If you think that is a simple question, you have not been paying attention to the revolution that is taking place in bio-technology(生物技术). With the help of new medicine, the human body will last a very long time. Death will come mainly from accidents, murder and war. Today’s leading killers, such as heart disease, cancer, and aging itself, will become distant memories. In discussion of technological changes, the Internet gets most of the attention these days. But the change in medicine can be the real technological event of our times. How long can humans live? Human brains were known to decide the final death. Cells(细胞) are the basic units of all living things, and until recently, scientists were sure that the life of cells could not go much beyond l20 years because the basic materials of cells, such as those of brain cells, would not last forever. But the upper limits will be broken by new medicine. Sometime between 2050 and 2100, medicine will have advanced to the point at which every 10 years or so, people will be able to take medicine to repair their organs ( The medicine, made up of the basic building materials of life, will build new brain cells, heart cells, and so on—in much the same way our bodies make new skin cells to take the place of old ones.It is exciting to imaging that the advance in technology may be changing the most basiccondition of human existence, but many technical problems still must be cleared up on the way to this wonderful future.9.According to the passage, human death IS now mainly caused by .A、diseases and agingB、accidents and warC、accidents and agingD、heart disease and war10.In the author’ s opinion, today’s most important advance in technology lies in.A、medicineB、the InternetC、brain cellsD、human organ11.Humans may live longer in the future because .A、heart disease will be far away from usB、human brains can decide the final deathC、the basic materials of cells will last foreverD、human organs can be repaired by new medicine12.We can learn from the passage that .A、human life will not last more than 120 years in the futureB、humans have to take medicine to build new skin cells nowC、much needs to be done before humans can have a longer lifeD、we have already solved the technical problems in building new cellsDAmong all the malignancies (恶性肿瘤), lung cancer is the biggest killer: more than 10,000 Americans die of the disease a year. Giving up smoking is one of the obvious ways to reduce the risk, but another answer may lie in the kitchen. According to a new report, even heavy smokers may be protected from developing lung cancer by a simple dietary measure: a daily portion of carrots, spinach or any other vegetable or fruit containing a form of vitamin A called carotene (胡萝卜素).The finding, published in the British medical journal TheLancet, is a part of a long-range investigation of diet and disease. Since 1957 a team of American researchers has monitored the dietary habits and medical histories of 2,000 middle-aged men employed by the Western Elect ric Co. in Chicago. Led by Dr Richard Shekelle of Chicago’s Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Medical Center, the researchers recently began to sort out the links between the subjects’ dietary patterns and cancer. Other studies of animals and humans have suggested that vitamin A offers some protection against lung cancer. The connection seems logical, explains Shekelle, since vitamin A is essential for the growth of the epithelial (上皮的) tissue that lines the airways of the lungs. But the earlier research did not distinguish between two different forms of the vitamin. Preformed vitamin A is found mainly in liver and dairy products like milk, cheese, butter and eggs. But vitamin A is also made in the body from carotene, which is abundant in a variety of vegetables and fruits, including carrots, spinach, squash (南瓜), tomatoes, sweet potatoes and apples. In the Western Electric study, Shekelle and his colleagues found few connections between the incidence of lung cancer and the consumption of foods containing preformed vitamin A. But when they examined the data on carotene intake, they discovered a significant relationship. Among the 488 men who had the lowest level of carotene consumption, there were fourteen cases of lung cancer; in a group of the same size that ate the most carotene, only two cases developed. The apparent protective effect of carotene helps even longtime smokers, but to a lesser degree.Further studies will be necessary before the links between lung cancer and carotene can be firmly established. In the meantime, researchers warn against large numbers of vitamin A pills, because the tablets contain a form of the chemical that can be extremely poisonous in high doses. Instead, they advise a well-balanced diet that includes foods rich in carotene. For a smoker, half a cup of carrots every day might make the difference between life and death.13. Which of the following might be most helpful for people to avoid getting lung cancer?A. Eating vegetables containing carotene every day.B. Giving up smoking right now.C. Eating more fresh fruits every day.D. Eating a simple everyday diet.14. From Paragraph 2 we can learn that ________.A. Shekelle has been researching lung cancer since 1957B. the links between diet and lung cancer were discovered by Shekelle himselfC. Shekelle got the finding after monitoring 2,000 men for many yearsD. the researchers have investigated the relationship between diet and disease for half a century15. The examinations on groups of people of the same size showed that ________.A. few people got lung cancer because most of them have a well-balanced dietB. the incidence of lung cancer is closely related to the intake of caroteneC. the intake of carotene has little protective effect on longtime smokersD. the result of the earlier research is false and of no useII. 