Monopole Crescent Elliptical Antenna with Band-Notched Characteristics for UWB Applications*IntroductionIn 2002, the Federal Communications Commission(FCC) allowed ultra wideband (UWB) communicationsfor short-range peer-to-peer high speed communication.The spectrum from 3.1 to 10.6 GHz has been allocated for unlicensed UWB measurement and communication applications with equivalent isotropically radiated power less than −41.3 dBm/MHz[1]. Antennadesigns for UWB systems are very demanding. Due to the inherently ultra-wide operating bandwidth from 3.1to 10.6 GHz, circuit designs for UWB radio systems are much more challenging than for conventional narrowbandsystems. The systems must produce broad operating bandwidths for impedance matching, highgain transmissions in the desired direction, stabletransmission patterns and gains, consistent group delays, high transmission efficiency, and low profiles. Various studies have been devoted to evaluating theperformance of UWB antennas[2-6]. Planar, monopole, and dipole antennas have been proposed for UWB applications[5-11]. Although some new antennas[8,9] have been shown to provide very low voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) over extremely wide frequency ranges, they will likely interfere withexisting systems. Thus, UWB antennas with bandnotched characteristics have been developed to reduce the interference. However, none of the studies of band-notched antennas[9,12-14] show how to control the notched band with a simple band-notched structure.1 Antenna ConfigurationThe notched band antenna consists of a crescentshaped elliptical monopole radiator and a reflecting ground plane. A T-shaped stub is added to provide thebroadband radiation pattern and the band-notched characteristic.The monopole may be a circular, elliptical, square, rectangular, or hexagonal planar antenna with a hole. The characteristics of monopoles with various circular holes were experimentally examined by Qiu et al.[13]Their results demonstrated that the modified antennas still offer a broad impedance bandwidth and acceptableradiation patterns. Their conclusions are based on the principle that the current is concentrated on the outeredge of the planar monopole. However, the various outside shapes of the antenna affect the impedance bandwidth, while the inside resonator shape influencesthe band-notched characteristics. Therefore, the hole shape should either be similar to the original antenna shape or be carefully designed so as not to influence the original input impedance characteristics as shown in Fig. 1. The effects of the hole radius in Fig. 1b on the return loss, S11, expressed as the antenna impedance calculated by using computer simulationtechnology (CST), are shown in Fig. 2. The results show that the impedance bandwidth is only slightly influenced by the hole size. An analysis of the band-notched structure leads to the T-shaped stub design which, with the crescent shape, has two advantages compared to other stubs[13-15] as follows:(1) The antenna can be easily extended to otherband-notched designs without changing the dimensions of the original shape.(2) The T-shaped stub has a simple geometry withfewer parameters, which reduces the computational effort for optimization.(The structure of the band-notched antenna with the T-shaped stub is shown in Fig. 3 with a crescentshapedelliptical monopole radiator and a reflecting ground plane.2 Parametric Study andCharacteristic AnalysisThe antenna geometry, especially the size of the T-shaped stub, affects the bandwidth W and the central frequency f of the notched band. The design ofthe T-shaped stub has two parameters, the top length and the height of the T-shaped stub. These two parameters greatly affect the bandwidth and central frequency. The other antenna design parameters will just improve the band-notched characteristics. The antenna in Fig. 3 has a wide bandwidth, while the T-shaped stub provides the band-notched characteristics. As shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the band-notched central frequency is dependent on t and h1 with larger heights of the T-shaped stub reducing the central frequency.Longer lengths of the T-shaped stub also reduce the central frequency. The band-notched bandwidth of the antenna is also greatly influenced by the length of the T-shaped stub with longer lengths reducing the band-notched bandwidth. Thus, the central frequencyis mainly dependent on the height and the length of the T-shaped stub, while only the length t strongly affects