2010年高考英语阅读理解专项测试题Everyone becomes a little more forgetful as they get older, but men's minds decline more than women's, according to the results of a worldwide survey. Certain differences seem to be inherent in male and female brains: Men are better at maintaining and dealing with mental images (useful in mathematical reasoning and spatial skills), while women tend to excel (擅长) at recalling information from their brain's files (helpful with language skills and remembering the locations of objects). Many studies have looked for a connection between sex and the amount of mental decline (衰退) people experience as they age, but the results have been mixed. Some studies found more age-related decline in men than in women, while others saw the opposite or even no relationship at all between sex and mental decline. Those results could be improper because the studies involved older people, and women live longer than men: The men tested are the survivors, "so they're the ones that may not have shown such cognitive decline," said study team leader Elizabeth of the University of Warwick in England. People surveyed completed four tasks that tested sex-related cognitive skills: matching an object to its rotated form, matching lines shown from the same angle, typing as many words in a particular category (范畴) as possible in the given time, e.g. "object usually colored gray", and recalling the location of objects in a line drawing. The first two were tasks at which men usually excel; the latter are typically dominated by women. Within each age group studied, men and women performed better in their separate categories on average. And though performance declined with age for both genders, women showed obviously less decline than men overall.1. The underlined word in the second paragraph means_________.A. naturalB. greatC. obviousD. absolute 2. According to thepassage, which of the following can Not be typed into the same category? A. cloud B. sheep C. trees D. goose 3. Which of the following statements is true according the article? A. Men do better than women when it comes to learning English. B. Women stand out at remembering people’s names. C. Men excel at typing as many words in a particular category as possible in the given time. D. Women excel at dealing mathematic problems. 4. One important factor that affects the correctness of the results is that _________. A. the old men tested may not have shown such cognitive decline B. people surveyed are all old C. people taking part in this test came from all over the world D. women live longer than men 5. The author aims to tell us that__________. A. women’s minds perform better than men’s B. men’s minds decline more with age C. everyone becomes a little more forgetful as they get older D. a survey on human’s mind decline was done recently 参考答案与解析: 1、答案为A。

I had always believed that men and women in our country were not only equal in social position but also in intelligence. But when I first entered the college, I found that some boy students seemed indeed to be more intelligent and much quicker at understanding than girl students. I felt somewhat inferior, and I began to doubt whether I could succeed. Are men and women really equal in intelligence? I am often troubled by the question. Then I happened to got hold of a book about Madame Curie. I was deeply impressed by her strong will power. Madame Curie worked hard so she became a top student in her university. After graduation she became a well-known physicist and some years later she got the Nobel Prize. From then on, she became a great encouragement to me in my study. Where there is a will, there is a way. At last I became the top student in my class and got the first prize in the English and physics competitions. This made me feel certain that women are no less clever than men. Besides, I was also active in physical exercises. I joined the track and field team and took part in ping-pong competitions. I was really proud of myself for beingthe women's all-round champion in the sports meeting of our college. This proved again that a girl can do just as well as a boy.[写作内容](1) 以约30个词概括短文的要点;(2) 然后以约120个词就"妇女在社会中的地位"的主题发表看法,并包括如下要点:①男人能干的事女人照样能干,女人可以当工人、科学家乃至领导;②女人在家庭中的地位也有了改善,妻子和丈夫在家庭中地位平等;③还有人认为男人比女人强并应享有更多的权利,比如很少有女人被准许参加一些重要的国际会议;④你对此的看法。

Part IV Reading Comprehension(Reading in Depth)(25 minutes)Section ADirections: In this section, there is a short passage with 5 questions or incomplete statements.Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewest possible words. Please write your answers on Answer Sheet 2.Questions 47 to 51 are based on the following passage.Question: My ninth-grade art teacher doesn't give any grade above 94% because, she says, “There's always room for improvement.” In previous years, I earned a 99% and a 100%.The 94 I received this term does not reflect the hard work that I put into this course.Because of her “improvement” theory, I got a lower grade than I deserve. Is her grading philosophy ethical(符合职业道德规范的)?Answer: Your teacher's grading system may be unwise, but it is not unethical.A teacher deserves wide latitude in selecting the method of grading that best promotes learning in her classroom;that is, after all, the prime function of grades. It is she who has the training and experience to make this decision.Assuming that your