I loved the countryside and the pubs, and I loved London. I've slightly changed my mind after seventeen years because I think it's an ugly town now. Things have changed. For everybody, England meant gentlemen, fair play, and good manners. The fair play is going, unfortunately, and so are the gentlemanly attitudes and good manners-people shut doors heavily in your face and politeness is disappearing. I regret that there are so few comfortable meeting places. You're forced to live indoors. In Paris I go out much more, to restaurants and nightclubs. To meet friends here it usually has to be in a pub, and it can be difficult to go there alone as a woman. The cafes are not terribly nice. As a woman, I feel unsafe here. I spend a bomb on taxis because I will not take public transport after 10 p. m. I used to use it, but now I'm afraid. The idea of family seems to be more or less non-existent in England. My family is well united and that's typically French. In Middlesex I had a neighbour who is 82 now. His family only lived two miles away, but I took him to France for Christmas once because hewas always alone. 41. The writer doesn't like London because she ______. A. is not used to the life there now B. has lived there for seventeen years C. prefers to live in an old-fashioned house D. has to be polite to everyone she meets there 42. Where do people usually meet their friends in England? A. In a cafe. B. In a restaurant. C. In a nightclub.D. In a pub. 43. The underlined part “it” (in Para. 4) refers to______. A. a taxi B. the money C. a bomb D. public transport 44. The writer took her neighbour to France for Christmas because he______. Why would humans evolve(进化) a21 that puts us at a social disadvantage by 22 us to reveal that we have cheated or lied?Charles Darwin pointed out that 23 all people of all races blush, animals do not. When it came to explaining the reason, he was 24 a loss. That has not stopped others from trying. One 25 is that blushing started out as a way to show we obey authoritative members of the group. Later, as our social interactions became 26 complex, it became involved with higher, self-conscious 27 such as guilt, shame and embarrassment. This would seem to put individuals ata disadvantage, but blushing might actually make a person more 28 or socially desirable.29 that women blush more than men,one university researcher suggests that blushing might have evolved as a way for women to 30 their honesty to men so as to win their support in raising children. Some zoologists also think blushing could have emerged as a way to foster trust. " If you were to go hunting 31 a stone-faced partner, you could never 32 what he wants. “he says.Once blushing became 33 with embarrassment, anyone who did not blush might have been at a disadvantage because we are 34 likely to trust someone who appears never to feel 35 about anything.21. On Midsummer's Eve, which was a Saturday, Mr. Jones went into Willington and got so drunk at the Red Lion that he did not come back until midday on Sunday. His men had milked the cows in the early morning and then had gone out chatting without bothering to feed the animals. When Mr. Jones got back, he immediately went to sleep on the living-room sofa with the "News of the World" over his face. When evening came, the animals were still not fed. At last, they could stand no longer. One of the cows broke into the door of the storehouse with her horns and all the animals began to help themselves to the grains. It was just then that Mr. Jones woke up. The next moment he and his four men were in the storehouse with whips in their hands, whipping in all directions. This was more than the hungry animals would bear. Together, though nothing of the kind had been planned beforehand, they jumped upon their masters. Mr. Jones and his men suddenly found themselves being struck with the horns and kicked from all sides. The situation was quite out of their control. They had never seen these animals act like this before. This sudden rebellion of the creatures, which they were used to beating and whipping just as they chose, frightened them. After only a moment or two, they gave up trying to defend themselves. As the net was pulled over, the contents poured out followed by excited cries of "Coins! Coins!" The fishermen quickly realized they had realized a fisherman's dream: sunken treasure! And not just any treasure, but early American silver dollars thathad gone down 210 years earlier. In 1784, at the end of the American Revolutionary War, a heavily armed ship was bound for the port of New Orleans. On board was a fortune in Spanish Silver Dollars. Hundreds of thousands of them were loaded for the trip to New Orleans, yet not a single one arrived. With no survivors from the ill-fated voyage, historians can only guess at what happened. Some say powerful storms took her down while others speculate it was treasure-hungry pirates(海盗). Whatever happened, the secret-along with a treasure valued near $100,000,000 in today' s dollars-was sent to a watery grave some 300 feet below the ocean's surface.Spanish Silver Dollars were the favorite coins of colonial Americans. Widely used and accepted as payment in the thirteen colonies, the United States government gave them the status of official legal tender. Unfortunately, even though they