完形填空(30分)In our discussion with people on how education can help them succeed in life, a woman remembered the first meeting of an introductory__16__course about 20 years ago.The professor __17__the lecture hall, placed upon his desk a large jar filled with dried beans (豆), and invited the students to _18_how many beans the jar contained. An Israeli law banning too-skinny models went into effect with the start of 2013. The law, approved last March in Israel, requires models to prove they have maintained a Body Mass Index (BMI) of at least 18.5 for three months before a fashion show. That means a woman who is 5’8” tall can weigh no less than 119 pounds.“This law is another step in the war against eating disorders,” said physician Adatto. “Underweight models,” he explained, “can no longer serve as rold models for innocent young people who copy their false image of being skinny.”But some critics in this country say it is misguided, focusing on weight instead of health. They also say the Israeli ban is bound to fail because of the strong power of the fashion industry. “I think it’s an approach that isn’t going to work.” Said eating disorder expert Susan Ice, who worked with an organization wich creates a healthy working environment for models. But Adatto told the reporter told the reporter that he began to concern the issue after meeting an aspiring model who looked like she needed to be hospitalized. He said. "I realized that on ly legislation can change the situation. There was no time to waste, so many girls were dieting to death."However, the efforts to regulate models’s weight in Spain and Italy have not resulted in part because of difficulties in determining reliable methods of measuring weight and health."?Still, folks including Ice say there's no denying that images from Hollywood and the fashion industry can be difficult for young women to deal with. The legal limit for driving after drinking alcohol is 80 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilite rs of blood, when tested. But there is not sure way of telling how much you can drink before you reach this limit. It varies with each person depending on our weight, your sex, if you’ve just eaten and what sort of drinks you’ve had. Some people might reac h their limit after only about three standard drinks. In fact, your drinking ability can be affected by just one or tow drinks. Even if you’re below the legal limit, you could still be taken to court if a police officer thinks your driving has been affected by alcohol. It takes about an hour for the body to get rid of the alcohol in one standard drink. So, if you have a heavy drinking session in the evening you might find that your driving ability is still affected the next morning, or you could even find t hat you’re still over the legal limit. In addition, if you’ve had a few drinks at lunchtime, another one or tow drinks in the early evening may well put you over the legal limit. In a test with professional drivers, the more alcoholic drinks they had had t he more certain they ere that they could drive a test course through a set of moveable posts and the less able they were to do it !So the only way to be sure you’re safe is not to drink at all.Alcohol is a major cause of road accidents. One is three of the drivers killed in road accidents have levels of alcohol which are over the legal limit, and road accidents after drinking are the biggest cause of death among young men. More than half of people stopped by the police to take a breath analyzer test have a blood alcohol concentration of more than twice the legal limit. It is important to remember that driving after you’ve been drinking doesn’t just affect you. If you’re involved in an accident it affects a lot of other people as well, not least the perso n you might kill or injure.1. Which of the following statements is NOT true?A. Three standard drinks may cause some people to reach the legal limit.B. There is no sure way of telling how much you can drink before you reach the legal limit.C. The legal limit for driving after drinking is 0.008 gm of alcohol in 100 milliliters of blood.D. Dieting can be a real challenge so setting realistic goals and remaining focused on them is important. No notebooks, no textbooks, no test paper. Nor are there any pencils or pens, which always seem to run out of ink at the critical moment.A “paperless classroom” is what more and more schools are trying to achieve.Students don’t do any handwriting in this class. Instead, they use palm size, or specially-designed computers. The teacher downloads texts from Internet libraries and sends them to every student’s personal computer.Having computers also means that students can use the Web. They can look up information on any subject they’re stud ying from math to social science.High school teacher Judy Harrel in Florida, US, described how her class used the Web to learn about the war in Afghanistan (阿富汗) before.“We could touch every side of the country through different sites from the forest t o refugee camps (难民营)”, she said. “Using a book that’s three or four years old is impossible.”And exams can go online too. At a high school in Tennessee, US, students take tests on their own computers. The teacher records the grades on the network for everyone to see and then copies them to his own electronic grade book.A paperless classroom is a big step towards reducing the waste of paper. High school teacher Stephanie Sorrell in Kentucky, US, said she used to give about 900 pieces of paper each week to each student.