A Walk In The Woods I was puzzled! Why was this old woman making such a fuss about an old copse which was of no use to anybody? She had written letters to the local paper, even to a national, protesting about a projected by-pass to her village, and, looking at a map, the route was nowhere near where she lived and it wasn't as if the area was attractive. I was more than puzzled, I was intrigued. The enquiry into the route of the new by-pass to the village was due to take place shortly, and I wanted to know what it was that motiv ated her. So it was that I found myself knocking on a cottage door, being received by Mary Smith and then being taken for a walk to the woods."I've always loved this place", she said, "it has a lot of memories for me, and for others. We all used it. They called it 'Lovers lane'. It's not much of a lane, and it doesn't go anywhere importan t, but that's why we all came here. To be away from people, to be by ourselves " she added. It was indeed pleasant that day and the songs of many birds could be heard. Squirrels gazed from the branches, quite bold in their movements, obviously few people passed this way and they had nothing to fear. I could imagine the noise of vehicles passing through these peaceful woods when the by-pass was built, so I felt that she probably had something there but as I hold strong opinions about the needs of the com munity over-riding the opinions of private individuals, I said nothing. The village was quite a dangerous place because of the traffic especially for old people and children, their safety was more important to me than an old woman's whims."Take this tree", she said pausing after a short while. "To you it is just that, a tree. Not unlike many others here". She gently touched the bark. "Look here, under this branch, what can you see?""It looks as if someone has done a bit of carving with a knife" I said after a cursory inspection."Yes, that's what it is!" she said softly. "There are letters and a lover's heart".I looked again, this time more carefully. The heart was still there and there was a suggestion of an arrow through it. The letters on one side were indi stinct, but on the other an 'R' was clearly visible with what looked like an 'I' after it. "Some budding romance?" I asked, "did you know who they were?""Oh yes, I knew them", said Mary Smith, "it says RH loves MS".I realised that I could be getting out of my depth, and longed to be in my office, away from here and this old lady, snug, and with a mug of tea in my hand. She went on …"He had a penknife with a spike for getting stones fro m a horse's hoof, and I helped him to carve my initials. We were very much in love, but he was going away, and could not tell me what he was involved in the army. I had guessed of course. It was the last evening we ever spent together, because he went away the next day, back to his Unit. "Mary Smith was quiet for a while, then she sobbed. "His mother showed me the telegram. 'Sergeant R Holmes ….. Killed in action in the 9)invasion of France'"."'I had hoped that you and Robin would one day get married" she said, "He was my only child, and I would have loved to be a Granny, they would have been such lovely babies'- she was like that! ""Two years later she too was dead. 'Pneumonia, following a chill on the chest' was what the doctor said, but I think it was an old fashioned broken heart. A child would have helped both of us."There was a further pause. Mary Smith gently caressed the wounded tree, just as she would have caressed him. "And now they want to take our tree away from me." Another quiet sob, then she turned to me. "I was young and pre tty then, I could have had anybody, I wasn't always the old woman you see here now. I had everything I wanted in life, a lovely man, health and a f uture to look forwards to".She paused again and looked around. The bre eze gently moved through the leaves with a sighing sound. "There were others, of course, but not a patch on my Robin!" she said strongly. "And now I have nothing - except the memories this tree holds. If only I could get my hands on that awful man who writes in the paper about the value of the road they are going to build where we are standing now, I would tell him. Has he never loved, has he never lived, does he not know anything about memories? We were not the only ones, you know, I still meet some who came here as Robin and I did. Yes, I would tell him!"I turned away, sick at heart.
