The Importance of ReadingReading is a fundamental skill that opens doors to knowledge, imagination, and personal growth. It is not just a pastime but a vital activity that enriches our lives in numerous ways.Firstly, reading expands our knowledge. Whether it’s fiction or non-fiction, every book offers new information and perspectives. Through reading, we can travel to distant lands, learn about different cultures, and explore various subjects without leaving our homes. Moreover, reading enhances our vocabulary and language skills. As we encounter new words and phrases, our ability to express ourselves improves. This is particularly beneficial for students and professionals who need to communicate effectively in their academic or work environments.Reading also stimulates our imagination. When we read a story, our mind creates vivid images of the characters and scenes described. This creative exercise keeps our brain active and helps develop our ability to think creatively in other aspects of life.Furthermore, reading is an excellent stress-reliever. It allows us to escape from our daily worries and immerse ourselves in a different world. Many people find that reading before bed helps them relax and sleep better. In the digital age, where we are constantly bombarded with quick information and short attention spans, the importance of reading books cannot be overstated. It teaches us to focus, analyze, and think critically about complex ideas.Reading is not just a hobby but a crucial activity for personal development. It broadens our horizons, improves our communication skills, fuels our imagination, and provides a much-needed respite from the fast-paced world. Therefore, we should make an effort to incorporate regular reading into our daily lives.。

Children Must be Taught to Tell Right from WrongWilliam KilpatrickMany of today’s young people have a difficult time seeing any moral dimension (道德层面) to their actions. There are a number of reasons why that’s true, but none more prominent than a failed system of education that eschews (回避) teaching children the traditional moral values that bind Americans together as a society and a culture. That failed approach, called “decision-making,” was introduced in schools 25 years ago. It tells children to deci de for themselves what is right and what is wrong. It replaced “character education.” Character education didn’t ask children to reinvent the moral wheel (重新发明早已存在的道德标准); instead, it encouraged them to practice habits of courage, justice and self-control.In the 1940s, when a character education approach prevailed, teachers worried about students’ chewing gum; today they worry about robbery and rape.Decision-making curriculums pose thorny ethical dilemmas to students, leaving them with the impression that all morality is problematic and that all questions of right and wrong are in dispute. Youngsters are forced to question values and virtues they’ve never acquired in the first place or upon which they have only a tenuous (薄弱的) hold. The assumption behind this method is that students will arrive at good moral conclusions if only they are given the chance. But the actual result is moral confusion. For example, a recent national study of 1,700 sixth- to ninth-graders revealed that a majority of boys considered rape to be acceptable under certain conditions. Astoundingly, many of the girls agreed. This kind of moral illiteracy is further encouraged by values-education programs that are little more than courses in self-esteem. These programs are based on the questionable assumption that a child who feels good about himself or herself won’t want to do anything wrong. But it is just as reasonable to make an opposite assumption: namely, that a child who has uncritical self-regard wil l conclude that he or she can’t do anything bad.Such naive self-acceptance results in large part from the non-directive, non-judgmental (无是非观的), as-long-as-you-feel-comfortable-with-your-choices mentality that has pervaded (渗透) public education for the last two and one-half decades. Many of today’s drug education, sex education and values-education courses are based on the same 1960s philosophy that helped fuel the explosion in teen drug use and sexual activity in the first place.Meanwhile, while educator s are still fiddling with outdated “feel-good” approaches, New York, Washington, and Los Angeles are burning. Youngsters are leaving school believing that matters of right and wrong are always merely subjective. If you pass a stranger on the street and decide to murder him because you need money—if it feels right—you go with that feeling. Clearly, murder is not taught in our schools, but such a conclusion—just about any conclusion—can be reached and justified using the decision-making method. It is time to consign (寄出) the fads (风尚) of “decision-making” and “non-judgmentalism” to the ash heap of failed policies, and return to a proved method. Character education provides a much more realistic approach to moral formation. It is built on an understanding that we learn morality not by debating it but by practicing it.。
Writing PracticeUnit 7, B.2Have a look at the sample cause-and-effect paragraph based on the outline below.Topic: Driven out of a storeCause:· wearing casual clothes that hadn't been ironed· going to an upper-scale storeEffect:· drawing prejudice· children's staring and laughing· adults' doubtful looks· clerks' following track· refused to use bathroom· lack of trustSample paragraph:The worst experience I have ever had was the day a friend and I were driven out of a store. One day my friend and I went downtown to shop. We were wearing casual clothes that hadn't been ironed and went to one of the large upper-scale stores. Our down-scale clothing immediately drew prejudice. Some of the children we encountered stared, pointed, and laughed; adults gave us long, doubtful looks. Clerks in stores followed our tracks to watch our every move. And they even refused to let us use the bathroom. Both of us felt that there was no room for us and that the lack of trust and rude stares virtually drove us out of the store.XIV. Write a paragraph on one of the following topics showing a cause-and-effect relation. One topic has been given a detailed outline that you can follow.Topic: My friend has become a workaholic.Cause:· strong desire to prove himself· aim to do everything by himself· unwilling to spend time with his family and friendsEffect: becoming a workaholicMore topics:· The traffic in the city is getting worse.