the UK?

Longleat Safari (游猎)& Adventure Park

Wiltshire’s Longleat Safari & Adventure Park is the UK’s oldest safari

park. Opened in 1966, it was the first safari park opened outside Africa. It was

just a 100-acre lion reserve (保护区)in the beginning, but it has grown fast

It was an extremely hot day. My younger brother Walt and I had decided to go swimming in a deep swimming hole across Mr. Blickez’s farm and through some woods, because it would be the only way to cool ourselves down.

The only problem with our plan was that this farm was guarded by a huge mean (凶暴的) Hereford bull (公牛). Mr. Blickez had told us that Elsie was the meanest bull in town, maybe even in the county and we believed in him. But the hotter it got, the more we thought there was something fishy about what he said. For one thing, we remembered Mr. Blickez liked telling tall tales; for another, Elsie seemed like a strange name for a bull. Finally, I talked Mom into asking permission for us to walk through the farm, and Mr. Blickez agreed.

On our way across the farm, we stopped at the fence to admire the swimming hole. The sun shone brightly across the cool waters. We couldn’t wait to get there. Suddenly, Walt shouted loudly. Elsie had run to him and was licking (舔) his back. I immediately hid under the fence. However, when I looked up, I saw that Elsie wasn’t a big mean bull at all. She was just a friendly young cow, and she was going to keep licking my brother’s back as long as he stood still.

When we discovered the truth, we were so happy. We then ran to the swimming hole and jumped in. The water was just as wonderful as we had dreamed. After that day, we had many good days and we often visited our secret swimming hole guarded by the so-called “big mean bull”. .

7. When Elsie saw the author’s brother, she _______.

A. tried to attack him

B. showed her friendliness

C. immediately ran away

D. tried to drive him away

8. What’s the passage mainly about?

A. The bull guarding Mr.Blickez’s farm.

B. How friendly the so-called mean bull was.

C. The story of visiting the swimming hole.

D. How the author changed his attitude to Joanie.

Do you like going to a theater to wat ch live performances? If you do, I’m not alone.

Live performances at theaters interest different groups of people from rich people to office workers. If you go to any theater and look at its audience, you will find it is made up of teenagers, the elderly and anyone in between. One part of it is due to the marketing and the show itself. For example, Hair isn’t going to interest the same audience as My Fair Lady. Another part of it is due to the area in which you live. The Palace Theater in Manchester, for example, interests a more urban (城市的)crowd than the Leddy Center in Epping. All of these people have an interest in the magic of live performances and they go to the theater for different reasons.

There is nothing better than live theatre performances to increase your cultural awareness (意识) When you go to see a live theater performance, no matter whether it is a musical or a play, you are improving your knowledge of the world around you. Some people go to the theater to have fun and escape their troubles; others, particularly rich people, go to the theater to develop their knowledge of the world around them. Both of them are very good reasons for going to see live theater performances. However, personally, I often go to the theater more to have fun than anything else.

Everyone has the right to enjoy any performance, whether it’s a world-famous performance by the New Hampshire Ballet or a second-rate performance by your local community theater. The main thing to remember is whether you are there to heighten your awareness of the culture or to get away from your problems. You should appreciate the performance for what it is, because too many people these days don’t know enough about the arts.

9. What does the author mean by saying she is not alone?

A. She no longer feels lonely.

B. She loves watching popular performances.

C. She often visits a theater with a friend.

D. She likes going to the theater.

10. The example of Hair and My Fair Lady shows that______.

A. many shows have a lot in common

B. some shows are better than others

C. not all shows are attractive to the audience

D. different shows interest different people

11. According to the author, going to the theater is helpful because of the

following reasons EXCEPT______.

A. imp roving the ability to read others’ feelings

B. being a way of learning something

C. being a way of entertainment

D. improving people’s understanding of their own or other cultures

D

There is no such thing as “the perfect parent” and everyone has to learn

how to educate their children. Parents may be annoyed by their kids and yell (大喊) at then, but they should be careful not to yell at the children.

Children need to be loved and cared for. They need positive encouragement, which will help them believe that they can succeed in their lives. This will also give them opportunities to explore and try out new things. If parents yell at their children, the emotional (感情的) development of them can be badly affected.

Though parents think they are protecting their children at all times, the children will not feel safe when they are yelled at. It can be a very bad experience for children. This can make it difficult for children to enjoy parents’ presence (在场) if they are being yelled at.

A person needs to be a good listener and also should learn to give others a chance to talk. When a child grows up with parents who often yell, this will not happen. When parents often yell, their children will also learn the same thing and they will find it natural not to listen to anyone.

The confidence (自信) of a child is built up by his or her parents. There is no doubt that yelling will only decrease their confidence level. The words used while yelling can affect them greatly. They will not want to do anything without asking for their parents’ permission.

