In the United States, large cars and midsize cars are more popular than smaller cars. As a result, European automakers used to make different kinds of small cars while American automakers used to build bigger, heavier cars. However, these days, automakers in both America and Europe produce cars of different sizes. This is because most automakers sell their cars all over the world. The price of gasoline (汽油) is one reason for differences in car choices. Since gasoline is more expensive in Europe, many Europeans want smaller, lighter cars that will travel a long way on a gallon (加仑) of gasoline.Other reasons also enter into the big or little car decision. Many European cities have narrow, winding (弯曲的) streets. In these cities a small car is easier to control than a large one.For a long time, few Americans bought small cars. Instead they chose large cars, because these roomy cars were more comfortable for large families and long trips. Some people also liked the powerful engines (发动机) that large cars had. Since gasoline was cheap, drivers did not mind that the large cars used a lot of gasoline. But in the 1970s, there were gasoline shortages in the United States. The price of gasoline went up. Though large cars were still more popular than smaller cars, sales of small cars increased. Some people also bought small cars because these cars caused less air pollution than larger cars.Tod ay, Americans’ car choices are still changing. Though Americans are still buying many small cars, the fastest growing sales are for certain kinds of large cars. These types of cars are called minivans and sport utility vehicles (SUV). They are very popular today. But of course, that could change tomorrow.1.Which of the following does the article lead you to believe?A.Sport utility vehicles are small cars.B.Minivans are becoming less popular.C.European car companies sell many cars in America.D.Cars with powerful engines caused less air pollution.2.What does the word “roomy” in Paragraph 4 mean?A.having much space B.having little spaceC.having a large room D.having a small room3.What can we infer (推断) from the article?A.Small cars are better than large cars.B.The price of gasoline is always rising.C.Large cars will always be popular in the United States.D.People like to have different kinds of cars to choose from.B14、(A)After living and teaching in China for 10 months, my wife and I returned to California to visit our children and friends. Many of them asked what we liked most about China. The friendly people, the wonderful food, and the beautiful sights were at the top of our list. Then one night, after yet another restaurant dinner with friends, I realized that there was one other thing that I really liked about China: No tipping.Tipping is a subject that has long interested me.In America, the three kinds of services that require tipping are waiters/waitresses,taxidrivers, and barbers. The standard tip is now between 15 and 20 per cent of the bill, depending on the quality of service. Why these three particular services deserve this special treatment is a mystery to me. Why am I supposed to tip a waiter for bring me food when I don’t need to tip the flight attendant on an airplane for doing the same thing? Why do I need to tip a taxi drive, but not the bus driver? Why am I expected to tip the barber for cutting my hair but not the dentist for fixing my teeth? I have been a teacher for 39 years. No one has ever tipped me after a particularly successful class or lecture. The whole concept of tipping doesn't make any sense. I have heard that there are some expensive restaurants in major cities in the US where the restaurant does not give the waiters any salary at all due to the large amounts of the tips. The tipping problem in many European countries is solved by adding a 15 per cent to the bill. I prefer the Chinese solution: No tipping at all. When I was visiting the US this summer, I went out to dinner several times with friends. Having spent 10 month in China not even thinking about tipping, I found it irritating to have to spend extra money on the meal -- especially when the amount of the tip would every often buy a meal in China. While I understand why China, as a developing nation, has gradually accepted many Western customary practices, I hope the Chinese are wise enough to never start the unnecessary practice of tipping.1.What made the writer realize that he liked no tipping most about China ?A.Talking with his friends . B.Returning to California.C.Giving a large amount of tips. D.Having dinner in a restaurant.2.If the bill is$200 in an European restaurant, how much should a customer pay as a tip?A.$20 B.$30 C.$50 D.