Events & Activities

1.What activity do you enjoy doing most with your family??--- 2009.1.10;

I enjoy doing a lot of things with my family but the most pleasant activity we d like to do together is to go to hot spring hotel in Beijing. First, making bath in hot spring is very healthy, actually its very good for the seniors. Since my father’ knees pain often, he really enjoys relief from hurt. Second, there are good amenities like spa, fitness center, fancy restaurant, swimming pool, cyber bar, tea room. We can find out all we need. Every year I m very looking forward to spending a fabulous holidays there.

I like to go to picnic with my family the most. Our family really love nature and every spring we will go to Yuyuan park to see the gorgeous cherry blooming festival. The scenery is so splendid that it looks like unreal. Studying flowers is my mother’s pass-time. she would take hundreds of pictures of them while my father and I would play badminton or ride a boat. It’s comfortable and relaxing to have a picnic under the blooming trees admiring the flowers, chatting, stretching out on the grass and taking a nap.

2.Many students do volunteer work. What kind of volunteer do you want to

be? --- 2009.1.17 NA

I m a dog person, so if I did a volunteer work, I would choose to take care the homeless pets. As I have a dog myself, I know dogs’ habits and characters. When they act in a weird way, I would figure out the problems and be able to tell whether they are sick or hungry or just feel lonely. Second, I would feel happy, real happy to help these poor animals. I d love to feed them, clean them, give them body check. Their cute, innocent and grateful eyes make me pleased and touched from the bottom of my heart.

I prefer to join some animal organization to help the homeless dogs and cats for some reasons bellows: first I m a dog person. Loving animal is my nature and I have a puppy at home, so I have some necessary knowledge how to take care a pet. Second, I would like to help the organization to make some brochures or posters about protecting the homeless animals. I want to pass on the information and let more people involved in the service.

I would like to be a volunteer for community service.

3.Indoor activities and outdoor activities in your vacation. 2009.2.22 Outdoor activities sound more interesting for me. For one reason, I m an athletic person, doing sports is my favorite pass-time, such as badminton, swimming, jogging, climbing, hiking. So once I ve some spare time, I would definitely choose to go outside and do some sports. For another reason, outdoor activities is a good way of closing the nature. After a long time of stressful work at office, we really need some fresh air and stretch ourselves a little bit.

Of cause outdoor activities. For a urban habitant, cement and steel skyscrapers make me sick. No wonder how eager I m to go outdoor, to get some fresh air and to see some green scenery. During the vacation, all I need is to experience another life. On another hand, in outside, we have more choices to relax, like travelling, hiking, rock climbing, sunshine bath. Actually exposing in the sun will help body to produce some vitamin in need.

4.Some students prefer to do part-time jobs in the evening while others

prefer do part-time jobs during the day. Which do you prefer? Explain why.

--- 2009.3.29

Well, it depends. Someone is night owl, someone is early bird. For me, I would like to chose a job in the day. First, in the daytime, I feel more passionate and energetic. I m willing to do the work and more efficient. In the evening, I prefer to have some private time to do something personal or something alone, like reading, writing, listening music, watching a movie, dining with my friends. Second, working too late at night will harm my next day work. As I m still a student, my focus actually is on the study. Well, part-time job would be a good way of getting some experience, but I prefer to save the energy for next day’s class.

Personally, I would choose daytime job, because, most of my friends work in the day and they are off at night. I don’t want a different schedule which doesn’t match with others. Working in the evening will definitely reduce the time with my friends. Every time they ask me out, it would be embarrassing to not go. Second, working in the evening wouldn’t be very safe sometimes. If I worked at night, my parents will absolutely worry about me. Seriously, I don’t want to make them worried.

5.Describe one thing that you’ve always wanted to do but haven’t done yet.

--- 2009.5.15 NA

Well, it’s a little bit embarrassing. I m a junk food addict. I love sweets, chocolate, ice cream, fried chips, cheese cake, donut…Charlie’s chocolate factory is my dream. How many times I just want to pig out and eat up all

those yummy junk things, however, I can’t. Because they are junk food. They contain too much salt, sugar, high calories, protein, other chemicals which are harmful for the health, some may cause cancers. What’s more, I m a dance student. One of my daily homework is to control weight. If I wanted to be a pro dancer, I should be forbidden to touch any junk food.