were struck in large quantities, not many of them survive today. After the Civil War, the government withdrew them from circulation and they were melted down.Due to the historic discovery of this treasure, GovMint . com is releasing these coins to the public for an amazingly low price. For a limited time, those authentic silver dollars are priced at $49 plus shipping and handling—a dramatic reduction from the market price of this coin anywhere else worldwide.40. To examine this conclusion, two researchers "decorated" three rooms: One room was refurnished to look ugly. The second room was intended to look average. The third room was designed to be beautiful. Individuals were then asked to sit in one of the three rooms and rate several pictures of people's faces. The results indicated that the environment has a significant effect on the way people rated the faces. Subjects in the beautiful room gave the pictures higher rates than did subjects in the ugly room. In addition, subjects in the ugly room found the task more unpleasant and boring than did subjects in the beautiful room. Subjects assigned to the ugly room attempted to leave sooner than did subjects assigned to the beautiful room.Color is one environmental factor that can affect your mood and even your ability to concentrate. One researcher concluded that the most pleasant colors, listed in order of preference, were blue, green, purple, red and yellow. The colors listed from most to least arousing were red, orange, yellow, violet, blue, and green.Lighting also affects behavior. Elegant restaurants with dim lighting create a mood of intimacy(亲密)that encourages conversation. The bright lights of an office or classroom, on the other hand, arouse and stimulate thinking.Room decoration, color, lighting, and even music and temperature all influence communication with others; but there is no all-purpose environment. The ideal environment depends on the task that will be performed as well as on the needs and expectations of those present. The same environmental factors that encourage lively conversation and dancing at a New Year's Eve party cannot be expected to create a serene climate in which to study for final exams.44. Patients receiving joint implants(移植)often are able to resume many of the physical activities they love, even those as vigorous as tennis and hiking. No wonder, then, that joint replacement is growing in popularity. In the United States in 2007, surgeons performed about 806, 000 hip and knee implants (the joints most commonly replaced), double the number performed a decade earlier. Though these procedures have become routine, they are not failure free.Implants must sometimes be replaced, said Dr. Henrik Malchau , an orthopaedic surgeon (矫形外科医生) at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. A study published in 2007 found that 7 percent of hips implanted in Medicare patients had to be replaced within seven and a half years. The percentage may sound low, but the finding suggests that thousands of hip patients eventually require a second operation, said Dr. Malchau. Those patients must endure additional recoveries, often painful, and increased medical expenses. The failure rate should be lower, many experts-agree. Sweden, for instance, has a failure rate estimated to be a third of that in the United States. Sweden also has a national joint replacement registry, a database of information from which surgeons can learn how and why certain procedures go wrong. A registry also helps surgeons learn quickly whether a specific type of implant is particularly problematic. "Every country that has developed a registry has been able to reduce failure ratesSignificantly," said Dr. Daniel Berry, chief of orthopaedic surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.A newly formed American Joint Replacement Registry will begin gathering data from hospitals in the next 12 to 18 months. It's good news for those who are considering replacing a knee or hip.48. What is the problem with hip or knee replacements in the U. S. ?A. A lot of patients need a second operation.B. Doctors are not well trained to ensure successful operations.C. Demands for hip replacement exceed the number of surgeons.D. Replacement operation is becoming too expensive in U. S. hospitals.49. In 1897 Curtis began to revive (重振) the Post on the proposition that a man's chief interest in life is the fight for .livelihood-business. Fiction and articles about romantic business and successful businessmen filled its pages, and products backed by .its advertisements directed at the needs and desires of the business world. The general interest weekly reached new audiences. Its conservative viewpoint and strong admiration for material success appealed to the tastes of the millions who settled in an easy chair with it each Thursday evening. As a more commercial, mass-circulation magazine than The New Yorker, the widely readable Post set out to interpret America to itself. As a national and international institution, The Saturday Evening Post made its mark in the lives of massive numbers of men and women, and served society as a stabilizing influence. Its editorial matter addressed the problems and interests of the readers as never before. Neither highbrow nor lowbrow, the Post set out to interpret average middle-class