21.(6分)Mirroring China’s Past: Emperors and Their Bronzes

Chinese bronzes (青铜) of the second and first millennia BC are some of the most distinctive achievements in the history of art. These vessels (容器) were made to carry sacrificial offerings, to use in burial or to honor noble families in public ceremonies. When they were found by emperors centuries later, these spiritually significant objects were seen as signs of heavenly messages about a ruler or a dynasty and became prized items in royal collections. This exhibition—the first to explore these ancient objects throughout Chinese history—presents a rare opportunity to experience a large number of these works together in the United States.

Unlike Greek and Roman bronze sculptures of human and animal forms, most objects from Bronze Age China (about 2000 - 221 BC) were vessels for ceremonial use. Beginning with the Song dynasty (960 - 1279), emperors unearthed these symbolic works and began collecting them, considering them to be evidence of their own authority as rulers. In addition to impressive collections, the royal fascination with bronzes led to the creation of numerous reproductions and the comprehensive cataloguing of palace holdings. These catalogues are works of art themselves, featuring beautiful drawings and detailed descriptions of each object.

From the 12th century onward, scholars and artists also engaged in collecting and understanding ancient bronzes. Unlike emperors, scholars regarded bronzes as material evidence of their efforts to recover and reconstruct the past, and they occasionally exchanged them as tokens (象征) of friendship. Today ancient bronzes still occupy a primary position in Chinese culture — as historical objects and as signifiers of an important cultural heritage that inspires new generations, as seen in the works of contemporary artists on view in this presentation.

Mirroring China’s Past brings together approximately 180 works from the An Institute of Chicago’s strong holdings and from the Palace Museum in Beijing, the Shanghai Museum, and important museums and private collections in the United States. By providing viewers with a new understanding of ancient bronzes and their significance through time, the exhibition demonstrates China’s fascinating history and its develop ing present.

1、In what way are Chinese bronzes different from Greek and Roman ones?

A.They fascinated the royal family.

B.They took animal or human forms.

C.They served ceremonial purposes.

D.They were important cultural heritage.

2、What does the author think of catalogues of bronzes?

A.Unreal. B.Creative.

C.Artistic. D.Necessary.

3、What can we infer about the exhibition according to the text?

A.It is held in China. B.It is arranged by time.

C.It is organized by scholars. D.It includes modern artworks.

4、What does the underlined word “holdings” in the last paragraph refer to?

A.Viewers. B.Collections.

C.Museums. D.Art dealers.

22.(8分)In A History of Reading, the Canadian novelist Alberto Manguel describes a remarkable transformation of human consciousness, which took place around the 10th century A.D.: the arrival of silent reading. Human beings have been reading for thousands of years, but in ancient times, the normal thing was to read aloud. With the arrival of silent reading, Manguel writes, …the reader was at last able to establish an unrestricted relationship with the book and the words. The words no longer needed to occupy the time required to pronounce them. The reader’s thoughts inspected them at leisure, drawing new ideas from them, allowing comparisons from memory or from other books.

①To read silently is to free your mind to reflect, to remember, to question and compare. The cognitive scientist Maryanne Wolf calls this freedom “the secret gift of time to think”. A thousand years later, critics fear that digital technology has put this gift in danger. The Internet’s flood of information, together with the distractions of social media, threatens to overwhelm the space of reading, leaving us in what the journalist Nicholas Carr has called “the shallows”. In Carr’s view, the “endless, tempting buzz” of the Internet endangers our very being: “One of the greatest dangers we face,” he writes, “as we give up control over the flow of our thoughts and memories to a powerful electronic syste m, is a slow damage to our humanness and our humanity.”

②There’s no question that digital technology presents challenges to the reading brain. But seen from a historical perspective, digital reading and silent reading look like differences of degree, rather than of kind. To the extent that digital reading represents something new, its potential cuts both ways. Done badly, the Internet reduces us to mindless clickers, racing numbly to the bottom of a bottomless feed; but done well, it has the potential to expand the very contemplative (沉思的) space that we have prized in ourselves ever since we learned to read without moving our lips.

③In the fifth century B.C., Socrates worried that writing would weaken human memory, and stifle(扼杀) judgment. In fact, as Wolf notes in her 2007 book Proust and the Squid: the Story and Science of the Reading Brain, the opposite happened: Faced with the written page, the reader’s brain develops new capacities.