· Xiao Wang has been depressed recently.Your Writing:Sample Writing:My friend Jack has become a workaholic. He has too strong a desire to prove himself. According to him, good enough is never good enough. While others want only to finish a few things, he aims to do everything by himself. Also, he is unwilling to spend time with his family or friends, playing with the dog, or going fishing. He would feel guilty if he did so, because he believes that all his time should be spent working. He even wishes that he could have a day of 26 hours or even more. He has become a workaholic whether he likes it or not.Uint 1, B. 3Have a look at the outline below and the sample composition that has been written in the problem-response-evaluation structure.Topic: The population explosion of urban areasProblem:· slums· regular failures of electric and water services· extensive unemployment, etc.Response:· improving the facilities in rural areas· attracting more people to live in rural areasEvaluation: The problem might be solved if rural areas were to have all the facilities of urban areas.Sample CompositionThe population explosion of urban areas has given rise to a lot of problems such as sprawling slums and regular failures of electric and water services because of the excessive demands. In addition, the urban areas suffer extensive unemployment and strained educational and recreational facilities. The population explosion of urban areas must be corrected. One of the ways to correct the population explosion of urban areas is to improve the facilities in rural areas. Adequate parking facilities, attractive and well-stocked department and food stores, drug stores, gift shops and bakeries should be built in rural areas to convince more people living there to stay where they are. The government should offer lower tax rates and modest homes on convenient terms to those who choose to live in the rural areas. If rural areas were built to have all the facilities that urban areas do, the population explosion in urban areas can be corrected.XV. Write a composition of no less than 120 words with a problem-response-evaluation structure on one of the following topics. One topic has been given a detailed outline that you can follow.Topic: The fight against air pollutionProblem: The region has been seriously polluted by harmful smog.Response:· close down/modernize some factories· move some factories out of the region· plant treesEvaluation:People are happy with the measures taken by the government.Sample Writing:The region has been seriously polluted by harmful smog, which proves to be the cause of many illnesses and for the climbing death rate. As a result, people have started to move out of the area. In response to the problem, the local government has decided to fight against air pollution. It has closed down several factories, which were considered to be the major cause of the pollution. Many power plants have been modernized to give off less pollution and also moved further away frompeople's homes so as to decrease the damage. At the same time, the local government has decided to plant trees in and around the region because trees can absorb some of the pollution.People welcome all the measures taken by the government. Consequently, more and more people have begun to move back to the region to take part in this battle for a clean environment.Unit 2, B.3Have a look at the outline below and the sample composition that has been written in the cause-and-effect structure.Topic: Eating disorders among young peopleEffect: Eating disorders are a serious health problem among young people.Causes:· great importance attached to beauty and thinness· physical and emotional abuse· an unfavorable relationship with othersSample CompositionEating disorders are a serious health problem among young people. There are many reasons that can contribute to eating disorders. One of the main reasons seems to be that boys and girls want to be thin and pretty like the models they see on television and in magazines. Any mention from parents or peers about weight or appearance can lead to the onset of an eating disorder. Abuse, whether it be physical or emotional, can also contribute to an eating disorder. Such abuse can leave them with a lack of trust and low self-esteem. In addition, an unfavorable relationship with others is also a contributing factor to disordered eating habits.XV. Write a composition of no less than 120 words on one of the following topics starting with a result or an effect followed by causes. One topic has been given a detailed outline that you can follow.Topic: The performance of Chinese and American students in their studiesEffect: Chinese students are doing far better than American students in their studies.Causes:· Chinese students' strong belief in hard work· Chinese students' strong duty to their familiesSample Writing:It is reported that Chinese students are doing far better than American students in their studies. What are the reasons? That Chinese have strong belief in hard work is the first of the two main factors contributing to Chinese students' outstanding performance. Chinese students believe that through hard work and effort, people can perfect themselves and gain a better future for themselves. And they have also set higher standards for themselves. The second factor is that Chinese students have a strong duty to their families. They work hard not just for themselves but for the honor of their families. They have a high sense of responsibility. They believe that they do not deserve the support of their parents unless they do well in their studies. The two important factors are the major causes why Chinese students do so well in their studies.Unit 3, B.3Have a look at the outline below and the sample composition that has been written in the structure of a general statement supported by an example.General statement: There is a relationship between earthquake occurrences and animals’ strange behavior.Example:● the earthquake in Haicheng in 1975● chickens and pigeons not entering their cages● cattle not eating; dogs barking● rats running out from hiding places● catfish coming out of their ponds● horses acting wild around their fieldsSample Writing:Earthquakes and Animals’ BehaviorDr. Smith argues in his recent article that there is a relationship between earthquake occurrences and animals’ unusual, often strange behavior before such events. To prove his point of view he uses the earthquake in Haicheng, China in 1975 as a specific example. According to the report, many local people had observed strange animal behavior before the earthquake. Chickens and pigeons would not enter their cages; cattle would not eat; dogs barked in chorus all over the town; rats ran out from their hiding places and marched fearlessly through houses; catfish leaped out of their ponds; and horses ran wildly around their fields. He concludes in his article that observing animal behavior is one of the reliable ways to predict an earthquake.XV. Write a composition of no less than 120 words on one of the following topics which starts with a general statement supported by an example. One topic has been given a detailed outline that you can follow.General statement:There are serious security problems in Brooklyn, New York.Example:● Marissa Parry, on her way home in the evening● walking through the parking lot toward the entrance of her apartment;● a man attacking her● no one coming to help● Miss Parry lying dead a few feet away from her apartmentSample Writing:There are serious security problems in Brooklyn, New York. As might be expected, it is clear from the data that sedentary pursuits are far more popular nowadays than active ones.Of the 10,000 children that were interviewed, all the boys and girls stated that they enjoyed watching TV or videos in their spare time. In addition, the second most popular activity, attracting 80% of boys and 60% of girls, was playing electronic or computer games. While girls rated activities such as art and craft highly – just under 60% stated that they enjoyed these in their spare time – only 35% of boys opted for creative pastimes. Bike riding, on the other hand, was almost as popular as electronic games amongst boys and, perhaps surprisingly, almost 60%of girls said that they enjoyed this too. Skateboarding was relatively less popular amongst both boys and girls, although it still attracted 35% of boys and 25% of girls.