外国语学院大学外语教学部2009年8月2009级《大学英语》分级考试试卷Part I. Reading Comprehension (40%)Directions:Read the following passages and choose the best answer to each of the questions or incomplete statements following the passage. You must read the four choicesmarked A, B, C and D, and decide which is the best answer. Then mark thecorresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.(2’×20)Passage 1Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage. It has been a widespread belief that the American family is dying. But a new study reveals that the American family is stronger than ever. This study affords surprising evidence of the persistence of American commitments to family life. The American family is changing, not dying. It is becoming smaller, men and women are becoming more equal, and the divorce rate is higher. But despite the high divorce rate, marriage has never been more popular. The majority of divorced people remarry, but only 2% marry more than twice. Most marriages last a long time, and a large proportion of divorces are from teenage marriages. Depending on the specific situation, there’s often good reason for teenage marriages to break up.There is no evidence that children receive less attention from mothers who work outside the home than from mothers working inside the home. So far the amount of educational or development time hasn’t varied very much, whether or not the mother works outside the home. In fact, working mothers try to make up for it by setting aside time only for their children. The study shows that television is by far the most significant new childcare arrangement of this century. The most important activity for children up to age 14 is watching television.School is the second most time-consuming activity for children. They spend an average of about 19 hours a week in school. A larger proportion of children go to school earlier than ever before, and they stay in school longer. Another big change is that the proportion of very young children in daycare centers (日托站) has almost doubled in recent years. Compared with these two dramatic changes in child activity, the changes caused by mothers working outside the home appear very small.1 The main idea of this article is that _______.A. the American family is dyingB. young people today don’t want to get marriedC. the American family is changing, but it is stronger than everD. education has resulted in dramatic changes in the American family2 Which of the following statements is NOT true?A. Marriage is more popular than before.B. Many divorced people remarry.C. The majority of marriages last long.D. Working mothers devote less time to their children.3 The author of this article believes that ________.A. the American family is here to stayB. children should not watch so much televisionC. mothers should not work when their children are smallD. teenage marriages should be encouraged4 What is the most significant new childcare arrangement of this century?A. The daycare center.B. Television.C. The school.D. Development time.5 According to the writer, which two major factors have led to the belief that the Americanfamily is dying?A. The divorce rate is high and working mothers neglect their children.B. The divorce rate is high and children care more about television than anything else.C. Divorces are increasing and many teenage marriages break up.D. Children stay in school longer and mothers have little time to take care of them. Passage 2Questions 6 to 10 are based on the following passage. What you give your relatives, friends, husband, or wife can help you know yourself better. Also, what they give you can tell you something about their personality. Most gift-giving (and getting) shows nothing more than the spirit of love and friendship. But it is possible to form some associations between the kinds of things bought and the people who buy them. Here is a guide to who gives you wha t --- and why.The clothes you wear tell something about your personality. They tell the world not only how you want to be seen but how you see yourself as well. When someone gives you something to wear that agrees with your self-image, they’re saying, “I agree with you. I like you the way you are.” Such a gift should be taken as a form of compliment. On the other hand, a gift of clothing that does not match your personality could be an insult to your character.Making something by hand has become the exception in many countries toda y-so much so that giving a homemade gift is sometimes considered unusual. If you receive a homemade gift, you’re lucky. It may not be made perfectly, but it will show a certain quality of love. People who give homemade gifts may be said to be very generous. They are given time and emotion, two important characteristics of being creative.A person who thinks of food when thinking of a gift is good example of what human warmth means. Whether you give a box of chocolates, a bag of oranges, or a ball of cheese, all carry the same message of comfort and support.People who give books as gifts either like reading or would like everyone to think they do. If you happen to receive a large, heavy book, this giver may be much more interested in the way things appear than in the way they actually are. Of course, reading is a way of feeling the emotions of another person and of learning new