④The Internet may cause our minds to wander off, and yet a quick look at the history of books suggests that we have been wandering off all along. When we read, the eye does not progress steadily along the line of text; it alternates between saccades —little jumps—and brief stops, not unlike the movement of the mouse’s cursor a cross a screen of hypertext.

It’s true that studies have found that readers given text on a screen do worse on recall and comprehension tests

than readers given the same text on paper. But a 2015 study by the German educator Johannes Naumann suggests the opposite. He gave a group of high-school students the job of tracking down certain pieces of information on websites; he found that the students who regularly did research online were better at this task than students who used the Internet mostly to send email, chat, and blog.

A new generation of digital writers prefers to include interactive features. The 2014 iPad novel, Pry, tells the story of a demolition(爆破) expert returning home from the first Gulf War. The story is told in text, photographs, video clips, and audio. It uses an interface(界面) that allows you to follow the action and shift between levels of awareness. As you read text on the screen, describing characters and plot, you draw your fingers apart and see a photograph of the chief character, his eyes opening on the world. Pinch your finger shut and you visit his troubled unconscious; words and images race by, as if you are inside his memory. Pry is the opposite of a shallow work; its whole play is between the surface and the depths of the human mind. Reading it is stimulating.

1、In Alberto Manguel’s opinion, silent reading ________.

A.is an abnormal thing to human consciousness

B.offers readers’ mind freedom and time to think

C.strengthens readers’ power of memory and reflection

D.allows readers to gain an insight into books and words

2、Why is digital technology considered to have endangered our being?

A.It presents challenges to the reading brain.

B.It harms our humanness and humanity gradually.

C.It is very likely to expand our contemplative space.

D.It leaves our thoughts and memories out of control.

3、The sentence “The fear of technology is not new.” should be placed in ________.

A.①B.②C.③D.④

4、What can we infer from Johannes Naumann’s study?

A.It’s easier to collect information on the Intern et than in books.

B.People’s habit of using the Internet influences their performance.

C.The Internet isn’t supposed to be used as a tool of entertainment.

D.Paper reading is better than screen reading in improving comprehension.

5、The 2014 iPad novel, Pry, is mentioned in the last paragraph to ______.

A.introduce the occurrence of a reading revolution

B.show the technology employed in digital reading

C.prove digital reading not shallow but attractive

D.illustrate the impact digital reading has on our life.

6、What is probably the best title for the passage?

A.The deep space of digital reading

23.(8分)What do you do if your nation has a severe water shortage and happens to be located in a desert? If you have the resources, you turn to technology, which is what a company in the oil-rich United Arab Emirates (阿联酋) (UAE for short) is planning to do. The country, which gets less than four inches of rain per year, could solve its issue with water shortage by dragging icebergs from Antarctica to its shores. The first such attempt will begin in 2018.

Once the iceberg is at UAE shores, the ice above the waterline would be cut off and crushed into drinking water, which would then be stored in large water tanks. The iceberg would also have a broader impact, says Abdullah Mohammad Sulaiman Al Shehi:

“Cold air out from an iceberg close to the shore of the Arabian Sea would cause rainstorms across the Ara bian Gulf and the southern region of the Arabian Peninsula all year round. As the rising air expands, cools and condenses (冷凝) due to the decrease in air pressure, water vapor (水蒸气) is collected in the clouds, which becomes heavy and falls as rain.” More i cebergs will bring more water vapor and clouds, creating a profound (巨大的)effect on the regional climate over a decade, turning the desert into “green meadows(草地)”. The melting iceberg would also add fresh water to the Arabian sea, returning biodiversity. There would also be a boost(兴旺) for tourism from all the people interested in looking at the icebergs. The Emirates Iceberg Project comes from a group of efforts by NABL called “Filling the Empty Quarter”. The project aims to dramatically influence the deserts of the “Empty Quarter”, the planet’s largest sand desert. The region is also the richest oil-producing area in the world, including parts of Saudi Arabia, Oman, UAE and Yemen.

1、What is the UAE planning to do according to the text?

A.To collect fresh sea water from Antarctica.

B.To drag icebergs from Antarctica to the country.

C.To make icebergs from Antarctica melt.

D.To get 20 billion gallons of fresh water from icebergs.

2、What Al Shehi said reflects the effect of icebergs on_______.

