Why I Came to College? Why have I choose to attend college? Is the four-year academic life worthwhile? I have put these questions to myself at many times in the past two years. It is impossible to sit in the classroom listening to the lectures without being distracted for a moment by the fatter wallets carried by the high-school graduates who have made a big fortune. It is impossible to stay up very late preparing for the examinations without wondering for a moment whether I made a wise choice as a college man. After pondering these questions on many occasions, I have finally reached the conclusion that college education is something I truly want to and it is worthwhile.Admittedly , my parents did influence my opinions about college I can still hear my father saying," Go to college, my boy." They were persistent but not demanding and respected my decision. And I did realize some disadvantages of continuing college education, which would cost me too much personal happiness as well as a great sum of money. But I attended college for every reason other than finance.I attended college because I enjoy learning andgaining knowledge. I remember as I proceeded further through high school into my junior and senior years, I became genuinely interested in Chemistry, Physics and Maths. I felt that I wanted to continue to study these areas and that I would not be content to simply end my educational career with high school and enter the working world so soon. It was then that I began to recognize in myself a strong drive to obtain knowledge. The need to continue learning felt increasingly strong as my high school career was drawing to a close and the decision to attend college seemed a natural one.I did not choose to attend merely because I feel college is a plane which helps one to seek scientific truth. It also helps one to become a well-rounded person. With courses and lectures concerning different fields of study available, and the best brains in the country on the campus, it throws me into contact with a rich variety of society and political ideas, helping to expend my horizons and widen my outlooks.I do not want to conceal my material motive, apart from academic and philosophical ones. In today's world, a college education has become almost essential if onewishes to compete in the job market. In the next several years, this trend will surely continue, with a Bachelor's degree becoming almost indispensable one wishes to find a desirable career. I felt that attending college was a practical and necessary step which I took to ensure a secure future for myself. Why have I chosen to attend college? Sometimes I'm unsure of the exact reason myself. I'm sure, however, the desire to obtain knowledge pushed me toward college. For this reason, I never mind spending countless beautiful nights on paperworks; I never consider myself unhappy, miserable and unfairly burdened, and I never think college is a waste of time and money.。
Nowadays, most of the senior school students choose to attend a college or a university. From my perspective, the main reasons why I went to college lie in the following.Above all, when we graduated from high school, we didn’t have enough social experience and knowledge. The knowledge we owned from high school does not meet the need of modern society. Image this, a person who only has high school certificate, if you are a manager what kind of job will you provide? For getting more experience and knowledge, I must go to a higher plat, so I chose to attend college.Second, to get a proper job, I must go to college. With the boom of economy, you can find it so difficult to get a job for the ones who do not attend college. With the high rate of unemployment, it is high time we went to college to improve ourselves. The third one is for my dream or an ideal life. When we are young, we have colorful dreams, such as to be a scientist, a doctor or a teacher. My dream of being a scientist like Newton have not altered after so many years, which is a motivation that urge me to have a college life and pursue higher goals. To attend a college is also a dream for my family, who did not have the chance to make it, so it is absolutely a mission for me to achieve. In a word, I cherish a belief that attending a college is indeed a brilliant way for me to be successful and get what I want.。

My name is Jamie and I'm 10 years old. I know I'm just a kid, but I already can't wait to go to university someday! I have so many reasons why I want to get a university education. Let me tell you all about it.First of all, I love learning new things. At school, I'm always eager to raise my hand and answer the teacher's questions. I get really excited whenever we start a new unit or subject. My favorite classes are math, science, and reading because I find those subjects super interesting. In math, I love solving tough word problems and learning new concepts like fractions and geometry. Science is awesome because we get to do fun experiments and learn about how the world works. And I'm a total bookworm - I devour every book I can get my hands on, both fiction and non-fiction.I'm the kind of kid who is always asking "why?" I want to understand how things work and know all the details. Whenever my parents explain something to me, I always follow up with a million more questions. I'm just really curious by nature. That's why I think university would be perfect for me - it's a place where I can delve deeply into subjects that fascinate me and satisfy my craving for knowledge.Another big reason I want to go to university is because I hope to have an amazing career when I grow up. And you'll meet people from all over the world with different backgrounds and perspectives. My parents met their best friends at university and still keep in touch with them today. I have put this question to myself at many times and in various forms during the past three and a half months which have constituted the first semester of my freshman year. Have I come because of parental influence, or because I have some goal of my own that I wish to pursue? After pondering these questions on many occasions, I have finally reached the conclusion that I have come to college not for one single reason, but for many, and that it is something that I truly want to do.