Title: A Cognitive Construal Approach to the Narration in The Handmaid’s Tale Abstract: The oppression and resistance of women is a major theme embedded in The Handmaid’s Tale. Instead of lecturing on her readers, Margaret Atwood encourages readers to have their own interpretation of the character and the theme of the novel by deploying different narrative strategies. This study delineates the grammatical evidence of the dual narrative in The Handmaid’s Tale by analyzing the grammar of the fiction through the lens of cognitive construal. It is found that the construal of sequential scanning and high specificity highlight the distinctive mental self of Offred which facilitates an optimistic expectation of women’s resistance. On the other hand, the construal of summary scanning and low specificity form an ideological point of view from which the individuality and agency of Offred are undermined; this narrative foreshadows a dystopian pessimism in the interpretation of the theme.Key words: cognitive grammar; construal; narrative analysis; The Handmaid’s Tale Author: Yan Tianxin is postgraduate student in Applied Linguistics at University College London (London WC1H 0AL, UK).
What can you say about a twenty-five-year-old girl who died?
Harvard is like Santa’s Christmas bag. You can stuff any crazy kind of toy into it. But when the holiday’s over, they shake you out. Love means not ever having to say you’re sorry.

Love Story.Relationships are a huge part of the college experience. People are constantly meeting, dating or breaking up. Whatever your stance(姿态,态度) on relationships is, there are certain advantages and disadvantages to both sides. Some brave Harvard students have agreed to share their stories and heartaches for the benefit of us all.Juniors Alix Gerz and Pat O'Rourke met their freshman year, but have only recently become an official couple. "We tried just being friends for a while, but it just didn't work," says Gerz. "We got attached relatively quickly, and we've been together since March.""Looking back over the past 6 months, everything's going good," saidO'Rourke. "We're just taking it one day at a time."Some common problems in college relationships are issues such as busy and conflicting schedules(日程表), temptations(诱惑)to be with other peopleand the feeling of lacking independence and being tied down.O'Rourke and Gerz feel these hurdles(障碍)are easily overcome with alittle effort from both sides. "We're sympathetic to each other's schedules,so it's usually not hard to find time together. And we live close by, both at home and on campus, so that helps too," said Gerz."Communication is the most important thing," advises O'Rourke. "You have to have complete honesty and always try to be aware of the other person's feelings."On the occasion that quality time is running scarce(没有见面的时间时), these two keep the love fires burning by keeping in touch through e-mail messages, phone calls and the occasional handwritten note. "Both of us go out of our way to show how much we care," said O'Rourke.

The film tells of Oliver Barrett IV, who comes from a family of wealthy and well-respected Harvard University graduates. At Radcliffe library, the Harvard student meets and falls in love with Jennifer Cavalleri, a working-class, quick-witted Radcliffe College student. Upon graduation from college, the two decide to marry against the wishes of Oliver's father, who thereupon severs ties with his son.Without his father's financial support, the couple struggles to pay Oliver's way through Harvard Law School with Jenny working as a private school teacher. They rent the top floor of a house near the Law School at 119 Oxford Street, in the Agassiz neighborhood of Cambridge, adjacent to a local laundromat. Graduating third in his class at Harvard Law, Oliver takes a position at a respectable New York law firm. With Oliver's new income, the pair of 24-year-olds decide to have a child. After failing, they consult a medical specialist, who after repeated tests, informs Oliver that Jenny is ill and will soon die. While this is not stated explicitly, she appears to have leukemia. As instructed by his doctor, Oliver attempts to live a "normal life" without telling Jenny of her condition. Jenny nevertheless discovers her ailment after confronting her doctor about her recent illness. With theirdays together numbered, Jenny begins costly cancer therapy, and Oliver soon becomes unable to afford the multiplying hospital expenses. Desperate, he seeks financial relief from his father. When the senior Barrett asks if he needs the money because he got some girl "in trouble," Oliver says yes instead of telling his father the truth about Jenny's condition. From her hospital bed, Jenny speaks with her father about funeral arrangements, then asks for Oliver. She tells him to avoid blaming himself, and asks him to embrace her tightly before she dies. They lie together on the hospital bed.The novel also includes the double meaning of a love story between Oliver and his father, highlighted by the scene between Oliver and his father at the end of the book. When Mr. Barrett realizes that Jenny is ill and that his son borrowed the money for her, he immediately sets out for New York. By the time he reaches the hospital, Jenny is dead. Mr. Barrett apologizes to his son, who