America, for that was its audience. However, this magazine lost touch with the mood of the American people in the 1930s. The Post's editor Lorimer, opposed Roosevelt and the New Deal and changed his magazine from an organ of entertainment and enlightenment into a weapon of political warfare. He believed that in opposing the New Deal he had spoken for the majority of voters, but the 1936 election proved him wrong. His conservatism extended beyond politics, it dominated the m agazine’s content and style causing a decline in reputation and authority. The Post met its greatest success when it went beyond the tastes of the masses, challenging its readers to acknowledge the genius of contributors such as F. Scott Fitzgerald and William Faulkner. It was later reformed in an effort to fulfill its responsibility to awaken lethargic(昏昏欲睡的)America, however, The Saturday Evening Post seemed to play toconventions while The New Yorker took off to redefine the character of American Humor.52. According to Paragraph 1, who are primarily the readers of the Post?A. Businessmen.B. College students.C. Housewives.D. Politicians.53. What is the earliest time that readers can read the Post every week?A. Monday.B. Thursday.C. Saturday.D. Sunday.54. Why did the Post lose much of its audience in the 1930's?A. It failed to absorb sufficient advertisements.55. What makes the Post so commercially successful?A. Presenting American style humor.B. Sticking to the tastes of the middle class.C. Her right leg wasespecially damaged, and doctors cut it off above the knee. When she was 14,she got a high-tech leg made for sportsand put it to the test right away in a race for disabled athletes. “I remember being terrified because this was my firsttime,’’ she says. “But my doctor said,‘You have to start somewhere. ’ ”Scout was waiting nervously for the race to start when athlete Sarah Reinertsen came up and said,“I’ve beendoing this for a while. There is nothing new about people losing their patience while stuckin traffic or waiting in line. But some experts believe that people are less patient today than in the past. Some analysts suggest that in recent years many people are less patient because of technology. They suggest that"digital technology, from cellphones to e-mails to iPads, is changing our lives. The instant results we get from thistechnology have in turn increased our appetite for instant satisfaction in other aspects of our lives."Psychologist Jennifer Hartstein makes some observations. She explains that “we have become animmediate satisfaction culture, and we expect things to move quickly, efficiently and in the way we want. When thatdoesn7t happen, we tend to become increasingly frustrated and unsatisfied. “Some believe that e-mail is losing popularity and could soon become outdated. Why? Because many people whosend messages do not have the patience to wait hours, or even minutes, for a response. Also, with e-mails, as withletter writing, introductory and concluding greetings are often expected. But many people consider suchformalities(客套)to be boring and time-consuming. They prefer instant messaging. Many people do not take the timeto proofread what they put in writing. As a result, letters and e-mails contain numerous grammatical andtypographical errors. The thirst for immediate results is not limited to the realm of digital communications. People seem to be losingtheir ability to wait in other areas of life. For instance, do you ever find yourself talking too fast, eating too fast, driving too fast, or spending money too fast? The few moments it takes to wait for an elevator to come, for a trafficlight to change, or for a computer to start may seem like too long a time.21. According to the first paragraph,people______ .A. were more patient in the pastB. have been patient for a long timeC. used to be patient while stuck in trafficD. used to be patient while waiting in line22. Nowadays people lose their patience because .______A. their desire for satisfaction has increasedB. they are bored with what they haveC. they have more things to do than beforeD. their life has been changed by technology23. Some believe that e-mail could soon become outdated because_______ .A. it takes a long time to start the computerB. people value formalities between friendsC. people can hardly wait for a responseD. cellphones are more popular nowadays24. The pursuit of instant results causes people to __.A. become more impoliteB. have more errors in their writingsC. use voice messages instead of emailsD. lose many of their abilities in life25. The best title for the passage might be “”A. What Are the Problems Caused by Impatience?B. Are We Less Patient Today?C. What Happened to Technology?D. Has Digital Technology Changed Our Lives?Passage ThreeScientists measured the impact that people have on the environment using a term called carbon “footprint. ” Thatfootprint reflects the amount of carbon dioxide that is emitted(排放)into the atmosphere as a result of someone’sdaily activities. Carbon footprints tend to be low for city dwellers(城镇居民). Living in a suburb outside a city, however, can turn that footprint into a bootprint.Energy researchers Christopher Jones and Daniel Kammen calculated carbon footprints for people in every zipcode across the United States. People living in city centers