the bandwidth. Table 2 lists the simulation results for W and f for various t.Thus, a rectangular ground plane was chosen withdimensions of 75 mm×75 mm×1 mm. The radiating element was a 0.5-mm thick copper sheet placed verticallyabove a finite-sized ground plane with a Sub-miniature-A connector.3 Measurement Results andDiscussion3.1 Impedance bandwidthAn antenna was built to verify the simulation results with a =30 mm, b=20 mm, R=8 mm, h = 0.4 mm, w = 0.5 mm, t =5.02 mm, and 1 h = 4.91mm. The VSWRor return loss was measured with an Agilent N5230A vector network analyzer. The radiation patterns were measured in a far-field anechoic chamber. Figure 6 shows that the simulation results agree well with the measured VSWR. The results show the input impedance is well matched with the VSWR (below 2:1)bandwidth covering the entire UWB bandwidth (3.1- 10.6 GHz) .3.2 Group delay characteristicsFor UWB systems, and especially impulse-based systems, the shape of the transmitted electrical pulse should not be distorted by the antenna. Thus, a stable group delay response is desirable, which requires a highly linear phase response with respect to frequency. The group delay shown in Fig. 7 was obtained by taking the first derivative of the phase measured by usingan N5230A vector network analyzer. The observed variations are less than 400 ps with an average of 1.5 ns for the frequency range from 2 to 12 GHz, for thetraveling time of the propagating waves between a pair of the current antennas 40 cm apart. Therefore, a UWBpulse template (within 3.1-10.6 GHz) transmitted or received by the antenna will retain its basic shapewithout severe distortion.3.3 Field distribution and radiation patternsIn addition to the radiation patterns, the antenna gain was also measured. The measurement was performed by using a standard horn antenna as a reference gain antenna. The distance between the transceivers was 1 m. The antenna radiation patterns at 4.0 GHz, 5.3 GHz,and 7.0 GHz are shown in Fig. 8. The radiation patterns show an omni-directional pattern in the UWB except for the exempted band. A Printed Crescent Patch Antenna forUltrawideband ApplicationsNtsanderh C.Azenui and H.Y .D.YangAbstract—A miniaturized crescent-shape microstrip antenna is proposed for ultrawideband (3–10GHz)applications.The crescent antenna is evolved from an elliptical patch antenna by carving a circular hole inside symmetrically.The circular aperture introduces an additional antenna in-band resonance and provides wider bandwidth with more design flexibility.The radiation characteristics of this crescent antenna are investigated with full-wave electromagnetic simulations and compared with an elliptical antenna.A crescent antenna prototype that occupies only 60%area of the elliptical patch is fabricated and tested.Antenna pattern and impedance measurements show good performance over the 3–10GHz band with consistent radiation patterns,low cross polarization,and a substantial gain.The design method is also described.Index Terms—Disc monopole,patch antenna,printed circuits,ultrawideband.I.I NTRODUCTIONIEEE 802.15standard utilizing the frequency spectrum from 3to 10GHz for high-data rate ultrawide band applications has attracted significant attention recently in wireless industry.High-performance miniaturized front-end printed circuit board antennas are essential in portable systems [1],[2].There is an ever growing demand of reducing antenna area while main-taining or increasing bandwidth.The circular or elliptical shape monopole antennas are found to have sufficient 10dB return-loss bandwidth for ultrawideband applications [3]–[12].The an-tennas integrated on a printed circuit board can be viewed as a suspended monopole antenna collapsed on the substrate surface.Without a conductor on the back to form a resonator,it main-tains thelow-feature of a suspended antenna and is broad-band.A50-trace extends into the antenna central arm and it requires a conductor backing to form a microstrip transmission line.The circular/elliptical patch antenna is in effect consisting of many crescent-shape wire antennas.The existence of many possible current modes explains the reason of such a broad an-tenna bandwidth.The current modes that could exist on a cir-cular metal patch are in the form of higher order Bessel func-tions of the first kind,where the current is small at the center of the patch and mostly concentrated on its periphery.Manuscript procedures and for-mulas are also discussed.II.T HE D ESIGN OF A C RESCENT -S HAPED P RINTEDC IRCUIT