A study has showed that the brain makes decisions about 10 se conds before a person realizes it.Experts involved in the study said that looking at brain activity w hile making a decision, they could predict the choices the subjects would make, before they realized that they had made a decision. Lead researcher J ohn-Dylan Haynes, a neuroscientist (神经学家)at the Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain S ciences in Leipzig, said that the new findings called into questio ns for “consciousness”of decisions that people make, and might even challenge ideas as to how“free”people are to make a deci sion at a particular moment.“We think our decisions are conscious, but these data show tha t consciousness is just the tip of the iceberg,”Nature magazine quoted (引用) him as saying. Thinking the results“quite dramatic”, Frank T ong of Vanderbilt University in , , said that 10 seconds is“a lifetime”in terms of brain activity.During the study, the brains of 14 volunteers were imaged as th ey performed a decision-making task. The subjects had two buttons before them, each t o be operated by a different hand, which they could press when they felt the urge to. They were sim ultaneously (同时地)shown a stream of letters, which appeared on a screen at ha lf-second intervals (间隔). The volunteers had to remember which letter was showing when they decided to press their button.Upon analysis of the data, the researchers realized that the earl iest signal they could catch started seven seconds before the v olunteers reported having made their decision. Given the delay of a few seconds in the imaging, they reckoned (估计) that the brain activity could have begun about ten seconds b efore the conscious decision. The researchers showed that the signals were picked up from a region (区域)called the frontopolar cortex (脑额极皮层),which is located at the front of the brain, immediately behind the forehead. While writing about the observations made during the research i n his study report, Haynes said that the frontopolar cormight be the brain region where decisions are started. He also showed that the next step in the research would be to speed up the data analysis so as to enable his team to predict people’s c hoices as their brains would make them.1. Wetake delight in the existence of creatures and even whole societ ies beyond our everyday lives. This sense of wonder is universal. Look at the efforts that scient ists have made to find out whether life of some kind exists on Mars, and the popularity of fantasy literature or movies like The L ord of the Rings. This sense of wonder draws us to each other, to the world around us, and to the world of make-believe. But have we gone so far in creating worlds of fantasy t hat we are missing the pleasure of other worlds that already exi st all around us?Human beings, as biologists have suggested, possess an inbor n desire to connect with and understand other life forms, Howev er, people, especially in big cities, often lead rather isolated live s. In a study of British schoolchildren, it was found that children by age eight were much more familiar with characters from tele vision shows and video games than with common wildlife. With out modern technology, a small pond could be an amazing worl d filled with strange and beautiful plants, insects, birds, and ani mals. When we lack meaningful interaction with the world aroun d us, and sometimes even with our families and friends, we see k to understand and communicate with things that exist only in our imaginations or on a computer screen. The world of make—believe is not necessarily bad. But when the world of fantasy be comes the only outlet for our sense of wonder, then we are reall y missing something. We are missing a connection with the livin g world. Other wonderful worlds exist all around us. But even more interesting is that if we look closely enough, we can see that these worlds, in a broad sense, are really part of our own.47.The popularity of The Lord of the Rings proves _____.A. the close connection between man and the fantasy worldB. the wonderful achievements of fantasy literatureC. the fine taste of moviegoers around the worldD. the general existence of the sense of curiosity48.What can we infer from the underlined sentence in Paragraph 3?A. These small dog-like animals have long been accused of killing farm animals. Th ey are officially classified as harmful and farmers try to keep their numbers down by shooting or poisoning them.Farmers can also call on the services of their local hunt to control the fox population. Hunting consists of pursuing a fox across the countryside, with a group of specially trained dogs, followed by men and women r iding horses. When the dogs eventually catch the fox they kill it or a hunter shoots it.People who take part in hunting think of it as a sport; they wear a special uniform of red coats and white trousers, and follow strict