A.the weather B.the industry

C.the biodiversity D.the tourism

3、According to the text, the deserts of the “Empty Quarter” are______.

A.turning into green meadows

B.the resource of salt in the Arabian sea

C.the empty area without population

D.abundant in oil as a matter of fact

4、According to the text, icebergs to be dragged to UAE’ shores will _________.

A.bring water vapor and sand

B.add salt water to the Arabian sea

C.become “green meadows”

D.attract people interested in looking at the icebergs

24.(8分) A company in San Francisco, California, has found a way to turn used plastic bottles into women’s shoes.

Every day, millions of Americans drink water and other liquids from plastic bottles. More than 60 million of them are thrown away each day. Many of the plastic bottles end up in landfills or are burned with other waste products.

A San Francisco start-up company called Rothy’s, however, turns this plastic waste into environmentally friendly shoes. Roth Martin is the company’s co-founder. He explains how they turn plastic into soft material for women’s feet. They take the plastic, clean it, and break it down into small pieces. Then they press them through a device that makes soft fibers. Those fibers are then combined together. This is done by a 3D machine. It is designed to reduce waste while making the shoes. The knitted stuff and the inner part of the shoe are then attached to the shoe’s outer part, called the sole (鞋底). This outer sole is also made from environmentally friendly material: responsibly sourced no-carbon rubber.

Rothy’s shoes are sold online. They are flat shoes, with either a rounded or pointed toe. They come in different colors and designs. They cost either $ 2 or $ 145 per pair, depending on the design. After American actress Gwyneth Paltrow discovered them last year, the demand for the shoes grew. Martin says there is no shortage of material to fill that demand. “We’re not going to run out of water bottles any time soon. So we have a limitless supply of material, and I think that is a good sign for our future.” When the environmentally friendly shoes wear out, customers can return them at no cost to a company that uses the recycled materials to make other products.

For now, the shoes are only available to be shipped in the United States. However, the company says it will add international shipping in the near future.

1、How are used plastic bottles usually dealt with?

A.They are buried or burned.

B.They are used to make shoes.

C.They are changed into soft materials.

D.They arc returned to factories for reuse.

2、What does the underlined word knitted in the third paragraph mean?

A.Attached. B.Fixed.

C.Combined. D.Repaired.

3、Which of the following directly helped to increase the sales of Rothy’s shoes?

A.The design and color. B.The reasonable price.

C.Th e company’s advertisement.D.The star power of Gwyneth Paltrow.

4、What is the purpose of the text?

A.To advertise a new kind of shoes.

B.To describe the process of making shoes.

C.To introduce a new way of recycling plastic waste.

D.To stress the importance of environmental protection.

25.(10分)A recent trend in California restaurants shows new eating habits among those out to have an interesting dining experience. Appetizer(开胃品) seem to be the name of the games as diners turn away from the more traditional three-course meal in favor of smaller snacks sampled in various types of restaurants, bars and cafes. In this way, in the course of an evening out, you might go to a restaurant for a tasty dish to eat at one end of town, to a bar with some live music at the other end, then for a coffee, and finally back to the restaurant for a further appetizer.

Reasons for this trend are the fact that so many different types of restaurants have been set up recently, each with their own particular type of food and special atmosphere, combined with the increased quality in the type of snacks being offered. Gone are the cheese sticks of the old days, when appetizers were not really taken seriously. Some favorite snacks of the moment are slices of hot pizza, creamy fish-based dishes and crispy cakes and so on.

Prices for appetizers are not equal to a full meal; however, their new popularity has meant that are by no means as cheap as they used to be. Certainly, for that special occasion, a meal in a nice restaurant, complete with the piano performance, is hard to beat. However, if we see that this trend for “butterfly eating” —moving around several different places in one evening—continues, then all the traditional style restaurants may well have to provide their own appetizer bars as well!

1、Which of the following could best reflect the change of California people’s eating habits?

A.People love more interesting restaurants.

B.Most people eat less than they used to.

C.A full restaurant meal is losing popularity.

D.Food is combined with sports and games.

2、What can we learn from Paragraph 2 that ________.

A.appetizers used to be relatively important

B.the quality of snacks has been improved

C.restaurants have to cater for different customers

D.new-style appetizers fueled the boom of catering business

3、Diners who prefer appetizers of new types ________.

A.will be charged more

B.will be served better

C.can enjoy music performance

D.can eat in their neighborhood
