It was there that the emperors dealt with the official business with their ministers. In Mandarin(普通话), the Forbidden City is called "Zijin Cheng". However, the colour of the palace itself is not purple. The colour purple("Zi") stands for the power of the great emperors of China. It was so sacred(神圣的) that the commoners could not even dream of ever going in.The emperor also had some of the largest festival celebrations at the Forbidden City. During Chinese New Year, the emperor would invite all the members of his family and his officials to a banquet. The banquet had a hundred and eight Chinese dishes. A group of Americans who taught English in other countries recently discussed their experiences. They decided that miscommunications were always possible, even over something as simple as "yes" and "no".On her first day in Micronesia, an island in the Pacific, Lisa thought people weren't paying any attention to her. The day was hot. She went into a store and asked, "Do you have cold drinks?" The woman there didn't say anything. Lisa repeated the question. Still the woman said nothing. She later learned that the woman had answered her. She had raised her eyebrows (眉毛), which in Micronesia means "yes".Jan remembered an experience she had in Bulgaria, a country in Europe. She went to a restaurant that was known for its cabbage (卷心菜). She asked the waiter, "Do you have cabbage today?" He nodded his head. Jan waited, but the cabbage never came. In that country, a nod means "no".Tom had a similar problem when he arrived in India. After explaining something in class, he asked his students if they understood. They answered with many different nods and shakes of the head. He thought some students had not understood, so he explained again. When he asked again, they did the same thing. He soon found out that his students did understand. In India, people nod and shake their heads in different ways depending on (取决于) where they come from. An idiom is a group of words. It has a special meaning that is different from the usual meaning. For example, under the weather is an idiom meaning ill. So when people say "I'm under the weather." they are saying that they're not feeling well. Another example, in all weathers means in all kinds of weather. So, "There are homeless people sleeping on the streets in all weathers" tells us that homeless people sleep on the streets no matter whether it is cold or hot.Different languages may have different ways to make idioms. For people who are learning a foreign language, idioms could cause misunderstandings and bring them endless headaches. On the other hand things are done right, idioms can also be a fun way of looking into a new culture and understanding how the people think and talk.Metaphor (比喻) is often used in idioms. Let's read the following two examples:● It makes my blood boil(煮沸) then people litter.● The night was dark and quiet; my blood ran cold when I heard a strange noise outside at dark night. In neither situation above, our blood can reach the point so high or so low in temperature. Yet, with the situations the two sentences created, it is not difficult to work out the unhappy feelings of really angry in the first example and very afraid in the second.Of course, not all idioms are this easy to understand. When we come to idioms of a foreign language, a good dictionary of idioms is always suggested.1.This passage tells us something about_______ in the English language.A. grammarB. writingC. readingD. idioms2.If your brother breaks your computer, you can say to him, "_____".A.I'm under the weatherB.I'm there in all weathersC.You've made my blood boilD.My blood runs cold3.What is the writer's advice when you come to an expression like under the weather?A.We should look it up in a good idiom dictionary.B.We should try to express our minds with it.C.We should find an interesting way to learn it.D.We should create situations to guess its meaning.(六)For most people in the West, Valentine's Day (情人节) is celebrated on February 14, but here in Japan it's on March 14—exactly one month after Valentine's Day—called White Day.To really understand what White Day is all about, you have to understand what Valentine's Day in Japan is like. Unit 6 Give Me Liberty, or Give Me Death课文I翻译1.