(157 words)You should spend about 20 minutes on this task. The diagram below shows how a central heating system in a house works.Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant. You should write at least 150 words.model answer:This diagram provides an overview of a domestic central heating system. It shows how the tank, boiler and pipes ensure a constant flow of hot waterto both the radiators and the taps. The cold water enters the house and is stored in a water storage tank in the roof. From there üflows down to the boiler, located on the ground floor of the house. The boiler, which is fuelled by gas or oil, heats up the water as it passes through it. The hot water is then pumped round the house through a system of pipes and flows into the radiators, located in different rooms. The water circulates through the radiators, which have small tubes inside them to help distribute the heat, and this warms each of the rooms. Some of the water is directed to the taps to provide hot water for the house.Once the water has been through the pipes and radiators, it is returned to the boiler to be re-heated and circulated round the house again.Introduction: First sentence. The survey was carried out on two groups of workers: those aged from 18-30 and those aged 45-60, and shows factors affecting their work performance.Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information shown below. You should write at least 150 words.model answer:The bar chart indicates a survey on two different age groups on the factors contributing to make their environment pleasant for working. These factors are divided into external and internal factors. The internal factors are team spirit, competent boss, respect from colleagues and job satisfaction. The external factors are chance for personal development, job security, promotional prospects and money. On the internal factors above 50% in both age groups agreed that team spirit, competent boss and job satisfaction are essential to make their environment pleasant. Whereas on the external factors, there are contrasting results. On the chance for personal development and promotional aspects, 80% to 90% of the younger groups were in favor while only less than 50% of the older group thought so. A similar pattern is also noted on job security. With regards to money, 69% to 70% on both age group said it is essential. In conclusion, the internal factors have similar responses from the two age groups while they had dissimilar responses on the external factors.(170 words)This is an answer written by a candidate who achieved a Band 7 score. Here is the examiner's comment:The information contained in the bar chart has been described accurately and concisely and follows a clear progression. There is a clear introduction followed by effective comparisons between the age groups and a valid conclusion. Good formulaic phrases (the bar chart indicates, these factors are divided), although the candidate uses the same language to describe the factors in the bar chart and does not attempt to rephrase them in any way.You should spend about 20 minutes on this task. The graph below compares the number of visits to two new music sites on the web.Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information shown below. You should write at least 150 words.model answer:The graph shows people using new music places on the Internet in fifteen days period of time namely personal choice and trendy pop music. The overall trend shows fluctuation with slight Increased towards the end of the period.Starting with Music Choice websites; 40,000 poeple went on this new site on first-day. Half of them backed out the next day. In Contrast to this Pop Parade net sites were visited by 120,000 music lovers on day one which decreased slightly on the next day thereafter regaining the same fame on 3rd day. After 3rd day the enthusiasm for both music lines on Internet dropped slowly- reaching maximum fall of 40,000 on 7th day. Whereas Music choice gained popularity, slightly Improoving to get the original strength of 30,000 viewers on screen, but was getting still less visiters than their opponent Pop group i.e. 40,000 on day 7.In the biegining of the next week both gained remarkable recovery after a few fluctuations for8th and 9th day having 40,000 and 50,000 visiters respectively, reaching to their peaks of one and a half thousand new viewers for Pop Parade on 11th day showing a contrast of very few people visiting Music choice for the same day. Thereafter Music choice gained popularity on12th day for having more than 120,000 new visiters on web.In the end of the period Pop sites were visited by maximum viewers of 180,000 whereas sites located to Music choice were not explored by more than 80,000 explorers on the last day of the report.(257 words)This is an answer written by a candidate who achieved a Band 6 score. Here is the examiner's comment:Well organized with some good linking devices and collocations (gain popularity, remarkable recovery, decrease slightly) and some valid comparison of the music sites. However, some sentences are long and confusing (paragraph 5), some collocations are inaccurate (slight increased, reaching to their peaks) and there is some repetition (7th day, 3rd day, 11 th day). Some words are spelt incorrectly (poeple, Improoving, visiters, biegining). You should spend about 20 minutes on this task. The table below shows the proportion of different categories of families living in poverty in Australia in 1999.Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant. You should write at least 150 words.Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.model answer:The table gives a breakdown of the different type of family who were living in poverty in Australia in 1999.On average, 11% of all households, comprising almost two million people, were in this position. However, those consisting of only one parent or a single adult had almost doubt this proportion of poor people, with 21% and 19% respectively.Couples generally tended to be better off, with lower poverty levels for couples without children (7%) than those with children (12%). It is noticeable that for both types of household with children, a higher than average proportion were living in poverty at this time.Older people were generally less likely to be poor, though once again the trend favoured eldery couples (only 4%) rather than single eldery people (6%).Overall the table suggests that households of single adults and those with children were more likely to be living in poverty than those consisting of couples.