P ATCH A NTENNA The crescent patch antenna for ultrawideband communica-tions proposed in this letter is shown in Fig.1.The ellipticalpatch is designed with a majoraxis,and a minoraxis (ellipticityratio ),from whicha circular region ofradiusis carved out.The center of this circular region is displaced by 2.0mm above the center of the outer ellipse.The idea of cutting out a circular region derives from the examination of the current distribution of the elliptical patch antenna.It is observed that the currents on the elliptical patch radiator at all frequencies are mostly con-centrated on its periphery,with very low current density toward its center.The initial design parameters are based on formulas described in Section III.Both Zeland IE3D and Ansoft HFSS simulations are used to optimize the design.The crescent patch prototype is printed on an FR4material ofrelativepermittivityand of loss tangent of 0.01,with no ground plane directly underneath it.The substrate thicknessis().The antenna is fed by a50-microstrip transmission line which consists of a ground plane hasdimensionsand,and the lengthextension from the ground plane edge to the substrate edge is29.5mm().The actual ground plane length is in-significant to the antenna performance unless it is too small(asa radiator by itself).The antenna location relative to the sub-strate edge affects the antenna performance slightly.There is anoverlap of86between the patch and the ground plane in theminor axis direction of the patch.This overlap region is used tofine tune the impedance.All conducting elements of the antennaare realized with a half ounce of copper.A.Antenna Return LossNumerical simulations and measurements were conducted onthe crescent-shaped patch antenna.The simulations and opti-mizations are based on Ansoft HFSS and an HP8510C networkanalyzer and on-surface probes are used for the impedance mea-surements.Its return loss characteristics are presented in Fig.2,and show that it has an impedance bandwidth for return losslessthan from2.7–12GHz.In addition,there is goodagreement between the measured and simulated return loss re-sults from2.8to8.0GHz,but discrepancies exist between thetwo beyond8.0GHz.One reason for the latter could be that thesimulations do not correctly model substrate losses—assumedto remain constant—above8.0GHz.The discrepancy in the lowfrequencies(below3GHz)is mostly due to the small groundplan and substrate.Parametric studies of the effect of the inner-hole(r1and r2inFig.1)on the return loss(antenna impedance)using HFSS areshown in Fig.3.For comparison,the case without the inner holeis also shown.It is observed from Fig.3(a)and(b)that whenboth of r1and r2are less than7.0mm(ellipse major and minoraxes:27and18mm),the return loss of the crescent antenna(alsotrue for other radiation characteristics)are nearly identical tothose of the full elliptical antenna.However,when they are bothgreater than7mm,an additional resonance appears.A largerinner hole corresponds to a lower second resonant frequency.This is due to the fact that for a larger the hole,the current pathalong the inner periphery is longer,and that corresponds to alonger monopole wire.Half of the perimeter of the cutout holeisFig.3.Parametric resonance while preserving the impedance bandwidthas compared to the full elliptical antenna can be found fromFig.3to beapproximatelyandfor the present design.An upperlimit of8.7mmfor is interesting.It means that the crescentantenna still exhibits ultrawideband performance even when theinner circle is approaching the edge of the ellipse(in Fig.1is0.3mm).If the inner hole is too large,thefirst two resonancesmerge and,thus,degrade the impedance match.Also,it is foundthat the wideband property seems to be better preserved by a cir-cular rather than an elliptical hole.B.Current ModesThrough a numerical study of the vector current distributionon the antenna prototype(),three character-istic current modes are found to exist on the crescent patch overthe bandwidth ing Fig.2as a resonator.C.Radiation PatternsSimulated and measured results of the radiation patterns ofthe crescent antenna()and the corre-sponding full elliptical antenna are presented in Figs.4and 5,respectively.The results include copolarization and cross polar-ization inthe-plane andthe -plane (Fig.1).Al-though only the results at 6GHz are shown,the patterns re-semble a donut shape with an approximatelyomnidirectional -plane pattern and a figure of eight pattern inthe -plane uptoparison of the simulated radiation ef ficiency of the elliptical