5 balls(英语学习)妈妈再严格还是妈妈,对吗?------------------------------------------Dad was going to be in charge. It happened a lot nowadays, because Kitty’s Mum’s new job meant that sometimes she had to work on Saturdays. Once they got used to it,Kitty and Daniel didn’t mind. They always had fun with Dad.This Saturday morning, Mum said, “There’s plenty of salad in the fridge for lunch, and I want you to eat it up.”The children groaned.“Rabbit food,” said Daniel.“I don’t want to eat silly, slimy salad,” said Kitty.“Can’t we have something else” they moaned. But Mum had become very keen on really healthy eating. She said, “It’s good for you all - but if you want something hot to go with it, Dad cancook you some rice. But remember, NO bis cuits. They’re bad for your teeth.”They groaned even more loudly. But Mum took no notice, and left.Dad said, “Better do as we’re told, kids.”Kitty stuck out her teeth, held two fingers above her head like ears and hopped around. “I’ll turn into a bunny if I eat any more lettuce, Dad!” she said.He laughed, and sent them out into the garden to play while he did the washing up.The morning passed quickly. Daniel and Kitty played hide-and-seek with William and Sally, the children next door, until heavy clouds made the sky dark.“It’s going to rain,” said Sally. “Come in for a snack.”Her mother gave them a plate of chocolate biscuits to share, and glasses of lemonade. Daniel winked at Kitty. As lunch-time came near they decided they should go home. It had stopped raining, but the air was damp and cold. “Lovely weather for salad,” Kitty groaned. They were surprised to see a strange man sitting at the kitchen table with Dad. They each had a glass of beer. Dad looked very pleased. He told the children this was a very old friend he hadn’t seen for years. The man, whose name was Bill, was big and jolly. He looked at his watch, “Well, if your lady-wife isn’t coming home, why don’t we all go down the road and get fish and chips”The children jumped up and down, screaming with delight, and clapping their hands.Dad looked at them, then at the fridge door, then at his watch. “We-ell...”“Oh, come on!” said Bill.“You’d better promise not to tell your Mum,” said Dad.“We won’t!” yelled Kitty.Twenty minutes later they were all walking down the road, munching(咀嚼) delicious fish and chips with their fingers. When they got back to the house Bill took cans of fizzy(嘶嘶作响的) drink from his pockets, which made a perfect end to the meal (使这顿饭有了一个完美的尾声). The children were sorry when he had to go.“Oh, dear,” said Dad, looking at empty cans on the kitchen table. “We’d better clear up. Mum will be back in half an hour.”When Mum’s key turned in the lock, Dad and Daniel were watching a film on television, and Kitty was wheeling Mr Tubs up and down the hall on her old baby tricycle.Mum kissed her. “Hello, love, have you had a lovely day”Kitty nodded. She started to feel a bit guilty.“And it wasn’t so bad to have salad for lunch, was it” asked Mum.Kitty looked at her and went red. It was no good. She couldn’t tell lies - that would be terrible. So she told Mum what had happened.“Aha-he did, did he” said Mum, folding her arms, a little smile showing at the corner of her mouth. She marched into the sitting room.“Well, was it good, having a salad of fish and chips” she asked standing in between Dad and the TV.Dad looked really guilty. He looked at Kitty, and she could almost hear him thinking, “But you promised you wouldn’t tell.”“Don’t be angry with me, Dad,” she said.At that, a big smile broke across Mum’s face. “Look at you all!” she said. “Like frightened rabbits! You have been eating too many greens. Well, I went to the market to get a special treat for tonight’s supper, and I met Bill - which was a lovely surprise. And he told me about your lunch.”“And you don’t mind” asked Dad.“Of course not. I’m not a witch, you know! Didn’t I say I’m making something you like for supper”“What is it, Mum” asked Kitty.“Fish and chips!” said Mum.“Oh, no!” they all groaned. And then they started to laugh.。
As a lover of sports, I have always been fascinated by the beauty of a perfectly round sphere the ball.

The flying balloon is a fascinating object that has captured the imaginations of people for centuries. Itsability to float effortlessly through the air has inspired dreams of flight and exploration, and it has been used in everything from military reconnaissance to scientific research. The basic principle behind the flying balloon is simple: it is filled with a gas that is lighter than air, such as helium or hydrogen. This gas creates a buoyant force that lifts the balloon up into the air. The amount of lift depends on the density of the gas, the volume of the balloon, and the weight of the payload. The earliest known flying balloons were made in Chinain the 3rd century BC. These balloons were made of paperand filled with hot air. They were used as signalingdevices and for entertainment. In the 18th century, the Montgolfier brothers in France developed the first hot air balloons capable of carrying humans. These balloons were used for scientific research and exploration, and they quickly became a popular form of entertainment. In the 19th century, the development of lighter-than-air gases such as helium and hydrogen led to the development of modern balloons. These balloons were usedfor a variety of purposes, including military reconnaissance, weather forecasting, and scientific research. Today, balloons are still used for a variety of purposes, including advertising, decoration, and recreation. Here are some of the different types of flying balloons:Hot air balloons: These balloons are filled with hot air, which creates a buoyant force that lifts the balloonup into the air.Gas balloons: These balloons are filled with a gasthat is lighter than air, such as helium or hydrogen.Rozières balloons: These balloons are a hybrid of hot air balloons and gas balloons. They are filled with bothhot air and a lighter-than-air gas.Solar balloons: These balloons are filled with helium and have a solar panel attached to the outside. The solar panel generates electricity, which is used to power a fan that keeps the balloon inflated.Flying balloons are a versatile and fascinating technology that has been used for a variety of purposes throughout history. They continue to be used today for a variety of purposes, including advertising, decoration, and recreation.

