英语真题阅读理解试题及名师解析(18)It is said that in England death is pressing, in Canada inevitable and in California optional .Small wonder. Americans’life expectancy has nearly doubled over the past century. Failing hips can be replaced, clinical depression controlled, cataracts removed in a 30-minute surgical procedure. Such advances offer the aging population a quality of life that was unimaginable when I entered medicine 50 years ago. But not even a great health-care system can cure death—and our failure to confront that reality now threatens this greatness of ours.Death is normal; we are genetically programmed to disintegrate and perish, even under ideal conditions. We all understand that at some level, yet as medical consumers we treat death as a problem to be solved. Shielded by third-party payers from the cost of our care, we demand everything that can possibly be done for us, even if it's useless. The most obvious example is late-stage cancer care. Physicians—frustrated by their inability to cure the disease and fearing loss of hope in the patient—too often offer aggressive treatment far beyond what is scientifically justified. In 1950, the U.S. spent $12.7 billion on health care. In 2002, the cost will be $1,540 billion. Anyone can see this trend is unsustainable. Yet few seem willing to try to reverse it. Some scholars conclude that a government with finite resources should simply stop paying for medical care that sustains life beyond a certain age—say 83 or so. Former Colorado governor Richard Lamm has been quoted as saying that the old and infirm “have a duty to die and get out of the way ” so that younger, healthier people can realize their potential.I would not go that far. Energetic people now routinely work through their 60s and beyond, and remain dazzlingly productive. At 78, Viacom chairman Sumner Redstone jokingly claims tobe 53. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor is in her 70s, and former surgeon general C. Everett Koop chairs an Internet start-up in his 80s.These leaders are living proof that prevention works and that we can manage the health problems that come naturally with age. As a mere 68-year-old, I wish to age as productively as they have.Yet there are limits to what a society can spend in this pursuit. Ask a physician, I know the most costly and dramatic measures may be ineffective and painful. I also know that people in Japan and Sweden, countries that spend far less on medical care, have achieved longer, healthier lives than we have. As a nation, we may be overfunding the quest for unlikely cures while underfunding research on humbler therapies that could improve people's lives.36. What is implied in the first sentence?[A] Americans are better prepared for death than other people.[B] Americans enjoy a higher life quality than ever before.[C] Americans are over-confident of their medical technology.[D] Americans take a vain pride in their long life expectancy.37. The author uses the example of cancer patients to show that[A] medical resources are often wasted.[B] doctors are helpless against fatal diseases.[C] some treatments are too aggressive.[D] medical costs are becoming unaffordable.38. The author's attitude to ward Richard Lamm's remark is one of[A] strong disapproval.[B] reserved consent.[C] slight contempt.[D] enthusiastic support.39. In contras to the U.S. ,Japan and Sweden are funding their medical care[A] more flexibly.[B] more extravagantly.[C] more cautiously.[D] more reasonably.40. The text intends to express the idea that[A] medicine will further prolong people's lives.[B] life beyond a certain limit is not worth living.[C] death should be accepted as a fact of life.[D] excessive demands increase the cost of health care.名师解析36. What is implied in the first sentence? 第一句话暗示什么?[A] Americans are better prepared for death than other people.美国人对于死亡的准备超过其他人。

These days, I walk down the steps leading toward the south end of the All England Club in Wimbledon, and still look for the Crow's Nest, a small green observation tower with an outer ladder that I used to climb on for a wide view of the grounds, but which has since been knocked down. The Crow's Nest was a particularly useful point, because it allowed a tennis writer to keep track of the action on as many as 10 outside courts at a time. At days end, reporters from different nations would share notes on what they had observed all over the grounds.Twenty-seven years later, the press room has touch screens that allow us to watch live videos from any court, and even go back to watch key moments in key matches long after they have finished. You could cover Wimbledon without leaving your seat. But that is a bit like spending all your time ordering room service and looking up fun facts on Wikipedia.More than at any other tennis tournament, there is also an appetite for stories that deal with the setting, the history and the traditions. If they change the price of the fish tacos (鱼肉卷饼) at the United States Open, it's not a story. If they change the price of the strawberries and cream, the signature treat at Wimbledon. It's time to email your editor using capital letters. The new retractable (可伸缩的) roof was put in place in 2009.Until then, you always had to have a rainy-day story in your notebook because there were no guarantees any matches would be played. Now tennis is a sure thing on Centre Court, which has made tennis reporters a bit less creative. But at least it guarantees us daily access to the most atmospheric place in the sport. So much has changed, but Centre Court remains true to its original spirit: more a theater than a stadium. Catching that feeling is part of covering Wimbledon, too.