$1003.What’s the writers opinion on tipping in the US?A.Wise B.Necessary C.Reasonable D.Annoying4.Which of the sentences is true?A.All kinds of services need tipping in the US . B.The writer hoped China would never start tipping .C.The writers whole family lived in China for 10 months. D.China has never accepted any western customary practices5.What can be the best title for the passage?A.Please stop tipping. You're not even the same personyou were five years ago. We don't just mean your personality. While we'd love tostart a never-ending discussion over the “true self”,we're here to talk about thecells(细胞)in your body.Do you know how your fingernails and hair are constantly growing and replacingthemselves? The same thing happens almost everywhere in your body. Your outerlayer of skin makes way for fresher skin, and inside your veins(血管),blood cells turn over to make wayfor fresh blood. It's probably no surprise that these types of cells are short-lived, even some of the mostseemingly permanent(永久的)parts of your body replace themselves over time-including your bones.Strong as your bones might seem, the cells they're made of won't last a lifetime. Bones are masters at rebuilding themselves, which is why most broken bones can heal on their own into the right shape.Bones have special cells called osteoclasts(破骨细胞)whose job is to break down bone, even if itisn't broken, and send the minerals into the blood stream. This may sound frighteningly like your bonesare wearing away, but your body knows what it's doing. As osteoclasts break down bone, osteoblasts(成骨细胞)build up new bone to replace the old. By the end of each year, about 10 percent of yourentire adult skeleton will have been rebuilt through this process. If 10 percent of your bone breaks down every year, it must take about ten years to renew 100percent of your skeleton. That would be a great guess, and it lines up nicely with the medical myth thatthe human body's cells are fully replaced every seven years, but the body is a bit more complex. That10 percent is just an average-some bone grows faster than that, and some grows slower. While someparts of your bone will turn over quickly, other parts will stick around for decades. In fact, most bonecells could live as long as 50 years. So before you get wrapped up in an identity crisis(危机)about the cells in your body disappearingon you, know that you can lose some hair and you can cut your nails, but the bones of you aren't goinganywhere-at least not very soon and not all at once.1.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?A.All the cells in our body are the same ones that we were born with.B.Our blood cells are constantly growing and replacing themselves.C.It must take about 10 years to rebuild 100 percent of our skeleton.D.Osteoblasts can break down skin and also rebuild it over time.2.The underlined words "wearing away" probably mean“__”.A.building up B.taking off C.dying out D.turning on3.What does the passage mainly talk about?A.Our skeleton seems permanent but renews itself over time.B.It is not surprising that some cells in our body are short-lived.C.There are two types of cells in our bones: osteoclasts and osteoblasts.D.We are not the same person we were five years ago because of personality.Ⅴ.书面表达19、书面表达地球是我们的家园,我们作为地球的主人,就应该好好保护地球。

Which is safer --- staying at home, traveling to work on public transport, or working at the office? Surprisingly, each of these carries the same risk, which is very low. However, what about flying compared to working in the chemical industry? Unfortunately, the former is 65 times riskier than the latter! In fact the accident rate of workers in the chemical industry is less than that of almost any of human activity, and almost as safe as staying at home. The trouble with the chemical industry is that when things go wrong they often cause death to those living nearby. It is this that chemical accidents so newsworthy. Fortunately, they are extremely rare. The most famous ones happened at Texas City (1947), Flixborough (1974), Seveso (1976), Pemex (1984) and Bhopal (1984).Some of these are always in the minds of the people even though the loss of life was small. No one died at Seveso, and only 28 workers at Flixborough. The worst accident of all was Bhopal, where up to 3,000 were killed. The Texas City explosion of fertilizer killed 552. The Pemex fire at a storage plant for natural gas in the suburbs of Mexico City took 542 lives, just a month before the unfortunate event at Bhopal. Some experts have discussed these accidents and used each accident to illustrate a particular danger. Thus the Texas City was caused by tons of ammonium nitrate, which is safe unless stored in a great quantity. The Flixborough fireball was the fault of management, which took risks to keep production going during essential repairs. The Seveso accident shows what happens if the local authorities lack