In the central square I stopped for a while, and listened to the music playing on the school’s radio station. Students were happily moving from class to class along the corridors. Professors were smiling broadly and exchanging greetings with students in a friendly manner. The reason is our accelerated pace of life and our failure to control it. Meanwhile, people are getting lazier and spoiled by the convenience of modern life. To get back the happy life we used to have, one solution is to spend less time on the computer and put down our cellphones. We need to talk to our family and friends more, instead of sending emails or text messages. Another possible solution is that we shouldspend more time doing things together with loved ones. For example, we could organize parties, visit neighbors, plan family trips, just like in the old times. We should not let social media and electronic devices control us and destroy our way of life.CET-Oriented StudyListening1、D2、B3、C4、B5、B6、D7、C8、DReading Comprehension(1)E(2)B(3)D(4)I(5)H(6)G(7)A(8)F(9)I(10)JParagraph Translation(翻译参考)Being sociable looks like a good way to add years to your life. The beauty about it is that I can always find a song to identify with, whether at a time of happiness, loneliness or sorrow. Some scientists have found that people can boost their mood simply by listening to upbeat music. For instance, I listen to pop music with happy melodies, when I have something to celebrate. When feeling relaxed, I love to lay back and listen to jazz in particular. While I am disturbed by the problems of my study, soft music without lyrics will soothe me and make me concentrate. To me, listening tomusic can fuel my soul and ultimately lead to a better quality of life.Sample 2Everyone has an instinctive understanding of how music interacts with our moods. Some scientists have found that listening to music can improve our moods. Of all types of music I love classical music most because it gives me power and comfort. At a time of happiness, classical music creates such a calming atmosphere that I feel completely at peace. When life disappoints me, however, those masterpieces encourage me and give me strength to recover. Specifically, I love Bach’s music best. Some pieces help me concentrate when I am working. While some other pieces assist me in battling insomnia. Last month, my family saw a news ad for the city marathon and we immediately decided to sign up for it. Our running practice started immediately the next morning. On the day of the marathon, we got to the starting point early enough for the warm-up. At 9 o’clock, lots of runners arrived. Soon, we began to put number tags on our T-shirts. At 9:30, as the starting gun went off, all of us headed out and the long run began. People along the road cheered us on and provided drinking water for us. After 20 miles, all of us slowed down and felt a little tired. Dad, who still led our team, toldus to adjust our breathing and pace. Then later, we started walking and encouraging one another to finish the race. We were so thrilled when we got to the finish, though we didn’t win. Exhausted as we were, we realized that joy and satisfaction come from participation, not from winning the race.Sample 2The most exciting soccer match this year was the final game of our school’s soccer tournament to determine the champion. At the beginning, both teams —the chemistry department and the biology department —put forth supreme defensive performances. Meanwhile, both teams kept seeking chances to score a goal, but neither one got the opportunity. At half-time, the advantage lay with the chemistry department. In the second half, the game opened up and several attractive shots were made. But 15 minutes before the end of the game, the chemistry department team’s forward was shown a red card and sent off for serious foul play. The advantage in numbers enabled the biology department team to play confidently and they finally scored 2 goals in the last 10 minutes. That was a very unexpected but memorable soccer game.CET-Oriented StudyListening1、B2、C3、A4、D5、B6、CBanked Cloze(1)D.anxiety(2)I. dropping(3)N. critical(4)G. cooperate(5)H. greatly(6)F. cautious(7)A. process(8)O. enjoying(9)L. focus(10)B.highParagraph Translation(翻译参考)Table tennis is a sport which gains much popularity and acclaim in China. While college students face the obvious social challenges that usually involve leaving one’s entire support structure behind, creating a new social network, dealing with being away from home for the first time and finding less parental support, many students also face social stress. How or when he got to America, I don't know. But one evening I found him standing in the driveway, behind my garage. Hethin."I mow your lawn," he said. It was hard to comprehend his broken English.I asked him his name. "Tony Trivisonno," he replied. "I mow your lawn." I told Tony that I couldn't afford a gardener."I mow your lawn," he said again, then walked away. I went into my house unhappy. Yes, these Depression days were difficult, but how could I turn away a person whoWhen I got home from work the next evening, the lawn had been mowed, the garden weed ed, and the walk s swept. I asked my wife what had happened."A man got the lawn mower out of the garage and worked on the yard," she answered. "I assume d you had hire d him."I told her of my experience the night before. We thought it strange that he had not asked for pay.The next two days were busy, and Itrying to rebuild our business and bring some of our workers back to the plant s. But on Friday, returning home a little early, I saw Tony again, behind the garage. I compliment ed him on the work he had done."I mow your lawn," he said.I managed to work out