12. According to Paragraph 2, if a child is often yelled at, he/she will _______.

A. have many bad experiences

B. learn to yell at others pretty soon

C. suffer poor emotional development

D. want to escape from his or her home

13. Paragraph 3 shows that the children who are often yelled at are hard to feel _______.

A. protected

B. safe

C. parents’presence

D. self-confidence

14.What can be inferred from the last paragraph about the children who are often

yelled at?

A. They try their best to be confident.

B. They doubt everything around them,

C. They are not able to make their own decisions.

D. They will become dangerous to others.

15. Which is the best title of the passage?

A. Be a perfect parent

B. Don’t yell at your children

C. Parents should learn how to educate the children

D. Parents should protect their children

Some people go through life positively. 16 Luckily, you can learn to become positive. If you become more positive, things will become brighter day by

day. It’s not because things are any better, but because how you look at them will change. Here are a few things positive people do differently.

They find something to look forward to every day. W hether it’s catching

up on a favorite TV show, trying out a new dessert recipe, or having a phone conversation with a friend in another town, these things don’t have to be big.

17 .

18 Joy isn’t so hard to find. You can even find joy in the tiniest things — a funny text from a friend or a beautiful sunny day — because it adds up. Soon, you won’t have to stop and smell the roses because you’ll be smelling them all the time. So learn to enjoy the small things in your life.

They stay busy. Being busy doesn’t mean living under much stress.19 It means having som ething to look forward to every day. Start a hobby. Fill your weekends with your hobby. Remember, living your life to the fullest is up to you.

20 When in doubt, choose kindness. Positive people look on the bright side, sure, but they also tend to pay it forward by passing on their positive energy to others. Giving is generous, but it also makes the giver feel even bett er. Now that’s a win-win. Be kind to others and others will treat you

in the same way. And your days will be much better.

A. It means filling your life with good activities.

B. They celebrate small things.

C. They are kind.

D. They do something for fun.

E. Kindness is most important.

F. Having activities to expect will make you happy every day.

G. But not all of us were born to be positive.

Poor relationship between parents and their children are very common. Whether we like it or not, our parents are responsible for us at least until we're out of high school. So rather than get upset about that fact, maybe we should focus on some ways to make our relationship better. The best way, in my opinion, is to learn to really communicate with my parents. When I find myself arguing with my mom and dad, I try to stop. If I can manage to stop myself from talking, I usually find that I can calm down quickly. I guess I'm usually acting out of emotion rather than logic(逻辑). But if I can stop arguing for a minute, it seems that my opinion changes and I start to realize that I'm a bit childish. Emotionally I may still be upset, but logically I understand that yelling(大 叫大嚷) and fighting surely won't make things better. Once I've stopped arguing, I look at my parents in the eye. You'd be amazed at how much easier it is to communicate with your parents when you've actually looking at them. Looking away doesn't do much of anything except for giving them the impression that I'm not listening or that I don't care. It's much easier to see things eye to eye when you're physically seeing them eye to eye. Finally, I listen to what they're saying (or at least I try). Communication can't happen unless both sides hear and listen to each other. There is nothing wrong with my hearing, but that doesn't mean I always listen to the sounds that people are making. When I argue with my parents, I can physically hear what they're saying without mentally listening to it. Whether I admit it or not, my parents' experience can actually help them give me

In the 1960s, medical researchers Thomas Holmes and Richard Rahe developed a checklist of stressful events. They appreciated the tricky point that any major change can be stressful. Bad events like "serious illness of a family member" were high on the list, but so were some helpful life-changing events like marriage. When you take the Holmes-Rahe test you must remember that the score does not show how you deal with stress - it only shows how much you have to deal with. And we now know that the way you deal with these events dramatically (戏剧性的) affects your chances of staying healthy. By the early 1970s, hundreds of similar studies had followed Holmes and Rahe. And millions of Americans who work and live under stress worried over the reports. Somehow the research got boiled down to a memorable message. Women's magazines ran titles like "Stress causes illness". If you want to stay physically and mentally healthy the articles said avoid stressful events. But such simplistic advice is impossible to follow. Even if stressful events are dangerous , many — like the death of a loved one — are impossible to avoid. Moreover, any warning to avoid all stressful events is a prescription (处方) for staying away from chances as well as trouble. Since any change can be stressful, a person who wanted to be completely free of stress would never marry, have a child, take a new job or move. The idea that all stress makes you sick also takes no notice of a lot of what we know about people. It supposes we' re all vulnerable and not active in the face of the difficult situation. But what about human ability and creativity? Many come through periods of stress with more physical and mental strength than they had before. We also know that a long time without change or challenge can lead to boredom and physical and mental pressure. 1. The result of Holmes-Rahe’s medical research tells us _________________. A. the way you deal with major events may cause stress B. what should be done to avoid stress C. what kind of event would cause stress D. how to deal with sudden changes in life 2. The studies on stress in the early 1970s led to ___________________. A. popular avoidance of stressful jobs B. great fear over the mental disorder