teacher is neither biased nor corrupt and that her system conforms to school rules, you can't fault her ethics. You can criticize her methodology.A 100 need not imply that there is no possibility of improvement, only that a studentsuccessfully completed the course work.A ninth grader could get a well-earned 100 in English class but still have a way to go before she writes as well as Jane Austen. What's more, grades are not only an educational device but are also part of a screening system to help assign kids to their next class or program.By capping her grades at 94 while most other teachers grade on a scale that tops out at 100, your teacher could jeopardize a student's chance of getting a scholarship or getting into a top college. What it is wrong to condemn her for is overlooking your hard work. You diligence is worthy of encouragement, but effort does not equal accomplishment. If scholars suddenly discovered that Rembrandt had dashed off “The Night Watch” in an afternoon, it would still be “The Night Watch.”I could spend mon ths sweating over my own “paintings”, but I'd produce something you wouldn't want to hang in your living room.Or your garage. One feature of a good grading system is that those measured by it generally regard it as fair and reasonable—not the case here.Simmering(难以平息的)resentment is seldom an aid to education. And so your next step should be to discuss your concerns with your teacher or the principal.注意:此部分试题请在答题卡2上作答。

第一节每小题2分,第二节每小题1分;满分45分)第一节阅读下面短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。
AWith the launch of the exploratory Chang'e 1 lunar orbiter on Oct.24,2007, more people are dreaming of one day living on the moon. NASA has said this could be a reality within the next 20 years. So what sort of lifestyle can the first lunar residents(居民) expect?HousingThe moonbases of science fiction tend to be spacious(宽敞的),glass domes(圆顶)in which lunar residents wander around in futuristic jumpsuits. But the reality will be a bit different. "Domes are not very good at filtering(过滤;渗透)our solar radiation, says Professor Colin Pillinger of the Open University in the UK. "If you have a solar storm, you don't want a nice little glass dome over you. You want something a bit more substantial (坚固的;实质的).(Solar radiation, by the way, could give you cancer.)HealthThe biggest challenge to setting up a base on the moon is the danger of living in an environment with no gravity. Scientists have found that muscles and bones start wasting away in zero gravity. It's uncertain whether the same thing would happen on the moon, which has one-sixth of the Earth's gravity. As for radiation from the sun, the surface of the moon appears to be safe enough. But no one knows the consequences(后果) of spending a long time there.Food and WaterIn the short term, food would have to be brought from the Earth. The dream, however, is to grow things in greenhouses on the moon. This would involve suspending(使悬浮)plants in a nutrientrich solution(溶液)of water.Water is not a big problem. Scientists suspect that the moon's south pole has large pools of frozen water. These could be mined and used to drink and create oxygen for habitats. TransportationDr.Harrison Schmitt, who landed on the moon in 1972, has said that astronauts can move around the moon by cross-country skiing. But this isn't a long-term solution. Something similar to the buggy(小型敞蓬车)designed for 1970s Apollo missions would allow residents to explore beyond the backyard of their moon home. They could even use the buggy to transport heavy equipment.41.The most likely place to find water on the moon is .A. in a rainforestB. close to mountainsC. the moon's south poleD. lakes42. Which of the following statements is perhaps the better transportation on the moon?A. cross-country skiingB. buggyC. busD. plane43. From the text we know that .A. a person started wasting awayB. there are many people living on the moonC. the lanar residents wander around the moonD. you don't want a nice little glass dome over you if you havea solar storm44. What does the word unerline meanA. growing unhealthily thin or weakB. wasteful personC. material that is thrown awayD. having nothing to doBFor me the most interesting thing about a single life, and mine has been that for the last twenty years, is that it becomesincreasingly rewarding. Wnen I can wake up and watch the sun rise over the ocean, as I do most days, and know that I have a whole day ahead, uninterrupted. I may write a few pages, take a walk with my dog,lie down in the afternoon for a think, read and listen to music, I am flooded with happiness.I am lonely only when I am overtired, when I have worked too long without a break, when for the time being I feel empty and need filling up. And I am lonely sometimes when I come back home after a lecture trip, when I have seen a lot of people and talked a lot, and am full to the brim[(杯、碗等的)边缘]with experience that needs to be sorted out(整理;理顺)。