(2) Originally, my parents did influence my opinions about education in general. My mother, an elementary school teacher, was always proud of my academic successes, but she never really pushed me or demanded that I achieve excellent grades. However, from the beginning of my schooling, my parents seemed to assume that I would attend college, and by the time I reached high school, I had become accustomed to that idea as well.(3) When I entered high school, I enrolled in the college preparatory program offered there, loo ahead four years to college attendance. However, as I proceeded further through high school into my junior and senior years, I became genuinely interested in many of the subjects which I was studying. Chemistry, physics, andcalculus were the courses which held my interest most strongly and I felt that I wanted to continue to study those areas beyond the high school level. Up to that point in my life, I had always claimed that I wanted to attend college. but didn’t realize why until my high school career drew to a close.(4) Finally, I began to recognize in myself a strong drive to obtain knowledge. I knew that I would not be content to simply end my educational career with high school and enter the wor world. I truly felt a need to continue learning in order to gain a better understanding of the world around me. My final decision to attend college seemed a natural one, and my choice of engineering as a field of study came easily as well, since the profession fit well with my academic preferences.(5) The fact that I enjoy learning and gaining knowledge was my main reason for choosing to enter college, but I must admit that it was not the sole reason. In today’s world, a college education has become al most essential if one wishes to compete in the job market. In the next several years, this trend will surely continue, with a Bachelor’s degree becoming almost indispensable if one wishes to find a worthwhile position, and a Master’s degree becoming highly desirable for advanced positions. Although it may sound materialistic, I felt that attending college was a practical and necessary step which I took to ensure a secure future for myself and my family. I made my choice to study engineering primarily on the basis of my love of mathematics and the physical sciences; however, the fact that it is a well-paid and respected profession did have some influence on my final decision to study engineering, rather than a pure science curriculum. Either field would have allowed me to study those subjects which hold my interest, but the decision to pursue the one which would ultimately be more profitable was not a difficult choice to make.(6) A third reason that I am attending college is that I have always hoped that I could make a contribution to the world. I knew that a career involving science and technology would give me the best opportunity to do this. I also knew that in order to pursue such a career, I would be required to go through college. Hopefully, this will enable me to someday make a contribution to the expansion of the frontiers of society’s knowledge, and to in some way benefit mankind.(7) Finally, I chose to attend a diversified college, as opposed to a purely technical institute, because I feel that college should allow a person to grow in areas other than pure academics. It should also expose that student to a variety of social and political ideas, helping to expand his mental horizons. Attending Rutgers University has definitely allowed me to come into contact with a wide variety of lifestyles which could only be found together on a collegiate campus. Additionally, while I am able to major in a scientific field at Rutgers, I am able to simultaneously take courses which explore other fields of study and allow me to become a more diversified and well-rounded person. This overall gain of general knowledge which is available only to the college student is another reason that I was lured toward the pursuitof a higher education.(8) Thus, I came to college not for one reason, but for several different ones. It was something that I had planned, even without fully knowing why, for several years. It was certainly the next logical step in my educational career after the completionof high school. However, only in my final two years of high school did I actually begin to recognize in myself the inherent desire to obtain information and learning which pursue the other goals which I had set for myself. I also knew that I wantedto become a more diversified person, and that a college education was the best meansto attain that end.(9) Why have I chosen to attend college? Sometimes I am unsure of the exact reason myself. I am sure, however, that it is what I should do and what I want to do with the next four years of my life.III. In a 1995 poll conducted by the Gallup Organization, quite a few people said they would do so, yet researchers find that work is one of life’s chief satisfactions for many people.Consider Liu Yian, 23, a former school teacher. Before she quit her job in 1994, she taught at a high school. Although the salary was quite moderate, she liked her job and worked so successfully that in only one year’s time after her graduation from college, she not only won a prize for excellence in teaching, but also enjoyed wide popularity among her students. In her second teaching year, however, she met a millionaire and got married; and went to live in Hong Kong with her husband. There she led a very comfortable and easy life, spending most of her days doing shopping and going traveling. You should write noless than 150 words and base your composition on the outline (givenin Chinese) below:1.许多大学都实行上课出勤点名制2.你认为有无必要实行这种制度3.