things. Giving a book can be a way of sharing a feeling or a newly learned meaning. The giver is probably trying to say to you what the book said to him.6 The first paragraph is written to tell readers that ________.A. the gifts you give can help you understand yourself betterB. the gifts you receive are helpful for you to know the personality of those who give themC. gifts can show friendship and loveD. there is a certain relationship between the kinds of gifts and the people who give them7 A person who likes the self-image of another person will give the latter ________.A. clothesB. a homemade giftC. a gift that agrees with the personality of the receiverD. a gift that matches the character of the giver8 Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?A. What you wear can tell something about your personality.B. Homemade gifts are not welcomed in some countries.C. People who give books as gifts either like reading or would like everyone to think they do.D. Reading books given to you as gifts can be a way of sharing a feeling with the giver.9 If you give a large, heavy book as a gift, it may show that _________.A. you are knowledgeableB. the receiver is interested in readingC. you dislike readingD. you are more interested in the appearance of the book than in its contents10 People who want to show their love towards others often give _______.A. homemade giftsB. delicious foodC. expensive clothesD. interesting booksPassage 3Questions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage. My love of nature goes right back to my childhood, to the times when I stayed on my grandparent’s farm in Suffolk. I think it was my grandmother who encouraged me more than anyone: she taught me the names of wildflowers and got me interested in looking at the countryside, so it seemed obvious to go on to do zoology at university.I did n’t get my first camera until after I’d graduated, when I was due to go diving in Norway and needed a method of recording the sea creatures I would find there. My father didn’t know anything about photography, but he bought me an Exacta, which was really quite a good camera for the time, and I went off to take my first pictures of sea starfish. I became keen very quickly, and I learnt how to develop and print.I’ve tried from the beginning to produce pictures which are always biologically correct. There ar e people who will alter things deliberately: you don’t pick up sea creatures from the middle of the shore and take them down to attractive pools at the bottom of the shore without knowing you’re doing it.There can be a lot of ignorance in people’s behavior towards wild animals and it’s a problem that more and more people are going to wild places: while some animals may get used to cars, they won’t get used to people suddenly rushing up to them. The sheer pressure of people, coupled with the fact that there are increasingly few places where no one else has photographed, means that over the years, life has become much more difficult for the professional wildlife photographers.Nevertheless, wildlife photographers play a very important part in educating people about what is out there and what needs conserving. Although photography can be an enjoyable pastime, as it is to many people, it is also something that plays a very important part in educating young and old alike.11 The author decided to go to university and study zoology because _______________.A. she wanted to improve her life in the countrysideB. she was persuaded to do so by her grandmotherC. she was keen on the natural worldD. she wanted to stop moving around all the time12 How is the author different from some of the other wildlife photographers she meets?A. She tries to make her photographs as attractive as possible.B. She takes photographs which record accurate natural conditions.C. She likes to photograph plants as well as wildlife.D. She knows the best places to find wildlife.13 The author now finds it more difficult to photograph wild animals because ______________.A. there are fewer of themB. they have become more nervous of peopleC. it is harder to find suitable placesD. they have become frightened of cars14 According to the author, wildlife photography is important because it can make people realizethat ___________________.A. photography is an enjoyable hobbyB. we learn little about wildlife at schoolC. it is worthwhile visiting the countrysideD. it is important to look after wild animals15 Which of the following describes the author?A. Proud.B. Sensitive.C. Aggressive.D. It is convenient: three or four words per exchange. It takes cleverness, concentration and quick fingers. And it requires very simple language. There’s neither time nor space for explanations. Why waste precious key-strokes telling six friends you have to leave for a moment to take care of your little brother when BRB(= be right back) will do?Want to enter a conversation? Just type PMFJI (= pardon me for jumping in).Interested in whom you’re talking to? Type A/S/L, the common request to know your pal’s age, sex and location. You may get 15/M/NY as a reply from your pal.If something makes you laugh, say you’re OTF (= on the floor), or LOL (= laughing out loud), or join the two into ROTFL (= rolling on the floor laughing). And when it’s time to get back to work or go to bed, you type GTG (= got to