The 19th century marked an historical period in Hawaii. Thousands of immigrants from different countries came to the islands seeking work. Over 50,000 Chinese immigrants brought their customs, cultural activities and especially their ethnic foods.
Zong zi is the most popular Chinese food in Hawaii.Zong zi and the dragon boat festival commemorate the death of Qu Yuan. He is a beloved, patriotic, Chinese poet who lived around 300 BC. Making zong zi needs skills and time. Chinese like eating as well as making zong zi.
In 1883, the first Chinese restaurant in Hawaii’s Chinatown had opened. In honor of the Lunar New Year, this restaurant had made the first zong zi. Since then, Hawaiian is addicted with zong zi. Now, most of Hawaiian can make zong zi by themselves. In daily life, Hawaiian likes making zong zi with their family. The way of making zong zi is similar between Hawaiian and Chinese. We always clean the leaves and grass. Soak the sticky rice and jujubes for three hours. Fold the leaves into a funnel and add rice and some jujubes until the funnel is full. Fold the open side down to cover the top of the funnel. At last, place the
zongzi in boiling water, and boil for three hours. After that we can taste delicious zong zi.