(154 words)You should spend about 20 minutes on this task. The charts below show the percentage of their food budget the average family spent on restaurant meals in different years. The graph shows the number of meals eaten in fast food restaurants and sit-down restaurants. You should write at least 150 words.Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.model answer:Over the past 30 years, the average family has dramatically increased the number of meals that they eat at restaurants. The percentage of the family's food budget spent on restaurant mealssteadily climbed. Just 10 percent of the food budget was spent on restaurant meals in 1970, and 15 percent in 1980. That percentage more than doubled in 1990, to 35 percent, and rose again in 2000 to 50 percent.Where families eat their restaurant meals also changed during that 30-year period. In 1970, families ate the same number of meals at fast food and sit-down restaurants. In 1980, fam¬ilies ate slightly more frequently at sit-down restaurants. However, since 1990, fast food restaurants serve more meals to the families than do the sit-down restaurants. Most of the restaurant meals from 2000 were eaten at fast food restaurants. If this pattern continues, eventually the number of meals that families eat at fast food restaurants could double the number of meals they eat at sit-down restaurants.(164 words)You should spend about 20 minutes on this task. The table below shows the sales at a small restaurant in a downtown business district. Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant. You should write at least 150 words.Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.Fulfilling the Work Experience RequirementCredits will be awarded when the final report is submitted.ApplicationApprovalScheduleReportsEvaluationFinal Reportmodel answer:Gaining work experience prior to graduation helps university students to succeed in getting their first job. For this reason, some universities insist that all students must complete a Work Experience Requirement. Completing the following six stages results in the requirements’ fulfillment. The process begins with the Application stage. A student reviews an approved list of workplaces and submits applications to places where he would like to work. Next is the Approval stage. When a student receives an acceptance letter, he gives it to the professor for approval. The third stage, Schedule, requires a student to arrange his work schedule. The student should work at least 10 hours/week over 20 weeks. Reports are next. The student must complete a Weekly Report Form and turn it in to the professor every Friday. The fifth stage, Evaluation, takes place during the final work week. A student participates in an evaluation meeting with his work supervisor, who submits an Evaluation Form. The last stage requires that a student submit a Final Report before the last week of spring semester.By following these stages and subsequently submitting the final report, the student receives credit from the university.(192 words)You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.In June 1996, an experimental flu vaccine was trialled in a large country town on females only.Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant. You should write at least 150 words.Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.model answer:The diagrams show data for a flu epidemic which hit a large country town in 1996. Figure 1 gives the number of persons who died; Figure 2 shows the percentage breakdown of females who received a new flu vaccine; and Figure 3 gives the number of cases of flu before and during the epidemic. In Figure 1 it can be seen that the flu was responsible for the deaths of 2 females but no males in the period from March to May. However, from June to August, there were 4 female deaths and 1male death.According to the pie chart in Figure 2, only those females most at risk were given the new flu vaccine; 28% did not take part in the trial. Of those females who took part, 35% were aged (over 65 years old); 24% were babies or children; and 13% were either hospitalised or receiving other medical attention. From Figure 3 it is clear that the new vaccine had a positive effect on the number of new cases of flu reported in females. There were just over 1000 cases reported in March, climbing rapidly to a peak of 3500 in June. Thereafter, the number of cases dropped slowly to about 2800 in August, before levelling off at 2500 for the rest of the year. For males, the figures were lower but showed a similar trend throughout the epidemic.(232 words)The charts below show the main reasons for study among students of different age groups and the amount of support they received from employers.Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.∙You should write at least 150 words.∙You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.model answer:The first graph shows that there is a gradual decrease in study for career reasons with age. Nearly 80% of students under 26 years, study for their career. This percentage gradually declines by 10-20% every decade. Only 40% of 40-49yr olds and 18% of over 49yr olds studing for career reasons in late adulthood.Conversely, the first graph also shows that study stemming from interest increases with age. There are only 10% of under 26yr olds studing out of interest. The percentage increases slowly till the beginning of the fourth decade, and increases dramatically in late adulthood. Nearly same number of 40-49yr olds study for career and interest. However 70% of over49yr olds study for interest in comparison to 18% studing for career reasons in that age group. The second graph shows that employer support is maximum (approximately 60%) for the under 26yr students. It drops rapidly to 32% up to the third decade of life, and then increses in late adulthood up to about 44%. It is unclear whether employer support is only for career-focused study, but the highest level is for those students who mainly study for career purposes. This is an answer written by a candidate who achieved a Band 8 score. Here is the examiner's comment:This answer summarises the key features of both charts and integrates them well. Clear trends are identified and supported with appropriately-selected figures. The answer could only be improved by adding an introduction to the general topic of the charts. The information is well organised, with a clearly-signalled progression. Linking words are used accurately and precisely, although there is occasional omission. Paragraphing is used well initially, but lapses in the later section.A very good range of vocabulary is used to convey the information concisely and accurately with only occasional inappropriacy. Words are used precisely and there are no errors in spelling or word form.A wide range of structures is used and most sentences in this answer are accurate. Errors are rare and do not affect communication in this answer.。

