The brothers were tired of searching for replacements when their cooks and waitresses quit. They were tired of replacing broken dishes and glassware and lost silverware. Before abandoning their successful business, however, they decided to try a new system of preparing and serving food.Their remodelled restaurant contrasted with the original. It served just hamburgers, cheeseburgers, French fries, and drinks. Paper wrappers and paper cups replaced the dishes and glassware. Silverware wasn't needed because the restaurant didn't serve any food that required a knife, fork, or spoon to eat. Gone also were the professional cooks. Instead, food preparation was divided among several workers, each with a specific task. One worker grilled the hamburgers; another wrapped them in paper; a third cooked French fries; and another poured drinks. There were no waitresses. Customers ordered and paid at the counter then carried their own food to a table. This new system was like a factory assembly line. Increasing the speed of food preparation increased the kitchen's output and lowered its costs. The system revolutionized the restaurant business and introduced the term "fast food."Carl Karcher heard that a nearby restaurant was selling cheap, albeit top-grade hamburgers for 15 cents. He was charging 35 cents for burgers in his own restaurant. When he visited the McDonald's restaurant, he was astonished to see dozens of customers waiting in line to buy burgers while the assembly-line kitchen staff quickly and efficiently prepared their food. He liked the new system. In 1956 Karcher opened his own fast-food restaurant and named it Carl's Jr.Around this time, Ray Kroc, a salesman who sold milkshake machines to restaurants, also visited the new McDonald's restaurant. Kroc was impressed by its food preparation and service system. He convinced the McDonald brothers to sell him the rights to build McDonald's restaurants across the U.S. By 1960, Kroc had opened 250 of them. A decade later, there were nearly 3,000 McDonald's franchises across the U.S.The fast food industry grew because it was born at the right time. In the 1950S, the economy of the U.S. was expanding, and people were inclined to be optimistic and ambitious. This was a generation that was willing to risk starting a business and to work hard to make it successful. They also trusted technology and acknowledged that machines could work as efficiently as individuals. Meanwhile, the auto mobile was growing in popularity, and this was, by far, the most important factor that led to the enormous growth of the fast-food industry.New technology had made automobiles dependable and easy to drive. They were alsoaffordable in the growing economy. People wanted to go places, and a national highway system, expanded during the 1950S, enabled US families to drive long distances. They needed gas stations where they could refuel their vehicles and restaurants where they could eat. In time, hundreds of new gas stations were built along the highways, complemented by new fast-food restaurants where hungry travelers could get a quick meal. The McDonald's model was widely copied in these restaurants, often by inexperienced owners who wanted a fast route to success. Some of the new restaurants failed, but many succeeded. Some even expanded into nationwide and worldwide chains. Among the contemporary start-ups of the 1950S and 1960s were Taco Bell, Burger King, Wendy's, Domino's Pizza, Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC), and Jack in the Box.The amazing success of fast-food chains soon inspired other kinds of retail businesses to form national and international chains of stores. Although many people reject the idea of globalization, business chains are rapidly overlapping national borders and spreading around the world.

1. Some people think cultural heritage should be used to attract tourists and promote tourism while others think that would damage cultural heritage. Discuss.首段:Recent decades witnessed (见证) the development of cultural heritage into tourist programs over the world, but the development has caused some discussion (讨论). I believe that the cultural tourism should be supported generally. (considering考虑到the benefits for countries and tourists)中间段1:There are some advantages to developing cultural travel industry. First, tourists and local citizens can widen their horizon (扩展视野) by visiting (拜访) cultural sites, while the traditional cultures can be better understood and appreciated by a wider range of world citizens and so flourish. (繁荣,发扬光大) moreover, the incomes from the businesses of traveling can be used to further (进一步) protect cultural relics. 2:On the other hand, there are some opposing (反对) views on the practice (做法). Some people might argue that some travelers’actions inevitably(不可避免)/ admittedly(不得不承认地) can cause damage to the local environment and negative effects on the protection of cultural heritage. They may also claim that only the huge numbers of tourists can make up a burden on the task(任务work) of preserving(保护) cultural relics.