INTRODUCTIONThe possibilities offered by the use of Internet in teaching activities are increasingly important. However, the physical presence of students in laboratories is required when the subject has a practical component, and this makes distance learning more difficult. Virtual laboratories can be used to overcome this situation.We have built a virtual network laboratory for distance learning of IP networking concepts such as IP addressing, routing tables,address resolution between IP and Ethernet, and the combined use of IPv4 and IPv6. Students access the virtual laboratory through a web interface and can change the network configuration by choosing one of the available preset configurations. Then, using Linux network commands, they can learn about these configurations and how to test the network.The virtual network laboratory is a private IP over an Ethernet network. It consists of several PCs (with one or more Ethernet cards) connected through a configurable Ethernet switch. One ofthese PCs, which is connected to the Internet, runs the web server and performs the different network configurations upon receiving a student’s request.The paper is organized as follows. In section 2 we describe the user interface of the virtual laboratory and some examples of lab classes to show how it can be used. Section 3 deals with the implementation of the virtual laboratory, the composition of the physical network and the remote configuration method used for the switch and for IPv4 and IPv6 in the PCs. Conclusions and future work conclude the paper.2. LEARNING IN THE VIRTUAL LABThe virtual network uses IP over an Ethernet and consists of four nodes. These nodes can be grouped to build IP subnetworks in different topologies, so they act as a host or router depending on the topology. The student can choose between four available topologies (see Figure 1).Our objective was to build a tool whereby remote students could learn the basic concepts of IP networking and related Linux network commands. Section 2.1 describes the user interface and section 2.3 shows some examples of lab classes.2.1 The user interfaceStudents access the virtual laboratory through a web interface after an authentication phase. Then they choose one of the following options, “topologies”, “protocols”, “tunneling”,“commands” or “exit”:-The “topologies” option allows the student to choose one of several network topologies that differ in the number of IP subnetworks (1, 2 or 3) and therefore in the number of routers (see Figure 1).-Using “protocols”, the student can choose to configure each network node either with only IPv4 or with both IPv4 and IPv6. Predefined addresses are assigned to each node.-Using “tunneling”, the student can choose one of several network configurations where some nodes use IPv4 and others IPv6, which have configured the required tunnels to work properly (see Figure 2).-With “commands”, the student can choose any of the nodes of the network and then study how it is configured by using Linux network commands. The student is not allowed to change any configuration parameter, but can test it.2.2 Some examples of lab classesThe basic scheme of a lab class is first to choose one of the network configurations using the appropriate options (“topology”,“protocols”, and “tunneling”), and second, to study it using Linux network commands (“commands” option).A first example is the study of IP addressing and routing tables using the 4th topology in Figure 1 (three subnetworks and one router) with IPv4 in all the nodes. This results in the configuration of IP addresses and the routing table in each node. Then, using the ifconfig command, students can see the IP addressing used, by using route , the contents of the routing table, and by using traceroute , the routing path between two nodes.A second example is the study of the address resolution between IP and Ethernet using the third topology in Figure 1 (three subnetworks and two routers) with IPv4 in all nodes. The use of arp in each node allows the student to see the contents of the ARP (Address Resolution Protocol) table listing IP and Ethernet addresses. Other commands like ping , traceroute , or route , would be also interesting for studying the configuration.The third example is the study of the combined use of IPv4 and IPv6 nodes. Here the chosen topology is the third one in Figure 1,IPv4 in the B and C nodes and IPv4/IPv6 in the A and D nodes.First, no tunnel configuration is selected. Then, students can see that there is no virtual interface created in the A and D nodes by using the ifconfig command, that the routing table is wrong by using route , and that there is no connectivity between the A and D nodes by using ping . After that, the tunnel configuration number 2(see Figure 2) is chosen and the network configuration is tested again to check the right behavior.3. IMPLEMENTATION 3.1 EquipmentThe network of the virtual laboratory consists of four PCs running the Linux operating system (kernel 2.2.12-20, RedHat 6.1distribution) and an Ethernet switch (Cisco Catalyst 2920XL with 24 ports). Each PC has one or more Ethernet cards connected to the switch as shown in Figure 3. It is a private network that is accessed from the Internet through the node A, which has two Ethernet cards, one connected to the private network