had small footprints, the researchers found. ,lIt is mucheasier to have a low carbon impact if your home is close to where you work, shop and play,” explains Jones. Livingwithin walking or biking distance cuts back on the amount of carbon dioxide associated with moving people by cars. And cities with extensive bus and subway networks allow people to travel great distances while keeping releases ofclimate-altering greenhouse gases low.Not everyone can afford to live in the city, however. And not everyone wants to. Rings of suburbs have popped uparound major cities across the world. Suburbs offer more space, allowing people to build larger homes. Suburbs mayoffer better schools for a family?s kids. But those homes are typically well beyond walking distance from where theirowners work, play or learn. So people who live in suburbs often drive long distances. The new findings are an important contribution to climate research, says Matthew Kahn,an environmentaleconomist at the University of California, who was not involved with the study. Kahn would like to see the analysisapplied to other parts of the world—Europe, India and China, for instance. That would give scientists a better feel forhow culture might mix with location to influence our carbon footprints.26. “Footprint” refers to the amount of carbon dioxide released by.A. an industryB. an individualC. a regionD. a country27. What is the new finding concerning the footprints of people living in cities and those living in suburbs?A. The two are not at all comparable.B. The former are higher than the latter.C. The latter are higher than the former.D. The former are similar to the latter.28. What is the key factor mentioned to explain the new "findings?A. Distance travelled by cars.B. Spending habits.C. Size of families.D. Attitude towards energy saving.29. What does Matthew Kahn think of the new findings?A. He is confused by the mixed messages.B. He thinks highly of them.C. He can easily understand them.D. He doubts their validity.30. What is the purpose of the author in writing the passage?A. To call on people to reduce carbon footprints.B. In this city, Roman rulers built monuments which are famous, then and now, for their sweeping mosaics(镶嵌图案). Seven of Ravenna’s eight buildings from the 5 th and 6th centuries are spectacularly decorated with examples of this ancient art. “ In the past, many people couldn’t read or write, “ says tour guide and Ravenna native Silvia Giogoli. “Mosaics were a way to explain the religion and the political situation to the people. “Visitors to Ravenna can look at pieces of art by ancient artists, listen to musicians, and learn to make their own masterpieces. That is his way of saying that he loves you. And, if you pay attention, you will see that he uses his tail to say so many things. Every movement of the tail means a different thing. If the dog is wagging its tail, it is a sign of friendliness: if his tail is straight, it means he is getting ready for a fight: and if his tail is tucked(塞)behind his legs, it means he is giving up the fight. Unlike dogs, cats’ tail language is not so expressive. When a cat feels threatened, he puffs himself up to appear big and his tail shakes with tension. And when he is displeased with something, he lashes out(甩动)his tail. The tail language of dogs and cats has a little story behind it. Earlier, when dogs and cats had not become friends with human beings, they were predators. They used to hunt other animals for their food. When dogs went out hunting with their friends, tail language came handy. When they were close to each other, dogs could use facial expressions to talk. But, for long-distance communication, they used their tails. Unlike dogs, cats liked to hunt alone. So, they did not need to use tail language too often. As a result, their vocabulary in tail language is much smaller than that of dogs’.25.What does it mean when a dog’s tail is straight?A.It has a lot to say to you.B.It wants to stop fighting.C.It is going to fight.D.It likes to be patted.正确答案:C26.A cat tries to appear big when it is______.A.facing a dangerB.unhappyC.ready to huntD.hungry正确答案:A27.Which of the following does the author intend to say?A.Dogs and cats are not good friends.B.Dogs are much friendlier than cats.C.Dogs and cats are usually good pets.D.Dogs use tail language more than cats.正确答案:D28.In the last paragraph, the underlined word “predators” refers to______.A.animals that follow and obey other animalsB.animals that kill and eat other animalsC.animals that live in the wildD.animals kept by people正确答案:BLike any teenagers, the face of One Teen Story is changing fast. Just a year old, the monthly magazine of short fiction for young people is getting a new editor-in-chief:Patrick Ryan, 47 , the associate editor of Granta from 2009 to 2013. He left the London-based literary journal last month. Editing One Teen Story—the younger sibling(姊妹篇)of One Story magazine—will offer Ryan a chance to reach a whole new audience. “It’s really the only magazine for young adult short fiction, “ he says from his office in New York. “ It’s tremendously exciting that there are younger people out there who have subscriptions and look forward to getting these stories once a month. That form is usually only presented when it’s forced upon them in schools. “Designed