knowledge of the danger on their doorstep. When the poisonous gas drifted over the town, local leaders were incapable of taking effective action. The Pemex fire was made worse by an overloaded site in an overcrowded suburb. The fire set off a chain reaction of exploding storage tanks. Yet, by a miracle, the two largest tanks did not explode. Had these caught fire, then 3,000 strong rescue team and fire fighters would all have died.1. According to the passage, the chemical accident that caused by the fault of management happened at _________.A. Texas cityB. FlixboroughC. SevesoD. Mexico City2. Which of the following statements is TRUE?A. Working at the office is safer than staying at home.B. Travelling to work on public transport is safer than working at the office.C. Staying at home is safer than working in the chemical industry.D. Working in the chemical industry is safer than traveling by air.3. From the passage we know that ammonium nitrate is a kind of _____.A. natural gas, which can easily catch fireB. fertilizer, which can't be stored in a great quantityC. poisonous substance, which can't be used in overcrowded areasD. fuel, which is stored in large tanks4. From the discussion among some experts we may conclude that _____.A. to avoid any accident we should not repair the facilities in chemical industryB. the local authorities should not be concerned with the production of thechemical industryC. all these accidents could have been avoided or controlled if effective measureshad been takenD. natural gas stored in very large tanks is always safe【参考答案】1—4、BDBC阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D项中,选出最佳选项。
入舵市安恙阳光实验学校湖南2017高考英语阅读理解一轮练习【2015·新课标全国卷I】阅读理解BThe freezing Northeast hasn't been a terribly fun place to spend time this winter, so when the chance came for a weekend to Sarasota, Florida, my bags were packed before you could say “sunshine”.I left for the land of warmth and vitamin C(维生素C), thinking of beaches and orange trees. When we touched down to blue skies and warm air, I sent up a small prayer of gratefulness.Swimming pools, wine tasting, and pink sunsets(at normal evening hours, not 4 in the afternoon) filled the weekend, but the best particularly to my taste, dulled by months of coldweather root vegetables was a 7 a.m.adventure to the Sarasota farmers' market that proved to be more than worth the early wakeup call. The market, which was founded in 1979, sets up its tents every Saturday from 7:00 am to 1 pm, rain or shine, along North Lemon and State streets.Baskets of perfect red strawberries, the redpainted sides of the Java Dawg coffee truck; and most of all, the tomatoes: amazing, large, soft and round red tomatoes.Disappointed by many a broken, vineripened(蔓上成熟的) promise, I've refused to buy winter tomatoes for years. No matter how attractive they look in the store, once I get them home, they're unfailingly dry, hard, and tasteless. But I homed in, with uncertainty, on one particular table at the Brown's Grove Farm's stand, full of fresh and soft tomatoes the size of my fist. These were the real deal and at that moment, I realized that the best part of Sarasota in winter was going to be eating things that back home in New York.I wouldn't be experiencing again for months.Delighted as I was by the tomatoes in sight, my happiness deepened when I learned that Brown's Grove Farm is one of the suppliers for Jack Dusty, a newly opened restaurant at the Sarasota Ritz Carlton, where luckily for me.I was planning to have dinner that night.Without even seeing the menu, I knew I'd be ordering every tomato on it.【试题分析】文章讲述了作者生活在冬天寒冷的纽约,当有一个到佛罗里达州萨拉索塔一周的机会,作者体验到不同的冬天。

Feeling blue abo ut the world ? “Cheer up,” says science writer Matt Ridley.“The world has never been a better place to live in,and it will keep on getting better both for humans and for natu re.”Ridley calls himself a rational optimist—rational, because he's carefully weighed the evidence optimistic, because that evidence shows human progress to be both unavoidable and good. And this is what he's set out to prove from a unique point of view in his most recent book The Rational Optimist. He views mankind as a grand enterprise that,on the whole, has done little but progress for 100, 000 years. He backs his findings with hard facts gathered through years of research. Here's how he explains his views.1)Shopping fuels inventionIt is reported that there are more than ten billion different products for sale in London alone.Even allowing for the many people who still live in poverty, our own generation has access to more nutritious food, more convenient transport, bigger houses, better cars, and of course, more pounds and dollars than any who lived before us .This will continue as long as we use these things to make other things. The