go) or TTYL (= talk to you later).People want to write as fast as possible, and they want to get their ideas across as quickly as they can. Capital letters are left in the dust, except when expressing feelings, as it takes more time to hold down the “shift” key and use capitals. Punctuation is going, too.16 When people are online, they talk by_____.A. using body language.B. drawing some strange picturesC. making phone callsD. making use of an especially short form of English17 Internet makes many people in the world ______.A. talk at the same timeB. discover their friends and relativesC. pick out good things to buyD. find out about some problems in society18 The underlined sentence “There’s neither time nor space for explanation”(L.1, para. 4)means that _____.A. people should use words properlyB. people should know what time it is when they are talkingC. people online have to express themselves in a simple wayD. people should communicate in a funny way19 If you get 19/M/HK as an answer to your A/S/L, it means ______.A. the person who is talking to you is 19 from Hong Kong and he is highB. you are talking to a boy 19 years old and he lives in Hong KongC. you are talking to 19 boys from Hong Kong at the same timeD. the boy from Hong Kong has been online for 19 minutes20 Which of the following is a way to save online time?A. Passage OneAnimation means making things which are lifeless come alive and move. From earliest times, people have always been fascinated by movement , but not until this century have we managed to capture movement,to record it, and in the case of animation,to reinterpret it and recreate it. To do all this, we use a movie camera and a projector. In the world of cartoon animation, nothing is impossible. You can make the characters you create do exactly what you want them.A famous early cartoon character was Felix the Cat, created by Pat Sullivan in America in the early nineteen twenties.Felix was a marvelous cat. He could do all sorts of things no natural cat could do like taking off his tail, using it as a handle and then putting it back. Most of the great early animators lived and worked in America, the home of the moving picture industry. The famous Walt Disney cartoon characters came to life after 1928.Popeye the Sailorman and his girl friend Olive Oyl were born at the Max Fleischer studios in 1933.But to be an animator, you don’t have to be a professional. It is possible for anyone to make a simple animated film without using a camera at all.All you have to do is draw directly on to blank film and then run the film through a projector.1. What's the main topic of the passage?A. American history.B. Cartoon making.C. Movement.D. Walt Disney cartoon characters were born earlier than Pat Sullivan'sC. animation means making things lifelessD. the cartoon industry started in the United States5.Which of the following statements best describes the author's attitude towards cartoon making?A. It's interesting but hard to do.B. We need professional to instruct us.C. It takes a lot of time to draw on to blank films.D. It's an easy job.Everyone can do it.Passage TwoTelevision was not invented by any one person. Nor did it spring into being overnight. It evolved gradually, over along period, from the ideas of many people一each one building on the work of their predecessors. The process began in 1873,when it was accidentally discovered that the electrical resistance of the element selenium(硒)varied in proportion to the intensity of the light shining on it. Scientists quickly recognized that this provided a way of transforming light variations into electrical signals. Almost immediately a number of schemes were proposed for sending pictures by wire(it was, of course, before radio). One of the earliest of these schemes wan patterned on the human eye. Sugested by G.R.Carey in 1875, it envisioned a mosaic of selenium cells on which the picture to be transmitted would be focused by a lens system. At the receiving end there would be a similarly arranged mosaic made up of electric lights. Each selenium cell would be connected by an individual wire to the similarly placed light in the receiving mosaic.Light falling on the selenium cell would reproduce the original picture. Had the necessary amplifiers(放大器、扩音器)and the right kind of lights been available, this system would have worked. But it also would have required an impractical number of connecting wires.Carey recognized this and proposed to "scan" the cells一transmitting the signal from each cell to its associated light, in turn, over a single wire.If this were done fast enough, the retentive power of the eye would cause the resultant(合成的)image to be seen as a complete picture.6.Which of the following is the best title for the passage?A. Television in the Electronic EraB. First Steps in the Invention of TelevisionC.The Art of TelevisionD. Harmful Effects of Television Viewing7.In Paragraph 1,the word "being" could best be replaced by_.A. placeB. creatureC. subsistenceD. existence8.An important discovery in early television was the electrical resistance of___.A. mosaicsB. the human eyeC. lensesD. the element selenium9. In 1875,Carey suggested that the human eye envisioned a mosaic of selenium cells on which the picture to be transmitted would be focused by_.A. wireB. electric lightsC. a lens