for readers 14 and up, One Teen Story publishes nine issues a year. Like its sibling magazine, it doesn’t carry photographs or advertising. It’s just exactly what it says: one story per issue. Ryan says young people are “looking for engaging reads about people whom they can identify with. It’s not about having a message or positive spin(说教). It always starts on a character level, and it has to have an interesting story. If you look at the ‘ Twilight’ characters and the ‘ Harry Potter’characters, they feel very contemporary. “Ryan also sees the magazine as a way to encourage talented authors. “I would love to make One Teen Story the first publication for writers who then go on and keep at this business. I just really love the idea that this magazine would be the starting point for somebody—would be the push to make a talented writer feel that it was worth keeping at this. “29.Who is Patrick Ryan?A.He is the editor-in-chief of Granta.B.He is the editor-in-chief of One Story.C.He is the editor-in-chief of “Twilight”.D.He is the editor-in-chief of One Teen Story.正确答案:D30.What is One Teen Story?A.It is a story magazine for teenagers.B.It is a London-based literary journal.C.It is a column of a newspaper.D.It is a magazine of science fiction.正确答案:A31.According to Ryan, what attracts young readers most?A.Photographs and illustration.B.Chances and practices in business.C.Characters and stories close to their life.D.Political teachings and moral messages.正确答案:C32.In the last paragraph, the underlined phrase “this business” means______.A.reading storiesB.writing storiesC.editing magazinesD.making money正确答案:BCouples are restricting the size of their families in the UK because of cash worries brought on by the financial crisis and the subsequent decline. We’re now up to nearly 3. 7 million families where there is an only child, a rise from about 3. 3 million in 2005. That means nearly half of all parents have only one child. Financial worries aren’t the only driver. The trend towards later motherhood has been mentioned as a cause, as have soaring costs of raising a child, which have been calculated as £222, 500 from birth to 21 years of age. This is an increase of nearly 40% in 10 years. The increasing availability of IVF(试管婴儿)is also a factor and an interesting one. Couples who might have remained childless in the past now invest in IVF and get pregnant. And because of the cost they stop after one child. It may not be a bad thing: there are outstanding examples of talented only children. Some argue that being an only child promoted their success. These include actors Natalie Portman and Al Paci-no, golfer Tiger Woods and even Queen Victoria. A study from the Institute for Social and Economic Research at the University of Essex also showedthat the fewer brothers and sisters a child has, the happier they are. It seems fighting for parental attention and affection—which sometimes descends into physical fights —is more stressful than any adult had previously thought. And it’s not compensated(弥补)by having a playmate.33.The smaller size of UK families is mainly related to______.A.financial problemsB.technical problemsC.health problemsD.cultural problems正确答案:A34.The passage shows that IVF is______.A.safer than natural pregnancyB.very popular in UKC.very expensiveD.a risky investment正确答案:C35.What is a proved advantage of one-child family?A.Improved family life.B.Higher number of sports stars.C.Efficient family education.D.Promotion of children’s success.正确答案:D36.The findings of the institute at the University of Essex might mean that______.A.the only children’s lack of playmates causes problemsB.the only children are much happier than othersC.parents-children relationship is off balanceD.children have to struggle for parental love正确答案:BAbout 79 million Americans have pre-diabetes(糖尿病前期). That means they have blood sugar that’s higher than normal but not high enough to be diagnosed(诊断)with type 2—at least not yet. One long-term study reported by the American Diabetes Association found that 11 % of people with pre-diabetes develop the full-blown disease each year. Another study shows that pre-diabetes will probablybecome type 2 in 10 years or less. Yet, that process is not inevitable. Last year, scientists in Colorado found that people with pre-diabetes who lowered their blood sugar to normal levels—even briefly—were 56% less likely to reach type 2 levels. If you have pre-diabetes, here are four steps to help prevent or delay a diabetes diagnosis: Lose 7% of your body weight. That is about 15 pounds for the persons who weigh 200. Dropping that small percentage has been shown to lower the risk of developing type 2 by close to 60%. Exercise 30 minutes five days a week. Whether you do the 30 minutes in one shot or in three 10-minute sessions, the benefit is the same. Choose certain exercises, such as fast walking, playing tennis or lifting weights. Physical activity such as sweeping floors works, too. Turn to your doctor. In some cases, pre-diabetes raises the risk of heart disease and stroke by 50%. Your doctor may use some medicine to control your glucose(葡萄糖)levels and keep your blood pressure in check. Know your numbers. To see if your pre-diabetes is improving, have your blood sugar checked regularly. A fasting blood sugar of 100 to 125 mg/dl suggests pre-diabetes: 126 mg/dl or above is diabetes: and below 100 is normal. Other tests, including glucose tolerance and AIC, also are used to monitor blood sugar.37.What do we learn from the two studies mentioned in Paragraph 1?A.Pre-diabetes will surely become type 2 diabetes.B.Pre-diabetes is likely to become diabetes within years.C.Enough attention should be paid to the treatment of type 2.D.Pre-diabetes is ranked No. 1 danger threatening Americans’ health.