“Think about the money and trees we could save with the computer,” she said. But, with all this technology, there’s always the risk that the machines will break down. So, in case of a power failure or technical problems, paper textbooks are still widely available for these hi-tech students.46. Just three years later, estimates were almost double that.A study of six big-city Ohio public schools showed students who were required to wear uniforms had improved graduation, behavior and attendance rates. Academic performance was unchanged. Some middle and high schools in Texas have also joined the movement. Yet studies find mixed results from requiring uniforms. And some schools have turned away from such policies.Supporters believe dressing the same creates a better learning environment and safer schools. The school district in Long Beach, California, was the first in the country to require uniforms in all elementary and middle schools. The example helped build national interest in uniforms as a way to deal with school violence and improve learning.Findings in Long Beach suggested that the policy resulted in fewer behavior problems and better attendance. But researcher Viktoria Stamison, who has looked at those findings, says they were based only on opinions about the effects of uniforms. She says other steps taken at the same time to improve schools in Long Beach and statewide could have influenced the findings. The district increased punishments for misbehavior. And California passed a law to reduce class sizes. In Florida, for example, researcher Sharon Pate found that uniforms seemed to improve behavior and reduce violence. In Texas, Eloise Hughes found fewer discipline problems among students required to wear uniforms, but no effect on attendance.Sociologist David Brunsma has studied school uniform policies since nineteen ninety-eight. He collected thereports in the book. In his own study, he found that reading and mathematics performance dropped after a school in rural Pennsylvania required uniforms.Political and community pressures may persuade schools to go to uniforms to improve learning. But David Brunsma and others believe there is not enough evidence of a direct relationship. In fact, he says requiring uniforms may even increase discipline problems.52. A mordant helps fix the dye to the material. Traditionally, mordants were found in nature. Wool ash is one example. But chemical mordants such as alum are popular today. Alum is sold in many stores. It is often mixed with cream of tartar, a fine powder commonly used in cooking.Mix eight grams of alum with seven grams of cream of tartar in a small amount of hot water. Add the solution to a metal pan of cool water. Next, add the wool and place the mixture over heat. Slowly bring the liquid to eighty-two degrees Celsius. Heat the mixture for forty-five minutes. After it cools, remove the wool and wash it.To prepare the dye solution, cover thirty grams of onionskins with water. Use only the dry, brown outer skins. Boil the liquid until the onionskins lose their color, about forty-five minutes. Remove the skins after the dye cools. Now it is time to dye the wool. Place the wool into the dye and heat the mixture. Bring it to a boil, then immediately reduce the heat to eighty-two degrees. Now heat the dye for about forty-five minutes or until the wool is the desired color. They want to do everything they watch on TV and never think of the consequences, and they may hurt a classmate or a teacher. On the other hand, parents are not fully satisfied with the children’s results obtained i n classes and they consider private classes would have better results. When a teacher has to watch 30 students in class he can’t probably see what each of them is doing, how he is writing, or if he understands the explanations. At home the teacher can explain in details everything the child doesn’t understand as many times as he considers proper. And many times the child grows fond of the teacher at home, who becomes his best friend, and who helps him whenever he needs someone to talk to.However, the best solution would be a mixture between the education received at school and that at home, because school makes children communicate and socialize.Keeping a child at home for fear there might happen something bad to him only makes the child’s character weak and prevents him from knowing what real life is.Staying in a crystal ball only does harm to the child. All in all, schools have been created to help children, not to harm them, so it’s best to keep children in these special places, where they learn, laugh, have fun and make new friends.31. The writer’s purpose in writing the text is to ________.A. teach parents the ways to keep their children safeB. show solutions to developing children’s characterC. explain the main reason for violence acts in schoolsD. analyze an education problem and give opinions32. Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?A. Advantages and Disadvantages of Private ClassesB. Who is to Blame, Parents or Schools?C. We can infer from the passage that ________.A. violence TV programs have bad effects on children’s behaviorB. the teacher at home is more patient than the teacher at schoolC. children today are weak from lack of sense of right and wrongD. there are too many students in class for a teacher to teachBAre you feeling stressed out? Anxious? Is your mind racing in circles? Are you worried about all the things you have to get done? Here’s a quick—acting trick that can make you feel better. If you are sitting at a desk, place the palm of your hand on the desk, and take a moment to focus on what the surface of the desk feels like. Is it hot or cold, rough or smooth? Put all of your attention on the sensations in your palm, on how the desk