(1)What did the author do on the Crow's Nest in the past?A. He made friends with reporters.B. He reported on tennis matches.C. He appreciated the beautiful scenery.D. He exchanged experiences with tennis players.(2)What does the author think of the new way of covering Wimbledon?A. It lacks fun.B. It is expensiveC. It is not convenient.D. It is not quick enough (3)Why does the author mention strawberries and cream?A. To compare popular foods.B. To introduce the typical treat at Wimbledon.C. To describe people's craze for traditional dishes.D. To show the traditions of Wimbledon are an attraction.(4)What difference does the new roof make?A. Audiences have easier access to a tennis court.B. There's less fun in watching Wimbledon indoors.C. Reporters are struggling to find original material.D. rainy-day stories about Wimbledon have become history.【答案】(1)B(2)A(3)D(4)D【解析】【分析】本文是一篇记叙文。

Today is National Bike-to-Work Day. And on New YorkCity's jammed streets, people are cycling on hundreds of miles of new bike lanes. But New York's widespread efforts to make streets safer for bikes have also left some locals complaining about the loss of parking spots and lanes for cars. When the weather is good, Aaron Naparstek likes to pedal(用踏板踩)his two young kids to school on a special Dutch-made bicycle. Naparstek supports the new lane.Aaron: The bike lane on Prospect Park West is really introducing a lot of new people to the idea that it's possible to use a bike in New York City for transportation or to travel around. This is what 21st century New York City looks like.Prospect Park West is still a one-way road, but where it used to have three lanes of car traffic, now it has two, plus a protected bike lane. Supporters say that makes the road safer for everyone, including pedestrians, by slowing down cars and taking bikes off thesidewalk. But some longtime residents disagree. Lois Carswell is president of a group called Seniors for Safety. She says the two-way bike lane is dangerous to older residents who are used to one-way traffic.Lois: We wanted a lane — the right kind of lane that would keep everybody safe, that would keep the bikers safe. But we want it to be done the right way. And it has not been done the right way.Craig Palmer builds bars and restaurants in Manhattan. I was interviewing him for a different story when he brought up the bike lanes all on his own.Craig: I think the biggest problem is that Bloomberg put all these bike lanes in. You took what used to be a full street and you're shrinking it.Then there are the Hasidic Jews in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, who forced the city to remove a bike lane through their neighborhood. But polls show that the majority of New Yorkers support bike lanes by a margin of 56% to 39%. Bicycle advocate Caroline Samponaro of Transportation Alternatives calls that a mandate.Caroline: If this was an election, we would have already had our victory. The public has spoken and they keep speaking. And I think, more importantly, the public is starting to vote with their pedals.(1)What does Aaron mean by saying “This is what 21st century New York City looks like.”?A.There are hundreds of miles of new bike lanes in 21 st century New York City.B.Drivers slow down their cars and bikes are taken off the sidewalk in New York.C.It's possible to make the streets safe for pedestrians in New York.D.Bikes are used as a means of transport in 21 st century New York City. (3)“A mandate” in Paragraph 8 was referred to a demand or command from ________.A.the authorityB.the governmentC.the supportersD.the public(4)Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?A.Ride on National Bike-to-Work DayB.A Bike Lane Divides New YorkersC.A New Bike Lane Appears in New YorkD.Who Wins an Election。

2015年高考英语阅读理解练习:NationalThe basic flag of the United States is one of the world’s oldest national flags. Only the basic flags of Austria, Denmark, Great Britain, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Switzerland are older.During the discovery and settlement of what is now the United States, the flags of various European nations were flown over the land, as symbols of possession. Later, in the Colonial and Revolutionary War periods, flags representing famous persons, places, and events were flown in the American Colonies. The first official flag of the United States was created by Congress on June 14,1777, It consisted of 13 alternate red an white stripes and 13 white stars in a field of blue, representingthe 13 colonies that had declared their independence in 1776. Congress adopted a new flag of 15 stars and 15 stripes in 1795to give representation to the two new states admitted into the Union, Vermont and Kentucky.By 1817, there were 20 states in the Union, and it became apparent that adding one stripe for each new state would destroy the shape of the flag. As a result, Congress in 1818 restored theoriginal design of 13 stripes and provided that each state was tobe represented by one star. In 1912 President William H. Taft made the first official provision for the arrangement of the stars. He ordered that there be six even rows of eight stars each.

