10.【题文】As a young man, Al was a skilled artist, a potter with a wife and two fine sons. One night, his older son developed a severe stomachache. Thinking it was only some common intestinal(肠的)disorder, neither Al nor his wife took the condition very seriously. But the boy died suddenly that night.

Knowing the death could have been avoided if he had only realized the seriousness of the situation, he always felt he was guilty. To make matters worse, his wife left him a short time later, leaving him alone with his six-year-old younger son. The hurt and pain of the two situations were more than Al could stand, and he turned to alcohol for help. In time Al became an alcoholic.

As the alcoholism progressed, Al began to lose everything he possessed -- his land, house, etc. Finally Al died alone in a small bar. Hearing of Al's death, I thought, “What a totally wasted life! What a complete failure!”

As time went by, I began to revalue my earlier rough judgment. I knew Al’s now adult son, Ernie. He is one of the kindest, most caring, most loving men I have ever known. I saw the love between Ernie and his children, thinking that kindness and caring had to come from somewhere.

I hadn't heard Ernie talked much about his father. One day, I worked up my courage to ask him what on earth his father had done so that he became such a special person. Ernie said quietly,

“As a child until I left home at 18, Al came into my room every night, gave me a kiss and said, “love you, son.”

Tears came to my eyes as I realized what I had been a fool to judge Al as a failure. He had not left any material possessions behind. But he had been a kind loving father, and left behind his best love.

1. Why did Al turn to alcohol for help?

A. He felt guilty for his older son’ death.

B. His wife left him a short time later.

C. He lost everything he possessed.

D. He couldn’t stand what he suffered.

2. What can we learn from the passage?

A. Al’s older son died of a deadly disease.

B. Ernie’s performance left a deep impression on the author.

C. Al became an alcoholic, thus ignoring his son.

D. Ernie hated his father because of his brother’s death.

3. Ernie became so special a person mainly because________.

A. his father showed love to him

B. his father left him no possessions

C. his father is an alcoholic

D. his father divorced his mother

4. What does the author think of Al?

A. He was a total failure.

B. He was a skilled artist.

C. He was a kind loving father.

D. He was a born alcoholic.

11.【题文】Do you want to get more sleep? Do you wish you had extra time in your day? Interested in generally enjoying the world around you? Then turn off your smartphone for a day. That’s what I did this week, and let me tell you, giving up your security blanket - I mean iPhone - is free.

At 7:15 a.m. my alarm went off. Usually this would be my signal to grab my phone and start my morning Internet routine: Check work email. Reply to urgent work emails. Check personal email. Reply to urgent personal emails. Read morning news digests (摘要) sent to my inbox. Check Facebook. Check email one more time. Force myself to get out of bed. Sound familiar? Instead, it went something like this: Get out of bed. Take a shower. Get dressed. Make coffee. Open laptop. Read email, social media, and news while leisurely enjoying my coffee. Head to the office. Get there 20 minutes earlier, since I got out of bed 20 minutes earlier. Thanks to giving up my phone, my morning way felt longer and more relaxed.

But let's get back to that journey to work. My phone usually plays a big part in it. I call my mom on my 15-minute walk to the subway or listen to the phone player or music. This day I was faced with a single walk, free of distractions (分心). And I liked it! I let my mind wander. I noticed the architectural details on the homes I passed. I discovered that on a clear day, you can see the very tip of the Golden Gate Bridge peaking out above the homes on my hilly street. My basic reaction: quick, where's my phone so I can take a picture for install gram? But instead, I had to enjoy it all by myself. The walk through my San Francisco neighborhood felt like my little secret.

Once on the subway train, the five-stop journey seemed surprisingly faster, since I wasn't frustrated with a phone player.

The workday was pretty uneventful without a phone. I'm stuck to my computer anyway and hurried over to the restaurant across the street for a late lunch. It didn't give me much time to wait for my food without anything to distract me. Getting through the day without phone wasn't as hard as I expected.

