿病病) were linked to poor diet. But knowing you should eat healthfully and actually doing it are two different things, and making the right choice isn't any easier when a pound of grapes costs more than twice as much as a pound of pasta(意大利面) The Fresh Food Pharmacy aims to change that. A pilot program created by the Geisinger Health System, a hospital network in Pennsylvania and southern New Jersey, this pharmacy resembles a grocery store stocked with fresh produce, lean meats, canned beans, and more. Even better, it's all free.Under the program, patients with type 2 diabetes and qualifying income are prescribed a week’s worth of food for their entire household, and dietitians(营养师) show them how to transform it into healthy meals. After the first year, all 180 participants had improved in key health measurements, in particular their hemoglobin Alc levels(HbAlc), the gold standard for tracking blood sugar control. In 2012, the estimated costs associated with diabetes in the United States were S245 billion. Geisinger will spend only about $1,000 annually on each food-pharmacy patient. David Feinberg, Geisinger's president and CEO, calculates that "a decrease in HbAlc of one point saves us about $8,000 " With many of the patients dropping three points, the program could save $24,000 or more a year in health-care costs.Geisinger isn't the only organization experimenting with produce prescriptions. Nonprofits, food banks, hospitals, and even doctors’ offices around the country have implemented programsthat bring the "food is medicine " concept to life.V. Nadia would not reply to anything Kate said. Kate was in charge of showing Nadia around on her first day at Buckminster Grade School. Kate could not figure out why the school had put out Nadia in a class where she could not understand what people were saying."Why did they do this? " Kate wondered aloud. "I mean, you can't learn if you can't understand the teacher."Nadia's voice was a whisper. "I understand English. I will learn." Nadia's English was perfect.Kate was TAL#NBSP perplexed. She couldn't understand why Nadia did not like to speak. Then she realized that moving to a new country probably wasn't the easiest thing to do. There were hundreds of unfamiliar and unusual things to learn—all at the same time."There're a lot of new things to learn, huh? " said Kate.Nadia nodded rapidly. In a quiet voice she replied. "Many things people say, I do not understand I have been speaking English and Romanian all my life, but I do not know what some children are saying. For example yesterday a boy asked if I could help him find the USB port on a thin black box he was carrying. Isn't a port a place for ships? It made no sense to me.""Don't worry." said Kate. "You'll figure everything out in time. You see, that thin black box was a computer. A USB port is a place where you can connect other machines to a computer."Nadia and Kate were quiet after that. They took notes while the teacher gave a maths lesson. To Kate's surprise, Nadia put up her hand and offered to answer questions at the blackboard.Nadia handled every question the teacher gave her. But early horses weren't tame(驯服的) enough to perform these kinds of tasks. Scientists think the first interactions humans had with horses were far different from those today.Thousands of years ago, people killed the wild horses that lived around them for food. Over time, people began to catch the animals and raise them. This was the first step in domestication. As people began to tame and ride horses, they chose to keep those animals that had more desirable characteristics. For example, people may have chosen to keep horses that had a gentle personality so they could be ridden more easily. People who used horses to pull heavy loads would have chosen to keep stronger animals. Characteristics like strength are partly controlled by the animals' genes. So as the domesticated horses reproduced, they passed the characteristics on to their young. Each new generation of houses would show more of these chosen characteristics.Modern day horse breeds come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. This variety didn't exist in the horse population before domestication. The Shetland horse is one of the smallest breeds—typically reaching only one meter tall. With short, strong legs, the animals were bred to pull coal out of mine shafts (矿井) with low ceilings. Huge horses like the Clydesdale came on the scene around 1700. People bred these heavy, tall horses to pull large vehicles used for carrying heavy loads. The domestication of horses has had great effects on societies. For example, horses were important tools in the advancement of modern agriculture. Using them to pull ploughs and carry heavy loads allowed people to farm more efficiently. Before they were able to ride horses, humans had to cross land on foot. Riding horses allowed people to travel far greater distance in much less time. That encouraged populations living in different areas to interact with one another. The new form of rapid transportation helped cultures spread around the world.