AbstractIn the last 20 years, a sharp rise in rates of divorce and their attendant problems in Western countries has raised the alarm and concern of sociologists. Different explanations as to why these changes in marital patterns have occurred and how the problem of increasing marital instability might be dealt with can be read in many research papers; some focusing on changes in laws relating to marriage while others centering around broad societal changes. This paper seeks to critically examine the different sociological explanations for the 'divorce phenomenon' and also consider the social policy implications that each explanation carries with it.It seems that a more comprehensive explanation for and a better solution to the growing trend of marital stress and breakdown should befound within a broader socio-economic and historical framework. Keywords: divorce rate, different explanations, critically analyze, implicationsA CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF THE DIFFERENT EXPLANATIONS FOR SIGNIFICENT RISE IN DIVORCE RATES IN WESTERN COUNTRIESA major change that has occurred in the Western family is an increased incidence in divorce. Whereas in the past, divorce was a relatively rare occurrence, in recent times it has become quite commonplace. This change is borne out clearly in census figures. For example thirty years ago in Australia, only one marriage in ten ended in divorce; nowadays the figure is more than one in three (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 1996: p.45). A consequence of this change has been a substantial increase in the number of single parent families and the attendant problems that this brings (Kilmartin, 1997). An important issue for sociologists, and indeed for all of society, is why these changes in marital patterns have occurred. In this essay I will seek to critically examine a number of sociological explanations for the 'divorce phenomenon' and also consider the social policy implications that each explanation carries with it. It will be argued that the best explanations are to be found within a broad socio-economic framework. One type of explanation for rising divorce has focused on changes in laws relating to marriage. For example, Bilton, Bonnett and Jones (1987) argue that increased rates of divorce do not necessarily indicate that families are now more unstable. It is possible, they claim, that there has always been a degree of marital instability. They suggest that changes in the law have been significant, because they have provided unhappily married couples with 'access to a legal solution to pre-existent marital problems' (p.301). Bilton et al. therefore believe that changes in divorce rates can be bestexplained in terms of changes in the legal system. The problem with this type of explanation however, is that it does not consider why these laws have changed in the first place. It could be argued that reforms to family law, as well as the increased rate of divorce that has accompanied them, are the product of more fundamental changes in society.Another type of explanation is one that focuses precisely on these broad societal changes. For example, Nicky Hart (cited in Haralambos, 1995) argues that increases in divorce and marital breakdown are the result of economic changes that have affected the family. One example of these changes is the raised material aspirations of families, which Hart suggests has put pressure on both spouses to become wage earners. Women as a result have been forced to become both homemakers and economic providers. According to Hart, the contradiction of these two roles has lead to conflict and this is the main cause of marital breakdown. It would appear that Hart‘s explanation cannot account for all cases of divorce - for example, marital breakdown is liable to occur in families where only the husband is working. Nevertheless, her approach, which is to relate changes in family relations to broader social forces, would seem to be more probing than one that looks only at legislative change. The two explanations described above have very different implications for social policy, especially in relation to how the problem of increasing marital instability might be dealt with. Bilton et al. (1995) offer a legal explanation and hence would see the solutions also being determined in this domain. If rises in divorce are thought to be the consequence of liberal divorce laws, the obvious way to stem this rise is to make them less obtainable. This approach, one imagines, would lead to a reduction in divorce statistics; however, it cannot really be held up as a genuine solution to the problems of marital stress and breakdown in society. Indeed it would seem to be a solution directed more at symptoms than addressing fundamental causes.Furthermore, the experience of social workers, working in the area of family welfare suggests that restricting a couple's access to divorce would in some cases serve only to exacerbate existing marital problems (Johnson, 1981). In those cases where violence is involved, the consequences could be tragic. Apart from all this, returning to more restrictive divorce laws seems to be a solution little favored by Australians. (Harrison, 1990).Hart (cited in Haralambos, 1995), writing from a Marxist-feminist position, traces marital conflict to changes in the capitalist economic system and their resultant effect on the roles of men and women. It is difficult to know however, how such an analysis might be translated into practical social policies. This is because the Hart program would appear to require in the first place a radical restructuring of the economic system. Whilst this may be desirable for some, it is not achievable in the present political climate. Hart is right however, to suggest that much marital conflict can belinked in some way to the economic circumstances of families. This is borne out in many statistical surveys which show consistently that rates of divorce arehigher among socially disadvantaged families (McDonald, 1993). This situation suggests then that social policies need to be geared to providing support and security for these types of families. It is little cause for optimism however, that in recent years governments of all persuasions have shown an increasing reluctance to fund social welfare programs of this kind.It is difficult to offer a comprehensive explanation for the growing trend of marital breakdown; and it is even more difficult to find solutions that might ameliorate the problems created by it. Clearly though, as I have argued in this essay, the most useful answers are to be found not within a narrow legal framework, but within a broader socio-economic one. Finally, it is worth pointing out that, whilst we may appear to be living in a time of increased family instability, research suggests that historically, instability may have been the norm rather than the exception. As Bell and Zajdow (1997) point out, in the past, single parent and step families were more common than is assumed - although the disruptive influence then was not divorce, but the premature death of one or both parents. This situation suggests that in studying the modern family, one needs to employ a historical perspective, including the possibility of looking to the past in searching for ways of dealing with problems in the present.ReferencesAustralian Bureau of Statistics (1996). 作文作品作曲英文Sure, here's a sample essay written in English with a conversational tone:---。