尾段:therefore, the development can be more advantageous than damaging, as long as sufficient work is done to protect the local environment and cultural heritage. For instance, legislation(立法) can punish(惩罚) those who violate the environment laws while the number of visitors to some special sites can be limited mandatorily. (强制性)可套题目:(只要是现象题,好坏,都可以适用)Fashion/international trade/ fast food/ study abroad通用思路Advantages: consumers; economy—relevant businesses—insurance保险transportation, advertising, production, intermediate services providers (中介)—job opportunities—good circulation of economy.Disadvantage: luxury; shocks on the development of local businesses; concern on the loss of talents or the loss of domestic fundsSolutions: most consumers are not stupid and tend to make reasonable consumption. (当地打击:competition cannot be ignored, which can force the local businesses to improve their product quality and services and finally provide sufficiently competitive products or services to compare with the foreign brands.) (The governments of those developing or under-developed countries can create better policies favorable to those students studying abroad and encourage good talents to come back.)Companies focus on the academic qualifications资格证but pay less attention to experience. Positive?Advantage: companies—such graduates tend to have certain professional abilities and creativity or studying ability, which are supposed to necessary for corporate development. Students can take the practice as a motivation (动力) (driving force) to work hard, while graduates can take that as a reward (回报repayment) to their time, efforts and money for the qualifications.Diploma文凭(毕业证), degree 文凭(学位证), certificate证书(专业类或通用类考试取得, 4,6级)Disadvantage:companies may suffer from those talents without enough practical abilities, while those candidates with strong practical abilities but poor qualifications may feel the practice unfair. (不公平)Solution: companies can further select talents by taking interviews, training and internships(实习) as well as set up exceptions (例外) for those talents with strong abilities and good personalities but poor qualifications, especially considering some very important positions.练习Many city governments are separating分离the cities into different areas, namely, commercial areas商业区, schools and universities, work places and factories. Do you believe the trend positive?首段:crowded拥挤;measure措施solutions解决;好处:be kept far from pollution, high levels of noise and temptations. (competition—development/ consumer convenient and more choices, superior services and reasonable prices)坏处: those who live far away from their shopping places or working places may feel the practice not good for their life and work.Solution: improve traffic system; apartment; nearby small scale shops to provide convenient way of shopping for citizens or students2. Some think humans can exploit animals for any purpose that they need, while others disagree. What is your opinion?改写:动物园zoos are cruel, so we should remove them. Do you agree? 动物实验wild life should be protected, and animal experiments should be banned. Do you agree?核心内容:how to use animals and protect animals reasonably? I cannot agree with this view completely.利用动物的支持观点:there are arguments in favor of the use of animals by humans. First, humans have to use animals for their own subsistence or better living conditions, for example, raising pigs for pork, chicks for eggs and sheep for furs. Moreover, lab animals can be used to bring us technological breakthroughs, especially in terms of medicines and space trips. Finally, sometime the use of animals can be advantageous to both humans and the animals. For instance, zoos are places where citizens can have funs while animals get free lunches and necessary protection, especially for those species whose natural habitats have disappeared or been damaged.反对利用动物观点:on the other hand, there are views supporting the banning of animal use. First, some people think the use is cruel, especially according to those animal rights protectionists who believe animals should have equal rights as men do. In addition, the abuse of animals, especially the wild animals or even those at the edge/brink边缘of extinction灭绝, can cause the damage to ecological balance and threaten the subsistence of humans themselves. Last but not the least, sometimes the improper use of animals can immediately cause epidemics.总结:we should use those animals which have strong reproduction abilities orare human raised, for example, pigs and lab rats. However, wild animals, especially those at the brink of extinction should be protected by taking some measures such as legislation, establishing/setting up建立natural reserves自然保护区and helping animals reproduce artificially人工地(by man efforts).9 The range of technology available for individuals will increase the gap of rich and poor. To what extent do you agree or disagree? I cannot agree with the view completely.Proponents: 1. immediately; 2. frequently频繁的choose to use the technologyOpponents:1. indirectly; 2. technological products are increasingly popular, with the development and the cost reduction. Conclusion: whether the technology, …, can bring benefits to more people depends on how it is used, but generally the development can bring benefits to all humans and the society.建议练习:the development of airplanes can only bring benefits to the rich people. Do you agree?教育类4. University students should only study one specialist(专业的)subject. Others think the universities should encourage(鼓励)the students to learn a range of subjects in addition to a specialist area. 1. students’ interests and personalities2. the requirement of specific courses3. the demands of society本题提纲手段:recently, there is a discussion about what subjects students should betaught. One view believes that … while the other side insists that …. I tend to agree with the latter view.