more we specialize and exchange, the better off we'll be.2) Brilliant advancesOne reason we are richer, healthier, taller, cleverer, longerlived and freer than ever before is that the four most basic human needs—food, clothing, fuel and shelter—have grown a lot cheaper.Take one example. In 1800 a candle providing one hour's light cost six hours' work.In the 1880s the same light from an oil lamp took 15 minutes' work to pay for.In 1950 it was eight seconds.Today it's half second.3) Let's not kill ourselves for climate changeMitigating(减轻) climate change could prove just as damaging to human welfare as climate change itself.A child that dies from indoor smoke in a village, where the use of fassilfuel(化石燃料) electricity is forbidden by wellmeaning members of green political movements trying to save the world,is just as great a tragedy as a child that dies in a flood caused by climate change. If climaic change proves to be mild, but cutting carbon causes real pain,we may well find that we have stopped a nosebleed by putting a tourniquet(止血带) around our necks.人类的进步是无法阻挡的,是令人乐观。

Businesses a re witnessing a difficult time, which has in turn produced influence on consumers’ desire to go green. However, shoppers are still laying stress on environmental concerns. Two thirds of customers say that environmental considerations inform their purchases to the same degree as they did a year ago, while more than a quarter say that they are now even better aware of the environmental effect on what they buy. This may help to influence how shops store goods on their shelves. And the companies should still make efforts to become more environmentally friendly. Two out of three people think it is important to buy from environmentally responsible companies, with about one in seven saying that they had even decided to take their custom elsewhere if they felt a company’s environmental reputation was not good enough.Harry Morrison, chief executive(主管)of the Carbon Trust, sympathizes:“I understand this situation where survival is very important now. But from environmental considerations, the clock is ticking—we don’t have much time. In addition, cutting carbon has an immediate effect as costs drop and a medium-term benefit for the brand.”Larger companies have an extra motivation to look at reducing their carbon footprint, as new rules next year will require businesses to buy carbon allowances to make up for their emissions(排放). Those that have taken early action will have a head start. More than two thirds of consumers are not clear about which companies are environmentally responsible. This suggests that firms that are able to relay clearly their message to the public will be in a pole position to attract shoppers. The Carbon Trust believes that it can help by informing customers about the good work companies are doing. “When companies are granted(授予)the standard, they can use a logo(标识)in all their marketing which makes it clear that they are working towards cutting emissions,” Mr. Morrison said.( ) 1. Then, consider this:you might be in a state of sub-health(亚健康).Sub-health,also called the third state or gray state,is explained as borderline state between health and disease.According to the investigation by the National Organization, over 45 percent of sub-health people are middle-aged or elderly. The percentage is even higher among people who work in management positions as well as students around exam-week.Symptoms(征兆)include a lack of energy, depression, slow reactions, insomnia(失眠),agitation, and poor memory.Other symptoms include shortness of breath, sweating and aching in the waist and legs. The key to preventing and recovering from sub-health,according to some medical experts,is to form good living habits, alternate work and rest, exercise regularly, and take part in open air activities. As for meals, people are advised to eat less salt and sugar. They should also eat more fresh vegetables, fruits, fish because they are rich in nutritional elements—vitamins and trace elements(微量元素)—that are important to the body.Nutrition experts point out that it is not good to eat too much at one meal because it may cause unhealthy changes in the digestive tract(消化道).They also say that a balanced diet is very helpful in avoiding sub-health.1.When you are in a state of sub-health,you should ________.A .stay home and keep silentB. go to a doctor and buy some medicineC. not consider it very seriousD. find out the reasons and relax yourself提示:从全文可以看出,亚健康是身体对压力、疲劳的一种反应,即使最先进的仪器也查不出病因。