feels under your hand. If you are not at a desk, do the same exercise by placing your palm on any nearby object—a wall, a chair, even your opposite arm. When you are feeling stressed, your thoughts tend to take on a life of their own. You may be thinking about things you wish you had done differently in the past or worrying about things that you have to do in the future. These thoughts will make you feel anxious. The anxiety, in turn, increases the number of anxious thoughts. If you can ground yourself even for a moment in the present, you will break the cycle and feelinstant relief. Paying attention to what objects in your environment feel like forces you to pay more attention to the present moment than to negative, anxiety—provoking (刺激的,诱发的)thoughts about the past or about the future.Try using your other senses too:Try closing your eyes for a second(don’t try this while driving!) and breathe deeply through your nose. What do you smell? When eating, put all your attention on how your food tastes. What do you hear? What little noises are there around you that you didn’t notice before?Look closely at an ordinary object. Do yo u see anything you haven’t noticed before?35. By saying“Is your mind racing in circles”, the author intends to mean that______.A. you did something wrong in the past and wouldn’t forgive yourselfB. your mind is quick and bright when in a state of anxietyC. you are thinking in a stupid way when anxious thoughts worries you a lotD. you worried a lot and the anxious thoughts will increase your anxiety36. The author advises to put your palm on the desk or any things nearby in order to ____A. play a small trickB. feel the surface of the objectC. do some exercisesD. reduce your anxiety37. The writer mentioned some senses that could be used to reduce stress except the _____.A. sense of touchingB. sense of smellC. sense of humourD. sense of listening38. Albert Einstein and Pablo Picasso were not yet born. The Eiffel Tower was 14 years from being built. As a teenager, she met Vincent Van Gogh, near her home in Arles, in the south of France. He was “very ugly, ungracious, impolite, sick—I forgive him, they called him loco.” She recalled. When she died last week at age 122, she was the world’s oldest person. (There were others who claimed to the title, but only Calment had the official documents to prove her age) Each February 21, her birthday, she would share the secrets o f long life. Some years it was “a sense of humor”, others it was “keeping busy”. “God may have forgotten me,” she once explained. The truth probably was that she had good genes. Her mother reportedly lived to be 86 and her father 94.Her life had its sadness: she outlived her husband, her only daughter and her grandson. According to a friend, she was imperturbable. “If you can’t do anything about it,” she reportedly said, “don’t worry about it.”In her last years she was nearly blind and deaf, but her health remained good. She ate a few bars of chocolate each week and continued smoking until a few years ago, when she could no longer light her own cigarettes. She never lost her sense of humor. What about dancing in a rainy field with one hundred and fifty thousand other people while a famous rock band plays on a stage so far away that the performers look like ants?It may sound strange but that is what many hundreds of thousands of young people in the UK do every summer. Why? Because summer is the time for outdoor music festivals.Held on a farm, the Glastonbury Festival is the most well-known and popular festival in the UK.It began in 1970 and the first festival was attended by one thousand five hundred people each paying an admission price of £1 — the ticket included free milk from the farm.Since then the Glastonbury Festival has gone from strength to strength —in 2004 one hundred and fifty thousand fans attended, paying £112 each for a ticket to the three-day event.Tickets for the event sold out within three hours.Performers included superstars, such as Paul McCartney and James Brown, as well as new talent, like Franz Ferdinand and Joss Stone.Although many summer festivals are run on a profit-making basis, Glastonbury is a charity event, donating millions of pounds to local and international charities.Glastonbury is not unique in using live music to raise money to fight global poverty. In July of this year, the Live 8 concerts were held simultaneously (同时)in London, Paris, Rome and Berlin.Superstars such as Madonna, Sir Elton John and Stevie Wonder performed in order to highlight(突出;强调;使显著) international poverty and debt.47. What do es the author mean by saying “the Glastonbury Festival has gone from strength to strength”?A. The festival has achieved growing success.B. Great efforts have been made to hold the festival.C. The festival has brought in a large amount of money.D. There have been thousands of fans attending the festival.48. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?A. 