Unit OneSection A Love Without LimitationsClozeMy brother, Jimmy, suffered lack of oxygen during a difficult delivery, leaving him with brain damage. From then on, my family life revolved around his. My mother taught him practical things like how to brush his teeth. I was in charge outside where I administered justice by tracking down the parents whose kids picked on him, and telling on them. My father held the family together with such patience that Jimmy could not go anywhere without his company. But misfortune also loves company. My father and mother died respectively of a heart attack and lung cancer in 1991. As an immediate result of that, Jimmy, though under careful disguise, fell into a wreck, grasping that the world he’d known was gone for good. I pledged to help him out of it. Through my constant efforts, I was eventually able to work it out. Now he has lived in my parents’house for 11 years with many different caretakers and blossomed on his own. In fact, caring for someone who loves as deeply and appreciates my efforts as much as Jimmy does has enriched my life more than anything else ever could have. This hit home in the wake of the September 11th disaster, when I managed to hold a party for his 57th birthday. I called on my friends to make it a merry and festive occasion, ignoring the fact that the sheer terror had drained Americans of all happiness in those days. For Jimmy, however, the party was a welcome bonus, and mostly he had just wanted to see everyone else happy again. He made it in the end. Indeed, there had never been any limitations to what Jimmy’s love could accomplish.SummaryThe passage is a first person narration. Unit 1
My brother, Jimmy, was born with brain damage due to a difficult delivery. Accompanying my growing up was revolving around my brother’s life and protecting him from being picked on by other kids. Unfortunately, father, who was inseparable with Jimmy, died in 1991. Jimmy was a wreck and believed that the world he’d known was gone. Even worse, mother died six months later and I alone was left to look after Jimmy.
After that, Jimmy moved to New York City to live with me for a while. But he still longed to live in parents’ house and he finally returned. So far, he has lived there for 11 years and blossomed on his own. I held a party for Jimmy’ 57th birthday just a few days after 9·11 disaster, but no one of the family could come. I called on my friends to help who brought ideal presents and made it a festive and merry occasion.
I knew that the constant love and support of our friends and family would get us through all the hardships in life. There had never been any limitations to what Jimmy’s love could accomplish.
Unit 2
It is not infrequent for the bodies of endurance athletes to be deficient in iron. In particular, female athletes often have this problem. Even moderate exercise can cause the problem. A study indicated that formerly inactive women showed a decrease in iron levels. Iron deficiency affects many women, including exercising women, health-conscious women, etc.
There are 3 stages of iron deficiency. However, most people with low iron reserves don’t know they have a deficiency. So it’s advisable for people to have a yearly blood test. In addition, people are suggested to modify their diet or take supplements such as adding more iron-rich foods.
Unit 4
The Statue of Liberty is a monument built to celebrate the US independence and the France-America alliance. Holding a torch high, the statue expresses welcome to people who have affection for peace and liberty. Inspired by a German doll, Ruth designed her American version of dolls called Barbie. With long limbs and an exaggerated breast size, Barbie is shapely and beautiful. Guided by artistic theories, Wood created the portrait showing the solemn pride of American farmers. Unlike other coins in the US, the buffalo nickel honored a pair of connected tragedies, the destruction of both buffalo herds and American Indians. The story of Uncle Sam evolves from a man who inspected meat for the US Army during the war to liberate the American colonies. There are many versions of Uncle Sam’s portrait, but the most famous is in the recruiting poster, in which he is a tall man with a white beard on his chin.
Unit 6
Since earthquakes may cause great destruction, we need to learn how to detect them quickly. Animals always give us warnings. For example, before an earthquake hens would not enter their cages; rats run out from their hiding places and march fearlessly through houses; even normally quiet dogs bark in chorus (齐声) all over town. Pigeons are especially noisy and fly in unusual patterns. And most noticeable is a chemical change in ground water before a quake.
To prevent destruction of property, the architects design columns and horizontal beams of equal strengthen. Besides the efforts to improve building structures, people also should prepare their houses for the possibility of a great earthquake. It is advisable to check and reinforce their homes regularly. And remember to place heavy objects in low positions, attach cupboards and cabinets to walls, and so on. All these precautions can make a great difference in saving lives and prevent the loss of homes.
Unit 9
Signing agreements before marriage has become popular in the United States since 1980s. Premarital agreements are designed to solve problems like how to divide up financial assets if a couple divorces. Some people are strongly against them but others argue that there are several reasons for them: to protect the considerable accumulation of wealth of one of the spouses, to protect children from a previous marriage, to lay bare the responsibilities and save a couple from a terrible marriage, etc. With 50% of all marriages in America ending up in divorces, premarital agreements seem to be gaining in acceptance.。