some kind of small weekly pay, and each day Tony cleaned up the yard and took care of any little task s. My wife said he was very helpful whenever there were any heavy object s to lift or things to fix.pretty soon," Tony told me one evening. "When winter come, you give me job clearing snow at the factory."Well, what do you do with such determination and hope? Of course, Tony got his job at the factory. The months passed. "I want to be 'prentice," he said.We had a pretty good apprentice school that train ed laborer s. But I doubt ed whether Tony had the capacity to read blueprint s and micrometer s or do precision work. Still, how could I turn him down?Tony took a cut in pay to become an apprentice. Months later, I got a report that he had graduate d as a skilled grinder. He hadlearned to read the millionth s of an inch on the micrometer and to shape the grinding wheel with an instrument set with adiamond. My wife and I were delightedA year or two passed, and again I found Tony in his usual waiting place. We talked about his work, and I asked him what"Mr. Craw," he said, "I like a buy a house." On the edge of town, he had found a house for sale, a complete wreck.I called on a banker friend. "Do you ever loan money oncharacter?" I asked. "No," he said. "We can't"Now, wait a minute," I replied. "Here is a hard-working man, a man of character, I can promise you that. He's got a good job.will stay there for years. At least he will pay your interest."Reluctantly, the banker wrote a mortgage for $2,000 and gave Tony the house with no down payment. Tony was delighted. From then on, it was interesting to see that any discard ed odds and ends around our place — a broken screen, a bit of hardware, board s from packing— Tony would gather and take home.He seemed to stand a little straight er. He was heavier. He had a look of confidence."Mr. Craw, I sell my house!" he said with pride. "I got $8,000."I was amaze d. With an amuse d look in his eye, he told me that when they approach ed the little farm he nowoperate d, his friend and said, "Tony, you are a millionaire!"Then, during the war, a message came from my company. The children were educated and working, and Tony didn't owe a cent. After he passed away, I thought more and more about Tony'scareer. He in my mind. In the end, I think he stood as tall, and as proud, as the greatest American industrialist s.They had all reached their success by the same route and by the same value s and principle s: vision, determination, self-control, optimism, self-respect and, above all, integrity.Tony did not begin on the bottom rung of the ladder. He began in the basement.Tony's affair s were tiny; the greatest industrialist s' affairs were giant. But, after all, the balance sheet swere exactly the same. The only difference was where you put the decimal point.Tony Trivisonno came to America seek ing the American Dream. But he didn't find it — he created it for himself. Listening and Speaking1.2. For referenceMy favorite sport is basketball, which I think is very exciting and demanding. It takes a lot of time to practice and involves teamspirit, which I think is the most important. Team spirit is not only important in basketball, but also in other sports. Even in individual events like diving or tennis, you still need assistance from a team of coaches, instructors and physical condition experts. You have to rely not only on yourself but on your teammates as well in order to win.Text AReading Comprehension1.•1) b•2) a•3) e•4) h •5) f•6) c•7) d•8) g2.Reading and Discussing3.For reference1) Elizabeth didn’t want to compete because of her nerves; she wasworried she would do something wrong and let everyone down. The swim night may motivate Elizabeth to compete in the future, because she gained confidence from the T-shirt relay.2) The ways include: train to become physically strong; studystrategies to perform better; practice to be consistent; practice with their teammates and build mutual trust; set goals to reach.Language in Use4.•1) contract•2) countered•3) extraordinary•4) flap•5) flipped•6) quit•7) stems•8) relived•9) moderate•10) shivering5.•1) compete in•2) are competing for•3) in the zone•4) in the lead•5) have gained in•6) gaining on•7) come up with •8) catch up with•9) fall off•10) fell down6.•1) the record•2) the ice•3) the law•4) one’s promise •5) my heart•6) the habit7.For reference•1) revolutions•2) involved •3) involvement•4) evolved •5) revise•6) supervise •7) visible•8) visual •9) dictators•10) contradicted•11) dictation•12) predict8.Reference translation1) 看她游泳真是太棒了!她转身转得非常好。

Dad, who still led our team, told us to adjust our breathing and pace. Then later, we started walking and encouraging one another to finish the race. We were so thrilled when we got to the finish, though we didn’t win. Exhausted as we were, we realized that joy and satisfaction came from participation, not from winning the race.Sample 2The most exciting soccer match this year was the final game of our school’s soccer tournament to determine the champion. At the beginning, both teams — the chemistry department and the biology department — put forth supreme defensive performances. Meanwhile, both teams kept seeking chances to score a goal, but neither one got the opportunity. At half-time, the advantage lay with the chemistry department. In the second half, the game opened up and several attractive shots were made. But 15 minutes before the end of the game, the chemistry department team’s forward got a red card and sent off for seriousfoul play. The advantage in the number of players enabled the biology department team to play confidently and they finally scored 2 goals in the last 10 minutes. That was a very unexpected but memorable soccer game.。