I love writing. It's like a form of therapy for me. When I put pen to paper, or fingers to keyboard, I feellike I can express myself in a way that I can't through spoken words. It's a release, you know? And when I lookback at what I've written, it's like looking at a piece of my soul.Music is my passion. I can't imagine a world without it. It's the soundtrack to my life, always there in the background, shaping my experiences and emotions. When I listen to a song, it's like I'm transported to anotherplace and time. It's magical how music can do that, don't you think?I'm a composer. I love the process of creating something from nothing. It's like a puzzle, trying to fit all the pieces together in just the right way. And when it finally comes together, it's the best feeling in the world. It's like I've given birth to a new piece of art.Writing music is a lot like telling a story. Each note is a word, each melody a sentence. And when it all comes together, it's a beautiful narrative that can evoke so many emotions. It's amazing how music can speak to people without saying a single word.I find inspiration everywhere. It could be a conversation I overhear on the bus, or the way the leaves rustle in the wind. It's like the world is constantly whispering its secrets to me, and all I have to do is listen. And then I take those whispers and turn them into music. It's like capturing a moment in time and preserving it forever.---。
recent sample of your criticalwritingTitle: The Impact of Social Media on Mental HealthIn the contemporary digital age, social media has become an integral part of our lives, connecting people across the globe and providing platforms for expression and communication. However, this pervasive technology comes with significant downsides, particularly its impact on mental health. This critical writing aims to explore the ways in which social media usage can negatively impact individuals, and the potential solutions to mitigate these effects.Social media not only allows people to share their thoughts and experiences but also fosters a culture of comparison and narcissism. The constant stream of curated images and carefully crafted narratives can make individuals feel inadequate, leading to feelings of loneliness, anxiety, and depression. The pressure to keep up with others' lives and portray a perfect existence can be overwhelming, leading to increased stress levels and the development of unrealistic standards of success. Moreover, social media often serves as a platform for cyberbullying, body shaming, and other forms of negative social commentary. This constant stream of negativity can have a profoundly negative impact on one's self-esteem and mental well-being. Research has shown that victims of cyberbullying are more likely to experience depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues. To address these issues, several solutions can be implemented. Firstly, individuals need to be made more aware of the negative impacts of social media and taught how to navigate it mindfully,识别并 avoid unrealistic standards and negative social commentary. Secondly, social media companies need to take responsibility for creating platforms that promote positive mental health outcomes. This includes implementing features that encourage positive interactions, reducing the emphasis on likes and shares, and removing harmful content. In conclusion, social media's impact on mental health is significant and multifaceted. It is crucial that we recognize the potential negative effects of social media usage and implement strategies to mitigate its impact on our mental well-being. By fostering awareness and positive social media practices, we can create a healthier online environment that promotes positive mental health outcomes for all.。
Practice makes perfect习作一:It is a famous saying that practice makes perfect. The truth of it is self-evident. The more you practice, the more skillful you will be. Moreover, you will find better ways of doing things. As everyone can see, practice helps us to be efficient. When we study English, we have so much to learn, such as grammar, vocabulary. In order to learn it well, we need much practice. We must read a lot, write a lot and listen a lot. Only through practice can we have a good command of it. Remember to practice if you want to speak English fluently and express yourself freely.Another case in point is typing. A good typist can type fast and accurately. But you will not be surprised at her performance if you know how much time he/she has spent practicing. Through practice, he/she has both typing speed and accuracy improved. It goes without saying that practice makes perfect. Since all of us have realized the importance of practice, why not put it into practice?习作二:A fa mous saying goes that “practice makes perfect”. It means when people are learning to do something new, they will be good at it after practicing over and over again.I have had such experience for many times. In learning English it’s especially obvious. To learn English well, we must read more , speak more, listen more and write more. At the beginning, I couldn’t speak English fluently, so I took every chance to practice such as going to the English corner talking to foreigners, reading English aloud in the morning, and even speaking to myself, from time to time. I insisted for a long time and to my delight, my spoken English was much better than before. It’s also the same in English listening and writing, etc.Another example, when people begin learning to type, they are not familiar with the key board and can’t type fast. As long as they can insist on practicing, it is certain that one day they will grasp it and become very skillful and fast.I like this saying--practice makes perfect, which encourages me to practice more and more till I reach perfect.。
Sample essay of exploratory writingAn Observation and an ExplanationDesmond MorrisIt is worth looking at one or two aspects of the way a mother behaves towards her baby. The usual fondling, cuddling and cleaning require little comment, but the position in which she holds the baby against her body when resting is rather revealing. Careful American studies have disclosed the fact that 80 per cent of mothers cradle their infants in their left arms, holding them against the left side of their bodies. If asked to explain the significance of this preference most people reply that it is obviously the result of the predominance of right-handedness in the population. By holding the babies in their left arms, the mothers keep their dominant arm free for manipulations. But a detailed analysis shows that this is not the case. True, there is a slight difference between right-handed and left-handed females, but not enough to provide an adequate explanation. It emerges that 83 per cent of right-handed mothers hold the baby on the left side, but then so do 78 per cent of left-handed mothers. In other words, only 22 per cent