replies with something Jenny once told him: "Love means never having to say you're sorry."Erich Wolf Segal (June 16, 1937 –January 17, 2010) was an American author, screenwriter, and educator. Love Story in HarvardFrom Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia(Redirected from Love Story In Harvard)Jump to: navigation, search"Love Story in Harvard" should not be confused with the film "Love Story", also set at Harvard University.Love Story in HarvardStarring Kim Rae-wonKim Tae-heeLee Jung-jinCountry of origin South KoreaLanguage(s) KoreanNo. of episodes 16ProductionRunning time 60 minutesBroadcastOriginal channel SBSOriginal run November 22, 2004 – January 11, 2005External linksOfficial websiteLove Story in Harvard (Hangul: 러브스토리인하버드; Rubeusutori in Habeodeu) is a romantic 16-episode Korean drama television seriesbroadcast in 2004. It was well-received both in South Korea and throughout East Asia, though many mocked the poor English of the male leads (the female leads speak significantly better English). The story is set at Harvard University and tells of the love between a Harvard Law School student, Kim Hyun Woo (Kim Rae Won), and a Harvard Medical School student, Lee Soo In (Kim Tae Hee).Though the story is set at Harvard University, the series was actually filmed at the University of Southern California and the University of California, Los Angeles. The story is essentially about the lives of Kim Hyun Woo, Hong Jung Min, and Lee Soo In. Hyun woo and Jung Min, both first year law students, are rivals in class and for the affections of Soo In Lee. Jung Min applies himself more and as such is the favorite of Professor John H. Keynes (the strict Law professor, played by reputable Emmy-nominated actor and comedian Frank Gorshin, most famous for his role as the "Riddler" on the 1960s Batman (TV series)). Hyun Woo, who had a hard time adjusting to the workload in the beginning, falls into the bad graces of the professor. However, Hyun Woo perseveres and eventually wins the respect of Professor Keynes and his classmates. Both men meet Soo Inand fall for her. This intensifies the rivalry between them. The first part of the story is set at Harvard University (it was actually filmed at USC since they could not get permission to film it in Harvard). Hyun Woo first saw Soo In at a hotel where he thought she was a prostitute (it was evident from a couple of times when he saw her with a couple of men). This caused confusion between the two. In reality, Soo In is a third year medical student at Harvard. When Soo In found out Hyun Woo's impression of her, she let him believe what he wanted until the moment she was hired by Hyun Woo's girlfriend (childhood friend) to help him study medical malpractice case studies. Eventually Hyun Woo fell for her and Soo In for him while they studied. However, their relationship was short-lived as Soo In's application to join OEP, an organization that provides medical care to patients in Third World countries, was accepted. After their night together, Soo In left Hyun Woo, which devastated him.The next half of the story was set in Korea after Hyun Woo graduated from Harvard Law School. He was still idealistic and only accepted cases he believed in. Jung Min stayed in the US after graduation but returned to Korea to take on a case. Soo In also came back for a 2 month stay inKorea to conduct some research. And predictably they all met up again.Although Hyun Woo was still mad with how Soo In left him, he couldn't let her go. And although Alex was in US, he was still in love with Soo In. Before Soo In left for the second time, she and Hyun Woo promised to wait for each other. Unfortunately, on her way to the airport, she collapses and is brought to the hospital. At the hospital, Hyun Woo lies about the true nature of her illness because he didn't want her to leave him. This made Soo In stay.Characters of the story also included Y oo Jin Ah (Alex's fiance), Jason (the American who hired Alex's law firm to defend his international company) (Bernhard Quandt). A twist in the story happened when Hyun Woo and Jung Min met again as they were about to defend the same environmental case where Soo In was also involved. At that moment, Soo In learned she had T cell disease but chose not to tell Hyun Woo the truth. As the story was resolved, Hyun Woo learned about Soo In's illness and tried to tell Jason to find a cure for Soo In's illness for him to make his case win. At the end Jason was found guilty in an unexpected circumstance where Hong Jung Min appears in the final court trial as a witness against Jason and reports against Jason and his company and thefoundation (Which was used it to cover the traces of what DE chemicals done to the environment). Since Jason was jailed, the bone marrow donor for Soo-in lee came out to offer her bone marrow for the bone marrow transplant for curing her illness. In the end of the story Hyun Woo goes to U.S for continuing the case against DE chemicals in the U.S court to get the 50 times compensation for the affected people like he promised, Soo-in comes to the airport (fully recovered from the illness) to send off Hyun Woo,Hong Jung Min and others to the U.S. and by Soo-in's voice narrates the story more to say that Hyun Woo and soo-in live happily and have 3 children.。