In the United States, there were some well-constructed houses for native Indians, ranging from the simple brush shelter to the five-storied pueblo. In the eastern United States, one of the existing types was that commonly know under the Algonkian name of wigwam in which the Iroquois Indians lived. The wigwams were of wagon-top shape with straight sides and ends, made by bending young trees to form the round shape. Over this shape pieces of tree bark were laid to protect the Indians from bad weather. Over the bark dried grass was added. A small hole allowed smoke to escape from the top. A classical guitarist was excited to hear from New York City police that his valuable guitar had been found. It disappeared almost a year ago when he got out of a cab and forgot to take the guitar with him. Laurence Lennon, 44, said he was running late that day. He was talking to his manager on his cell phone when he dashed out of the taxi. He said that he gave the driver $ 60 and told him to keep the change. He walked through the front doors of the concert hall still talking on the phone to his manager.Upon discovering his loss, Lennon used his cell phone to call the police. The policewoman asked him for the name of the cab company, the number of the cab, and the name of the driver. He said that she had to be kidding. She told Lennon that he could file a missing items report at the police station or online. Lennon asked for the online address. She told him that finding the guitar might take a couple of years—finding guitars was not as important as finding murderers and marijuana smokers. Then she told him to have a nice day.“This year has been depressing,” said Lennon. “I had to postpone the recording of two new CDs. I've been using borrowed guitars. And I was losing hope of ever recovering my guitar.”Lennon was reunited with his $ 100,000 musical instrument yesterday. The case and the guitar had been discovered in the corner of a coffee house only two blocks from where Lennon had lost it in the first place. Lennon had offered a $ 10,000 reward for its return. Study finds being sociable is good for your health, while loneliness is as bad for you as smoking15 cigarettes a day.A circle of close friends and strong family ties can improve a person’s health more than exercise, losing weight or quitting cigarettes and alcohol, psychologists say. Sociable people seem to benefit extra rewards from their relationships by feeling less stressed, taking better care of themselves and having less risky lifestyles than those who are more lonely, they say.A review of studies into the effect of relationships on health found that people had a 50% better survival rate if they belonged to a wider social group, be it friends, neighbors, relatives or a mix of these. The obvious effect of social connections on health has led researchers to call on health officials to take loneliness as seriously as other health risks, such as alcoholism(酗酒) and smoking. “We take r elationships for granted as humans,” said Julianne Holt-Lunstad, a psychologist at Brigham Young University in Utah. “ That continuous interaction(相互影响) is beneficial not only psychologically but physically.”Holt-Lun stad’s team reviewed 148 studies that followed the social interactions and health of 308,849 people over an average of 7.5 years. (湖北襄阳四中、龙泉中学、荆州中学联考)Are you an optimist? Do you look at your glass and see it as half full? Do you believe that every cloud has a silver lining and that things generally turn out for the best? Do you believe that if something is meant to be, it will be? If you reply “yes” to all of these questions, then you are an optimist. You probably are enthusiastic, cheerful and outgoing. You may be successful at work and in love. But you may be misguided because things don't turn out for the best. You may believe that when on door closes another one opens(for example, you may fail to obtain a new job; another chance will come around soon). Wrong. When one door closes, another door slams(砰然关上)in your face. That's bitter reality. Now a book has been published which confirms what pessimists(悲观者)have suspected all along. it's called The Positive Power of Defensive Pessimism. Its author argues that defensive pessimism can lead to positive results. Defensive pessimism is a strategy used to manage fear, anxiety and worry. Defensive pessimists prepare for the tings by setting low outcomes for themselves. They carefully consider everything that may go wrong and plan for ways to handle these problems. And this gives them a sense of control. Lawrence Sanno, a psychology professor, says, “What's interesting about defensive pessimists is that they tend to be very successful people, so their low opinion of the situation's outcomes is not realistic. They use it to motivate themselv es to perform better.”So far,so good. This is not rocket science. Defensive pessimists prepare carefully and consider what might go wrong, whether at work, on date or even in a sports game. It makes sense to have a back-up plan. There are many sayings in English