(1) Before domestication horses were.A. caught for sportsB. hunted for foodC. made to pull ploughsD. used to carry people(2) The author uses the Shetland horse as an example to show.A. it is smaller than the Clydesdale horseB. horse used to have gentle personalitiesC. some horses have better shaped than othersD. horses were of less variety before domestication(3) Horses contributed to the spread of culture by.A. carrying heavy loadsB. changing farming methodsC. serving as a means of transportD. advancing agriculture in different areas(4) The passage is mainly about.A. why humans domesticated horsesB. how humans and horses needed each otherC. why horses came in different shapes and sizesD. how human societies and horses influenced each other20、【来源】 2018年北京海淀区北方交通大学附属中学高三三模第67~70题8分2015年北京东城区高三一模(D篇)第20题It is easy to lose patience with science today. The questions are pressing: How dangerous is air pollution? What about low-level radiation? When will that horrible earthquake strike California? And why can't we predict weather better? But the evidence is often described as "uncertain" , forcing scientists to base their points of view almost as much on intuition(直觉) as on science. When historians and philosophers of science listen to these questions, some conclude that science may not be able to solve all these problems any time soon. The unknowns can grow into riddles that are impossible to solve. Because of the unstable and changing state of the earth's atmosphere, for example, scientists have struggled for centuries to predict the weather with precision(精确)but failed. The case is different for scientists of astronomy. For example, they think that the gravitational force of a nearby space vehicle, though tiny, is able to change the path of a much larger planer if the vehicle spends enough time close to it. With the aid of Newton's law of gravitational attraction, ground controllers can predict the path of a planetary probe(探测仪)—or satellite—with incredible accuracy. They do this by calculating the gravitational force from each of the passing planers until the probe speeds beyond the edge of the solar system. A much more difficult task is to calculate what happens when two or three times of such force pill on the probe at the same time. Such procedures can, of course, be very difficult, but for experiments, they are effective. This range of questions — from simple problems to those impossibly complex — has resulted in nicknames for various fields of study: "soft" sciences and "hard" sciences. "Soft" sciences admit a great degree of uncertainty. Academicians tend to judge fields such as sociology, psychology, and political science as "soft" because they are assumed to be understandable, of unnecessary mathematical accuracy, and concerned with everyday affairs such as interpersonal relationships. However, "hard" sciences, such as astronomy and chemistry, are said to offer precise answers. Precise definitions for "hard" sciences vary, but the characteristics of "hard" sciences include: producing testable predictions; performing controlled experiments; relying on quantifiable data and mathematical models; a high degree of accuracy and objectivity; and generally applying a pure form of the scientific method.(1) We can learn from the passage that.A. a large planer is able to change the size of a tiny planetB. ground controllers can affect the gravitational force of planetsC. calculating the probe speeds beyond the solar system is possibleD. predicting the weather is more difficult than predicting the path of a satellite(2) According to the author, "soft" sciences.A. allow for certain inaccuracyB. focus on personal relationshipsC. are based on controlled experimentsD. are rooted in data and mathematical models(3) What might be the best title for the passage?A. Science, a Long History?B. Science and Its FunctionsC. Science, Accurate or Not?D. Science and Its Application(4) What is the author's attitude towards science in this passage?A. Objective.B. In the following decades, technological advancement saw the adoption of magnetic strips, pin entry technology and most recently contactless payments. With the developments of the Internet and modern smart phone technology, online purchases and online banking have reduced the role of cash. While the reality of a cashless society is a long way from being realized, many remain unwilling to see the use of cash decline or even disappear.1No doubt this same unwillingness was apparent when coinage made the switch from precious metals to non-precious metals.2The most powerful driving force for advancement and innovation in payment is convenience, and there is no denying that a cashless society is certainly a convenient society.Merchants, companies and organisations spend lots of time and money keeping track of their cash. And it takes resources and money to move it around, including security services to keep it protected. However, things are quite different in a cashless society.3Moreover, there is no need for expensive physical protection. For the average consumer, a cashless society would equally have convenience benefits. There would be no need to carry around a huge amount of cash or change. People would never worry about how much they have on them or when they will next need to make a withdrawal. The advantages are even greater for travelling as there is no need to exchange cash or carry around lots of money.4For example, if a thief steals your wallet all the cash can be taken and spent with case. However, if the wallet only contains cards, they can be easily and quickly cancelled, leaving the thief empty handed—reducing the motivation for the crime in the first place.5However, how do we define a cashless society? Is it a society that prefers not to use any physical money?A. However, with change come benefits.B. This is often due to deeply-rooted familiarity and fondness of using cash.C. And it is important that people understand the advantages of cashless society.D. They think the overall burden of processing physical cash is surprisingly high.E. Another driving force is security, something a cashless society would help to promote.F. While card and digital transactions still require verification(核实), the process is much smoother.G. Without doubt, payment cards and electronic payment processing methods provide numerous advantages.五、书面表达22、【来源】 2018年北京海淀区北方交通大学附属中学高三三模第76题15分假设你是红星中学高三学生李华。