高考英语外刊阅读模拟强化训练语法填空专题十八①It’s one of the most damaging US intelligence breaches in years – and also one of the weirdest. The leaks of top secret Pentagon files ____1_____(apparent) began some time in January, on a small online forum on Discord, a messaging platform popular _____2___ video gamers, set up by a group of people connected by a ___3_____(share) love of guns and military gear. The leader of the group, known as “O.G.”, worked at a military base and began sharing images of classified documents, many _____4_____(reveal) sensitive information about the war in Ukraine. In early March, another member of the group reposted these files on a ____5____(large) Discord forum devoted to the Minecraft computer game and a Filipino YouTube celebrity. From there, the images made their way – some times in doctored form – ___6____ a Russian propaganda account on Telegram, and thence to Twitter and the mainstream media. That’s ____7_____ the leaks finally came to the attention of officials.“We’re seeing the emergence of a new type of leaker,” said Fred Kaplan on Slate. In the past, most foreign policy leaks _____8_____(come) from officials seeking to push some agenda, or from outraged whistleblowers. But O.G. – identified by the press ___9___ Jack Teixeira, a 21-year-old IT technician serving in the Massachusetts Air National Guard, who was arrested and charged last week – seems to have been motivated less by ideology than a simple desire _____10___(show) off. It shows there’s something seriously wrong with America’s system of managing secrets.【The Week UK(April 22, 2023)】②“You can almost hear the collective sigh of relief emanating from the Palace,” said Sarah Vine in the Daily Mail. Last week, after months of “will they, won’t they”, ___1___ more than a week after the RSVP deadline, Prince Harry finally confirmed that he would be attending his father’s coronation on 6 May – though his wife will remain at home in California with their two children. Meghan’s ____2_____(reject) of King Charles’s invitation was “unmistakably a snub”. But ___3___ was probably for the best, given all the hurt the pair ____4______(cause) through their Netflix documentary and Harry’s memoir, Spare. At least Charles, Camilla and the rest won’t have to walk on eggshells, for fear ___5___ upsetting “these two moaning minnies with their tiresomely _____6____(end) grievances and perceived slights”.Meghan was never going to appease the haters, ____7____ she did. Stay away from the coronation, and it’s a snub. Attend, and she’d be stirring up trouble or trying to “upstage” the King. But ____8_____(skip) the coronation was the smart move. She has stayed out of trouble and won “a small victory against her detractors in the British press” – robbing them of countless column inches _____9___ they would have no doubt devoted to her “disrespectful” body language, or ____10____ she “singlehandedly ruined the big day by smiling too much or looking too attractive or, perish the thought, holding her husband’s hand, the absolutely sicko”. Instead, she can enjoy the event from the comfort of her sofa, like the rest of us.【The Week UK(April 22, 2023)】③Throughout its 184-year history, the Grand National(全国越野障碍赛马)has reliably produced equal quantities of “drama and danger”. And this year’s edition had “pretty much everything: sorrow, ____1______(suffer), glory and pain”. The chaos began before the race even started, ___2______ spectators were greeted by the “extraordinary sight of dozens of animal rights activists ____3_____(use) ladders to climb into Aintree’s grounds”. The goal of the protesters was not so much _____4_____(prevent) the race taking place as to draw attention to their message: ____5_____ horse racing is an unacceptably cruel sport. When the “world’s most famous steeplechase” finally got under way, 15 minutes later than _____6_____(schedule), it proved both exhilarating and distressing. Of the 39 runners who started, only 17 made ____7__ to the finish – and there were some dreadful falls along the way. The worst of these claimed the life of Hill Sixteen, who ____8_____(put) to sleep after breaking his neck while falling at the first jump. A later fall caused jockey Johnny Burke to break his arm. There’s a reason the Grand National is the only one of Britain’s 10,000 horse races that ____9____(reliable) “gets the entire nation interested”. At four-and-a-quarter miles, it is Britain’s longest horse race; its 30 fences are more numerous and more challenging than those of any other steeplechase; and its “40-runner field” is unique. These characteristics make the Grand National by far the “riskiest”, for both horses and ______10____(ride).