urging caution. For example, “Don't put all your eggs in o ne basket.”And “Don't count your chickens until they hatch.” To have a confident and optimistic approach to life's problems is good. But listen to what Woody Alien, the American comedian says ,”Confidence is what you have before you understand the problem.”There are pros and cons to being an optimist and a pessimist. Don't feel bad if you see the glass half empty. You are a realist But lighten up and hook up with someone who sees the same glass half full.1.What's the passage mainly about?A. A book that has recently been published.B.How to become successful in lifeC.The dangers of being too optimistic.D.The benefits of defensive pessimism.2.The underlined sentence “ This is not rocketscience”(Para.4)means .A.it's not a dangerous thing to doB.it is quite simple to understandC.the cost is not so highD.there is no real proof3.which of the following English expressions would a defensive pessimist believe?A.Don't put all your eggs in one basket.B.The glass is half full not half empty.C.Whatever will be, will be.D.Every cloud has a silver lining.4.The writer would probably describe himself as .A.An optimistB. a defeatistC. a realistD. a scientist语篇解读本文是一篇说明文,主要说明的是防御非观主义的积极力量。

Human remains of ancient settlements will be reburied and lost to science under a law that threatens research into the history of humans in Britain, a group of leading archaeologists(考古学家) says. I a letter addressed to the justice secretary, Ken Clarke, 40 archaeologists write of their “deep and widespread concern” about the issue. It centers on the law introduced by the Ministry of Justice in 2008 which requires all human remains unearthed in England and Wales to be reburied within two years, regardless of their age. The decision means scientists have too little time to study bones and other human remains of national and cultural significance.“Your current requirement that all archaeologically unearthed human remains should be reburied, whether after a standard period of two years or further special extension, is contrary to basic principles of archaeological and scientific research and of museum practice,”they write. The law applies to any pieces of bone uncovered at around 400 dig sites, including the remains of 60 or so bodies found at Stonehenge in 2008 that date back to 3,000 BC. Archaeologists have been granted a temporary extension to give them more time, but eventually the bones will have to be returned to the ground. The arrangements may result in the waste of future discoveries at sites such as Happisburgh in Norfolk, where digging is continuing after the discovery of stone tools made by early humans 950,000 years ago. If human remains were found at Happisburgh, they would be the oldest in northern Europe and the first indication of what this species was. Under the current practice of the law those remains would have to be reburied and effectively destroyed. Before 2008, guidelines allowed for the proper preservation and study of bones of sufficient age and historical interest, while the Burial Act 1857 applied to more recent remains. The Ministry of Justice assured archaeologists two years ago that the law was temporary, but has so far failed to revise it.Mike Parker Pearson, an archaeologist at Sheffield University, said: “Archaeologists have been extremely patient because we wee led to believe the ministry was sorting out this problem, but we feel that we cannot wait any longer.”The ministry has no guidelines on where or how remains should be reburied, or on what records should be kept.1. According to the passage, scientists are unhappy with the law mainly because _________.A. it is only a temporary measure on the human remainsB. it is unreasonable and thus destructive to scientific researchC. it was introduced by the government without their knowledgeD. it is vague about where and how to rebury human remains2. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?A. Temporary extension of two years will guarantee scientists enough time.B. Human remains of the oldest species wee dug out at Happisburgh.C. Human remains will have to be reburied despite the extension of time.D. Scientists have been warned that the law can hardly be changed.3. What can be inferred about the British law governing human remains?A. The Ministry of Justice did not intend it to protect human remains.B. The Burial Act 1857 only applied to remains uncovered before 1857.C. The law on human remains hasn’t changed in recent decades.D. The Ministry of Justice has not done enough about the law.4. Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?A. New discoveries should be reburied, the government demands.B. Research time should be extended, scientists require.C. Law on human remains needs thorough discussion, authorities say.D. Law could bury ancient secrets for ever, archaeologists warn.