systemD. amplifiers10. Following are the reasons why the first scheme for television was abandoned EXCEPT_.A. he lacks an effective assistantB. the necessary amplifiers were unavailableC. the proper lights were unavailableD. the number of connecting wires is impracticalPassage ThreeThe greatest recent social changes have been in the lives of women.During the twentieth century there was a remarkable shortening of the proportion of a woman’s life spent in caring for children.A woman marrying at the end of the nineteenth century would probably have been in her middle twenties, and would be likely to have seven or eight children, of whom four or five lived till they were five years old.By the time the youngest was fifteen, the mother would have been in her early fifties and would expect to live a further twenty years, during which custom, opportunity and health made it unusual for her to get paid work. Today women marry younger and have fewer children.Usually a woman’s youngest child will be fifteen when she is forty-five years and is likely to take paid work until retirement at sixty.Even while she has the care of children, her work is lightened by household appliances and convenience foods. This important change in women's life pattern has only recently begun to have its full effect on women's economic position. Even a few years ago most girls left school at the first opportunity, and most of them took a full-time job. However when they married, they usually left work at once and never returned to it. Today the school-leaving age is sixteen, many girls stay at school after that age, and though women tend to marry younger, more married women stay at work at least until shortly before their first child is born.Very many more afterwards return to ful1-time or part-time work.Such changes have led to a new relationship in marriage, with the husband accepting a greater share of the duties and satisfactions of family life and with both husband and wife sharing more equally in providing the money, and running the home, according to the abilities and interests of each of them.11 .It‘s probably now that women_.A. marry men younger than themselvesB. do not do houseworkC. do not want to give birth to childrenD. provide the money to the family like her husband12.For women at the twentieth century, the amount of time spent caring for children_.A. was shorter than in previous centuriesB. was longer than in previous centuriesC. was considered to be surprisingly longD. accounted for a great part of their lives13.We are told that, in an average family about 1900_.A. many children died before they were fiveB. seven or eight children lived to be more than fiveC. the youngest child would be fifteenD. four of five children died when they were five14.When she was over fifty, the late nineteenth century mother_.A. was unlikely to find a job even if she wanted oneB. would not expect to workC. was very healthy and beautifulD. was considered to have a rest at home15.One reason why the woman of today may take a job is that she_.A. is younger when her children are still youngB. does not like caring for childrenC. need not worry about food for her childrenD. is younger when her children are old enough to look after themselvesPassage FourThe rise of tourist traffic has brought the relatively recent phenomenon of the tourist attraction pure and simple. It often has no purpose but to attract in the interest of the owner or of the nation. As we might expect, this use of the word "attraction" as "a thing or feature which ‘draws’people, especially any in teresting or amusing exhibition" dates only from about 1862.It is a new species:the most attenuated form of a nation’s culture. All over the world now we find these "attractions"一of little significance for the inward life of a people, but wonderfully saleable as tourist commodities. Examples are Madam Tussaud’s exhibition of wax figures in London(she first became known for her modeled heads of the leaders and victims of the French Revolution)and the Tiger Balm Gardens in Hong Kong;Disneyland in California一the American "attraction” which tourist Khrushchev most wanted to see 一is the example to end all examples. Here indeed Nature imitates Art. The visitor to Disneyland encounters not the two-dimensional comic strip of movie originals, but only their three-dimensional facsimiles.Tourist attractions serve their purpose best when they are pseudo-events.To be repeatable at will, they must be factitious.Emphasis on the artificial comes from the ruthless truthfulness of tourist agents. What they can real]y guarantee you are not spontaneous cultural products but only those made especially for tourist consumption, for foreign cash customers. Not only in Mexico City and Montreal, but also in the remote Guatemalan tourist Mecca of Chichecastenango and in far-off villages of Japan, earnest honest natives embellish their ancient rites, change, enlarge, and spectacularize their festivals, so that tourists will not be disappointed. In order to satisfy theexaggerated expectations of tour agents and tourists, people everywhere obligingly become dishonest mimics of themselves. To provide a full schedule of events at the best seasons and at convenient hours, they travesty their most solemn rituals, holidays, and folk celebrations all for the benefit of the