If the Dream is Big EnoughI used to watch her from my kitchen window, she seemed so small as she muscled her way through the crowd of boys on the playground. The school was across the street from my home and I would often watch the kids as they played during recess. A sea of children, and yet to me, she stood out from them.I remembered the first day I saw her playing basketbal. I saw her playing basketball.I watched in wonder as she ran circles around the other kids. She managed to shoot jump shots just over their heads and into the net. The boys always tried to stop her but no one could.I beagan to notice her at other times, basketball in hand, playing alone. She would practice dribbling and shooting over and over again, sometimes until dark. One dayI asked her why she practiced so much. She looked directly in my eyes and withouta moment of hesitation she said,” I want to go to college. The only way I can go is if I get a scholarship. I like basketball. I decided that if I were good enough, I would get a scholarship. I am going to play college basketball. I want to be the best. My Daddy told me if the dream is big enough, the facts don’t count.” Then she smiled and ran towards the court to recap the routine I had seen over and over again.Well, I had to give it to her─ she was determined. I watched her through those junior high years and into high school. Every week, she led her varisity team to victory. One day in her senior year, I saw her sitting in the grass, head cradled in her arms.I walked across the street and sat down in the cool grass beside her. Quietly I asked what was wrong. “Oh, nothing,” came a soft reply. “ I am just too short.” The coach told her that at 5’5” she would probably never get to play for a top ranked team─much less offered a scholarship─so she should stop dreaming about college. She was heartbroken and I felt my own throat tighten as I sensed her disappointment.I asked her if she had talked to her dad about it yet.She lifted her head from her hands and told me that her father said those coaches were wrong. They just did not understand the power of a dream. He told her that if she really wanted a scholarship, that nothing could stop her except one thing ─ her owen attitude. He told her again,” If the dream is big enough, the facts don’t count.”The next year, as she and her team went to the Northern California Championship game, she was seen by a college recruiter. She was indeed offered a scholarship, a full ride, to a Division I, NCAA women’ s basketball team. She was going t o get the college education that she had dreamed of and worked toward for all those years. It’s true: If the dream is big enough, the facts don’t count.

Title: The Shape of a Sphere: A Descriptive Essay。
The sphere, a simple yet captivating shape, possesses a unique allure that has fascinated humanity for centuries. Its flawless symmetry and mathematical precision make it a subject of intrigue across various fields, from geometry to art and beyond. In this essay, we delve into the intricate beauty of the sphere, exploring its form, significance, and relevance in our world.First and foremost, let us consider the physical attributes of a sphere. Defined as a perfectly round geometrical object in three-dimensional space, the sphere boasts a surface where every point is equidistant from the center. This uniform distance gives rise to its characteristic symmetry, with no corners, edges, or irregularities to disrupt its smooth curvature. Picture a flawless marble or a perfectly round ball, and you have captured the essence of a sphere's shape. Moreover, the sphere's shape holds profound significance in the natural world. It is prevalent in celestial bodies, such as planets and stars, where gravitational forces mold matter into spherical forms. The Earth itself, despite minor deviations, approximates a sphere, symbolizing stability, harmony, and unity. Furthermore, droplets of water suspended in space adopt spherical shapes due to surface tension, illustrating the sphere's prevalence even at the microcosmic level. In addition to its physical manifestations, the sphere carries symbolic weight in human culture and imagination. Across diverse civilizations, it has represented concepts of completeness, wholeness, and infinity. Ancient philosophers revered the sphere as a symbol of the cosmos, reflecting the harmonious order of the universe.