In her book, she describes that awful day, almost 40 years ago, when she received two pieces of life-changing news. As a result, facial expressions that had been considered universally recognizable cannot be used to reliably convey emotion in cross-cultural situations. The researchers studied cultural differences in the recognition of facial expressions by recording the eye movements of 13 Western Caucasian and 13 East Asian people while they observed pictures of. expressive faces and put them into categories: happy, sad, surprised, fearful, disgusted, angry, or neutral. They compared how accurately participants read those facial expressions using their particular eye movement strategies. It turned out that Easterners focused much greater attention on the eyes and made significantly more errors than did expressions,”Jack said. “Our data suggest that whereas Westerners use the whole face to convey emotion, Easterners use the eyes more and mouth less. ”In short, the data show that facial expressions are not universal signals of human emotion. From here on, examining how cultural factors have diversified these basic social skills will help our understanding of human emotion. Fill in the numbered blanks by using the information from the passage. Write NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS for each answer. An apprenticeship is a form of on-the-job training that combines workplace experience and classroom learning. It can last anywhere from one to six years, but four years is typical for most. An apprentice spends the majority of the time in a workplace environment learning the practical skills of a career from a journeyman– someone who has done the job for many years. The rest of the apprentice's time is spent in a classroom environment learning the theoretical skills the career requires. Being an apprentice is a full-time undertaking. One of the advantages of apprenticeship is that it does not cost apprentices anything. The companies that hire them pay for school. What’s more, it offers apprentices an “earn while you learn” opportunity. They u sually start out at half the pay of a journeyman, and the pay increases gradually as they move further along in the job and studies. Near the end of the apprenticeship, their wages are usually 90 percent of what a journeyman would receive. Apprenticeship also pays off for employers. It can offer employers a pool of well-trained workers to draw from.Despite the advantages, apprentices are usually required to work during the day and attend classes at night, which leaves little time for anything else. Sometimes, they might be laid off(下岗 if business for the employers is slow.Once they have completed the apprenticeship and become journeymen, they receive a nationally recognized and portable certification and their pay also increases again. Some journeymen continue employment with the companies they apprenticed with; others go on to different companies or become self-employed contractors. Indeed ,for many of the poorest regions(地区)of the world, it remains the next big thing——finally becomes globally available. And that is a good thing, because the TV revolution is changing lives for the better.Across the developing world, around 45% of families had a TV in 1995; by 2005 the number had climbed above 60%. That is some way behind the U. S. ,where there are more TVs than people, and where people now easily get access to the Internet. Five million more families in sub-Saharan Africa will get a TV over the next five years. In 2005 , after the fall of the Taliban(塔利班),which had outlawed TV, I in 5 Afghans had one. In India, researchers Robert Jensen and Emily Oster found that when TVs reached villages, women were more likely to go to the market without their husbands approval and less likely to want a boy rather than a girl. They were more likely to make decisions over child health care. TV is also a powerful medium for adult education. However, shoppers are still laying stress on environmental concerns.while more than a quarter say that they are now even better aware of the environmental effect on what they buy. This may help to influence how shops store goods on their shelves. And the companies should still make efforts to become more environmentally friendly. Two out of three people think it is important to buy from environmentally responsible companies, with about one in seven saying that they had even decided to take their custom elsewhere if they felt a company’s environmental reputation was not good enough.Harry Morrison, chief executive(主管)of the Carbon Trust, sympathizes:“I understand this situation where survival is very important now. But from environmentalconsiderations, the clock is ticking—we don’t have much time. In addition, cutting carbon has an immediate effect as costs drop and a medium-term benefit for the brand. ”Larger companies have an extra motivation to look at reducing their carbon footprint, as new rules next year will require businesses to buy carbon allowances to make up for their emissions(排放). Those that have taken early action will have a head start. More than two thirds of consumers are not clear about which companies are environmentally responsible. This suggests that firms that are able to relay clearly their message to the public will be in a pole position to attract shoppers. The Carbon Trust believes that it can help by informing customers about the good work companies are doing. “When companies are granted(授予)the standard, they can use a logo(标识)in all their marketing which makes it clear that they are working towards cutting emissions,”Mr. Morrison said. 64. 