【参考答案】1—4、BCDD【浙江省2014模拟冲刺试题】CReading is a great way to improve your English. You'll learn new words, revise previously-taught structures and absorb thousands of useful expressions and phrases... without any effort. By reading, you are receiving valuable language input. And this is how you learn! Remember, language learning is a combination of input + practice. As you're reading, you're taking in language naturally, and you're seeing how it all fits together. This is crucial to your learning. The great thing about reading is that learning takes place subconsciously. There are no exercisesto do, no grammar rules to learn, no tasks to complete... it's all natural. The language flows in through your eyes, and gets registered(记录) in your brain. What could be easier? The key to effective reading is to read things that you want to read. There are millions of books, magazines and websites out there. You couldn't possibly read them all. So, the important thing is to find things that you like reading. Then, you'll be motivated to read. And then the reading won't be difficult. It'll be easy! And then you'll learn. It's simple.Remember: read what you want to read. What you like reading. What motivates and inspires you. But where can you start? Well, you could read a book that you've already read in your own language. Simply find a translated version of a book that you have read and enjoyed. This will make processing the content in the target language much easier as you’ll already know what the book is about! You could also read the news. This is great as you can read the news in your own language first, then in English. You'll see that it won't be too difficult as you'll be familiar with the topics and stories. Magazines are also great. Find one that covers a topic you're interested in: business, clothing, guns, horses, houses, housekeeping, stocks and shares, sports, computers, electronics, designing, cooking... you name it, they'll have it. If not, look for information on the internet. There are also websites for every topic under the sun! Why not join a forum? They're a great source of English input as the language is often written in a simple, spoken style. Go to Google Groups, which has discussion groups based on common interests. Just type in the topic that interests you and join the chat. Finally, how you read is also important. The best thing is to read without using a dictionary. Let the words flow over you. Just skip the parts you don't understand. If you make your reading feel too much like work, it'll stop being fun. Of course, you could make a note of any new words and phrases that you like or see repeated frequently, but try not to break your concentration too much. Also, set yourself mini-objectives. For example, if you're reading a novel, read 20 pages a day. Very soon, you'll have been exposed to thousands of useful phrases and words. Have fun reading! You'll learn so much!50. The underlined word “crucial” in the first paragraph is closest in meaning to_________________.A. easyB. importantC. difficultD. suitable51.
1.The underlined word“...” in the second(third...) paragraph refers to(means) ________.2.By saying “...” in the first(second...) paragraph, the author means that ________.3.In paragraph...,“...” can be replaced by “________”.4.The meaning of “...” in paragraph...is related to ________.5.Which of the following has the closest meaning to...(paragraph...)?6.The underlined sentence in the first(second...)paragraph probably means that ________.
It will be very hard but also very brittle — that is, it will break easily.从后面that is(也就是说)的解释中我们可以了解到brittle是“脆”的意思。
The herdsman,_who looks after sheep, earns about 650 yuan a year.定语从句中 looks after sheep 就表明了herdsman的词义为“牧羊人”。
例1 【2009·福建卷】…In his book, he had challenged readers to make deep cuts in personal emissions to keep the world from reaching extremely important tipping_points,_such as the melting(融化)of the ice sheets in Greenland or West Antarctica.…The underlined words “tipping points” most probably refer to “______”.A.freezing points B.burning pointsC.melting points D.boiling points【解析】 C 根据后一句的such as the melting(融化)of the ice sheets in Greenland or West Antarctica.可知tipping points的意思是“融点”。
2.根据同位关系进行猜测阅读中出现的难词有时后面紧跟一个同位语,对前面的词进行解释,这时可利用同位关系对前面或后面的词义或句意进行猜测。
例如:They traveled a long way, at last got to a_castle,_a large building in old times.同位语部分a large building in old times 给出了castle 的确切词义,即古时候的“城堡”。
We are on the_night_shift—from midnight to 8 a.m.— this week.两个破折号之间的短语很清楚地表明night shift 是“夜班”的意思。
The “Chunnel”, a tunnel(隧道) connecting England and France, is now complete.此句中a tunnel connecting England and France是Chunnel的同位语。
由此可知,The “Chunnel”就是英法之间的海底隧道。