1. According to the passage the author thought that __________ .

A. it was quicker for people to get up without phones

B. switching off your phone might help you sleep more

D. the five-stop journey must be faster with the phones off

2. The underlined sentence in the last paragraph probably means ________. .

A. you can work effectively without a phone

B. you can’t work without a phone

C. the workday was peaceful without a phone

D. the workday can’t be finished on time

3. The fourth paragraph is used to show_________.

A. you can enjoy the benefit of the phone

B. you can get another new experience without a phone

C. you can have all kinds of views by using phone all the way

D. you can’t take a picture without a phone

4. What’s the author’s suggestion for the readers?

A. Keep off the computer and the phone.

B. Force yourselves to turn off the phone when you sleep.

C. Listen to the music with your phone when you read news.

D. Try switching off the phone for a day.

12.【题文】The education system in Finland is about to go through a brand new and fundamental change, despite enjoying the distinction of being one of the best in the world. The education department has decided not to use the long-used old method of “teaching by subject.” Instead, the country will now involve the children in helping them learn and question by gradually developing to “teaching by topic”, shared Lisa Pohjolainen, who is in charge of youth and adult education in Helsinki – the capital city at the forefront of the reform program, "This is going to be a big change in education in Finland that we're just beginning."

“The education system, though appearing to be new, is quite logical,” explained Pasi Silander, the city’s development manager, “What we need now is a different kind of education to prepare people for working life. Young people use quite advanced computers. In the past the banks had lots of bank clerks adding up figures but now that has totally changed. We therefore have to make the changes in education that are necessary for industry and modern society.”

How does Finland plan to implement the method of teaching by topic? Evidently overall training and accumulative skill development take up procedure over “lessons.” Those in their late teens are already being engaged in what Finland refers to as “phenomenon teaching” – or teaching by topic. For exampl e, “cafeteria services” lessons will include elements of finance, languages (to help serve foreign customers), writing skills and communication skills.

Students will slowly be taught cross-subject topics which would have varying elements of multiple “subjects.” These elements will vary according to the “topic” or “skill” the student is learning. Apart from the same, students will move away from the traditional sitting and evaluation techniques as well.

Students will sit in smaller groups and work collectively (共同地) to solve problems, all the while improving upon their communication skills. They won't be made to sit in rows and asked questions individually to assess their progress. Instead, a group whose joint efforts bring out results faster will be promoted.

The education system needs a thorough examination, owing to the fact that traditional teaching techniques were based on primitive tools that were quite limited in availability and accessibility. With modern world being wid ely connected, isn’t it time the students learned how to step ahead of mere fact-based learning, which promotes memory expansion rather than mental development?

1. What is the main idea of the passage?

A. Students in Finland won’t have to study traditional subjects any longer.

B. The classrooms in Finland will resemble conferences where topics are discussed.

C. The education system in Finland will experience a great change.

D. The present system in Finland has proved to be a success.

2. The underlined word implement can best be replaced by_________.

A. carry out

B. work out

C. make out

D. figure out

3. According to the passage, we can see that _________.

A. those in their early teens are already being engaged in teaching by topic

B. the students will sit in small groups and work individually to solve problems

C. the students will at once be taught cross-subject topics

D. teaching by topic will be a big improvement in education in Finland

4. What can we infer from the passage?

A. Teaching evaluation techniques is one of the best in the world.

B. Teaching by topic will be practical and effective for people in their working life.

C. Teaching by topic can improve communication skills.

D. Traditional teaching techniques were quite limited in availability and accessibility.

Those in their late teens…可以看出A错。根据第五自然段第一句

话中and work collectively to solve problems 是“collectively”而不是“individually”可以看出B错。根据第四自然段第一句话可以看出是slowly而不是at once所以C错。第二自然段中What we need now is a different of….working life,以及We therefore have to make the changes in education that are necessary for industry and modern society."第五自然段all the while improving upon their communication skills等都是在讲新教育体制的好处。

因此D正确。

4. B. 分别在第一自然段…despite enjoying the distinction of being one of the best in the

world.第二自然段…all the while improving upon their communication skills最后一自然段中…traditional teaching techniques were based on primitive tools that were quite limited in availability and accessibility.可以看出A,C,D都是事实题。B是根据第二段what we need now is a different kind of education to prepare people for working life 推断出来的。

13.【题文】Everyone knows how the work week can have an effect on employees, but new research suggests the five-day hard work may have even broader impacts on climate. After

examining more than 40 years of temperature data taken from roughly 10,000 surface stations, researchers found that temperature differences between day and night appear to follow distinct five-days-on, two-days-off patterns.