【The Week UK(April 22, 2023)】④This “dazzling” animation, Suzume (铃芽之旅) , from Japanese director Makoto Shinkai has already become ____1___ box-office hit around the world, and deservedly so. An unconventional “teen romance”, it follows Suzume, a 16-year-old ___2____ mother was killed in an earthquake some years ago. One day when she ____3____(cycle) to school, she bumps into a handsome student named Souta, who turns out to be a “Closer” – a person ____4____(charge) with “closing doors to another world”. When “a ginormous, city-destroying worm” escapes from that other world, Souta and Suzume must join forces to stop it. “There is a touch of Stranger Things” to this“rich” tale, which mines the “trauma felt by the young _____5____(follow) Japan’s 2011 earthquake and tsunami”; and the result is “extraordinary enough to appeal ____6____ even non-anime fans”. The film has rather a lot of chase sequences which become “repetitive”; but it has real merit. With its “stark warnings about the real risk of ecological disaster”, Suzume is a “powerful coming-of-age tale ____7____ plucks at the heartstrings” while delivering some real laughs along the way. It is beautiful to look at too. An “epic adventure about hormone-fuelled teenagers facing up to _____8_______(environment) destruction”, the film is sometimes a “little too worthy for its own good”. Still, it has “boundless ambition, and the courage _____9______(place) weighty issues ____10___ the heart of a kids’ film”.【The Week UK(April 22, 2023)】答案①apparently;with;shared;revealing;larger;to;when;have come;as;to show②and; rejection; it; have caused; of; endless; whatever; skipping; that; how③suffering;when;using;to prevent;that;scheduled;it;was put;reliably;riders④a;whose;is cycling;charged;following;to;that;environmental;to place;at。

Indeed,I shared an office with him, lived with his family for a while and (5) him as he travelled around the world, giving talks and collecting medals.I soon discovered some of Stephen's singular (6) .The first,of course, was that he was very smart.Students are probably always in awe of their (7) and with Stephen the awe was even greater.Indeed,on matters of physics,I always regarded him as an oracle, just a few words from him yielding(产生)insights that would have taken weeks to (8) on my own. However,Stephen was only human and not all encounters led to illumination.Once I asked a question about something that was (9) me.He thought about it silently for several minutes and I was quite (10) with myself for asking something that Stephen couldn't answer immediately. His eyes then closed and I was even more impressed with myself because he wasclearly having to think about it very deeply.Only after some time did it become clear that he had fallen asleep.Nowadays,I also sometimes fall asleep while talking to students,so I recall this incident with amusement. The other human side of Stephen is that he didn't suffer fools gladly and sometimes got annoyed. One of the stories put around is that he would vent his frustration by running over students 'toes.I'm not sure about that-he once ran over the toes of the Prince of Wales, and I'm sure that was just an accident. On the other hand,I well recall one occasion when I made a remark in the departmental common room at tea time that showed I had misunderstood what he'd been saying.Stephen screamed “No!"so loudly that his wheelchair shot back halfway across the room under the recoil.I was most impressed that a single word from him could have such (11) consequences.I also learned about Stephen's stubbornness and determination to continue doing things for himself as long as possible, despite the relentless progress of his illness. For example, because he had an office in both the department of applied mathematics and theoretical physics and the Institute of Astronomy at Cambridge,I also had offices in both places.I recall that he sometimes gave me a lift(probably illegally!)between the two places in his three-wheeled invalid car.I found this rather (12) because I thought he drove faster than was ter,he had to discontinue the use of the car but he never lost his drive and the desire to travel as far and wide as possible. One regret is he didn't live long enough to achieve his dream of going into space.I'm often asked where Stephen stands in the pantheon(名流群)of great physicists. There are many ways of being a great physicist and they cannot be (13) like runners in an Olympic race.Stephen himself never (14) to have the status of Newton or Einstein, but I strongly disagree with people who suggest that his scientific contributions have been (15) because of his iconic status. His disability was clearly a factor in his becoming so famous, but I doubt any other (16) physicist will achieve the accolade of being interred next to Isaac Newton in Westminster Abbey.Stephen died on Einstein's birthday and was born on the date of Galileo's death,so it's (17) that he should be connected to his two greatest heroes in this way.I doubt Stephen would haveattributed much significance to this, but he would certainly (18) that we don't understand the mystery of time.In any case, the synchronicity is fitting because his first major discovery was that spacetime trajectories can have singular endpoints where strange things may happen.Stephen was the most (19) person I have ever known and I feel truly (20) that he was my friend.1.A.Otherwise B.Nevertheless C.Moreover D.Therefore2.A.worldwide B.popular C.evident D.neutral3.A.in process of B.on account of C.in possession of D.accounting for4.A.familiar B.acquainted C.intimate D.related5.A.accompanied B.served C.treated D.entertained6.A.habits B.habitats C.tempers D.characteristics7.A.supervisors B.inspectors C.tutors D.conductors8.A.work out B.pick out C.put out y out9.A.bothering B.puzzling C.disordering D.suffering10 A.satisfied B.delighted C.impressed D.amused11 A.distant B.dramatic C.remote D.distinct12 A.fairy B.chilly C.scary D.nasty13 A.leveled B.classified C.ranked D.awarded14 A.claimed B.appealed C.fastened D.applied15 A.outnumbered B.emphasized C.outlined D.exaggerated16 A.optimistically B.potentially C.positively D.contemporary17 A.magic B.odd C.mysterious D.procedure18 A.overtake B.promote C.confess D.acknowledge19 A.singular B.strange C.single D.simple20 A.enjoyable B.grateful C.privileged D.rewarding【答案】BCBCA DAABC BCCAD DBDAC【解析】1,根据前面一句中,我的其他导师告诉我Stephen是整个部门里最耀眼的人,后面说很快我和Stephen的关系不是一般的导师和学生之间的关系可知,作者虽然认为Stephen聪明耀眼,但是与自己关系密切,所以用让步比较合适,答案选B.2,由本段后文中可推出,我和Stephen关系密切是很明显的。