tourists.16.Which of the following can be concluded from the first paragraph?A. These tourist attractions do not appeal to the local people spiritually.B. Disneyland is no longer a typical example of tourist attractions.C. Both tourists and local people are equally drawn by these tourist attractions.D. Madam Tussaud’s exhibition is not one of saleable tourist commodities.17."Nature imitates Art" means that____.A. Art is two-dimensional and Nature is three-dimensional.B. Disney created a two-dimensional art formC. the facsimiles are three-dimensionalD. Disneyland is a life-like copy of the original film cartoons18.To be repeatable at will, a tourist attraction must be_.A. artificial B.attractive C. fictitious D. facetious19.The locals all over the world_in order to satisfy the traveling agents and tourists.A. make their festivals more materialB. adorn and exaggerate their traditional ceremoniesC. change into dishonest tourist attractionsD. decorate their villages for the tourists20. The word "travesty" (Para. 2)probably means_.A. scornB. distortC. make ridiculousD. change greatlyPassage FiveIcebergs are among nature’s most spectacular creations, and yet most people have never seen one. A vague air of mystery envelops them. They come into being-somewhere-in faraway, line frigid waters, amid thunderous noise and splashing turbulence, which in most cases no one hears or sees. They exist only a short time and then slowly away just as unnoticed.Objects of sheerest beauty, they have been called. Appearing in an endless variety of shapes, they may be dazzlingly white, or they may be glassy blue, green, or purple, tinted faintly or in darker hues. They are graceful, stately, inspiring in calm, sunlit seas.。

Word Bank 1W hen we think of green buildings, we tend to think of new ones –the kind of high-tech, solar-paneled masterpieces that make the covers of architecture magazines. But the U.S. has more than 100 million existing homes, and it would be 47 wasteful to tear them all down and48 t hem with greener versions. An enormous amount of energy and resources went into the construction of those houses. And it would take an average of 65 years for the49 carbon emissions from a new energy-efficient home to make up for the resources lost by destroying an old one. So in the broadest50 , the greenest home is the one that has already been built. But at the same time, nearly half of U. S. carbon emissions come from heating, cooling and51 our homes, offices and other buildings. "Y ou can't deal with climate change without dealing with existing buildings," says Richard Moe, the president of the National Trust. With some52 , the oldest homes tend to be the least energy-efficient. Houses built before 1939 use about 50% more energy per square foot than those built after 2000, mainly due to the tiny cracks and gaps that 53 over time and let in more outside air. Fortunately, there are a54 number of relatively simple changes that can green older homes, from 55 ones like Lincoln's Cottage to your own postwar home. And efficiency upgrades (升级) can save more than just the earth; they can help56 property owners from rising power costs.A) accommodations I) protectB) clumsy J) reducedC) doubtfully K) replaceD) exceptions L) senseE) expand M) shiftedF) historic N) supplyingG) incredibly O) vastH) poweringWord Bank 2For many environmentalists, the world seems to be getting worse. They have developed a hit-list of our main fears: natural resources are 47 out; the population is ever growing, leaving less and less to eat; species are becoming 48 in vast numbers, and the planet's air and water are becoming ever more polluted. But a quick look at the facts shows a different picture. First, energy and other natural resources have become more 49 not less so, since the book ‘The Limits to Growth' was published in 1972 by a group of scientists. Second, more food is now produced per 50 of the world's population than at any time in history. Fewer people are 51 . Third, although species are indeed becoming extinct, only about 0.7% of them are expected to disappear in the next 50 years, not25~50%, as has so often been 52 . And finally, most forms of environmental pollution either appear to have been 53 , or are transient - associated with the early stages of industrialization and therefore best cured not by restricting economic growth, but by 54 it. One form of pollution - the release of greenhouse gases that causes global warming - does appear to be a phenomenon that isgoing to extend well into our future, but its total impact is unlikely to 55 a devastating (令人心神不安的) problem. A bigger problem may well turn out to be an inappropriate response to it.Yet opinion polls suggest that many people nurture the belief that environmental standards are declining and some factors seem to cause this disjunction between 56 and reality.A) pose B) exaggerated C) accelerating D) extinct E) existF) perception G) wealthy H) magnified I) starving J) headK) running L) predicted M) abundant N) conception O) reducingWord Bank 3Videoconferencing is nothing more than a television set or PC monitor with a camera Through the videocenferencing, not only your voice but also your face, the surroundings and any other graphic and phisical __1__ can be captured and transmitted through the communication system with or without wires.
