Today, I'd like to talk about what happens when celebrity role models get behind healthy habits, but at the same time, promote junk food.

Currently, there's mounting criticism of Michelle Obama's “ Let's Move! ” campaign, which fights childl obesity by en couragi ng youn gsters to become more physically active, and has sig ned on sin ger Beyonc and basketball player Shaquille O'Neal, both of whom also en dorse sodas, which are a major con tributor to the obesity epidemic.

Now there's a lot more evide nee of how powerful a celebrity —especially a professi onal athlete —can be in

in flue ncing childre n's behavior.

In a report published by the Rudd Cen ter for Food Policy and Obesity at Yale Uni versity, researchers studied 100 professi onal athletes and their en dorseme nt con tracts.

The team focused on athletes since they are theoretically the best role models for active, healthy lifestyles for childre n.

After sorting the deals by category, they determ ined that among the 512 brands associated with the athletes, most

in volved sport ing goods, followed closely by food and beverage bran ds.

Sports drinks, which are often high in sugar and calories made up most of the food and drink deals, with soft drinks and fast food filli ng out the rema in der.

Of the 46 beverages endorsed by professional athletes, 93% relied exclusively on sugar for all of their calories.

It's no surprise that high-profile athletes can in flue nce childre n's eat ing behaviors, but the scie ntists were able to qua ntify how prevale nt these en dorseme nts are in the childre n's environment.

Advertiseme nts featuri ng professi onal athletes and their en dorsed products tend to get impressive exposure on TV, radio, in print and on li ne.

And in 2010, the researchers reported that childre n ages 12 to 17 saw more athlete-e ndorsed food and beverage brand commercials tha n adults.

One reas on any campaig n wants a popular celebrity spokespers on is because kids are attracted to them no matter what they are doing.

We can't expect kids to turn off that admiration when the same person is selling sugar.

At best, kids might be con fused.

At worst, they'll think the messages about soda are the same as the messages about water, but those two beverages aren't the same.

If children are turning to athletes as role models, it's in their best interest if their idols are consistent.

Con siste nt messagi ng of positive behaviors will show healthier lifestyles for kids to follow.

Questi ons 23 to 25 are based on the record ing you have just heard.

Question 23. What is the aim of Michelle Obama's campaign?

Questi on 24. What does research find about advertiseme nts featuri ng professi onal athletes?

Questi on 25. What does the speaker think kids' idols should do?

In the past few mon ths, I've bee n traveli ng for weeks at a time with only one suitcase of clothes.

One day, I was in vited to an importa nt event, and I wan ted to wear someth ing special for it.

I looked through my suitcase but could n't find anything to wear.

I was lucky to be at the tech no logy conference the n, and I had access to 3D prin ters.

So I quickly designed a skirt on my computer, and I loaded the file on the printer.

It just prin ted the pieces overni ght.

The next morning, I just took all the pieces, assembled them together in my hotel room, and this is actually the skirt that I'm wearing right now.

So it was n't the first time that I prin ted clothes.

For my senior collection at fashion design school, I decided to try and 3D print an entire fashion collection from my home.

The problem was that I barely knew anything about 3D prin ti ng, and I had only nine mon ths to figure out how to print five fashi on able looks.

I always felt most creative when I worked from home.

I loved experimenting with new materials, and I always tried to develop new techniques to make the most unique textiles for my fashi on projects.

One summer break, I came here to New York for an intern ship at a fashi on house in Chin atow n.

We worked on two in credible dresses that were 3D prin ted.

They were amaz ing —like you can see here.

But I had a few problems with them.

They were made from hard plastics and that's why they were very breakable.

The models could n't sit in them, and they even got scratched from the plastics un der their arms.

So now, the main challenge was to find the right material for printing clothes with, I mean the material you feed the prin ter with. The breakthrough came when I was introduced to Filaflex, which is a new kind of printing material.

It's strong, yet very flexible.

And with it, I was able to print the first garme nt, a red jacket that had the word . “ freedom And actually, you can easily download this jacket, and change the word to something else, for example, your name or your sweetheart's n ame.