中间1:Surely, to study one specialist subject is necessary for any student, mainly because the study of professional knowledge and skills is very important for students’future jobs. Moreover, some students like to study a small range of subjects and become top researchers, especially in the fields of top technology studies. However, it is unlikely or improper (不恰当) to only study one specialist subject, considering the development of individuals and the demands of society.中间2:It is very important that to study a range of subject in addition to specialist area can help individuals widen their interests and horizons (the ranges of knowledge), which can be good to their mental health, social activities and the study of professional courses. In addition, this practice can help to develop large numbers of talents with diverse abilities (versatile abilities 多样化的能力), who tend to be more popular(往往更受欢迎)in modern society among employers and bosses.结论:Therefore, to study a wide range of subject other than professional courses should be encouraged among modern students, but it is not impossible that a few individuals in some areas of top studies only spend time on a few specialist subjects.13. Some people believe that a country can benefit a lot from university education, others believe that sending a large percentage of young students to go to university is the way leading to unemployment. Discuss.首段:Recently there is a discussion about the relationship between university education and employment. One view believes that …while the other side insists that …. I tend to agree with the former view.中间1:there are many benefits of university education for the development of countries. The most important one is that university education provide professional talents for the countries as well as help improve the public levels of literacy (文化) and knowledge and ethics (道德). Moreover, young people can find the majors of their interests by taking university education, and finallyfind jobs or create their own businesses by using the knowledge they study in universities.中间2:however, unfortunately /unluckily there are more and more young people who cannot find suitable or ideal jobs after graduating from universities, so some doubt that sending many young people to university education is leading to unemployment. Nevertheless, such views (这样类似的观点) tend to ignore the fact that unemployment is a complex issue, which is often caused by many factors other than improper education systems, for example, huge population, bad policies or even economic crisis.结论:Therefore, the university education should generally be supported, but education systems should be improved constantly while/and governments should take measures to provide large numbers of and sustainable持续的job opportunities. 15. Some people think a long-term imprisonment should act as punishment, but others think there are some alternative ways like community service. Discuss and give your opinion. Recently there is a discussion about how to punish criminals and reduce crime rate. One view believes that … while the other side insists that …. I believe that the two ways have their own advantages in different situations.中间1:Long-term imprisonments should be used when we consider those criminals whose acts have caused serious damage to others or society, for example, murderers (谋杀范) and rapists. Moreover, imprisonments can give justice (公正) to those victims as well as make up a deterring effect on society. However, those released from prisons are very likely to commit crimes again, because they often find it hard to find jobs after prison time.中间2:so, some people suggest that some alternative ways like education, training and community service should be taken/introduced. These ways can be good to some law violators, such as teenagers or those who acts have caused little damage. More importantly, education and training can help those released from prisons correct their errors and start new life by finding decent(正当的)jobs. However, prisons are necessary, obviously/clearly. Otherwise, some really bad persons may believe that they do not have to be responsible for what they do wrong.结论:Therefore, the true way is to make reasonable choices according to specific crimes, and most prisoners can be educated and trained during the prison time.16. Recent statistics show that the crimes committed by the young people in the major city of the world are on the increase. Give your analysis of the reasons and the solutions核心问题:青少年问题Disadvantages: Above all, the practice by no means can be beneficial to the development of the young people involved(涉及到的) and their families. Furthermore, this issue is of social significance, because the young people today are supposed to be the creators of human s’ tomorrow. (the tomorrow of human society)Reasons: In order to find effective solutions to the problems, it is necessary to understand what has caused the situation. First of all, young people are at the ages when they tend to lack judgment and self-control. Based on that condition, three main reasons may cause juvenile crimes. (crimes by teenagers and young people)One main reason lies with family problems, such as, home violence and bad education. Another is that many schools and universities focus on developing students’ academic abilities but ignore their mental health or ethic education. Finally, today we are living and studying with more temptations/distractions, especially from media programs and online games.Solutions: According to the reasons in discussion, I would raise the following solutions. To begin with, I believe the problems about young people’s growth should be solved by mainly considering outside factors. Considering family problems, media should help parents to educate their children in good ways while governments should make laws protect youths’ growth even in families.Speaking of campus education, schools should develop students’ interests and encourage them to take activities like sports, arts and social activities, which help students to have positive life values and good mental attitudes. Thinking of the temptations from the outside world, relevant authorities and social organizations should give more supervision.Expectations:In conclusion, there is no simple solution to the issue, but the problems could be eventually最终solved or at least slowed down, as long as my solutions were properly taken.