codes of behavior. But owning a horse and hunting re gularly is expensive, so most hunters are wealthy. It is estimated that up to 100,000 people watch or take part in fo x hunting. But over the last couple of decades the number of pe ople opposed to fox hunting, because they think it is cruel, has r isen sharply. Nowadays it is rare for a hunt to pass off without s ome kind of conflict between hunters and hunt saboteurs (阻拦者). Sometimes these incidents lead to violence, but mostly sab oteurs interfere (干涉) with the hunt by misleading riders and disturbing the trail of t he fox’s smell, which the dogs follow.Noisy conflicts between hunters and saboteurs have become s o common that they are almost as much a part of hunting as th e pursuit of foxes itself. But this year supporters of fox hunting face a much bigger threat to their sport. There was a woman who lived there, whom I had never met, yet I could see her seated by her window each afternoon, sewing or reading. After several months had gone by, I began to notice that her window was dirty. Everything was unclear through the dirty window .I would say to myself, “I wonder why that woman doesn’t wash her window .It really looks terrible.”One bright morning I decided to clean my flat, including washing the window on the inside.Late in the afternoon when I finished the cleaning, I sat down by the window with a cup of coffee for a rest. What a surprise! Across the way, the woman sitting by her window was clearly visible. Her window was clean! Then it dawned on me. I had been criticizing(批评) her dirty window, but all the time I was watching hers through my own dirty window. That was quite an important lesson for me. How often had I looked at and criticized others through the dirty window of my heart, through my own shortcomings?Since then, whenever I wanted to judge(评判) someone, I asked myself first ,“Am I looking at him through my own dirty window?” Then I try to clean the window of my own world so that I may see the world about me more clearly.1. Hopefully readers will also have an opportunity to enjoy the movie the way I have halfway around the globe!Slum-dog Millionaire is about a poor boy from the slums (贫民窟), Jamal, who ends up winning the grand prize in an Indian show “Who Wants to be a Millionaire”. The night before he answers theprize-winning question, Jamal is captured by the police and tortured (拷打). They don’t believe a slumdog like Jamal could answer seven questions correctly and possibly win 20 million rupees (卢比)! But, as the movie unfolds, Jamal reveals (透露) how he found the answers to each of the questions. Viewers also learn about Jamal’s c hildhood, his selfish older brother Salim, and his childhood lover, Latika. The movie’s point, however, is not just to tell a typical story of the underdog (弱者) who becomes a hero. The director also uses Slum-Dog Millionaire to give viewers a taste of India. The movie begins in Jamal’s childhood home in the slums of India. The place where he and his family lived reminds one of the hutongs that used to make up a large part of Old Beijing. Jamal and his brother grow and travel across India, meanwhile surviving as slum-dogs and cheaters, and India ages with them. By the time Jamal is 17 or 18, his old home has been replaced by a giant skyscraper (摩天大楼) financial center. Jamal and Salim take a moment to reminisce (回忆) about their old lives, as they stand high up in a skyscraper that is still under construction. The view from above reminded me of a similar view I had just two years ago in China: I was standing there in the living room of a family friend’s modern apartment, looking out through a window down to the shacks (简陋的房屋) below just next to the building complex. It was amazing how affluence and poverty could live so close together. So, what was most appealing about the movie to me and my Indian friends was how we could relate to the scenarios (情节) presented in the movie. More important than the plot was the window onto the social and economic situations in Asia that it provided.By Jennifer, 16, New Jersey, US1. Which of the following is TRUE about the movie?A. Jamal finally won a big prize after struggling hard to earn an honest living.B. Suspected of cheating, Jamal was arrested by the police before winning the prize.C. Jamal and his brother recalled their past standing where it usedto be their home.D. Jamal remained in his childhood home in the slums before he was 17 or 18.2. Viewers can learn from the movie EXCEPT__________.A. Jamal’s childhood and his bitter experience of wandering across the country.B. The rapid social changes and economic development in India.C. The poor life of people in the slums against the prosperity of cities in Asia.D. The secret of becoming a millionaire through personal struggle. 