and the other to the Internet. Node A does not forward packets from or to the private network and the Internet.The Ethernet switch is used to build the subnetworks of each topology. The different groups are isolated, i.e. the switch does not provide connectivity between two nodes that belong to different groups of ports. In this way, “virtual” Ethernet subnetworks are built, as if the nodes of each subnetwork were physically connected to different Ethernet switches. The groups of ports for creating the third topology (see Figure 1) are shown in Figure 3.3.2The remote configurationThe remote configuration of the PCs and the Ethernet switch is made through a web server (Apache release 1.3.9 [1]) running in node A. Using a CGI (Common Gateway Interface), the web server executes different UNIX scripts files. In turn these scripts execute a Telnet client that connects to the Telnet server running in the target device (PC or switch), and then executes the necessary commands to configure it. The script files use the expect scripts language [2] that allows CGIs to interact with the Telnet client, so an interpreter of this language needs to be installed in node A. This is the usual method for the configuration. The next sections focus on the configuration of the switch and the nodes.3.3The switch configuration and topologies The four different network topologies (see Figure 1) are built by configuring the (virtual) subnetworks in the switch. The number of subnetworks varies from one to three, as does the number of hosts that belong to a subnetwork. Note that only one of the two interfaces of node A can belong to the different network topologies, while the other interface is always connected to the Internet.The switch configuration is made via Telnet by using some specific commands [4] for assigning ports to (virtual) subnetworks. As explained in section 3.2, this is carried out by expect scripts files, which use these commands for each configuration. An example file is shown in Figure 4. First a Telnet session is initiated and then the commands for assigning ports to subnetworks are executed.3.4IPv4 and IPv6 in the nodesThe user can choose a topology and the IP protocol version for each node, i.e. only IPv4 or both IPv4 and IPv6 (there are no only IPv6 nodes). IPv4 is the default option. According to the selected option and topology, a predefined IP address (IPv4 and/or IPv6) is assigned to each network interface of the node depending on the subnetwork it belongs to. The corresponding routing table of the node is then configured. Moreover, nodes with interfaces in different subnetworks act as IP routers, so packet forwarding must be enabled in them.Linux systems configure network aspects at the boot time by executing several UNIX scripts files and using the information written in several configuration files [3]. All nodes are dual, i.e. both IP versions are installed on them. In order to configure IPv6, we have added some specific UNIX script files and configuration files [5], which are the equivalents to the installed files for IPv4. The configuration files for IPv4 are the following: ifcfg-eth0, for information about the Ethernet interface 0, such as the assigned IPv4 address (and the corresponding files for each interface); the file static-routes, for adding static routes to the routing table; the file network, for enabling or disabling networking and forwarding; the file hosts, with the table that relates DNS names and IP addresses. Network configuration is made at the boot time by executing the script network.The configuration files for IPv6 are the following: network-ip6, for enabling or disabling networking and forwarding, and also for defining the files names where there is the information about the interfaces, the routing and the tunnels; the file network-ip6.conf (or the file name defined in network-ip6), for the interfaces (equivalent to ifcfg-ethx files in IPv4) and for the static routes of the routing table (equivalent to the static-route file in IPv4); the file tunnels.conf (or the file name defined in network-ip6) for setting up virtual interfaces that define the IPv6/IPv4 tunnels (see next section); the file hosts, with the table relating Domain Name Services (DNS) names and IPv6 addresses (the same file as in IPv4). Network configuration is performed at the boot time by executing the script network-ip6.init.For each one of the different PCs’ configurations we have created the corresponding specific files. For example, for the file ifcfg-eth0, we have created the files 1.ifcfg-eth0, 2.ifcfg-eth0 and 3.ifcfg-eth0, corresponding to network topologies 1, 2 and 3 respectively, and using IPv4. Remote configuration is performed by replacing these files (e.g., ifcfg-eth0 by 1.ifcfg-eth0), and then enforcing the system to a network reconfiguration (e.g., executing the script network). As explained in section 3.2, this is done through expect scripts via Telnet.3.5IPv4 and IPv6 interconnectionIn order to provide connectivity between IPv6 nodes through a path that involves IPv4 nodes, it is necessary to set up tunnels between them, i.e. IPv6 packets are encapsulated in IPv4 packets and IPv6 addresses are mapped to IPv4 addresses at the sending point [6]. This operation is undone at the receiving point. Tunnels are created between two nodes by configuring a network virtual interface at both ends. The interface encapsulates and sends the packets to a real interface (i.e. eth0), and it is used in the IPv6 routing tables for a specific route. In Figure 2 three examples of tunnels are shown:-In the first one, there are three IPv6 subnetworks and two IPv6 routers. The second subnetwork uses IPv6 over IPv4.A tunnel is created between theB andC routers for therouting path that connects the first and the third subnetworks.