I always want to learn dance, Tango, I mean. Once I watched a Spanish musical in theater, I was impressed and since then, I ve been wishing to learn it. But for several reasons I haven’t done it yet: first, it’s hard to found a real dance school. Once I went to a dance school, but the very next day, it was shut down. I was very upset. Second, after class, it’s not easy to get a partner to practice. I would be too shy to ask some classmate to be my partner and as they are working people. They don’t actually have time to practice with me. 6.Talk about an activity you enjoyed doing with your family when you were a

child. Describe the activity and explain why it was enjoyable to do this activity with your family. --- 2009.5.30 NA 同上

7.What new activity you like to do recently? 2009.6.20 同上

8.What big event happened in your country recently? 2009.6.27

Chinese writer Mo Yan won the Nobel Prize for his contribution in Chinese literature.

9.Talk about an activity you will do in the near future. 2009.8.1 同上

10.Describe a historical event that you are interested in. 2009.8.7

I would say Titanic. A luxurious cruise hit a iceberg and sank. That tragedy caused about 2000 deaths.

11.Which way do you prefer to spend your spare time, reading, thinking alone

or participating in group activities? Why? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer. 2009.8.22

Group activities sound a better choice for me for the reasons bellow: first, living in the city makes it hard meet friends frequently. Organizing a group activity could definitely create an opportunity for friend reunion. We can do sports, go to karaoke, and do spa or facial which are not only good for health but also enhance our friendship. Second, companion brings more fun. Human is actually social animal. Communication is a gift endowed by nature. No matter what kind of activity you do, you would be glad to have someone to share your joy and your trouble. As we say, shared joy double, shared pains reduce.

Group activities would be my first choice. For one thing, group activities would teach me a teamwork spirit. As a young student, I d love to learn more about social life and networking skill. I think working or playing in group would bring me some new experience. For another, people can inspire you. As we say ‘two heads better than one’. More people are more likely to think up a great idea or solution, like brainstorm.

12.Describe the most important day of your life. Explain why it was important

to you. Include reasons and examples to support your response. 2009.9.25 NA

The most important day in my life was the day that I received the offer of my university. My parents were really proud of me and they called my grandparents and our relatives to share this good news. The whole family was happy for me and we had a dinner in a fancy restaurant to celebrate it. Since I ve been accepted by the university, I was invited to give a speech in my high school. I thanked my teachers and support from the family and shared the my study experience and school life stories. All my classmates and teachers applauded for me. That was an unforgettable day.

I would never forget the day I succeed to swim by myself because I think I ve accomplished a great job. I couldn’t swim until I went to college. The swim class was mandatory and I had to pass it. Before, I was afraid of water, swimming was no doubt my nightmare. So I had to conquer my fear. Then, practice was not a peanut. After each class, I forced myself to stay in the pool for a couple of hours to exercise. Upon I returned to my dorm, the whole body suffered from sharp sour pains. Finally, I made it. No wonder how thrilled I was and how great successful I felt for doing it.

13.Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Watching TV is

not good for people’s daily life. Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer. 2009.9.25 NA

It’s untrue to think watching tv is disadvantageous for people’s daily life. First of all, watching tv is a great way of receiving information from all over the world. From commercials to president speech, tv does a decent job to spread all kinds of information to people in a wide rang. Second, watching tv is a good way of leisure such as tv series, movies, musical videos, talk shows, talent shows, test shows. Various programs flourish our life and provide us a relaxing environment.

Tv is a multifunction tool serving us. I think watching tv is helpful. In terms of entertainment, tv could offer various programs such as talent shows like the Voice, documentary like national geography, talk shows and tv series. After a stressful day, people want to watch some fun programs to relax. In terms of

education, actually, many specific programs are broadcast in tv. If you are interested in cooking and bakery, you would find a channel host by a French cook teaching cooking. If you like history, you would find historic program telling from ancient Egypt to post war china. Besides teaching skills, watching tv could help people enlarge their horizon too.

14.If a foreign tourist wants to visit your country, what should he or she pay

attention to? 2009.10.17

In my view, greeting style is the first thing should be noticed. In China, unlike western people, people don’t hug a lot and express respect in a humble way. For the first meeting they usually shake hands. Second, people’s title is another thing to mention. When Chinese people address to others, they don’t call them just by their name but by their job titles. In western, people call others’ first name directly, conversely in china it would be impolite.

15.Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? All children

should learn to draw or paint. 2009.10.10 NA

I don’t agree to force children to do something they don’t want to do voluntarily. Nature endows everyone different talent. Someone may be sensitive to color, shape, lines; someone could be more interested in melody, notes, keys and someone is very good at motion, run, jump. That’s why we have different careers. Second, forcing kids to learn things against their willing may hurt their real interest. What’ more not only hate they drawing or painting, but also learning itself.