of the left-handed mothers have their dominant hands free for actions. Clearly there must be some other, less obvious explanation. The only other clue comes from the fact that the heart is on the left side of the mother’s body. Could it be that the sound of her heart-beat is the vital factor? And in what way? Thinking along these lines it was argued that perhaps during its existence inside the body of the mother, the growing embryo becomes fixated (‘imprinted’) on the sound of the heart beat. If this is so, then the re-discovery of this familiar sound after birth might have a calming effect on the infant, especially as it has just been thrust into a strange and frighteningly new world outside. if this is so then the mother, either instinctively or by an unconscious series of trials and errors, would soon arrive at the discovery that her baby is more at peace if held on the left against her heart, than on the right. This may sound far-fetched, but tests have now been carried out which reveal that it is nevertheless the true explanation. Groups of new-born babies in a hospital nursery were exposed for a considerable time to the recorded sound of a heartbeat at a standard rate of 72 beats per minute. There were nine babies in each group and it was found that one or more of them was crying for 60 per cent of the time when the sound was not switched on, but that this figure fell to only 38 per cent when the heart-beat recording was thumping away. The heart-beat groups also showed a greater weight-gain than the others, although the amount of food taken was the same in both cases. Clearly the beat less groups was burning up a lot more energy as a result of the vigorous actions of their crying.Another test was done with slightly older infants at bedtime. In some groups the room was silent; in others recorded lullabies were played. In others a ticking metronome was operating at the heartbeat speed of 72 beats per minute. In still others the heart-beat recording itself was played. It was then checked to see which groups fell asleep more quickly. The heartbeat group dropped off in half the time it took for any of the other1 / 2groups. This not only clinches the idea that the sound of the heart beating is a powerfully calming stimulus, but it also shows that the response is a highly specific one. The metronome imitation will not do—at least, not for young infants. So it seems fairly certain that this is the explanation of the mother’s left-side approach to baby-holding. It is interesting that when 466 Madonna and child paintings (dating back over several hundred years) were analyzed for this feature, 373 of them showed the baby on the left breast. Here again the figure was at the 80 per cent level. This contrasts with observations of females carrying parcels, where it was found that 50 per cent carried them on the left and 50 per cent on the right. What other possible results could this heart-beat imprinting have? It may, for example, explain why we insist on locating feelings of love in the heart rather than the head. As the song says: ‘you gotta have a heart!’ It may also explain why mothers rock their babies to lull them to sleep. The rocking motion is carried on at about the same speed as the heart-beat, and once again it probably ‘reminds’ the infants of the rhythmic sensations they became so familiar with inside the womb, as the great heart of the mother pumped and thumped away above them.Nor does it stop there. Right into adult life the phenomenon seems to stay with us. We rock with anguish. We rock back and forth on our feet when we are in a state of conflict. The next time you see a lecturer or an after-dinner speaker swaying rhythmically from side to side, check his speed for heart-beat time. His discomfort at having to face an audience leads him to perform the most comforting movements his body can offer in the somewhat limited circumstances; and so he switches on the old familiar beat of the womb.Wherever you find insecurity, you are liable to find the comforting heart-beat rhythm in one kind of disguise or another. It is no accident that most folk music and dancing have a syncopated rhythm. Here again the sounds and movements take the performers back to the safe world of the womb.2 / 2。

A recent survey reveals that the growing number is strikingly high with over double every year. This essay is to discuss why students strive to join the ranks of civil servants and offer my view on this fever. The factors for this fever are complex. First, the post for a civil servant is comparatively securer than working in a company. A government employee may stay in the job for life, free of the fear of being laid off, and enjoy a carefree retired life. Besides, the pay and benefits are very satisfactory. This is vital in a society where bucks are still closely associated w ith a better life. Most important of all, it offers appealing prospects of personal advancement and promotion. It is a healthy trend for young graduates to take civil servant jobs. Anyway, everyone has his own ideal and ambition. However, as far as I’m c oncerned, I will choose to work with a business or corporation, for I feel my personality renders me more qualified for a non-government organization. I can’t stand inefficiency and I welcome challenge and variety.Writing Sample:That some college students at university hire cleaners to do laundry and cleaning has led to a heated debate. Some people advocate and support the idea and the practice. In their eyes, hiring cleaners to keep the dorms clean can help students save time, which they can spend on their studies.Others, however, argue that hiring cleaners could help students save time and devote to their studies is merely a pretext. Usually, those students who claim they are too busy to clean their own dorms are most often found preoccupied with playing computer games or shopping. They refuse to do manual labor because they tend to regard themselves as elites once they succeed in entering a college.Personally, I thin k college students shouldn’t hire cleaners. In performing the cleaning himself/herself, college students learn to share the responsibility for managing a public space of which one is a part. And by doing so, the students also show respect for the common we lfare of the entire dorm. Cleaning one’s own dorm is a necessary process whereby one becomes a responsible person.Writing:On AdversityNo one will fail to notice the fact that everyone meets setbacks and frustrations in life, and each tries hard to avoid them, only to find that they’re just like your own shadow accompanying you all your lives. The truth is, adversity can exert great influence on you, depending on how you cope with it.When confronted by adversity, different people make different response. Some people consider it a stumbling block on the road to success, and get depressed and even sink into despair; others consider it the stairway to great accomplishments and try to overcome it with constant struggle. The latter, therefore, will recognize their disadvantages from their temporary defeat, draw lessons from it, and grow stronger each time they have coped with a