-In the second example there is a single IPv6 subnetwork with IPv6 over IPv4. A tunnel is created between the A andD hosts.-In the third example there are three IPv6 subnetworks and two IPv6 routers. The first subnetwork uses IPv6 over IPv4.A tunnel is created between A andB for the routing paththat connects the first subnetwork with the other ones.3.6Remote commands executionOur platform allows the students to execute commands in a remote way at any of the nodes, such as ifconfig, route,and traceroute. These commands are executed in a Telnet session as a non-root user using expect scripts. As mentioned in section 2.1, students can test any configuration parameter but they are not allowed to change them.4.CONCLUSIONS AND FUTURE WORK We have built a virtual network laboratory for learning basic concepts of IP networking and have shown how students can use it. Using a web interface, students can choose one of the available configurations and study them by using (and learning) the main Linux network commands.There are several areas for future work. One is to allow students not only to choose and study predefined configurations, but also to build it on demand. In this way students would create their own topologies, assign IP addresses, and configure the routing tables (graphically and/or through Linux commands).Another interesting possibility is using the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) for configuration of the network laboratory. We are also planning to add an enhanced user management (e.g. session scheduling, the ability of saving the configuration for recovery in a future session), and a network monitor for capturing Ethernet packets in order to study TCP/IP protocols, such as e-mail, web, DNS and others.5.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSThis study was partially supported by the CICYT (Spanish Education Ministry) contract TEL-98-0408-C02-01 and the Acciones Integradas program ref. First of all, we usegrey model to predict the future output of the toll plaza, and compared with the realdata, the average value of the residual value is 0.429. Then we can draw a conclusionthat the throughput performance of the toll plaza is secondary. Next, we use queuingtheory to get the service index of the toll plaza in the light and heavy traffic, and thecellular automaton model is used to consider the changing circumstances of servicelevel, uses regression model to establish a function relation between traffic accidentand four factors. Then, we find that the rate of change has the greatest influence onit and the pavement performance has the least influence . In terms of cost, weconsider the toll plaza land and road construction. And the cost of road constructionis divided into the labor cost and material cost.Next, according to the influence of road geometry on the traffic performance of Toll Plaza, we select the transition curve trajectory model to improve the toll plazatransition, which can also have an improvement on the size and shape of the toll plazaand merge mode.Finally, we do a series of performance studies for our improved toll plaza. First of all, the improvement in the square flow and car flow under the condition of servicelevel are determined respectively through simulation .Next, we draw a conclusion thatthe service performance of the toll plaza is not obvious in small car flow, but there is amarked increase in large flow. Then, due to the fact that the unmanned vehicle coulddeal with a variety of road conditions, it undoubtedly expands our improved optionalscheme. Such as: low value because of the technical indicators to make square construction scale too small and cause the toll plaza opened only few years as the traffic bottleneck, and use the high value on the one hand, because of the technical indicators and make the toll station construction scale is too large, waste a lot of money and resources. 水声信道是影响UANs 性能的重要因素之一, 其复杂特性直接影响着UANs 相关协议的前期设计和评估, 对于协议走向实际应用至关重要。

有别于传统理论模型, Bellhop 水声信道模型通过跟踪射线计算海洋声场, 提供了一种更准确的获得不同海洋环境下信道特性的方法, 但该方法不能直接用于网络仿真。

针对此,文中在目前主流的网络仿真平台NS3上构建了基于Bellhop 的水声信道模型, 将高斯射线模型用于水声网络仿真。

对比结果表明, 该模型能够有效仿真声信号在水下的传播特性, 可为实际UANs 协议开发提供参考。