3.Why does the movie appeal to the writer?A. It’s a typical story of the underdog who becomes a hero, which the writer admires most.B. It’s an Oscar-nominated movie that helps the writer understand the nature of human.C. It has an exciting and complicated plot that attracts the writer very muchD. It reminds the writer of her experience in China and helps her know about Asian countries.4. What can we infer from the reading passage?A. The writer is now studying in a school in China.B. The movie will win the Oscar because of the social problems presented in it.C. The writer is surprised at the gap between the rich and poor in developing countries.D. The movie is only welcomed by Americans who have Indian friends.5. What is the main purpose of writing the passage?A. To introduce a movie to readers and share her views about it.B. To persuade more viewers to go to the cinema to see the movie.C. To express the writer’s enthusiasm towards Asia and its culture.D. To reveal the true social reality in the developing countries.参考答案 1---5 B D D C A*******************************************************结束(C)People know the dangers of fires. I was especially excited of the invitation that my uncle had given me to stay with him for a few days in Cambridge.I was prepared for the subject, physics. While it may be common for university researchers to try their luck in the commercial world, there is very little traffic in the opposite direction. Pay has always been the biggest deterrent, as people with families often feel they cannot afford the drop in salary when moving to a university job. For some industrial scientists, however, the attractions of academia (学术界) outweigh any financial considerations.Helen Lee took a 70% cut in salary when she moved from a senior post in Abbott Laboratories to a medical department at the University of Cambridge. Her main reason for returning to academia mid-career was to take advantage of the greater freedom to choose research questions. Some areas of inquiry have few prospects of a commercial return, and Lee’s is one of them. The impact of a salary cut is probably less severe for a scientist in the early stages of a career. Guy Grant, now a research associate at the Unilever Centre for Molecular Informatics at the University of Cambridge, spent two years working for a pharmaceutical (制药的) company before returning to university as a post-doctoral researcher. He took a 30% salary cut but felt it worthwhile for the greater intellectual opportunities.Higher up the ladder, where a pay cut is usually more significant, the demand for scientists with a wealth of experience in industry is forcing universities to make the transition (转换) to academia more attractive, according to Lee. Industrial scientists tend to receive training that academics do not, such as how to build a multidisciplinary team, manage budgets and negotiate contracts. They are also well placed to bring something extra to the teaching side of an academic role that will help students get a job when they graduate, says Lee, perhaps experience in manufacturing practice or product development. “Only a small number of undergraduates will continue in an academic career. So someone leaving university who already has the skills needed to work in an industrial lab has far more potential in the job market than someone who has spent all their time on a narrow researchproject.”12. By “a one-way street” (Line 1, Para. 1), the author means ________.A .university researchers know little about the commercial worldB. there is little exchange between industry and academiaC. few industrial scientists would quit to work in a universityD. few university professors are willing to do industrial research13. What was Helen Lee’s major conside ration when she changed her job in the middle of hercareer?A. Flexible work hours.B. Her research interests.C .Her preference for the lifestyle on campus. D. Prospects of academic accomplishments.14. Guy Grant chose to work as a researcher at Cambridge in order to ________.A. do financially more rewarding workB. raise his status in the academic worldC. enrich his experience in medical researchD. exploit better intellectual opportunities15. What contribution can industrial scientists make when they come to teach in a university?A. Increase its graduates’ competitiveness in the job market.B. Develop its students’ potential in research.C. We spoke Tuesday with Jonathan Links, an expert in radiation health sciences. He is a professor at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Maryland.Professor Links says workers within the nuclear plant are the only people at risk of extremely high doses of radiation.JONATHAN LINKS: "Of course, we don't know what doses they've received, but the only persons at risk of acute radiation effects are the workers."For other people, he says, there may be a long-term worry. People can get cancer from low doses of ionizing radiation, the kind released in a nuclear accident.Professor Links says scientists can use computers to quickly model