difficulty. In my opinion, adversity often leads to prosperity. Painful anddepressing as it is, overcoming adversity endows us with great confidence that is crucial to achieve success. Great people are not born successful, they are great only because they have tempered their personality and remedied their deficiencies through experiencing countless adversity and defeat, which is actually a goddess of blessings in disguise.WritingThe period 1995-2005 witnessed a remarkable increase in the number of students who study abroad in City X. As can be seen from the chart, in 1990, only about 10000 students in this city pursued their further study overseas while in 2000 this figure quickly rose to 40000. In 2010, however, the number of overseas students surged to over 120000, which is over 10 times as many as that of 1990.The increase in the number of students who study abroad can be accounted for by a couple of factors. First, along with social and economy progress, the living standard of the Chinese people has been greatly enhanced, so they have enough money to send their children to study abroad. Meanwhile, more and more young people want to broaden their vision by exposing themselves to foreign professors and experiencing exotic cultures.Overseas study has a profound effect on both individuals and society. It can widen our people’s horizons, promote friendship between people with different cultures, boost our social economy and make our society more prosperous and dynamic. So many people have asked the question.According to a recently survey, mere 55% parents think essential knowledge is more important for their children. They point that knowledge is the basic of everything, without which it’s utterly impossible to develop one’s creativity. Besides that, the relationship of knowledge and creativity is input and output. Last but not least, focusing on the basic will make you patient, make you dig out the essential part of things. But opposed to the parents, 85% educators are for that creativity play a vital role in the socialization of children. Frankly, I agree with them more. The fact that we face demand us to emphasize the creativity. Date back to the past, our ancestors made many wonderful achievements. They discovered some math theories hundreds years before western scientists. The reason why we lag behind today lies in we lack of the creativity today. In schools, students are stuffed with piles of knowledge under the pressure of fierce competition. Many young people lose their chances to enter college just because of one early failure in a stupid examination. But practically speaking, how can they show their true abilities?Creativity is the key to a brighter future. Fortunately we have learned the point, and many workable reforms are being carried out. In most schools, students are actively involved in the class activities. For sake of the Chinese children, Creativity is in need.To Get along with Y our RoommateRoommate conflicts among college students are often heard on campus over recent years. Study shows that roommate conflicts make the excitement of campus life grow grey and affect students’ daily life as well as their academic learning. It is often the case that many of these conflicts spring from trivial things such as the time when to turn off the light and space where to store their luggage or personal belongings. When personalities don’t mix, the specifics can tear roommates apart and sometimes even lead to serious conflicts.Roommate conflicts are harmful and need to be settled. Though many people think that school discipline can soften the conflicts, it is my personal view that learning to be tolerant with each other can play a more constructive role because it teaches students flexibility and the art of compromise. Besides, communication contributes to the solution to this problem since many of these conflicts stem from misunderstanding. How Do I Manage My Money? One of the challenges facing college students when they enter college is how to manage their money. Although there are many different attitudes towards money management, I have my own way in doing so.To be money wise, first of all, is to focus on the supply of my money. Aside from the limited living allowances from my parents, I sometimes do part-time jobs as ahome tutor in my spare time to make up the difference. Occasionally, I can win the scholarship to supplement my income by hard work.To be self-denial on daily expenses is another way to manage my money. As a saying goes,“A penny saved, a penny gained.”So I never buy extravagant products for I know making money is not a piece of cake. The best way to manage my money is to make a budget. I spend 500 yuan on food, 150 yuan on entertainment or study materials, 50 yuan on phone bills and another 100 yuan as a bank deposit in case of rainy days. I am never running out of money and I can always make ends meet.Dear Editor,I am writing this letter to put forward a proposal for learning to say sorry or thank you on our campus life, which, I believe, is part of good manners to our students. (purpose of writing the letter---thesis statement)Good manners are important to our life and students who are nice and gentle to each other make the school lif e more comfortable and nicer to live. (importance of good manners---正面论述positive support) But sometimes I feel some of us have got away from it. Too often I see people who have disturbed others never say sorry. Never say thank you when others do something for them. W e get lazy and in our laziness w e think something such as sorry or thank you does not really matte r but it can matter very much. (反面论述negative support) (evidence to support the thesis statement---facts) Therefore, I call on all the students to attach importance to good manners and learn to say sorry or thank you in our daily life. (appeal of the writer)A New Movie TheatreEntertainment is an important part of everyone’s life. We all need to take time to relax insgroupsto live healthy lives and do our work efficiently. It is easier to relax when an appropriate form of entertainment is convenient and close by. Therefore, I would support a proposal to build a new movie theater in myneighborhood.Entertainment places can bring some disadvantages to a community such as increased traffic and noise, but I believe the advantages of a new movie theater would outweigh these concerns. For one thing, the people in my neighborhood would save time. When they wanted to see a movie they could simply walk to the new theater rather than spend time traveling by bus or car. In addition, it would be safer for children to visit a nearby movie theater rather than one in some other part of the city. And finally, a new theater might attract other businesses, such as restaurants and coffee shops, where the people of my neighborhood could go to relax. In short, a new movie theater in the neighborhood would increase the number of entertainment options for the residents. They could enjoy themselves more easily without spending a lot of time traveling to another part of the city. For these reasons I would support the building of a movie theater in my neighborhood.。