The scientists checked the data for all possible natural influences such as the moon’s cycle as well as random variations and found neither to be at play. The only factor that could be causing the fluctuations was the Monday-through-Friday tiring work, they concluded in a recently published report. “There is nothing in nature that should cause these data to be different,” said Piers M de F. Forster, a meteorologist (气象学家) who co-authored the study with NOAA’s Susan Solomon. The meteorologists propose the differences in average temperatures between Saturdays as opposed to Thursdays, for example, may stem from workweek pollution. Forster explains that during the workweek more people travel regularly and more factories are in operation. Both contribute to the amount of particle (颗粒) pollution in the air. Particles can influence cloud cover, but the kind of particles released into the atmosphere can lead to different changes, says Forster. Lighter particles provide a surface for small drops of cloud to form. This leads to an increase in cloud cover, which, in turn, can lead to an increase in temperature since clouds can prevent heat from passing through. The world’s oceans are slowly getting more acidic, say scientists. The researchers from California say the change is taking place in response to higher levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. The lowering of the waters’pH value is not great at the moment but could cause a serious threat to current marine life if it continues, they warn. Ken Caldeira, from the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, report his concern in the journal Nature. Increasing use of fossil fuels means more carbon dioxide is going into the air, and most of it will eventually be absorbed by seawater. Once in the water, it reacts to form carbolic acid. It is not absolutely clear what that means for marine life, however. In recent years some people have suggested deliberately storing carbon dioxide in the deep ocean as a way of controlling global warming. But Dr Caldeira said that such a strategy should now be re-considered. Previously, most experts had looked at ocean absorption of carbon dioxide as a good thing - because in releasing CO2 into the atmosphere we warm the planet and when CO2 is absorbed by the ocean, it reduces the amount of greenhouse warming.

1. What is the cause of distinct temperature differences between day and night on weekdays?

A. People’s hard work.

B. Serious impacts.

C. The lunar cycle.

D. Random variations.

2. Why are temperature differences between day and night distinct on workdays?

A. Particles influence cloud cover.

B. Clouds have an effect of keeping warm.

C. There is more amount of particle pollution in the air.

D. Oceans are getting more acidic.

3. The underlined word“fluctuation”in Paragraph 2 means________ .

A. phenomenon

B. sudden change

C. serious pollution

D. consequence

4. What’s Ken Caldeira’s opinion about storing carbon dioxide in the deep ocean?

A. It will reduce the water’s PH value.

B. It will be harmful to marine life.

C. Ocean absorption of carbon dioxide is a good thing.

D. We should take it more seriously.

【答案】ACBD

【解析】1. A.根据第二段中“The only factor that could be causing the fluctuations was the Monday-through-Friday grind…”

2. C. 根据第三段中“…Both contribute to the amount of particle pollution in the air.”

3. B.“fluctuation”意思是“在某方面的突然变化”

4. D. 根据第四段中“But Dr Caldeira said that such a strategy should now be re-considered”

14.【题文】A better method for predicting the number of hurricanes in an upcoming season has been developed by a team of University of Arizona atmospheric scientists. The UA team’s new model improves the accuracy of seasonal hurricane forecasts for the North Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico by 23 percent. The team’s research paper was published online in the journal Weather and Forecasting on March 25.

“Our model is better at predicting the number of seasonal hurricanes in the Atlantic than the other existing models,” said first author Kyle Davis, a master’s student in the UA atmospheric sciences department. “On average, our model has 23 percent less error for predicting hurricanes occurring since 2001.”

Hurricanes are storms with maximum wind speeds in over 73 mph and are among the most damaging natural disasters in the U.S. The Atlantic hurricane season lasts from June 1 to Nov. 30. The UA model can provide its forecast by the start of hurricane season, which allows people to prepare better for the upcoming season, Davis said. “Tens of millions of people are threatened by Atlantic hurricanes. It affects their properties and it affects their lives.”

The team developed the new model by using data from the 1950 to 2013 hurricane seasons. They tested the new model by seeing if it could “hindcast”(追算) the number of hurricanes that occurred each season from 1900 to 1949.

It performed really well in the period from 1900 to 1949, Davis said. “That’s the most convincing test of our model.”

Other investigators have estimated that damages from U.S. hurricanes from 1970 to 2002 cost $57 billion in 2015 dollars -- more than earthquakes and human-caused disasters combined for the time period.

“Better seasonal predictions can help cities and governments in emergency management planning,” said co-author Xubin Zeng, who holds the Agnese N. Haury Chair in Environment and is a UA professor of atmospheric sciences.

The paper, “A new statistical model to predict seasonal North Atlantic hurricane activity,”by Davis, Zeng and Elizabeth A. Ritchie, a UA atmospheric sciences professor, is scheduled for print publication in a future issue of the journal of Weather and Forecasting. Science Foundation Arizona, the National Science Foundation and NASA funded the research.