正确答案:B38.To prevent or delay a diabetes diagnosis, people with pre-diabetes should pay most attention to______.A.glucose levelsB.exercisesC.heart diseaseD.stroke正确答案:A39.Which of the following suggests that you have pre-diabetes?A.70 mg/dl.B.90 mg/dl.C.110 mg/dl.D.130 mg/dl.正确答案:C40.What column of a newspaper is most likely to have this article?A.Technology.B.Entertainment.C.Education.D.Health.正确答案:DPart IV ClozeDirections: There are some blanks in the following passages. In this city. Roman rulers built monuments which are famous, then and now, for their sweeping mosaics(镶嵌图案). Seven of Ravenna’s eight buildings from the 5th and 6th centuries are spectacularly decorated with examples of this ancient art. “in the past, many people couldn’t read or write.”says tour guide and Ravenna native Silvia Giogoli. “Mosaics were a way to explain the religion and the political situation to the people.”Visitors to Ravenna can look at pieces of art by ancient artists, listen to musicians, and learn to make their own masterpieces.Travel TipsWhen to Go:June—October;weather is pleasant in April and May but historic sites can get crowded with shool groups.Where to Stay: Walk through historic district sites from Albergo Cappello and stay at a modern Hotel Centrale Byron. How to Get Around: Take the train from Bologna, and then walk, bike, or use taxis within the city.Where to Eat or Drink: Housed in a former movie theater, two-story Ristorante Cinema Alexander blends 1940s Hollywood flavor with homemade Emilia Romagna courses and attentive service(helpful in translating the menu). For fresh seafood, try Osteria L’Accigua and Da Buco. What to Buy: Watch the next generation of Emilia Romagna mosaic artists create contemporary and traditional pieces in local studios where modern artists use the same methods as their Byzantine forefathers. What to Read Before you Go: Ravenna in Late Antiquity, by Deborah Mauskopf Deliyannis(2010), provides a wide-ranging look at the city’s art, architecture, and history.( )36. And, if you pay attention, you will see that he uses his tail to say so many things. Every movement of the tail means a different thing. If the dog is wagging its tail, it is a sign of friendliness; if his tail is straight, it means he is getting ready for a fight; and if his tail is tucked (塞)behind his legs, it means he is giving up the fight.Unlike dogs, cats’ tail language is not so expressive. As a result, their vocabulary in tail language is much smaller than that of dogs’ .( )40. What does it mean when a dog’s tail is straight?A. It has a lot to say to you.B. It wants to stop fighting.C. It is going to fight.D. It likes to be patted.( )41. A cat tries to appear big when it is .A. facing a dangerB. unhappyC. ready to huntD. hungry( )42. Just a year olk, the monthly magazine of short fiction for young people is getting a new editor-in-chief: Patrick Ryan, 47, the associate editor of Granta from 2009 to 2013. He left the London-based literary journal last month.Editing One Teen Story- the younger sibling(姊妹篇)of One Story magazine-will offer Ryan a chance to reach a whole new audience. “It’s really the only magazine for young aduit short fiction,”he says from his office in New York. “It’s tremendously exciting that there are younger people out there who have subscriptions and look forward to getting these stories once a month. That form is usually only presented when it’s forced upon them in schools.”Designed for readers 14 and up, One Teen Story publishes nine issues a year. Like its sibling magazine, it doesn’t carry photographs or advertising. It’s just exactly what it says:one story perissue.Ryan says young people are “looking for engaging reads about people whom they can identify with. It’s not about having a message or positive spin(说教). It always start on a character level, and it has to have an interesting story. If you look at the ‘Twilight’ characters and the ‘Harry Potter’ characters, they feel very contemporary.”Ryan also sees the magazine as a way to encourage talented authors. “ I would love th make One Teen Story the first publication for writers who then go on and keep at this business. I just really love the idea that this magazine would be the starting point for somebody –would be the push to make a talented writer feel that it was worth keeping at this.”