得夺市安庆阳光实验学校高二上学期英语月考测试10月满分(150)第二部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)AI was in a shopping mall recently, and I decided to go and get a cup of tea. As I was making my way to the coffee shop, I noticed an old gentleman rather poorly dressed sitting on a bench nearby. I knew from the first sight that he was in need of some kind of help. He had a little lunch in front of him and was wholeheartedly enjoying it.There was a young man in front of me in the line also waiting to be served. The young man handed the servant a twenty-dollar bill and asked for an orange juice as well as a favor. The servant looked at the young man with a little surprise, not fully understanding him. The young man asked her to give the juice to the old gentleman eating his lunch outside on the bench. The young man also told her that he would be watching every second so that she would be completely safe at all times. Later, there was a wonderful exchange (交换) between the waitress and the old man.I only wished I had taken a photo of the smiles on both of their faces. As I was thinking about this event later on, I wondered why the young man didn’t just perform this act of kindness himself. I thought he was hoping that this act of kindness might inspire others to do something for the old man as well. Thinking of the happy smiles on the old man’s face, I felt how worthwhile it is to help others.21. The underlined word “favor” in Para. 2 refers to .A. passing the young man a cup of orange juiceB. buying lunch for the old manC. giving the juice to the old manD. exchanging meals with the old man22. Which of the following can be used to describe the young man?A. Humorous and helpful.B. Generous and proud.C. Rich and friendly.D. Kind and considerate.23. We are big supporters of buying locally and we are here to tell you why it is so important for your family, the community and the environment. The concept (概念) of buying locally is simple: buy food produced, grown, or raised as close to your home as possible. Not only will your food be fresher and tastier, but you are helping protect the environment and are supporting businesses within your community and reducing pollution.Better for the environmentSustainability (持续性) and global warming are such hot topics at the moment, and many people want to do their bit to help support a healthier environment. Small action carried out by many people can make a big difference. Most materials in an average North American meal have traveled about 1,500 miles to get from farm to plate. To cut out a big part of this travel would greatly reduce not only pollution from transportation and refrigeration but also customers’ expenses as well.Taste and nutritional contentLocally-grown fruits and vegetables are usually sold within 24 hours of being harvested. Because they are picked at the height of ripeness (成熟) and travel only a short distance to the market, their freshness, nutrition, and flavor are kept. Produce trucked in from far away may lose both taste and nutritional content.Community and home valuesWhen you buy direct from a farmer or buy locally-grown foods, you are engaging in a time-honored tradition between a grower and an eater. You also help keep dollars within your community.24. It can be inferred from the third paragraph that .A. global warming is the most serious problem nowB. the increased cost of transporting food is passed on to the customersC. North American food is rich in various kinds of materialsD. most people support buying locally25. What does the passage mainly talk about?A. The benefits of buying locally.B. The popularity of the Horn of Plenty.C. The importance of protecting the environment.D. The way to keep your food tasty and healthy.CPeople often say that money talks. They mean that a person with a lot of money can say how he or she wants things done. But it is not easy to earn enough money to gain this kind of power.Sometimes people in business feel businesses are as dangerous as wild animals in a jungle. They have to be careful if they are to survive the jungle out there. They must not be led into making bogus investments (). Bogus means something that is not real. It was said that the word came from a criminal (罪犯) whose name was Borghese. Borghese wrote checks to people although he didn’t have money. After he wrote the checks, he would disappear. So, people who were paid with his checks received nothing.People trying to earn money also must be aware of being ripped off.A person who is ripped off has had something stolen, or at least has been treated unfairly. To keep from getting ripped off in business, people had better try to earn money step by step instead of getting rich quickly. To be successful, a person in business works hard and tries to get down to brass tacks. For example, a salesman may talk about his product without saying the price. You get down to brass tacks when you say, “It sounds good, but how mu ch does it cost?” Word experts thought the expression came from sailors on ships. They cleaned the bottom of a boat. After they finished, they were down to the brass tacks, the copper pieces that held the boat together. So, if we get down to brass tacks, we can avoid rip-offs and bogus ways of earning money.28. What would happen to those people who make bogus investments?A. They would lose a lot of money.B. They would disappear after that.C. They would receive nothing but checks.D. They were more likely to be punished by law.29. The best way to avoid being ripped off in business is to .A. work as hard as possibleB. ask for checks in advanceC. avoid becoming wealthy eagerlyD. earn as more money as you can30. When doing business, people prefer to get down to brass tacksto .A. keep themselves from being fooledB. develop more ways of earning moneyC. reduce their production costsD. get in touch with more partners31. In which part of a newspaper can we find this passage?A. News and business.B. The history of language.C. Words and their stories.D. Funny new expressions. DMore often than not, people will look at the phone screen to check for new messages or have a quick look at Facebook. Researchers have now found why we often feel such a strong need to look at our phones. Using the mobile phone, they say, is contagious (蔓延的).A team says people are twice as likely to pull out their phones to check their text messages or e-mails if they’re with someone that has just done the same. They also found that women were more likely to use their mobile phones than men. The team watched students in dining halls and coffee shops around the college, observing pairs of college students sitting at tables for as long as 20 minutes and recording their cellphone use. “What we found most interesting was just how often people were using their mobile phones,” Dr. Daniel Kruger, the study’s co-author, said. “Every person we studied used his or her phone at least once while one woman was on hers about half of the time. People saw others checking their incoming messages and began to check their own.”