Unlike traditional theoretical models, the Bellhop underwater acoustic channel model provides a more accurate method to obtain channel characteristics under different oceanic environments by calculating their acoustic fields via ray tracing. However, it cannot be directly applied to network simulation. This paper implemented a Bellhop underwater acoustic channel model based on NS3, the current most popular network simulation platform, and applied the Gaussian ray model to UAN simulation. As well as in the aspect of state-space convergence, and a waiting-sync method for different processes of CPN model in each hierarchy model was proposed, which effectively controlled the state-space scale of the model. Others use full virtualization on an x86machine at the expense of performance.Moreover performance isolation is not an issue at all.Xen tries to overcome these problems by providing a high performance virtual machine monitor with performance isolation.It is important to note that there is a huge difference between a virtual machine and a virtual machine monitor.A virtual machine needs a host operating system whereas a virtual machine monitor runs on bare metal.Clearly,the monitor design can improve the performance significantly in comparison to a conventional virtual machine.To sum up,the major challenges in building a virtual machine are:•Performance isolation:Running applications in one guestOS must not affect the performance of another guestOS.Important resources are:CPU time,memory,and disk bandwidth.•Support for a variety of operating systems:It is important to support general purpose operating systems.Otherwise the majority of potential users won’t use the virtual machine.•Small performance overhead:The virtualization layer should multiplex resources as fast as possible.As already said,there is one drawback when using Xen:The guest operating system has to be modified.Currently there is a port of Linux-2.4,called XenoLinux,available. The Xen virtual machine monitor is used in the XenoServer project[3].There,it is possible for client to rent an instance of a guestOS and to install and run several servers, completely isolated from other servers,administrated by other clients,but running on the same machine,but within another guestOS.The motivation that they have seems to be focused on reducing the complexity of webserver setup and maintainance.In order to achieve performance isolation,Xen uses a similar approach as in the Ex-okernel[4]project.Xen multiplexes hardware resources at the granularity of an entire operating system.This approach also eliminates the problem of QoS crosstalk:It is nearly impossible to account all resource usage of a process.Consider for example complex page replacement algorithms.This paper is structured as follows:(section2)gives an overview of the virtual machine, (section3)explains design details,(section4)discusses several evaluations,and(section 5)sums up the problems and challenges in building a virtual machine,and the design and implementation of Xen.3Figure1:The structure of a machine running the Xen virtual machine monitor.Source[1]. 2OverviewFigure1shows the overall architecture of Xen.Xen is running on the bare machine and therefore has the same basic functionality as an operating system.Moreover,Xen provides a virtualization mechanism for guest operating systems.There is one special guest operating system in Xen.This special guestOS is used to administrate the virtual machine monitor,for example adding and removing operating systems,setting resource usage limits and so on.2.1Design PrinciplesThere are two fundamental design issues:Full virtualization and Paravirtualization.One big advantage of full virtualization is that you can run unmodified operating systems.But there are a number of drawbacks:The x86architecture implies several problems.First,certain supervisor instructions fail silently instead of causing a trap.Since every instruction must be caught by the VMM, this can cause serious problems.Secondly,it is very difficult to virtualize the x86MMU. VMWare’s ESX Server is a virtual machine monitor that solves these problems,but at the cost of performance.The ESX Server dynamically inserts traps into the hosted machine code and uses shadow page tables to virtualize the MMU.This approach is very costly if the guest operating system continuously updates its pages.To bypass these problems, Xen VMM uses paravirtualization.This approach is more effective but the guest operating system has to be modified.By using paravirtualization,each guest operating system is responsible for performing its own paging mechanism.This idea is not new.The Nemesis[5]operating system uses this kind of user-level paging,called self-paging.The4next sections will describe the design in more detail.2.2The Virtual Machine InterfaceThis section presents the internal design of the paravirtualized subsystems:Memory Man-agement,CPU,and Device I/O.2.2.1Memory ManagementVirtualizing memory is a quite challenging task.Again,there are several problems with the x86architecture.The biggest disadvantage is that the x86CPU does not have a software-managed translation lookaside buffer(TLB).A software-managed TLB could easily be virtualized.A tagged TLB would be another useful feature.By tagging entries in the TLB,the hypervisor(VMM)and several guest operating systems can reside in memory without beingflushed out at each context switch.However,the x86CPU neither supports a software managed TLB nor a tagged TLB.This means that TLB misses are serviced automatically and that every context switch requires a complete TLBflush.Xen solves these problems in several ways.TLBflushes are avoided by letting the virtual machine monitor reside at the top of every address space.To avoid the problems implied by the hardware-managed TLB,the developers of Xen made the decision that each guestOS is responsible for allocating and managing the hardware page tables.Imagine,for example, the following situation:A guestOS requires a new page