DehydrationBehaviorofMetal-salt-addedMagnesiumHydroxideasChemicalHeatStorageMediaJunichiRyu,ÃNaoyaHirao,RuiTakahashi,andYukitakaKatoResearchLaboratoryforNuclearReactors,TokyoInstituteofTechnology,2-12-1-N1-22O-okayama,Meguro-ku,Tokyo152-8550(ReceivedAugust21,2008;CL-080800;E-mail:cyliu@nr.titech.ac.jp)Thedehydrationbehaviorsofmetal-salt-addedmagnesiumhydroxideaschemicalheatstoragemediawerestudied.Dehy-drationtemperatureofmagnesiumhydroxide,whichwascorre-spondingtoheatstoragetemperature,wasdroppedfrom277to233󰀂Cbyadditionoflithiumchloride.Theheatstoragecapacityof6.8wt%LiCl/Mg(OH)2(816MJmÀ3)was11timesashighasoneofauthenticMg(OH)2undertheheatstorageoperationat280󰀂C.Inrecentyears,thetechnologiesofchemicalheatpumpandchemicalheatstoragearewidelystudiedforthereductionofen-ergyconsumptionandCO2emission.Ifunutilizedthermalener-gysuchasindustrialwasteheat(e.g.,theheataround200󰀂Cfromdisposalfurnaces,theheataround300󰀂Cfromcogenera-tionsystemsandsoforth)canberecoveredandutilized,itwillcontributetosolvetheseproblems.Thus,chemicalheatstoragematerialthatcanbeusedataround200–300󰀂Cshouldbedevel-oped.Inviewofenvironmentalimpactandthetemperatureofheatsource,wateradsorptiononsilica-gel,1–3hydrationreactionofmetalsalt,1,2,4,5andhydrationreactionofmetaloxide1,2,6–8arepromisingreactionsamongthevariouschemicalheat-pumpsys-temsandchemicalheat-storagematerials.Achemicalheat-pumpsystemwiththereactionbetweenwatervaporandmagne-siumoxidehasbeenreportedbyourgroup.7,8MgO(s)þH2O(g)󰀁Mg(OH)2(s)ÁH󰀂¼À81kJmolÀ1Inthissystem,dehydrationofmagnesiumhydroxideasanoperationforheatstoragewouldproceedataround250󰀂Cther-modynamically;however,thermalenergyabove350󰀂Cisre-quiredforthereactionpractically.Thus,somemodificationofthismaterialisrequiredtobeapplicabletoheatutilizationbelow300󰀂C.Inthiswork,dehydrationbehaviorsofmetal-salt-addedmagnesiumhydroxidesasmaterialsforchemicalheatstoragewerestudiedtodropthepracticaldehydrationtemperatureofmagnesiumhydroxide.Thepossibilityofthesematerialsasnewchemicalheat-storagemediaisdiscussed.Metal-salt-addedmagnesiumhydroxideswerepreparedbyconventionalimpregnationmethod.Threetypesofmetalsalt,LiCl.H2O(99.9%;WakoPureChemicalIndustries,Ltd.(WPCI)),NaCl(99.5%;WPCI),CaCl2.2H2O(99.9%;WPCI)wereusedasadditives.Thesemetalsaltswerechoseninviewofthermalstabilityandhydrophilicity.Magnesiumhydroxide(0.07mmofdiameter,99.9%;WPCI)wasimpregnatedwithaqueousmetalsaltsolution,evaporatedat40󰀂Cwitharotaryevaporator,anddriedat120󰀂Covernight.HerethemolarratioofmetalsalttoMg(OH)2wasfixedat1:10or1:50.Here,met-al-salt-addedmagnesiumhydroxideiswrittenasLiCl/Mg(OH)2below.Themeasurementofdehydrationtemperatureofsampleswerecarriedoutfrom130to400󰀂Cwith5󰀂CminÀ1oftemper-ature-rampingratebythermogravimetricmethod,underevacu-atedconditionbelow0.1kPa.ThesamplewaschargedintoaPtcellofthethermogravimetricbalance(TGD9600;ULVAC-Riko)ashydroxidestate.Beforethemeasurement,samplewasdriedat130󰀂Cfor10minforremovingphysicallyadsorbedwater.Forthehydrationreactiontest,thesamplewaschargedintoaPtcellofthethermogravimetricbalanceashydroxidestate.Thecellwasheateduptothetemperatureofdehydrationoperation(Td)at280󰀂Cwith20󰀂CminÀ1oftemperature-ramp-ingrateandkeptatthetemperaturefor30minwith100mLminÀ1ofArflowasdehydrationoperation.Afterthat,dehydrat-edsampleinthebalancewascooleddowntothetemperatureofhydrationoperation(Th)at110󰀂Cwith100mLminÀ1ofArflow,andwatervaporwith57.8kPaofpartialpressure(PH2O)carriedwithArflowwasintroducedinthebalancefor80minashydrationoperation.Afterhydrationoperation,vaporsupplywasstopped,dryArgaswassuppliedatthesametemperaturetoremovephysicallyadsorbedwateronthesamplefor20min,andtheseconddehydrationoperationwascarriedoutbyheatingupthesampleto280󰀂C.Thereactedfraction,x(molarfractionofMg(OH)2inthesumofMg(OH)2andMgO)wascalculatedfromtheinitialweightofsampleanditsweightchange.8Dehydrationbehaviorofmetal-salt-addedmagnesiumhy-droxidesbetween200and400󰀂CareshowninFigure1.Dehy-020406080100