为什么Required class attendance is so common at colleges and universities that may teachers and even students themselves simply assume it is a good thing. In fact, required class attendance does more harm than good. There are several reasons that teachers should not require attendance. First, rigid attendance policies do not benefit students; studies. For example, a student may have to give up a lecture which he finds vital to his studies simply because he dare not run the risk of being penalized for poor attendance in his course. Second, the lectures of some teachers are not always constructive. A student should be allowed to decide for himself whether an in-class experience is worthwhile when his teacher merely repeats material from the textbook or wastes class time by telling irrelevant stories. Finally and most importantly, there is no proven correlation between attendance and performance, but who knows whether or not he is just sitting there daydreaming all the time?Required class attendance may secure one hundred percent attendance for a course, but it does not make much sense.Problem of PiracyDirections: For this part, you are allowed thirty minutes to write a composition on the topic Problem of Piracy. Books, tapes, VCDs and other high-tech products almost all have been pirated. When a new product comes into market, very probably, its pirated counterpart will soon make its appearance in the market, too.Piracy has caused a great loss to the legitimate (合法的) producers, inventors and writers, and made great confusion in the markets. Because the pirated products often cost much less than the genuine ones, they enjoy a pretty good selling in spite of their relatively poor quality, The genuine products, on the contrary, sell poorly. This happens especially to some high-tech products, whose prices are often expensive. In addition, in the case of the pirated books, sometimes, they do great harm to the authors’ names due to some misprintings. However, piracy doesn’t benefit those customers who buy the pirated products, because in the long run, customers will suffer a big loss for the sake of small gains. Shouldn’t we solve the problem now?In my opinion, the problem of piracy should receive due attention now, and it’s time everyone stated the battle against piracy. First, customers should develop their consciousness to resist the pirated products. Besides, government should take effective measures to stop piracy. Finally stronger laws must be strictly executed to completely ban piracy. Only in this way can we wipe out piracy.Cyber CrimesDirections: For this part you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic Cyber Crimes. You should write noless than 150 words and base your composition on the outline (givenin Chinese) below:1.有人认为解决能源危机的方法是厉行节约2.有人则认为开发新的能源是最好办法3.我的看法When asked about one of the biggest problems today, many people say that an energy crisis is approaching and is threatening mankind’s survival. They are afraid that the world is likely to run out of oil and metals and to run short of food in the near future. To this problem, most countries respond with the demand for more rigid conservation of our natural resources. Indeed, this is urgently needed, for the present waste of energy in industrial and personal consumption in so serious that it has become habitual and traditional. If the natural resources are used economically, we can certainly slow down the present drain on the limited energy supply. However, conservation alone is not the answer. It is obvious that even if we can save much energy, we can only delay the energy crisis, but cannot solve the problem completely. However abundant certain natural resources may be, they cannot reproduce themselves and are bound to be used up ultimately. So in the long run we must develop new sources of energy instead of merely conserving the known, limited supplies.Man is highly adaptable and creative, and sine he is able to tap such resources as oil and metals, why can’t he develop and harness solar energy, unclear energy and other unknown energy resources? To Leave or to Stay—My Choice on GraduationDirections:For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic To Leave or to Stay—My Choice on Graduation. You should write no lessthan 150 words and base your composition on the outline (given inChinese) below:1. He used to be a thief.” We often hear others talk about somebody like this. People often do not believe a person who has once been a thief. But one has once been a thief, one is always a thief? Some people believe that once a person has committed some kind of crime, he will never be a respectable man. They think that the fact a person once has been a thief shows that he want to be a thief deep in his heart. His subconscious of being a thief will let him do wrong again and again. So they will never believe a person who was once a thief. They will always consider him a thief.Whereas I believe that a person can become a good person, though he once has done wrong. Deep in a person’s heart, everybody wants to be a respectable man. It is the bad outside environment that causes him commit some kind of crime. So a good environment can also make him a good man. If we all treat him fairly, and show him the right way to do, everybody can give up evil and return to good. From this point of view, we should not consider a person that once has been a thief as a thief forever. We should believe that he can return to good, andwe should help him to do this. There is an old Chinese saying “It is the best of best that a person correct his own mistake.”。

4.To Leave or to Stay--My Choice on Graduation
To leave or to stay when graduation is the question that almost every college student should consider. They all have their own reasons for their choices.
Some students want to apply for a job as soon as they graduated. These reasons may explain it. First, they wish to be financially independent. From primary school to college, parents cost so much money on our education, so we should work to make money to reduce their burdens. Second, some students keen to earn work experience, so that they can find a really good job to have a bright future. In addition, Some students want to apply theory to practice early, so they leave school when they graduated.
However, staying in school for further study is the choice of other students. They want to get more knowledge and get a higher degree. Also, a higher degree may mean a higher starting point when they enter the society.
For me, I may choose the second view. I want to have a further study in my education. People will not complain that they have too much knowledge. So my goal is to get more knowledge and get higher degrees.。
