记不清有多少次我曾陪着西德尼·卡顿,像《双城记》结尾描述的那样,一步一步走上断头台,走向他所认为的最好的安息之所。
4 就像我读过的很多其他书一样,对我来说,我读的仿佛从来都不是一本书,而是去我曾经生活过或已经游玩过而且仍要故地重游的地方。
书中所有的人物—绿山墙的安妮、海蒂,杰伊·盖茨比,伊丽莎白·本内特,迪尔和斯考特—都比我所认识的现实生活中的人还要真实。
那时我的家在费城城外一个生活舒适的地方,但我实际却生活在别的地方。
我生活在那些书中,那些书比我生活中的其他任何事情都要更真实。
我上小学时背过的一首诗现在我仍然记得很清楚,那是艾米丽·狄更生的一首诗:“没有一艘快船能像一本书一样/带我们跨过万水千山/也没有一匹骏马能像一首小诗一样/昂首阔步,跳跃前行。
”5 或许只有在现实中得不到满足的孩子像我一样被书所吸引。
或许对读写能力的狂热就必定会让人不安分。
那时,在我家里有一把带有弯曲扶手的椅子,这把椅子还配有一个方形的脚凳,就放在客厅的一个角落里,旁边还有一张用酒桶和一块木板做成的桌子。
记忆力,我总是伸开四肢躺在椅子上看书,把细瘦的双腿搭在椅子的一个扶手上。
妈妈总是说:“今天的天气多好啊”。
无论春天还是秋天,甚至是刚下过雪的冬日,她也总是或经常这样说。
“你的朋友们都在外面呢”。
是的,我的朋友们总是爱在外面,来到大街上,来到田野里,来到小溪边。
我知道对一个小孩子来说,这是一种在正常不过的诱惑。
6 我还清楚的记得那时候的生活,记得在内勒河那条潺潺的小溪里,搬起石头寻找里面的小龙虾;我也记得在电车轨道上放上小分币,等电车经过后,再跑去把压扁的硬币取回。
但我内心中最美好的部分却仍是在家里,在我平摊在桌上以标记所读到的页码的某本书里,书中那些虚幻的人物还在等我回来将他们唤醒。
7从我躺在那把椅子看书的时候直到现在这些年里,我发现这么做的人不止我一个,尽管那时就我所知、就我的父母和朋友所知,我确实是唯一一个爱读书胜过爱玩的孩子。
在书中,我不但周游世界,也在自己的内心世界畅游。
通过读书,我了解了自己,知道自己想成为一个什么样的人,发现了心中的渴望,并且敢于对自己和自己的世界进行种种幻想。
通过读书,我学会了辨别善恶是非。