table.First,the guestOS allocates pages from its own memory reservation and registers it with Xen.At that time,each update to the page table,has to be validated by Xen.As a matter of performance,it is possible to batch update requests,in order to limit the number of hypervisor calls.Virtualizing segments is done in a similar fashion.2.2.2CPUThe concepts of protection levels and call gates were pioneered in MULTICS,where they were viewed as protection rings.At level0,wefind the kernel of the operating system, which handles I/O,memory management and other critical matters[6].At level3wefind the user applications,which is the least privileged ring.In Xen,we have three different levels of protection:1.Hypervisor Level.2.Operating System Level.3.Application Level.Normally,an operating system will run in ring0,which is the most privileged level.In Xen,the virtual machine monitor runs in ring0.Guest operating systems have to be modified to run in ring1.Another possibility would be,that the operating system runs as5the highest priority process in user space.But the concept of using three rings worksfine on a x86CPU since there is support for four different protection levels(rings).Every time a guest operating system calls a privileged instruction,a trap occurs and control is given to the hypervisor,the virtual machine monitor.The mechanism works the same way as in a system without an additional protection layer.Special care has to be taken with the page fault handler.Normally the page fault handler would read the faulting address from a privileged register.As said before,an operating system in Xen runs in ring1and does not have privileges to access this register.Hence, Xen copies the exception stack frame on the stack of the guestOS and returns control to the appropriate handler.For all other exceptions it is possible to register a so called fast exception handler with Xen.This exception handler is directly accessable by the processor, without indirecting through Xen.But what about safety?Each handler is validated if the handler’s code does not specify execution in ring0.A problem occurs if the handler itself is not paged into memory.In this case the operating system is simply terminated.2.2.3Device I/OXen provides a simple and clean set of device abstractions.I/O data is transferred via asynchronous buffer descriptor rings.These rings allow efficient data transfer and vali-dation.Moreover Xen supports an asynchronous light-weight event delivery mechanism. Remember the event semantics,that no event is allowed to be lost or ignored.Therefore, Xen stores pending events in a bitmask for each domain.Disabling interrupts by an op-erating system,because of atomic instructions for example,can be achieved by setting a specialflag.This is,from the viewpoint of a guestOS,like disabling interrupts on a real processor.3.2Data TransferHaving an additional layer between the application and the device means additional over-head.Especially,when transferring data from and to a domain the indirection through Xen should be as short as possible.In Xen they decided to use asynchronous buffer rings for event and data delivery.Such buffer rings provide an efficient mechanism to transfer data.The ring is a circular queue that does not contain the data itself.Data can be accessed via descriptors.Figure2shows such a ring.There are four actors in this transfer scheme:•Request producer.7Figure2:The structure of asynchronous I/O rings,used for data transfer between Xen and guest OSes.Source[1].•Request consumer.•Response producer.•Respone consumer.A guestOS acts as a request producer and places requests on the ring.Xen,which is the consumer of these requests,takes them.After servicing these requests,Xen acts as a producer an places the responses on the ring.Finally,the operating system consumes these respones.There is no requirement that the requests have to be serviced in order. Each guestOS gives every request a unique ID.The idea behind this scheme is that Xen can reorder requests.For example,reading from a harddrive is more effective when reading blocks from sectors that are physically adjacent.This reduces the moving of the read head. Moreover,it is a good idea to queue some requests and to make just one hypercall.3.3Subsystem Virtualization3.3.1Domain SchedulingIntuitively,someone would think that a simple round robin scheme would be most desirable. Round Robin is a fair scheduler,that gives each domain afixed number of slices.Nev-ertheless,the currently implementation of Xen uses a scheduling scheme called Borrowed Virtual Time Scheduling(BVT)[7].They have decided to use this scheduler because it is,firstly an universal scheduler,secondly it is work-conserving and thirdly it has a special mechanism for low-latency dispatch.This reduces the effect of virtualization.83.3.2Virtual Address TranslationAs explained in the previous section,virtualizing memory is a very difficult task when using an x86processor.VMWare’s ESX server uses virtual page tables to solve this problem. Virtual page tables are not visible to the memory-management ing this scheme significantly decreases the performance of the system.To paravirtualize the memory will mitigate this problem.In Xen,physical resources are visible to the operating system.Xen is only involved in page table updates.Therefore,Xen has to register guestOS page tables directly with the MMU.The virtual machine monitor has to validate requests(hypercalls) efficiently.This works as follows.Each machine page frame is associated one of the following types.