“Cellphones create another choice for one’s attention and may both support and disagre e with live social activities,” the researchers wrote. Kruger believed this could be explained by the effects of social inclusion (包含) and exclusion (排除). If one person in a pair starts a conversation through his phone, the other one may feel excluded and then feel the need to get in touch with others so as not to feel left out.The researchers note that they might not get the same result in a study of different people—for example, older adults, who may not havea habit of using cellphones so often.32. From the study we can learn that .A. people can affect each other in using mobile phonesB. using mobile phones has nothing to do with social activitiesC. men are more likely to be affected by others’ using mobile phonesD. the sound of mobile phones makes using mobile phones contagious33. If old adults are studied, the researchers .A. will find that old adults don’t like to use mobile phonesB. will find that mobile phones are harmful to healthC. will no longer like using mobile phonesD. may reach a different result34. Which can best describe the author’s attitude towards using mobile phones?A. Supportive.B. Objective.C. Indifferent.D. Opposed.35. Which can be the best title for the passage?A. How to use mobile phones correctlyB. Why college students like mobile phonesC. Relation between mobile phones and people’s hobbiesD. It is the first US city to take such a strong step to keep this technology under control. When a computer system identifies a person from their face in a picture, it’s called “facial recognition” (面部识别). Many police departments use facial recognition. It can be helpful when the police just have a picture of a suspect (嫌疑犯),but no other information. Normally, even with facial recognition the police must have other proof showing that a person is guilty. But many people say facial recognition programs aren’t good enough yet. The programs can usually recognize white men. But they’re not so good at identifying women and people with darker skin. They worry that “false matches” --- when the computer thinks it has identified a person, but it’s wrong --- will make innocent (无罪的) people look like criminals. For companies like Amazon and Microsoft, facial recognition is a big business. Amazon has worked hard to sell their facial recognition to police departments around the US. Microsoft sells tools that allow prisons to watch people inside. To work well, facial recognition programs must have a great number of pictures of people. But most people whose pictures are in the systems never gave permission (许可) for their pictures to be used. Many people worry that using computers to identify or track people will decrease freedom. Now, in many places, facial recognition is used to keep people under control and much of public life is watched on security cameras. Similarly, many cities in America and Europe are also almost completely covered by security cameras. Police officers now often wear cameras on their bodies, recording all the time. It’s usually not clear when governments are using facial recognition and how they are using it.Facial recognition is already being used at airports throughout Europe and in the US. The Department of Homeland Security expects to have picture of 97% of the people flying out of the country in the next four years. As these powerful computer programs become more common, San Francisco’s move to control facial recognition is an unusual and strong move to limit the way governments use computers to watch and control people.28.Why do people worry about facial recognition programs?A.They cannot multiply people’s responsibility.B.They cannot help the police identify good people.C.They will mistake innocent people for bad people.D.They will identify black people instead of white people.29.How can facial recognition programs function effectively?panies should work with each other.B.People should have more pictures taken.C.They should include as many pictures as possible.D.Police departments and prisons should be under control.30.What make people feel their freedom is on the decrease?A.There are the police everywhere.B. A lot of security cameras are used.C. More people are forced to stay at home.D. Governments focus more on facial recognition.31. What’s San Francisco’s attitude towards government workers using facial recognition?A. DisapprovingB. SupportiveC. DoubtfulD. Optimistic5.