So I think in the future, materials will evolve, and they will look and feel like fabrics we know today, like cotton or silk.

Questi ons 19 to 22 are based on the record ing you have just heard.

Question 19. What does the speaker say about the skirt she is wearing now?

Question 20. When did the speaker start experimenting with 3D printing?

Question 21. What was the problem with the material the speaker worked on at a New York fashion house?

Questi on 22. What does the speaker say about Filaflex?

We've had fifty years of progress since that Ian dmark Surge on Gen eral's report back in 1964.

Over these years in credible things have take n place.

Our society has cha nged—cha nged in terms of tobacco use, in terms of its accepta nee of smok ing in public

establishme nts, in restaura nts, in bars.

So things have really changed for the better.

In additi on, smok ing rates have come dow n in the Un ited States.

We went from 43 percent of adult smokers in the United States to 18 percent currently.

So that's really made in credible headway, yet I have to emphasize the battle is not over, the war is not over.

Eighteen percent of American adults who are still smoking, basically 40 million people in our population.

That being said we have to realize also that of that whole group, we're going to have roughly a half millio n people

every year dying from smok ing related diseases.

So although we've made progress in a half cen tury the reality is we still have a lot of work to do.

So, you know, we in creas in gly see tough advertiseme nts on the air aga inst smok ing.

These ads are work ing.

In particular, the CDC the Center for Disease Control and Prevention came up with a series of advertisements from

former smokers called TIPS.

And that really was quite effective in terms of reduci ng the nu mber of smokers.

In addition, there's various policies that need to be implemented and further implemented in order to make us a

tobacco free society.

So we really have to work at the idea of using media, using those advertisements.

We have to look at really concen trati ng on the youth of America to make it more difficult to actually get cigarettes.

And in addition we have to look at the idea of pricing cigarettes appropriately so that ultimately it becomes a

hardship to use those products.

So, let's talk a little bit about packagi ng those products.

Other coun tries have much more graphic detail of the pote ntial dan gers of smok ing.

We're curre ntly worki ng closely; the office of the Surge on Gen eral is worki ng closely with the Food and Drug

Admini strati on, specifically the Cen ter for Tobacco Products

and are reanalyzing the whole row of the idea of the warning labels and the idea of how graphic they should be, and so there will probably be more information coming out on this in the near future.

Questi ons 23 to 25 are based on the record ing you have just heard.

Questi on 23 What is the n umber of smokers in America?

Question 24 What measures can be taken to make it harder to get cigarettes?

Question 25 What institution does the speaker most likely come from?

Conversation One M: Guess what? The worst food I've ever had was in France. W: Really? That's odd. I thought the French were all good cooks. M:Yes. That's right. I suppose it's really like anywhere else, though. You know, some places are good. Some bad. But it's really all our own fault. W: What do you mean? M: Well, it was the first time I'd been to France. This was years ago when I was at school. I went there with my parents' friends, from my father's school. They'd hired a coach to take them to Switzerland. W: A school trip? M: Right. Most of them had never been abroad before. We'd crossed the English Channel at night, and we set off through France, and breakfast time arrived, and the coach driver had arranged for us to stop at this little café. Th ere we all were, tired and hungry, and then we made the great discovery. W: What was that? M: Bacon and eggs. W: Fantastic! The real English breakfast. M: Yes. Anyway, we didn't know any better— so we had it, and ugh...! W: What was it like? Disgusting? M: Oh, it was incredible! They just got a bowl and put some fat in it. And then they put some bacon in the fat, broke an egg over the top and put the whole lot in the oven for about ten minutes. W: In the oven! You're joking. You can't cook bacon and eggs in the oven! M:Well. They must have done it that way. It was hot, but it wasn't cooked. There was just this egg floating about in gallons of fat and raw bacon. W: Did you actually eat it? M: No! Nobody did. They all wanted to turn round and go home. You know, back to teabags and fish and chips. You can't blame them really. Anyway, the next night we were all given another foreign speciality. W: What was that? M: Snails. That really finished them off. Lovely holiday that was! Questions 1 to 4 are based on the conversation you have just heard. Question 1. What did the woman think of the French? Question 2. Who did the man travel with on his first trip to Switzerland? Question 3. What does the man say about the breakfast at the little French café?