•PD=Page Directory.•PT=Page Table.•LDT=Local Descriptor Table.•GDT=Global Descriptor Table.•RW=writeable.These types are mutually exclusive.For example.a page frame can either be writeable ora page table.In this scheme it is not possible to write a page table.3.3.3Physical MemoryPhysical memory is statically partitioned.Each domain has itsfixed initial memory reser-vation at the time of its creation.This provides a strong isolation.At the time of creation it is possible to define a maximum allowable reservation limit.This means that if the memory preassure within a domain becomes to heavy,the guestOS can reclaim more pages from Xen.Each OS should use as less pages as possible.Pages are given and take via a balloon driver[8].Each guestOS must support this driver.The idea of ballooning is taken from VMWare’s ESX server.It is important to note that Xen has control over the balloon driver.Xen can inflate or deflate the balloon.Figure3shows the basic principle.Inflating the balloon causes increased memory preassure within the guest operating sys-tem’s memory.So the guestOS is forced to use its own memory management algorithms or even be forced to swap pages out to the virtual disk.Similarly,deflating the balloon decreases the memory preassure.Furthermore,each guestOS is responsible for its illusion of continuous memory.This implies that mapping from the physical to hardware address is also done by the guestOS itself by using a simple indexed array.For efficient address translation,Xen’s shared translation array can be used.Each guestOS can read without intervention of Xen.All updates have to be validated.9Figure3:The idea of ballooning.Source[8].3.3.4NetworkEach guestOS can use one or more virtual network interfaces(VIF).To transfer data between an operating system and the network,buffer rings,described earlier,are used. One buffer ring for the transmission,and one buffer ring for the receiving of packets.For example,if a guestOS wants to send a packet it enqueues a buffer descriptor on the ring. The buffer descriptor indicates the packet to send.Xen then only takes the packet header for decisions,concerning certainfiltering rules.The requests from all domains are serviced in a round robin fashion,since this ensures fairness.On the other hand,if Xen receives a packet from the network,it has to copy the packet into the address space of the operating system.Copying data between address spaces is a very expensive operation.In Xen,they used a very efficient transfer mechanism.Every time when Xen wants to copy a packet to an OS it makes an exchange of pages.This means that the guestOS gives one of its free pages and gets the page frame containing the packet.Of course,this requires page-aligned receive buffers.If a guestOS has no free page to exchange then the packet is simply dropped.3.3.5DiskXen offers the abstraction of virtual block devices(VBDs).The control plane software running in Domain0has unlimited access to every device.With this software you can set the ownership and other access control information.Each block device is accessed via the I/O buffer descriptor ring mechanism.As network requests,disk requests are serviced in a round robin fashion.It is useful for an operating system to batch requests.First,only one hypercall is needed and second,Xen can reorder requests.It is also possible for a guestOS to insert reorder barriers.This forces Xen not section presents some performance evaluations.Thefirst subsection shows the rel-ative performance of Xen.Xen is compared to native Linux-2.4,VMWare’s Workstation and User Mode Linux.The reader may wonder why the comparison excludes VMWare’s ESX server.This is because the end-user license agreement dissallows the publication of quantitative performance measurements.So they used VMWare’s Workstation,which is not a virtual machine monitor,meaning that this virtual machine needs a host operating system.It’s clear that the workstation is therefore not as fast as the ESX server.In User-Mode Linux it is possible to run Linux within Linux.4.1Relative PerformanceFor testing Xen certain SPEC suits were used.SPEC stands for Standard Performance Evaluation Cooperation.The SPEC CPU suite includes tests of long running computa-tionally intensive applications.Figure4shows the results.All systems perform about the same.This is mainly because most computation is done in userspace.Another evaluation is made with the Open Source Database Benchmark suite.In the paper they presented the results for online transaction processing.OLTP causes many synchronous disk operations.Here we see a huge difference between Xen and Vmware and UML.Xen performs nearly as well as native Linux.This is mainly because of the paravirtualization.Results are shown to100instances.Again,the SPEC INT2000 test suit was used.Figure6shows this.Note,that the maximum throughput is2.0,because of a dual processor machine.Figure 6illustrates two different configurations:50ms time slice and5ms time slice.Native Linux identifies the processes as compute-bound and schedules them with a50ms slice.If Xen also uses a50ms timeslice it performs nearly as well as native Linux.5Conclusion•Q:What problem does the paper address?Virtualization of a machine and its resources,to support multiple operating systems, that can coexist at the same time.Xen tries to overcome the virtualization problems with the x86architecture.Especially the virtualization of the memory management unit(MMU)and the hardware-managed TLB is a quite difficult task.Another important fact is performance.