16.Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? If a person wants

to be happy, he or she should like his or her job or work. Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer. 2009.10.23

I do think a person should like his career if he wants real happiness. Career is like a travel. What we need is not just a right destination but an enjoyable trip. During this trip, are the companions nice people? Does the leader support us a lot? Have we done the best? Those factors are all counted to judge happiness. For a job, money is not the only thing count for being happy but also self satisfaction.

20.w hat big event happened in your country recently? 2009.6.27

21.Describe a time when you are asked to do something you don’t want to do,

and what happened as a result? 2009.7.25 NA

That was the most regrettable moment in my life. It happened in my college. My classmates and I were demanded to do a presentation. I was in charge of conclusion part. Well, at first though, I assumed that part was a easy work and it wouldn’t take me much time to prepare, even I didn’t need to prepare it at all. Then when my classmates asked me how about my conclusion, I just didn’t say the truth instead telling them I was ready. When that day came, I stood on the stage, I was scared. The biggest fear in my life walked to me and I failed to say a word but hello. My classmates were very disappointed and we didn’t have a good score that time because of my stupid arrogancy.

22.Describe a special event or occasion that you have participate with your

family or friends.

23.Do you like travel to somewhere you have never been to or the place you

have ever been. 2009.7.25

Well, not really. Actually I prefer to go somewhere I m already familiar with. Here’s the reasons: I m not risk taker. Going to some places I ve ever been made me feel secure and comfortable. I needn’t worry about where I could have a decent meal, where I could go shopping and where the nearest clinic is in case of emergency. Moreover, the advantages of a place will take time to discover. I don’t want to be a sightseeing visitor when I go to a certain place I really like. A great resort like a very old wine, need to taste slowly, gently and gracefully. So I would definitely choose an old place and travel again.

24.Describe your first-year school life. 2009.8.2

25.A most unforgettable success in your life.

period of time. Give specific reasons to support your answer.

29.Do you prefer to write a long essay or give a speech in frond of class for a

assignment?---2011.5.14

I would like to give a speech in class. First I m good at vertical skills, by giving

a speech I may express myself better than doing a paper. Word has more power than paper does. Besides the content, professor may also take my performance in count. That may help me to have a score for this class. Second, it would be an opportunity to communicate with classmates and let them know me better. After giving my points, others may want to add their own opinions then we could discuss it and learn more from each other. It’s an ideal learning approach that I d like to use in my study. That’s another advantage which a paper couldn’t bring.

所谓真实性,其一,它的语速与本族语说话人(English native speaker)的语速相仿;其二,听力材料中很自然地含有fillers:sort of, uh, um, so, well, etc.;和口语体:we’re gonna talk about ...; An’ I’m gonna get into…;以及说话人下意识的、或是为了强调而有意识的“重复(repetition)”;等等。 SAMPLE QUESTIONS:

Include details and examples in your explanation. sample answer: 091031NA Speaking Question 2 Some people prefer to live in a place most of their life. Other people prefer to move to different places. Which do you prefer and why? Use specific reasons and examples to support your response. sample answer: I prefer to move around a lot instead of settling in one place because first of all I believe most people’s growth comes with the changes in their lives. For example, after finishing my junior high school in China, I decided to go to Canada. This gives me an opportunity to be instructed in an entirely different manner. I’ve become a more independent thinker and learned how to look at things from different perspectives. If I were still studying in China, I quite doubt I would learn all this. Secondly, I think that by moving around, people are able to experience diverse circumstances which give them new experiences and broaden their views, and thus they can get more comprehensive understanding of the world, the society and life itself. What charactereristics do you think a good teacher should have?(06. 3.3; 07. 11.3考题)