AWhat Is Your Pet Trying to Tell YouAnimals want our attention, and sometimes they're quite obviously about asking for it.Unusual behaviors are often our pets' way of telling us to stop what we're doing and play with them. It's why Fido constantly chases his tail and why Kitty keeps rolling around.A desperately bored pet may have "bad" behaviors to get a reaction-even a negative one!Feed me.Sure, your dog loves you, but that's not why he's licking(舔)your face.A puppy learns to lick his mother's mouth to get a little leftover food, so Spot isn't kissing you in our sense of the word; he just wants a snack.I'm stressed.Cat owners also misinterpret their furry friends' kisses. While a cat might lick you to show love, sometimes she'll do it to ease herself. One way to tell if her licking is stress-related is to see if it goes on for an extended period of time.Birds also overclean when they feel anxious. Some will even drag out their own feathers. My tail tells all.Dogs wag(摇)their tails to the right when they see something or someone they want to approach, and to the left when they see something they want to avoid. When frightened, dogs curl their tails in, while cats wrap theirs around themselves. And if a cat's tail looks like a question mark, she's eager to play.21.What does a dog show if it kisses its owner?A.Hunger.B.Love.C.Fear.D.Sadness.22.How many kinds of pets are include a headrest, a shoulder belt, a seat belt and soon. The bikes are expensive-$3,000 to $4,000, and that's with the foundation’s producer's discount. For kids lucky enough to get one, they're a life changer."We worked with a 14-year-old who has spina bifida(脊柱裂)," says McLindon."She spent most days on the couch watching TV.Soon after she got her bike, she was training for special-needs triathlons(三项全能运动).In a magazine interview, she said, 'I always knew there was an athlete in me.'"So far, the foundation has given away45 0 bikes, and that's just a start."I do a lot of things.I run a how much money she has personally, how she gets it and who stands to inherit(继承)it.What we do know from public records is that the Queen receives at least $20 million in annual income throughher private estate, and another 100 million dollars from the UK government each year. The first thing to understand is that the Queen's income comes from both public and private possessions.A large amount of it comes from something called the Sovereign Grant. Here's how that works. In the 1700s, the monarchy(王室)handed over income from land to the government known as the Crown Estate. Each year the government pays a percentage of the profits made on those possessions back to the monarchy. That annual income is known as the Sovereign st year it totaled more than $107 million. And it is used to fund the Queen's official duties and maintain royal residences like Buckingham Palace. But even if we can't identify her exact worth, the royal finances are looking healthy as the Queen celebrates her 70th Queen Ceremony. The Sunday Times Rich List estimated the Queen's net worth is $466 million, up $6.2 million dollars from last year. And while the Duchy of Lancaster saw UK income drop during the pandemic, according to its financial records, the Queen's income has been turning upwards over the past decade.Anyway, the monarchy is a private family, and they are unlikely to share any details of their wealth with the British public, and that probably won't change anytime soon.28.How does the Queen get her income?A.From the Crown Estate.B.From the Sovereign Grant.C.From the monarchy and the exactly identified.B.It decreases during the pandemic.C.It is more than that from last year.D.It is more than that of the UK government.31.Which section may the text be taken from?A.Health.B.History.cation.D.Economy.DAre you sleeping restlessly, forgetting little things, and feeling depressed and lonely? Don't worry. We’ve all been there. You're probably just stressed out.Stress isn't always a bad thing. It can be handy for a burst of extra energy and focus, like when you're playing a competitive sport, or have to speak in public. But when it's continuous, the kind of situation most of us face daily, it actually begins to change yourbrain.Chronic(长期的)stress, like being overworked or having arguments at home frequently, can affect brain size, its structure, and how it functions, right down to the level of your genes. As levels of cortisol(皮质醇)rise, electric signals in your hippocampus(海马体), the part of the brain associated with learning, memories, and stress control, decline. When the hippocampus