(8分)DMany people think of the brain as a mystery(神秘).They don’t know much about intelligence and how it works. When they think about what intelligence is, many people believe that a person is born either smart, average, or dumb(愚笨的)—and stays that way for life. But new research shows that the brain is more like a muscle — it changes and gets stronger when you use it.And scientists have been able to show just how the brain grows and gets stronger when you learn.Everyone knows that when you lift weights, your muscles get bigger and you get stronger.A person who can’t lift 20 pounds when they start exercising can get strong enough to lift 100 pounds after working out for a long time. That’s because the muscles become larger and stronger with exercise. And when you stop exercising, the muscles shrink(萎缩)and you get weaker. That’s why people say, “Use it or lose it!”But most people don’t know that when they practice and learn new things, parts of their brain change and get larger a lot like muscles do when they exercise.Inside the cortex (脑皮层)of the brain are billions of tiny nerve cells(神经细胞).Communication between these brain cells is what allows us to think and solve problems. When you learn new things, these tiny connections in the brain actually multiply and get stronger. The more you challenge your mind to learn, the more your brain cells grow. Then, things that you once found very hard or even impossible to do seem to become easy. The result is a stronger and smarter brain.Scientists started thinking that the human brain could develop and change when they studied animals’ brains. They found out that animals who lived in a challenging environment, with other animals and toys to play with, were more “aptitudinal”—they were better at solving problems and learning new things.32.What’s the main idea of the passage?A.Scientists show strong interest in what intelligence is.B.A new study shows the brain can be developed like a muscle.C.Both muscles and the brain are important to humans.D.Intelligence exists in both humans and animals.33.By using such numbers as 20 and 100 in Paragraph 2,the author tries to provethat .A.exercise plays an important role in keeping muscles strongerB.exercise is more important to people than most of the animalsC.everyone can keep healthy if they do enough exercisesD.everyone should learn as many new things as possible34.Like stronger muscles come from exercise, smarter brains need .A.to be well taken care of B.a good communication between personsC.help from scientists D.our learning new things35.What does the underlined word “aptitudinal” in the last paragraph probably mean? Even now your aspirations(志向,抱负)may have changed from when you were in primary school. However, it seems career options aren’t only based on personal taste. In a survey carried out by Teens, doctors, lawyers, and bankers were some of most popular careers that people said they hoped to follow. This is in line with a similar survey carried out in the UK in May 2011 by job , in which medicine was the top choice among UK teenagers aged between 13 and 17.Medicine and law are two of the oldest and best known professions. Their prestige (威望) may come from the fact that doctors and lawyers are much-respected members of society, and they make good money. What’s more, these professions are often seen as a sign of upward social mobility. It is equally unsurprising that banking is now one of the most common career choices. Youngsters worldwide think of banking and see the money rolling in. Wealth is increasingly becoming one of the most important indicators(标志) of a successful career. British young men list the UK tycoon(巨头,大亨) Alan Sugar, Microsoft founder Bill Gates and Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg as their top role models “for their wealth”. Just as Chinese teenagers see being a banker as a good and fun way to “wealth”.However, not every child has the makings of doctor, lawyer, or banker. They are those who see achievement and happiness in other areas, and many teenagers dare to ink more individuality into their career options. As the Teens’ survey discovered, a variety of unconventional jobs---coffee shop owner, gourmet(美食家),waiter at a fast food restaurant---are among teenagers’ career choices. They can be equally interesting and rewarding jobs. With every choice comes responsibility and challenge, and all career paths require specific education and training, you have to learn to balance optimism(乐观主义)and confidence with being realistic about your particular talents and skills.61. Specific education and training can help get a good job.C. Responsibility is the most important when you choose a good job.D. Optimism and confidence is more important than being realistic whenCIs it necessary for a young man to have an apartment as a prerequisite(先决条件)for marriage? Housing has become a major obstacle(障碍)for Chinese young men hoping to start a family. China may breed a new group of bachelors, men caught in the trap of unaffordable houses.Since early 2009, the housing market has once again become a hot pot at boiling point. Even with allowance(津贴)and special government policies, home prices in China's first-tier cities such as Beijing and Shanghai are riding the crest(波峰)of a rising wave. According to the "2010 China Marital Status Report" released on Dec 15, 2010, about 70 percent of women interviewed said that housing, a stable income and some savings were the main requirements for marriage. From the report, we can see that housing is given top priority(优先权)and that women see an apartment as essential(必不可少的) to show that the man is responsible and can provide for his family.Personality and morals lay outside the top three matrimonial (婚姻的)requirements. Some women and their families hold the traditional position and take it for granted that the home issue should be the man's responsibility, which doesn’t agree with the contemporary independent spirit of women and gender equality. These marriage values reflect the fact that many women consider marriage another form of "social welfare".Things may be different overseas. Social housing, provided by European authorities, offer the less wealthy people their own piece of real estate. Such housing is usually apartments in tall buildings with 10 or more floors on the outskirts of town, whose main advantage is the low rents. For many Americans, houses don't pose an obstacle to getting married. They often buy a house after the wedding, because more and more