But one of them, surely, is to see your name in lights above bustling New York streets. A Chinese writer saw just an illumination in July when his name appeared on the big screen in Times Square. For Liu Zhenyun, it was a spectacular and fully-deserved promotion of his latest book, Laughter and Tears: A Novel.Liu, one of the best-selling authors of novels in contemporary China, has penned a number of popular works, including Someone to Talk To, Remembering 1942, and I Did Not Kill My Husband. His works have been translated into more than 28 languages, and Someone to Talk To was awarded the 2011 Mao Dun Literature Prize.“Laughter and Tears: A Novel can be worthily called another ‘high peak’ after Someone to Talk To,” Zhang Xudong, a professor of comparative literature and East Asian studies at New York University, says. The novel is based on the folklore of a legendary figure Hua Erniang, and describes the paintings of the narrator’s uncle, telling of the humor and life of people in Yanjin, Henan province, Liu’s hometown. In the book, everyone from Yanjin is humorous and can tell excellent jokes. Hua Erniang, the spirit of a widow waiting eternally for her husband, as in Yanjin folklore, will come into people’s dreams. In this state she will ask them to tell her a joke. If she thinks the joke is boring, she will instruct them to carry her to a place where she can drink spicy soup. But they die in the effort as she crushes them following her transformation into a mountain. However, if she likes the joke, she will give them a persimmon (柿子). As a result, people from Yanjin tell really good jokes.Corriere della Sera, an Italian newspaper, called Liu “the Kafka of Beijing”. In 2018, Liu was awarded France’s Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters. An author at Kirkus Reviews, a book review site in the United States, writes, “Liu has written a masterful tale that will make you laugh even as you despair”. Liu’s tragedies often have a feature of comedy and his comedies are also like tragedies. He tells many jokes and ridiculous stories in his books, and you will laugh when you read them. Researchers have used the findings to predict everything from thelikelihood that a couple will divorce to the chances of a work team having high customersatisfaction and productivity levels.More recent research helps explain why these brief exchanges matter so much. When youexperience negative emotions as a result of criticism or rejection, for example, your bodyproduces higher levels of the stress hormone, which shuts down much of your thinking andactivates(激活)conflict and defense mechanisms(机制). You assume that situations are worsethan they actually are. When you experience a positive interaction, it activates a very different response. Positiveexchanges increase your body's production of oxytocin, a feel-good that increases your ability tocommunicate with, cooperate with and trust others. But the effects of a positive occurrence areless dramatic and lasting than they are for a negative one.We need at least three to five positive interactions to outweigh every one negativeexchange. Bad moments simply outweigh good ones. Whether you're having a conversation, keep this simple short cut in mind:At least 80 percent of your conversations should be focusedon what's going right.Workplaces, for example, often see this. During performance reviews, managers routinelyspend 80 percent of their time on weaknesses and ―areas for improvement‖. They spendroughly 20 percent of the time on strengths and positive aspects. Any time you have discussionswith a person or group, spend the vast majority of the time talking about what is working, anduse the remaining time to address weaknesses.29. What will happen if you experience negative emotions?A. The situations are sure to become worse.B. Much of your thinking will be prevented.C. You will feel an urge to improve and become better.D. You'll be motivated to resolve conflicts with people.31. What can we infer from Paragraph 4?A. We need a positive feeling to beat one negative feeling.B. Positive interactions have greater effects than negative ones.C. Our conversation should center on what needs improvement.D. The effect of negative feelings lasts longer than that of positive ones.32. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?A. Ways to prevent negative thoughtsB. Positive interactions make the differenceC. Why negative thinking is unnecessaryD. How to promote workplace productivityDAverage humans can consume 15 or more drinks in plastic bottles a month. If you wereborn after 1978, and live until 80 years old, you will leave behind a minimum of 14, 400 plasticbottles on this planet. These bottles take hundreds of years to break down into tiny pieces ofplastic, never to completely disappear. Most of the waste is consumed by fish and birds, whichhas shortened their lifespan(寿命)greatly. The Plastic Bottle Village is just a great idea that might finally save us from being buried inplastic. It's a community in Panama that is going to be made of used bottles. The designprocess begins with building steel frames, which are then filled with these bottles. Once thisstep is complete, and electrical and plumbing(管道装置)lines are put inside, the plastic wallsare covered by concrete--both inside and outside. So no one will actually be able to tell that thewalls are made of plastic. Besides, the material will keep the house17℃cooler than theoutside, which is the biggest benefit to people living inside. The village is the brainchild(主意)of RobertBezeau with the intention of setting upseveral environmental projects. Having started a recycling program four years ago, duringwhich a number of plastic bottles were collected, he started to think of how they could be putto use. Soon enough, he decided to use them to build houses, and came up with a basic idea forthe construction process. The project hopes to make people conscious of the waste that these bottles create so thatthey can do more to protect the environment. The village will also create an education centerthat will teach individuals from the world how to reuse plastic bottles as construction materialsfor shelter. Recycled bottles could neutralize the negative effect of your passage on this planet, and move closer to leaving only your ―f ootprints‖.33. What do the figures in the first paragraph show?A.