2010年高考英语预测系列试题(6)·阅读理解适用:全国阅读理解预测两篇(一)Money spent on advertising is money spent as swell as any I know of. It serves directly to bring about a rapid sale of goods at reasonable prices, setting up a firm home market and making it possible to provide for export at good prices. By drawing attention to new ideas it helps greatly to raise standards of living. By helping to increase demand it causes an increased need for labor, and is therefore a nice way to fight unemployment. It lowers the costs of many services: without advertisement your daily newspaper would cost four times as much, your price of television program would need to be doubled, and travel by bus or subway would cost more. And perhaps the most important of all, advertising provides a promise of reasonable value in the products and services you buy. Besides the fact that twenty-seven Acts of Parliament govern the terms of advertising, no regular advertiser dare produce anything that fails to live up to the promise of his advertisements. He might fool some people for a little while through misleading advertising. He will not do so for long, for the public has the good sense not to but the poor goods more than once. If you see the product frequently advertised, it is the proof I know that the product does what it promised for it, and that it has good value.Advertising does more for the good of the public than other force I can think of.There is one more point I feel I ought to touch on. Recently I heard a well-known television person declare that he was against advertising because it persuades rather than informs. He was telling us the real difference. Of course advertising tries to persuade. If its message were nothing but information, that would be difficult to get more people to buy, for even the choice of the color of a shirt is a bit persuasive--advertising would be so boring that no one would pay any attention. But perhaps that is what the well-known television person wants.1. By the first sentence of the passage the writer means that ______.A. he is fairly familiar with the cost of advertisingB. everybody knows well that advertising is a waste of moneyC. advertising costs more money than anything elseD. money spent on advertising is worth spending2. In the passage, which of the following is NOT included in the advantages of advertising?A. Getting greater fame.B. Providing more jobs.C. Raising living standards.D. reducing newspaper costs.3. The writer thinks that the well-known TV person is ______.A. quite right in passing his judgement on advertisingB. interested in nothing but the buyer's attentionC. correct in telling the difference between persuasion and informingD. obviously unfair in his views on advertising4. In the writer's opinion, ______.A. advertising can seldom bring material interest to man by providing informationB. advertising informs people of new ideas rather than wins them overC. there is nothing wrong with advertising in persuading the buyerD. the buyer is not interested in getting information from an advertisement(二)A new President with an ambitious agenda(议程). That describes former Nicaraguan foreign minister Miguel d'Escoto Brockmann, who took office at the United Nations this week as the organization's General Assembly opened its 63rd session. The new President's immediate agenda for all 192 members includes addressing the global food crisis, reforming the UN Security Council, and combating (防止) climate change. As Brockmann addressed the Assembly, he noted that "trillions of dollars are spent on wars of aggression, while more than half the world's people are in hunger and poverty." During this session, members will examine the root causes of the world food crisis caused by rising food prices, and its impact on world hunger and poverty. President Brockmann identified the root of world hunger as unequal trade of agricultural goods within and between countries. The issue of expanding the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) will likely cause heated debate during the Assembly. The UNSC is a powerful section of the United Nations, in charge of maintaining international peace and security. Currently, the UNSC has 15 members: 10 rotating, non-permanent members and five permanent ones. The five permanent members—China, United States, France, the United Kingdom, and Russia—have not changed since the UN's beginning in 1945. They are the only members to hold veto (否决) power. The General Assembly has agreed to begin talks no later than February 28, 2009, about expanding the membership of the UNSC.In response to questions from journalists, Brockmann said that this session will examine climate change, unequal access to water, terrorism and human rights, nuclear control and disarmament (裁军), the ongoing situation in Palestine, humanitarian assistance, and race equality."What is important now is that we look to the future, learning from our past mistakes, and together carry wholeheartedly on the task of building a new and better world. I am aware of the great expectations that the vast majority of the inhabitants of our threatened planet have placed in the United Nations to bring them peace and security, and to defend their right to life and to full development," said Brockmann. "We must not fail them."1. What topic does the second paragraph mainly discuss?A. World food crisis.B. UN office expenses.C. Less developed agriculture.D. Conflicts between countries.2.