•Q:How is it different from previous work,if any?Most other approaches to virtualize a machine,like User-Mode Linux or VMWare’s workstation,need an operating system that hosts the virtual machine.And on that virtual machine it is possible to install a virtual operating system.Xen itself is a small operating system,compareable to the microkernel architecture.VMWare’s ESX server uses a similar approach.The main difference to all other systems is that Xen uses the concept of paravirtualization.Hence,operating systems know that they are executed on a virtual machine and not on to100instances of operating systems.To achieve these goals,Xen uses the concept of paravirtalization.Paravirtualization means that the virtual machine is not an exact image of the underlying guestOS,the same as disabling interrupts on the CPU.To install guestOSes and to administrate the machine,Xen uses a special purpose guestOS,running in Domain0.This operating system hosts the control plane soft-13ware.It is possible to set scheduling parameter,accessibility issues,memory size and so on,via this control software.At startup only this special guestOS is loaded.•Q:How does the paper 1. Introduction Internet protocol (IP) traffic is expected to be the dominant traffic type in future telecommunication networks. Labeled optical packet/burst switched (LOBS) networks are considered a promising solution for fast, flexible and reliable forwarding of IP bursts/packets across optical wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) transport networks [1–5]. Moreover, LOBS are compatible with the general multi-protocol label switching (GMPLS) control mechanism [6]. In a LOBS network, bursts of data are composed by assembling several IP packets in the ingress LOBS nodes according to their destination or class of service. To each burst a label, of a short, fixed length, is assigned and used by the core nodes to forward the packet through the network. Therefore, IP/GMPLS is a low latency, low overhead routing technique that simplifies packet forwarding and enables scaling to terabit rates. Several techniques have been proposed to label optical packets or burst of packets. One of those is the so-called serial-bit technique, where the label precedes the payload by some time guard [7]. A major disadvantage of this technique when used in LOBS is that the label and payload information are closely coupled requiring time synchronization for label delineation and extraction, and reinsertion of a new label. Another technique is to multiplex the label information by using, for instance, a subcarrier multiplexing (SCM) scheme where labeling information is carried on subcarrier frequency along with the payload data [8]. Although this out-of-band technique decouples payload and label information, it requires a broad spectrum and may suffer from performance degradation due to crosstalk and dispersion. Furthermore, the scalability of the SCM approach to high bit-rate operation may be a hurdle. To lessen the above-mentioned drawbacks, the orthogonal modulation format has been proposed to label optical packets/burst [9,10]. This technique has a compact spectrum and is scalable to high bit-rates. The proposed orthogonal modulation formats are intensity modulation (IM) for the payload and frequency shift keying (FSK) for the label. This IM/FSK modulation scheme is well suited for label erasing and rewriting in a core node composed of a semiconductor optical amplifier Mach–Zehnder interferometer (SOA-MZI) wavelength converter. Moreover, the use of a SOA-MZI structure offers the possibility for integration of a label swapping node in a single photonic circuit. One relevant issue to the performance of the SOA-MZI based label swapping is its chirp performance. In gigabitsper second long-distance direct detection optical telecommunication systems the presence of wavelength chirp may limit the transmission distance and the bit rate. In the proposed FSK/IM labeling scheme, it also may impair the detection of the FSK label information, in particular, if the chirp introduced by the label swapping process is larger than the frequency deviation between the two frequency tones of the FSK signal. In this paper, we present an assessment of the performance of a SOA-MZI based label swapper node and its impact on the quality of an FSK/IM signal. Both simulation results and measurements are presented with emphasis on the chirp performance. This paper is organized as follows. In Section 2, the proposed label swapping scheme together with the label swapping node architecture based on a SOA-MZI wavelength converter is presented. Simulation results of the performance of the FSK/IM modulation scheme are presented in Section 3. In Section 4, experimental results are presented for the performance of a commercially available SOA-MZI converter. In Section 5, we discuss our results and present guidelines for the