Writing (30 minutes) Directions: Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a short essay on innovation. Your essay should include the importance of innovation and measures to be taken to encourage innovation. You are required to write at least 150 words but no more than 200 words. It is universally acknowledged that innovation refers to being creative, unique and different. In fact, today it is impossibly difficult for us to image a 21st century without innovation. We should place a high value on innovation firstly because innovative spirit can enable an individual to ameliorate himself, so he can be equipped with capacity to see what others cannot see, be qualified for future career promotion, and be ready for meeting the forthcoming challenges. What’s more, we ought to attach importance to the role played by innovation in economic advancement. Put it another way, in this ever-changing world, innovation to economic growth is what water is to fish. To sum up, if innovation misses our attention in any possible way, we will suffer a great loss beyond imagination. In order to encourage innovation, it is wise for us to take some feasible measures. For example, mass media should greatly publicize the significance of creative spirit and encourage the public to cultivate awareness of innovation. Besides, those who manage to innovate should be awarded generous prize. Though there is a long way ahead to go, I am firmly certain that the shared efforts will be paid off.

Your essay should include the importance of invention and measures to be taken to encourage invention. You are required to write at least 150 words but no more than 200 words. My View on Invention Drawing a comparison between modern life and ancient life, we cannot imagine what life will be like now without invention. Invention must be attached great importance to, as it is invention that contributes to the advancement of our society. There are several examples which can be cited to illustrate this concept. I can think of no better illustration than the following one. If Edison hadn't invented the light bulb, we would have lived a life as the blind in the night. Given that invention plays such an essential role in our life, what can we do to cultivate this precious spirit? For one thing, it is advisable for the social media and publicity department to vigorously inform the public of the importance of invention. For another, the relevant authority should set up favorable regulations to encourage invention. For example, they can set up the practice of giving premiums or issuing patent certificate to inventors.

Today, I'd like to talk about what happens when celebrity role models get behind healthy habits, but at the same time, promote junk food. Currently, there's mounting criticism of Michelle Obama's “Let's Move!” campaign, which fights childhood obesity by encouraging youngsters to become more physically active, and has signed on singer Beyoncé and basketball player Shaquille O'Neal, both of whom also endorse sodas, which are a major contributor to the obesity epidemic. Now there's a lot more evidence of how powerful a celebrity— especially a professional athlete— can be in influencing children's behavior. In a report published by the Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity at Yale University, researchers studied 100 professional athletes and their endorsement contracts. The team focused on athletes since they are theoretically the best role models for active, healthy lifestyles for children. After sorting the deals by category, they determined that among the 512 brands associated with the athletes, most involved sporting goods, followed closely by food and beverage brands. Sports drinks, which are often high in sugar and calories made up most of the food and drink deals, with soft drinks and fast food filling out the remainder. Of the 46 beverages endorsed by professional athletes, 93% relied exclusively on sugar for all of their calories. It's no surprise that high-profile athletes can influence children's eating behaviors, but the scientists were able to quantify how prevalent these endorsements are in the children's environment. Advertisements featuring professional athletes and their endorsed products tend to get impressive exposure on TV, radio, in print and online. And in 2010, the researchers reported that children ages 12 to 17 saw more athlete-endorsed food and beverage brand commercials than adults. One reason any campaign wants a popular celebrity spokesperson is because kids are attracted to them no matter what they are doing. We can't expect kids to turn off that admiration when the same person is selling sugar. At best, kids might be confused. At worst, they'll think the messages about soda are the same as the messages about water, but those two beverages aren't the same. If children are turning to athletes as role models, it's in their best interest if their idols are consistent. Consistent messaging of positive behaviors will show healthier lifestyles for kids to follow. Questions 23 to 25 are based on the recording you have just heard. Question 23. What is the aim of Michelle Obama's campaign? Question 24. What does research find about advertisements featuring professional athletes? Question 25. What does the speaker think kids' idols should do?