people are reconsidering their real estate worship, andgoing back to a more rational(理性的) mode of consumption. In Japan, renting is the custom for newly married young couples. Few young couples can afford to purchase property. Up to 67.1 percent of young couples choose to rent. Generally speaking, renters account for most people younger than 40 in Japan.Young people should be free to enjoy being young, without the huge pressure of trying to buy property. Society should help create an environment for them to grow up. Don't let the poor bachelor group become a suffering layer(层)of our society.66. Which of the following is Not True according to the text?A. Home prices have been extremely high since early 2009.B. In the modern society, women don’t want to be independent.C. Chinese government has already done something to control home prices.D. Lots of Chinese young men couldn’t get married because of their economic capability.67. What does the underlined word “outskirts” probably mean?A. urban areasB. rural areas(乡下)C. suburbsD. downtown areas68. Why do many women take housing as one of the main requirements for marriage?A. Because they can’t afford a house.B. Because they enjoy their social welfare.C. Because their families want them to marry men with houses.D. Because they think it’s a symbol of the men’s sense of responsibility.69. The author uses the examples of European countries, America and Japan to show that__________?A. new couples in those countries like to rent housesB. the situation is different in some foreign countriesC. it’s better to live in those countries than live in ChinaD. their governments have done more than Chinese government70. Fill in the numbered blanks by using the information from the passage.Write NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS for each answer.G arlic (大蒜) is one of the most common spices of the kitchen, and the good news is that growing garlic indoors is simple. Garlic can be easily grown at home from individual cloves (瓣), which is the most commonly used form of cultivating garlic than growing garlic from seeds. Here are some useful tips on growing garlic indoors.Autumn is the best time to plant garlic. Garlic requires enough time to develop strong roots. In warmer climate, it can be delayed to late winter or early spring.Ensure the container used to grow garlic is large enough for the roots to have enough space to grow. The larger the size of the container, the healthier and bigger the garlic bulbs (鳞茎) will be. The container should also have holes at the bottom so that the water can drain (流走) out easily.Sow each clove vertically into the soil at a depth of one inch. Ensure that the blunt end (平端) is facing downward. In case of container gardening, the number of cloves to be sowed in each container depends on the size of the container. In case you are planning to sow more than one clove in each container, make sure that each clove is at least 5 inches apart from others. For the best growth of the garlic plant, choose a sunny spot where there is enough air circulation (流通). This will aid evaporation (蒸发) of too much amount of water and prevent the soil from becoming too damp in case too much watering does occur. Window sill (窗台) is a good place to put your container of garlic plant.Once the clove has been sowed, cover the soil with a layer of mulch (覆盖物) to protect the roots from extreme cold. Provide fertilizer at the correct time in right amounts, and proper watering. Once the garlic tips start appearing in the spring season, pull back the layer of mulch. Feed the plants once or twice every month with fertilizer.Section C (10 points)Directions: Read the following passage. Answer the questions according to the information given in the passage and required words limit. Write your answers on your answer sheet.Ugly, a male cat, loved three things in this world: fighting, eating garbage, and, shall we say, love. To start with, he had only one eye and where the other should have been was a big hole. He was also missing his ear on the same side, and his left foot appeared to have been badly broken at one time, making him look like he was always turning the corner. Every time someone saw Ugly there was the same reaction.“That’s one UGLY cat!”So, all the children were warned not to touch him. The adults threw rocks at him. Whenever he was treated badly, he would curl his thin body around feet in forgiveness or begged for love. One d ay Ugly shared his love with the neighbor’s dog. The dog's owner did not respond kindly. From my apartment I could hear his screams, and I tried to rush to his aid. By the time I got to where he was lying, it was apparent Ugly’s sad life was almost at an e nd. As I picked him up and tried to carry him home, I could hear his heavy breath, and could feel him struggling. It must be hurting him terribly. However, Ugly, in so much pain, suffering and obviously dying, was trying to get closer to me. He turned his one golden eye towards me, and even in the greatest pain Ugly was asking only for a little affection. At that time I thought Ugly was the most beautiful, loving creature I had ever seen. Never once did he try to bite or scratch me, or even try to get away from me. Ugly just looked up at me completely trusting in me to relieve his pain.Ugly died in my arms before I could get inside, but I sat and held him for a long time afterwards. Ugly taught me more about giving and compassion than a thousand books, lectures, or talk showspecials ever could, and for that I will always be thankful. It is time for me to learn to love truly and deeply.81. What reaction did people have when they saw Ugly? (No more than 8 words ) (2 marks)82. Why did the author try to rush to help him?