If fire didnt hurt when it burned, children would play with it until their hands were burned away. Similarly, if pain existed but fear didnt, a child could burn itself again and again because fear would not warn it to keep away from the fire that had burnt it before. A really fearless soldier—and some do exist—is not a good soldier because he is soon killed; and a dead soldier is of no use to his army. Fear and pain are therefore two guards without which man and animals might soon die out.In our first sentence we suggested that fear ought to be properly used. If, for example, you never go out of your house because of the danger of being knocked down and killed in the street by a car, you are letting fear rule you too much. The important thing is not to let fear rule you, butinstead, to use fear as your servant and guide. Fear will warn you of dangers; then you have to decide what action to take.In many cases, you can take quick and successful action to avoid the danger. For example, you see a car coming straight towards you; fear warns you, you jump out of the way, and all is well.In some cases, however, you decide that there is nothing that you can do to avoid the danger. For example, you cannot prevent an airplane crashing into your house, and you may not want to go and live in a desert where there are no airplanes. In this case, fear has given you its warning, you have examined it and decided on your course of action, so fear of the particular danger is no longer of any use to you, and you have to try to overcome it.60. Children would play with fire until their hands are burnt away if _________.A. they were not well educated at schoolB. they had never played with fire beforeC. they had no sense of painD. they were fearful of pain61. 英语阅读理解习题:National
The basic flag of the United States is one of the world‘s oldest national flags. Only the basic flags of Austria, Denmark, Great Britain, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Switzerland are older.
During the discovery and settlement of what is now the United States, the flags of various European nations were flown over the land, as symbols of possession. Later, in the Colonial and Revolutionary War periods, flags representing famous persons, places, and events were flown in the American Colonies.
The first official flag of the United States was created by Congress on June 14,1777, It consisted of 13 alternate red an white stripes and 13 white stars in a field of blue, representing the 13 colonies that had declared their independence in 1776. Congress adopted a new flag of 15 stars and 15 stripes in 1795 to give representation to the two new states admitted into the Union, Vermont and Kentucky.
By 1817, there were 20 states in the Union, and it became
apparent that adding one stripe for each new state would destroy the shape of the flag. As a result, Congress in 1818 restored the
original design of 13 stripes and provided that each state was to be represented by one star. In 1912 President William H. Taft made the first official provision for the arrangement of the stars. He ordered that there be six even rows of eight stars each. Previously the arrangement of the stars had been left to the flag-maker‘s fancy.
The evolution of the Stars and Stripes reflects the growth of the United States. After the admission of Hawaii into the Union in 1959, the flag was officially changed for the 26th times since its creation. There are many government flags flown in the United States in
addition to the
national flag. Among them are the president‘s and vice-
president‘s flags and those of the federal departments and some。