where radioactive material has blown and settled. Then they measure how large an area is contaminated. He says if the situation is serious enough, officials could take steps like telling people not to eat locally grown food or drink the water.JONATHAN LINKS: "But that would only be the case if there was a significant release and, because of wind direction, the radioactive material was blown over the area, and then settled out of the air into and onto water, plants, fruits and vegetables."The reactors at Fukushima are on the Pacific coast. But Professor Links says people should not worry about any radioactive material leaking into the ocean.JONATHAN LINKS: "Even in a worst-case scenario accident, the sea provides a very high degree of dilution. So the concentration of radioactivity in the seawater would still be quite low."Japan is the only country to have had atomic bombs dropped on it. That memory from World War Two would create a stronger "psychological sensitivity" to radiation exposure, Professors Links says.Next month is the twenty-fifth anniversary of the explosion and fire that destroyed a reactor at Chernobyl in Ukraine. The nineteen eighty-six event was the world's worst accident in the nuclear power industry.A new United Nations report says more than six thousand cases of thyroid cancer have been found. These are in people who were children in affected areas of Belarus, Russia and Ukraine. The report says that by two thousand five the cancers had resulted in fifteen deaths. The cancers were largely caused by drinking contaminated milk. Ever since they were first put on the market in the early 1990s, genetically modified (GM, 转基因) foods have been increasingly developed and marketed in many countries in the world, mainly on the basis of their promise to end the worldwide food crisis. But can GM technology solve world hunger problems? Even if it would,is it the best solution?Despite what it promises,GM technology actually has not increased the production potential(潜力)of any crop. In fact studies show that the most widely grown GM crop, GM soybeans, has suffered reduced productivity. For instance, a report that analysed nearly two decades of research on major GM food crops shows that GM engineering has failed to significantly increase US crop production.Something else, however, has been on the rise. While GM seeds are expensive, GM companies tell farmers that they will make good profits by saving money on pesticides(杀虫剂). On the contrary, US government data show that GM crops in the US have produced an overall increase in pesticide use compared to traditional crops. “The promise was that you could use less chemicals and boost production. But neither is true,” said Bill Christison, President of the US National Family Farm Coalition. At the same time, the authors of the book World Hunger: Twelve Myths argue that there actually is more than enough food in the world and that the hunger crisis is not caused by production, but by problems in food distribution and politics. These indeed deserve our efforts and money. Meanwhile, the rise in food prices results from the increased use of crops for fuel rather than food, according to a 2008 World Bank report. As a matter of fact, scientists see better ways to feed the world. Another World Bank report concluded that GM crops have little to offer to the challenges of worldwide poverty and hunger, because better ways out are available, among which “green” farming is supposed to be the first choice.主要讲转基因技术并不是解决世界饥饿问题最好的方式。

]CKirk Watson, then Austin‟s mayor, remembers it this way:“I was at the gym working out and going back and forth between different machines, doing different things. I was on a treadmill(踏车), my head down and a guy on another treadmill cried out, …Mayor, is that the World Trade Center?‟ ”Moments later, Watson was in another part of the gym, away from televisions. “Another guy said another one hit.” he recalled.Watson, now a state senator, recalls every detail, every emotion of Sept. 11, 2001.“I will never forget the feeling of watching the towers fall,” he said, recalling going into mayor mode when it became clear our nation was under attack. You, too, remember the details, the emotions of 9/11. Five weeks from today, on the 10th anniversary of that awful day, we will provide a forum for Central Texans to share their memories. At times, the memories are so vivid, it seems impossible it was so long ago. And there are times the memories are so horrific that it can be hard to comprehend that such a thing actually happened. For many of us, the 9/11 attacks on our homeland are the equivalent(等同) of what the attack on Pearl Harbor was for Americans on Dec. 7, 1941. The events were comparable, but the outcome was different. Does it seem to you America was in a better place 10 ye ars after Pearl Harbor than we are 10 years after 9/11? We remain at war on two fronts. Our nation‟s economy is shrinking. Too many Americans are unemployed. We face challenges so deep that some Americans —inheritors(继承人) of a national spirit long marked by eternal optimism about a boundless future —are thinking about whether our best days are behind us.