I had the meanest (最刻薄的) mother in the world. While other kids ate candy for breakfast, I
had to have cereal (谷类食物). But at least I wasn’t alone. My sister and two brothers had the same
mean mother as I did. But we all proud of being her children.
My mother knew where we were at all times. She knew who our friends were.
We had to wear clean clothes and take a bath every day. The other kids could wear the same
clothes for days.
We had to be in bed by 9:00 pm and get up at 7:00 am. We couldn’t sleep till noon like our
friends. So while they slept, our mother gave us work to do. We had to wash the dishes, make beds
and learn to cook. I was sure she stayed awake at night, thinking up mean things to do to us.
Through the years, things didn’t improve a bit. We could not lie in bed to pretend(假装) to be
“sick” like our friends did in order to miss school.
Because my mother was the meanest mother. All of us went on to higher education. None of us
have ever done bad things. She forced us to grow up into educated and honest people. Now all of us
have a good life. So I am trying to treat my children like this. I will feel proud when my children call
me the mean mother, because you see, I am so glad I had the meanest mother in the whole world.

Do you listen to the songs that your parents like? You probably think the music that they like is
old and dull but the songs you like are more popular and interesting.
But researchers at the University of Cambridge, the UK, collected data (资料) from more than
250,000 people over the past 10 years. They noticed that as people age, their social circumstances
(环境) change, and so does their music taste. There are three musical periods that people pass
through as they grow. The first period comes in the teenage years, during which time people like
rock because people regard themselves as independent individuals (个体).
But as people move into early adulthood, their lifestyle changes—they get to know more
people and want to build close relationships with others. As a result, they prefer pop which is often
played at parties.
When middle age comes, people like to listen to jazz and classical. They also like country and
folk, “During this period of life, many people often feel tired because of their work and family, and
there is a requirement for relaxing and emotive (动情的) music.” said Jason Smith, a research
member.