( )44. In the last paragraph, the underlined phrase “this business” means .A. reading stories.B. writing storiesC. editing magazinesD. making moneyPassage FourCouples are restricting the size of their families in the UK because of cash worries brought on by the financial crisis and the subsequent decline. We’re now up to nearly million families where there is an only child, a rise from about million in 2005. That means nearly half of all parents have only one child.Financial worries aren’t the only driver. The trend towards later motherbood has been mentioned as a cause, as have soaring casts of raising a child, which have been calculated as $222,500 from birth to 21 years of age. This is an increase of nearly 40% in 10 years. The increasing availability of IVF(试管婴儿)is also a factor and an interesting one. Couples who might have remained childless in the past now invest in IVF and get pregnant. And because of the cost they stop after one child. It may not be a bad thing; there are outstanding examples of talented only children. Some argue that being an only child promoted their success. These include actors Natalie Portman and AI Pacino, golfer. Tiger Woods and even Queen Victoria. A study from the Institute for Social and Economic Research at the University of Essex also showed that the fewer brothers and sisters a child has, the happier they are. It seems fighting for parental attention and affection-which sometimes descends into physical fights-is mor stressful than any adult had previously thought. And it’s not compensated(弥补)by having a playmate.( )48. The smaller size of UK families is mainly related to .A. financial problemsB. technical problemsC. health problemsD. cultural problems( )49. The passage shows that IVF is .A. safer than natural pregnancyB. very popular in UKC. very expensiveD. a risky investment( )50. What is a proved advantage of one-child family?A. Part Ⅰ Reading Comprehension(共20小题,每小题2分,共40分)Directions: In this part there are four passages. Each passage is followed by four comprehension questions. Read the passage and answer the questions. Then mark your answer on the answer sheet.Passage OneQuestions l~5 are besed on the following passage.Under proper conditions, sound waves will be reflected from a hillside or other such obstruction. Sound travels at the rate of about one-fifth of a mile per sccond. If the hill is eleven hundred feet away, it takes two seconds for the sound to travel to the hill and back. Thus, by timing the interval between a sound and its reflection (the echo), you can estimate the distance to an obstruction.During World War Ⅱ the British used a practical application of this principle to detect German planes on their way to bomb London long before the enemy was near the target. They used radio waves instead of sound waves, since radio wavcs can penetrate fog and clouds. The outnumbered Royal Air Force( RAF) always seemed to the puzzled Germans to by lying in wait at the right time and never to be surprised. It was radio echoes more than anything else that won the Battle of Britain.Since the radio waves were used to tell the direction in which to send the RAF planes and the distance to send them (their range of flight, in other words), the device was called“radio directing and ranging”, and from the initials the word “radar”was coined.l. Sound waves reflected from a hill can be used to estimate the .A. height of the hillB. speed of soundC. distance to the hillD. intensity of sound2. Practical application of this principle resulted in .A. new electronic instruments for planesB. a radio directing and ranging deviceC. new radio sets for RAF bombersD. an electronic detecting device3. Radar enabled the English to .A. detect German planes on their way to LondonB. direct the outnumbered RAF planes effectivelyC. confuse German bomber pilotsD. both A and B4. It can be inferred from the passage that .A. Light waves could be used in a device similar to radarB. Radar was a practical application of a well-known principleC. Radar greatly increased the effectiveness of the Royal Air ForceD. Sound waves are reflected from a hillside under all conditions5. The author of this passage probably intended to explain .A. exactly how radar worksB. why the British used radio waves in their deviceC. how radar (word and device) came into beingD. how radar helped the British win the Battle of BritainPassage TwoQuestions 6~10 are based on the following passage. In general, the ancient Romans were a practicai people. They cared less about philosophy and pure mathematics than the Greeks did. The Romans were the best of the ancient engineers and architects. They were brilliant students of Greek geometry and trigonometry(三角学), and they applied their knowledge to the construction of fine bridges, roads, aqueducts(渠道) , and public buildings. They knew about the smelting of iron ore, but they used the iron they produced mainly for spears, swords, and shields, rather than for building construction. While the Romans accomplished practical wonders, they did very little theoretical scientific thinking. Because of their frequent wars, many of their inventions were no more than improvements in the design of Greek weapons with which they were familiar. There are two reasons for the Roman neglect of philosophy and pure mathematics.First, they were apparently too busy conquering nearby nations and forming them into a rapidly growing empire to waste much time on abstract thinking. Secondly, they were handicapped(妨碍) by the rigidity of their numerical system. (Try to multiply XI by LVII or to divide CXLIII by IX;it simply cannot be done with pencil and paper.)The Romans did all of their arithmetic on an abacus, the ancient counterpart of the modern computing machine.Their number system discouraged the study of pure mathematics.6. The author calls the Romans "practicat" because they .A. cared little about philosophyB. applied their knowledge to constructionC. saw the necessity for developing theoretical scienceD. studied the past and learned from it7. The ancient Romans did not concern themselves with .A. theoretical or abstract thoughtB. applied mathematicsC. studyingD. either A or C8. In construction, the Romans made extensive use of .A. iron oreB. geometry and trigonometryC. Greek mathematical thoughtD. both B and C9. Many Roman inventions were based on Greek weapons because the .A.Greeks had superior weaponsB. Romans were involved in frequent warsC. Romans were not familiar with many types of weaponsD. Greeks proved themselves inspired inventors10. The author of this passage probably wanted to explain why .A. he considers the Romans a practical peopleB. Roman architects and engineers were the best in ancient timesC. theoretical thinking is necessary for the growth of a nationD. the Romans contributed little to philosophical thoughtPassage ThreeQuestions 11~15 are based on the following passage.Professor Barry Wellman of the University of Toronto in Canada has inventeda term to describe the way many North Americans interact these days. The term is “networked individualism.”This concept is not easy to understand because the wordsseem to have opposite meanings. How can we be individuals and be networked at thesame time? You need other people for networks. Here is what Professor Wellman means. Before the invention of the Internetand e-mail, our social networks involved live interactions with relatives, neighbors, and colleagues at work. Some of the interaction was by phone, but it was still voiceto voice, person to person, in real time.A recent research study by the Pew Internet and American Life Project showedthat for a lot of people, electronic interaction through the computer has replacedthis person-to-person interaction. However, a lot of people interviewed for the Pewstudy say that's a good thing. Why?In the past, many people were worried that the Internet isolated us and causedus to spend too much time in the imaginary world of the computer. But the Pew studydiscovered that the opposite is true. The Internet connects us with MORE real peoplethan expected-helpful people who can give advice on careers, medical problems, raising children, and choosing a school or college.About 60 millionAmericans told Pew that the Internet plays an important role in helping them makemajor life decisions. Thanks to the computer,“networked individuals”are able to be alone and togetherwith other people-at the same time!11. The Pew study was conducted in .A. The United StatesB. CanadaC. The U. S. and CanadaD. Europe12. In this article,a network is a group of connected .A. radio or TV stationsB. peopleC. computersD. roads13. Before the invention of the Internet, our connections with people took place mainly .A. in personB. by phoneC. by letterD. by email14. Which of the following has happened since the invcntion of the Internet and email?A. People are talking on the phone more than ever.B. Interaction through the computer has replaced a lot of person to person interaction.C. Americans are turning into hermits.D. Sixty million Americans have bought computers.15. Which of the following was NOT one of the discoveries of the Pew study?A. The Internet has put us in touch with more people than expected.B. People use the Internet to get advice on careers, medical problems, and other questions.C. For many Americans, the Internet plays an important role in helping them make important decisions.D.“Internet addiction”is a growing problem among people who use computers. And not just any cell phone-the iPhone 3G.According to Asiajin, about 550 students and staff members in the School of Social Informatics at Tokyo-based university Aoyama Gakuin received the iPhone 3G for free as part of their study materials. This is the result of a deal that Aoyama Gakuin signed with SoftBank, the only sales representative of the iPhone in Japan. The number of students using the iPhone is expected to reach about 1,000. This is the first time a particular cell phone has been used on such a huge scale at a Japanese university. The phone will work as a study tool for students. As it comes with the global positioning system (GPS), the university plans to use it to check student attendance. Dropping classes is a big problem in Japan, where regular attendance is an important factor in determining a student's grade. Students often fake attendance by getting classmates to answer roll calls. Now,with the iPhone 3G,the school plans to keep better tabs on (监控) its students. Students are allowed to use the phone for attendance reporting (but only if they are actually in the classroom, a fact that will be proved by the phone's GPS),lecture podcasting, and online examinations. A student can't answer the roll cal using the phone from any location other than the classroom.Students can, of course, still cheat the new system by leaving their phones with fellow classmates, but this is not very likely to happen, as people tend to keep a lot of private information on their phones that they don't want to share with others. As for calling and data plans, the university covers the basic fee. The hardware itself is free, but students will have to pay when they exceed downloading limits.6.