“Sept. 11, 2001 was our day that will live in evil,” Watson said. “We need to make sure our children and grandchil dren will say we reacted to our day that lived in evil at least as well as that generation that came before us reacted to Pearl Ha rbor.”Have we done that? We‟d like to share your thoughts in a project planned for these pages on Sunday, Sept. 11. Are your memories consumed by the horror of the sights of that day? And, like Watson, do the emotions of the day still burn within you?63.When America was under attack on Sept 11, 2001, Kirk Watson was________.A.in the office having a talk with his staffB.receiving a phone call from his colleagueC.in the stadium watching TVD.at the gym taking exercise64.It can be learnt from the passage that ten years after Sept 11, 2001, ________ .A.America is in a better place than they were 10 years after Pearl HarborB.America‟s economy is picking upC.Americans are worried about their futureD.many Americans are living a happy life65.The author‟s purpose in writing the passage is to ________ .A.hope the readers will talk about how they feel about the 9/11 attacksB.expect the victims of the 9/11 attacks will be tolerantC.call on all Americans to uniteD.encourage American young people to fight against terrorists66.What can be the best title for the passage?A.Great Pain Disappears SlowlyB.Ten Years Later, Memory Still BurnsC.Ten Years Ago, the 9/11 Attacks Occurred UnexpectedlyD.The 9/11 Attacks, Forgettable or Forgivable【参考答案】63—66、DCAB[史地自然型阅读理解]----- (三)Besides containing attractive flowers, trees and other plants that beautify the community, ecofriendly rain gardens(雨水花园) are healthy for the environment and the people living and working nearby.A rain garden is not very different from a traditional garden. It is just a far more ecofriendly garden. Usually it is built lower than the ground. Rain gardens make smart use of rain and storm water by temporarily holding water from rain and storms and letting it soak(浸入)slowly into the ground before it runs into streams or enters the public drinking water supply. Thus, a rain garden keeps the water, allowing it to be used as needed by plants in the rain garden, rather than flowing immediately into nearby streams and going unused. The water will soak slowly into the ground within a day or two. This creates an advantage that the rain garden does not allow mosquitoes to breed. This is a simple, attractive, and eco friendly “green” way to treat storm water. What's more, planting a rain garden helps reduce pollution and improve the environment. Without using expensive machinery and chemicals, rain gardens remove harmful chemicals in the rainwater and cut down on the amount of pollution reaching streams and rivers by up to 30%.Native plants are recommended for rain gardens because they are more used to the local climate, soil, and water conditions. They may attract local wildlife such as native birds. Water your rain garden immediately after planting and once a week, unless you have had at least an inch of rain during the week. Once the native plants establish the necessary root system, it will require little care.Often, local governments and private businesses develop large rain gardens in their yards and in publicparks as a way to improve the environment and solve flooding problems. However, you don't need to be a professional environmental engineer to create a rain garden. As long as you're ecoconscious homeowners, you can help the environment by building smaller rain gardens in your yards.1.Which of the following is NOT true for the function of rain gardens?A. They are good for living conditions.B. They increase pollution.C. They can beautify the community.D. They improve the environment.2.Which of the following is the ecofriendly function of rain gardens discussed in Paragraph 4?A. They can keep the rain and storm water.B. They can help reduce the pollution problem.C. They can be healthy for the people around.D. They can make the environment more beautiful.3.One of the main reasons why native plants are recommended is that ____.A. they cost less and are much easier to getB. they may attract local wildlife to comeC. they require little care from the local gardenerD. they are more used to the local growing conditions4.What do we know about rain gardens?A. They need little water after all the plants are planted.B. They usually need at least an inch of rainwater a week.C.They may attract local birds and change the local climate.D. They may reduce the water pollution problem by 70%.5. Who are the intended readers of the passage?A. Homeowners.B. Students.C. Engineers.D. Educators.(三)【要点综述】本文主要介绍了环境友好型的雨水花园是如何运作的。