and crescentantennas.parison of the measured peak gain of the elliptical and crescent antennas.8GHz.As the frequency increases beyond 8.0GHz,however,and more high-order current modes are excited,the radiation pattern of the antenna becomes more directional;with the de-formations introduced to the pattern appearing mostly as cross polarization inthe -plane,and resulting in tilting the main beam away from the broadside direction inthe -plane.Sim-ulations results show a cross polarization inthe -plane of lessthanfor all frequencies although the measurements are slightly higher.The radiation patterns of the crescent antenna and the elliptical antenna are found similar.The measurement and simulation results agree fairly well.The computed radiation ef ficiency of both the elliptical an-tenna and the crescent antenna is shown in Fig.5.The compar-ison shows very close radiation ef ficiency throughout the whole 3–10GHz band.This observation further validates the theory that most currents are on the edge of the ellipse and the cutout has insigni ficant effect on power loss on the conductor and sub-strate.However,the crescent antenna shows a slightly lower ef-ficiency in the midband where there is a resonant mode with current crowed on the inner edge.This is due to the fact that there is a higher inner current density at the edge of the cutout hole and the conductor loss is higher for the crescent antenna.116IEEE ANTENNAS AND WIRELESS PROPAGATION LETTERS,VOL.6,2007Fig.6shows a comparison of measured peak antenna gain between the full elliptical antenna and the crescent antenna.It is found that the crescent antenna has a slightly higher peak gain throughout the entire band while maintaining similar ef ficiency (Fig.5).III.D ESIGN F ORMULAS FOR AN E LLIPTICAL P ATCH A NTENNA Although the prototype design is based on full-wave HFSS simulations,simple analytic formulas can be derived to provide an initial design and insight.Due to the fact that most current is concentrated on periphery,it is as if there is a wire antenna circulating around the ellipse (or circle).For ultrawide band de-sign,the first resonant frequency should be slightly higher than the lower band boundary.The length of the ellipse perimeter should be around one wavelength long at the lowest in-band frequency (two half-wave length wires in parallel fed symmetri-cally).Practically,this frequency should be lower than 3GHz in ultrawide band application to compensate for the environment variation.For an ellipse of a majoraxis and a minor axis ,the perimeter is givenby(1)whereis a complete elliptic integral of the second kind with ellipticmodulus ,theeccentricity.(2)This can be computed numerically using Matlab.For the cres-cent and the elliptical antenna,the perimeter of the outer ellipse should be close to one wavelength of the average medium.If the lowest frequency in the impedance bandwidth of the antennais (GHz)and the effective permittivity of the medium of radi-ation can be approximatedby(3)then(4)where the perimeter unit is in millimeters.In the presentdesign,and,and .The full-wave HFSS simulation in Fig.2shows.Comparing the results of the above computations,it is apparent that for both the crescent patch antenna and the elliptical antenna,the longest current path on the patch (or,equivalently,half of the perimeter of the patch)should be approximately half of the wavelength at the lowest frequency ofthe antenna in-band.Further simulation shows that the optimumellipticityis about 1.5for the crescent patch antenna in terms of the overall area and the lowest in-band frequency.For practical applications in ultrwide band systems,the inner hole of the crescent can be used for RF circuits without affecting much of the antenna operation.The overall crescent antenna area could be reduced by 40%as compared to a full elliptical patch.IV .C ONCLUSIONA crescent shape monopole antenna was proposed for ultra-wide band communications in the 3–10GHz band.Parametric studies of the antenna characteristics were presented,and the ra-diation properties of an antenna prototype were discussed and compared with those of the full elliptical antenna.The crescent antenna prototype is found similar in radiation properties to the full elliptical antenna,but with 40%reduction in area (60%of the ellipse area).The characteristic current modes on the cres-cent antenna are identi fied and provide insights into the antenna properties.Finally,design formulas are given relating the lowest frequency in its operational band to the outer perimeter of the