国际类17. Rich countries often give financial aid to poor countries, but it does not solve the poverty, so rich countries should give other types of help to the poor countries rather than而不是the financial aid. To what extent do you agree or disagree?核心:how to help the poor countries. + what advantages but what are the risks (风险)of only giving financial aid?1. I cannot agree with this view completely.2. To only give financial aid is not an effective way to solve the poverty. There are two main risks. One is that poor countries may become over dependent on(依赖)the aid but find it hard to develop independently. The other risk can be that the money would not be spent in solving poverty but corrupted被贪污by some bad government officials. However, this does not mean that financial aid cannot have benefits.3. Financial aid can be necessary and beneficial in some ways. First, the money can be used to solve some very important problems and meet people’s primary demands for food, medicines or simple shelters/covers. Moreover, the money is good to the long-term development, for example, setting up more schools and providing social welfare. So, the issue should be how to avoid the risks in discussion. First and foremost(最重要), in order to help the poor countries to develop independentlyfor long time, developed countries and relevant international organizations should give some advice and training and technological support. Considering corruption, there should be stronger supervision and management on how the money should be used.5. Therefore, financial aid is necessary for poor countries to solve poverty, but other types of aid such as personnel, technologies and supervision should be also given.18. Individuals and countries can not help everyone who needs help in the world, so we should be only concerned about our own communities and countries. Agree or Disagree?核心:why relationships are important to people?/countries?1. I cannot agree with this view completely.2. Indeed, it is not likely that individuals and countries have the ability to help all who need help around the world. For example, if a person gives aid to all who are in financial difficulties, he or she may put himself or herself in difficulty/trouble. Moreover, a country has full reasons to focus most power on developing its own economies and social welfare. However, this does not mean that we should only be concerned about our own communities and countries.3. there are three main reasons for us to care about other communities and countries. First, we are living in a world of globalization, where all countries are often connected by common problems such as economic crisis, global warming and the broken nuclear power stations of Japan (可替换wars). These problems cannot be solved until all countries work together. Secondly, countries have common benefits to seek for/go after, especially considering international trade and technological development. Finally, it is in human nature to help those in need, especially when we think about those victims (受害者) of natural disasters, even at the other side of the globe.4. Therefore, it is nothing to be blamed for individuals or countries to focus their energy on their own development, but considering international situations and humanity, it should be encouraged to care about others communities and countries. 23. Nowadays some people like to give or provide help to people in need in local community directly, while others prefer to give money to the national or international organization. Discuss both views and give your opinion.I believe the two ways of helping those in need are both acceptable and have their respective advantages as well as limitations. There are advantages to giving help to those in need in local communities directly. First, the help is immediate. For example, those old people or disabled people who live alone can be taken good care of. Moreover, the experience is often valuable to those who give help, which can be good to their future development. However, some individuals such as busy workers and/or disabled people can find it hard to do that.On the other hand, there are also benefits to give money to the organizations. First and foremost, the aid can cover more people in need, especially considering those victims of natural disasters or special people like AIDS patients. In addition, individuals can give such aid with little limitation of time and places by using the Internet. However, it is likely that the money given can be corrupted by bad officials. Therefore, individuals can make their own choices by considering their working conditions and the purpose of the aid. However, there should be stronger supervision on the money given to charity organizations by mass media and relevant authorities. Some people believe that students should only learn practical subjects such as economics and computer science rather than wide range of subjects like music and sports.