weakens, so does your ability to control your stress. That's not all, though.Cortisol can literally cause your brain to get smaller in size.Too much of it results in theshrinking of the part of your brain that regulates behaviors like concentration, decision-making, judgement, and social interaction. It also leads to fewer new brain cells being made in the hippocampus. This means chronic stress might make it harder for you to learn and remember things, and also set the stage for more serious mental problems, like depression and eventually Alzheimer's disease. It's not all bad news, though. There are many ways to change what cortisol does to your stressed brain. The most powerful weapons are exercise and getting into deep thoughts, which involves breathing deeply and being aware and focused on your surroundings. Both of these activities decrease your stress and increase the size of the hippocampus, and therefore your memory improves. So don't feel defeated by the pressures of daily life.Get control of your stress before it takes control of you.32.On which occasion can stress be a good thing?A.When making decisions.B.When delivering a speech.C.When being in deep thought.D.When forgetting little things.33.What may influence your genes' level according to the text?A.Having chronic stress.B.Playing competitive sports.C.Working overtime last Friday.D.Having a fight with your brother.34.What does the underlined word "It" refer to in Paragraph 6?A.Relevant behavior.B.Too much cortisol.C.Social interaction.D.The smaller brain in size.35.Which of the following can be a good way to relieve stress?A.Sleeping a lot.B.Doing sports regularly.C.Changing the cortisol.D.Having social interaction.第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分, 满分12.5分)阅读下面短文, 从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

In thinking about what was possible from Geneva, where we are based, we decided on a trip to Istanbul a two-hour plane ride from Zurich. We envisioned the trip as a prelude to more exotic ones, perhaps to New Delhi or Bangkok later this year, but thought our 11- and 13-year-old needed a first step away from manicured boulevards and pristine monuments. What we didn’t foresee was the reaction of friends, who warned that we were putting our children “in danger",referring vaguely, and most incorrectly, to disease, terrorism or just the unknown. To help us get acquainted with the peculiarities of Istanbul and to give our children a chance to choose what they were particularly interested in seeing, we bought anexcellent guidebook and read it thoroughly before leaving. Friendly warnings didn’t change our planning:although we might have more prudently checked with the U.S. Department’s list of troublespots. We didn’t see a lot of children among the foreign visitors during our six-day stay in Istanbul, but we found the tourist areas quite safe, veryinteresting and varied enough even to suit our son, whose oft-repeated request is that we not see “every single” church and museum in a given city.Vaccinations werent needed for the city, but we were concerned about adapting to the water for a short stay. So we used bottled water for drinking and brushing our teeth, a precaution that may seem excessive, but we all stayed healthy.Taking the advice of a friend, we booked a hotel a 20-minute walk from most of Istanbul’s major tourist sites. This not only got us some morning exercise, strolling over the Karakoy Bridge, but took us past a colorful assortment of fishermen, vendors and shoe shiners. From a teenager and preteens view. Istanbul street life is fascinating since almost everything can be bought outdoors. They were at a good age to spend time wandering the labyrinth of the Spice Bazaar, where shops display mounds of pungent herbs in sacks. Doing this with younger children would be harder simply because the streets are so packed with people; it would be easy to get lost. For →our two←, whose buying experience consisted of department stores and shopping mall boutiques, it was amazing to discover that you could bargain over price and perhaps end up with two of something for the price of one. They also learned to figure out the relative value of the Turkish lira, not a small matter with its many zeros.Being exposed to Islam was an important part of our trip. Visiting the mosques, especially the enormous Blue Mosque, was our first glimpse into how this major religion is practiced. Our children’s curiosity already had been piqued by the five daily calls to prayer over loudspeakers in every comer of the city, and the scarves covering the heads of many women. Navigating meals can be troublesome with children, but a kebab, bought on the street or in restaurants, was unfailingly popular. Since we had decided this trip was not for gourmets, kebabs spared us th e agony of trying to find a restaurant each day that would suit the adults’ desire to try something new amid children’s insistence that the food be served immediately. Gradually, we branched out to try some other Turkish specialties. Although our son had studied Islam briefly, it is impossible to be prepared for every awkward question that might come up, such as during our visits to the Topkapi Sarayi, the Ottoman Sultans9 palace, no guides were available so it was do-it-yourself, using our guidebook, which cheated us of a lot of interesting history and anecdotes that a professional guide could provide. Next time, we resolved to make such arrangements in advance. On this trip, we wandered through the magnificent complex, with its imperial treasures, its courtyards and its harem. The last required a bit of explanation that we would have happily left to a learned third party.Whom does“our two”in PARAGRAPH 5 refer to? ______ .A. the coupleB. the kidsC. the gourmetsD. local-style markets8.