Sample answer: In my view, a good teacher should have different characteristics. First, a good teacher should be faithful and dedicated to the job. If a teacher is faithful to the job, then s/he never cheats and will be impartial(偏向)and students will respect such a teacher. If a teacher is dedicated towards his/her work, then s/he will teach with his/her heart. Another most important characteristic of a good teacher is patience. Teachers should never lose their patience in class when students ask questions repeatedly. A teacher should explain each and every aspect of the topic in the easiest way. Most of all, a good teacher should update his/her knowledge ‘cause further learning can make a good teacher re-discover the beauty of the teaching profession. 2. What are important characteristics you look for in friends?(06. 5.12; 06. 6.24; 07.1.27考题) Sample answer: I think what makes a good friend is someone who is honest, supportive, and has a good sense of humor. I just look for someone who's honest to me no matter what. He should not tell stories behind my back; he should tell me my short-comings at my mouth, but never praises me in front of me. It is a well known saying that "A FRIEND IN NEED IS A FRIEND INDEED." Therefore, a friend should stand by you in the hour of any sort of need. I just think that a good friend won't leave me if I'm in trouble. They can be my friends in sunshine and in shade, care for me even when the times are bad and even more when the times are great. Also, I'd love to spend more time with someone who can make me laugh and is fun to be around. 3. Describe a person that influenced you most.(06. 5.26; 06. 3. 17;06.10.22考题;与06.5.26类似) Sample answer: The person that really influenced me most was Ms. Xing---my college teacher who taught us English literature. Her class was quite different from the other teachers. In her class we were not expected to sit there and listen. We had to get more involved in the class activities, like discussions, comments or debates sometimes. Our creativity and imagination were developed enormously through the active participation. On the other hand, she let us think more about life by sharing her experiences and more importantly, she taught me how to live on my own. So that's why I was greatly influenced. Not only did she give me knowledge, but also she gave me courage and confidence as well.

T1: which of the following three behaviors would you consider the most negative for kids? Being selfish, saying impolite things or speaking loudly in the public? I would say that speaking loudly might have the most negative impact on kids, as it could be pretty annoying and disturbing to others, and without being aware of this, the kids might have the bad habit of ignoring others’feeling in the long term. Imagine that you are watching a movie in a cinema or listening to a concert in a hall, a naughty boy is talking loudly over the phone or chatting with his friends all the way without caring about others, it could be a real nightmare. And this has happened a lot to me, for example last time when I went to see The Dallas Buyers Club, a bunch of kids were talking so loudly from the very beginning of the movie that I could barely catch a word from Ron Woodroof, and all the other viewers got so annoyed and disappointed for that. T2: Do you agree or disagree that to succeed we need to make enemies? Well I disagree with the opinion, coz it’s true that most of the time we do face a lot of competitors and rivals in order to succeed, but it doesn’t mean that we have to make enemies. Let’s take a look at LA Lakers, when Kobe Bryant joined Lakers as a Shooting Guard in 1996, he was facing a lot of equally strong competitors like Allen Iverson and Ray Allen, but at that time Shaquille O’Neal was already the second-to-none Center in the whole association.

Task2. About education 1.Some students prefer to have classes in the morning and do their part-time jobs in the evening. Others prefer to have classes in the evening and do their part-time job in the morning. Which do you prefer and why ?Use specific reasons and examples to support your response . As far as I am concerned, I prefer to have classes in the morning and do my part-time job in the evening. First of all, as a student, attending courses is of the first importance. Thus I should give priority to class rather than part-time job. If I do my part-time job in the morning, I will probably feel exhausted in the evening and pay no attention to my teacher in classes. I mean, studying in the morning is much more efficient than in the evening. So, I will choose to attend classes in the daytime. 2.Some students prefer to review their notes regularly; while others prefer to review their notes just before the test. Which do you prefer and explain why? As far as I am concerned, I prefer to review my notes regularly rather than just before the test. First of all, if the test is around the corner, having reviewed my notes regularly will not only diminish the time I spend on preparation for the test, but also probably get me a higher grade than those who review their notes just before the test. In addition, getting a good score is not the primary purpose of learning. Studying is for increasing one’s knowledge. And only through reviewing the note regularly, will a student achieve steady progress in study. 3.Some university students would prefer to study full-time; others would prefer to study part-time. Which do you prefer and why? As far as I am concerned, I prefer to study part-time rather than full-time. First of all, studying full-time is too stressful for me. Studying part-time will provide me with more time to review the lesson, and thus I will have a deep understanding of the knowledge. And, studying part-time can also provide me enough time to put my knowledge into practice. For example, my major is marketing, which is subject of the character of practice. And it is important for me to get a relevant job in the spare time. So, I prefer to study part time. 4.Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Students should always study in quiet places .Use specific reasons and examples to support your position. As far as I am concerned, students do not always need to study in quiet places. First of all, although it's common sense that quiet place is ideal for students, sometimes noise can not be avoided. For instance, there may be some people getting in and out of the study room in order to answer the phone or go to the toilet. Therefore it is very essential for students to bear some noises. And also, it is not the environment, but the mind that plays important role in learning efficiency. Mao Zedong, one of the greatest leaders of our country in history, used to read in the Tiananmen Square intently. And Mao was so concentrated on his book that he didn’t affect by the noisy environment.