(单项选择题)(每题 2.00 分) Which of the following statements is NOT a way of presenting new vocabulary?____.A. definingB. using real objectsC. writing a passage by using new wordsD. giving explanations9.(单项选择题)(每题 2.00 分) Exceptional children are different in some significant ways from others of the same age, for the same age, for these children to develop to their full adult potential; their education must be adapted to those differences.Although we focus on the needs of exceptional children, we find ourselves describing their environment as well. While the leading actor on the stage captures our attention, we are aware of the importance of the supporting players and the scenery of the play itself. Both the family and the society in which exceptional children live are often the key to their growth and development. And it is in the public schools that we find the full expression of society5s understanding the knowledge, hopes, and fears that are passed on to the next generation.Education in any society is a mirror of that society. In that mirror we can see the strengths, the weaknesses, the hopes, the prejudices, and the central values of the culture itself. The great interest in exceptional children shown in public education over the past three decades indicates the strong feeling in our society that all citizens, whatever their special conditions, deserve the opportunity to fully develop their capabilities.“All men are created equal.” We’ve heard it many times, but it still has important meaning for education in a democratic society. Although the phrase was used by this countrys founders to denote equality before the law, it has also been interpreted to mean equality of opportunity. That concept implies educational opportunity for all children—the right of each child to receive help in learning to the limits of his or her capacity, whether that capacity be small or great. Recent court decisions have confirmed the right of all children—disabled or not —to an appropriate education, and have ordered that public schools take the necessary steps to provide that education. In response, schools are modifying their programs, adapting instruction to children who are exceptional to those who cannot profit substantially from regular programs. From its passage we learn that the educational concern for exceptional children______.A. is now enjoying legal supportB. disagrees with the tradition of the countryC. was clearly stated by the country’s foundersD. will exert great influence over court decisions10.(单项选择题)(每题 2.00 分)What stage can the following grammar activity be used at?The teacher asked students to arrange the words of sentences into different columns marked subject, predicate, object, object complement, adverbial and so on.A. Some Thoughts About the Nanking Massacre Speaking to the World War II and the Nanking Massacre, firstly I feel exces sively painful to the people who were tortured and killed by Japanese then. But at the same time, I hold more thoughts about the war.
Firstly, the population of Chinese people then was so many times larger than Japan’s. So here comes my question: why China would be that extremely defeated by Japan. As an old saying goe s,“Unity is strength. ” If Chinese people united against the enemy, China would have not paid for such huge sacrifices. The author, Zhang Chunru, has mentioned in her book that some Chinese have the servility. Because of it, some people didn’t even think ab out rebelling against the invaders and they just accepted the reality. But some others who had strong national character rebelled against the war for peace. It is the national character’s disunity that to some extent exacerbated the massacre during the WW II . Only when the national character highly united can it conquer any hardship.
Then, Japanese, they have racial supremacy. They thought their nation was the best. When war came, the whole nation could more easily united to fight together. Their national character was highly united. From some movies related to WW II , we can see the Japanese are so loyal to their Mikado that they are willing to sacrifice themselves. Although they are extremely inhuman and cruel to other nations, we have to admit they are a highly-united nation.
Lastly, the war has passed for nearly 100 year, but the history of humiliation cannot disappear in Chinese’memory. China is is a nation which has underwent all sorts of hardships. No diplomacy for a weak nation. This is the lesson we Chinese people learned from the miserable history. We will not forget the cruel past. We know that being prepared for danger in times of safety. And for a strong China, all Chinese people will strive to the goal together.。
