Q:Hi, Mr. Jackson. You have been working in China for three years. Can you tell us how you feel about the differences in business communication style between Chinese and American businessmen? A: With pleasure. I think there are at least(至少)two differences in the way of business communication between Chinese and American business people. First, Chinese businessmen tend to(倾向于)have business negotiations in a rather indirect manner(迂回婉转), as opposed to(与...截然相反,对照) the more direct manner of American business people.

The Chinese take time(花时间) to learn if their prospective business contacts(潜在客户) are really reliable, for example, by inviting them to a party and socializing with(交流交往) them. In contrast(与之相反), American usually act with(以...方式行事) the “get-down-to-business-first”mentality(“公务为先”的心态).

Second, the decision making process of Chinese companies is generally slow and time-consuming(耗时的). This is because most Chinese companies keep to the“bottom-up(自下而上), then top-down(自上而下) and then bottom-up”decision-making principle which involves(牵扯) many people at different levels. Keep to...principle(遵循...原则)

Q:The American way of doing business often strikes us Chinese as very aggressive(咄咄逼人). Were you aware of(注意到) this in your collaboration with(合作) your Chinese colleagues?

A: Well, we are more direct and straightforward(直截了当)than most Chinese, I would say, due to(因为) our different cultural traditions. I noticed that a lot of Chinese often avoid saying a clear “no”(不明确地说不)just to be polite. Sometimes my Chinese colleagues say “yes” not to express agreement, but only to show that they are listening.

A: Yes, understanding these differences, I believe, will be a first step toward(建立)establishing a firm business relationship between American and Chinese companies.

A: I would say the American-type, or the top-down, management emphasizes(注重) efficiency, and competition among workers, while the Chinese-type management gives priority to(优先) careful planning and encourages cooperation among workers, and between workers and the management. Thus, while the American-type management often frustrates(使...沮丧) many workers, the

Q:Talking about workers’ attitude toward(对...态度)their work, how do the Chinese and the American differ in this respect/aspect(在这方面)?

A: I think most Chinese view work as(把..看做) essential for having membership in a community(团体中的一份子). They believe that work allow them to have a sense of belonging(归属感) in a community. In other words(换言之,换句话说), work is necessary for them to gain social acceptance(得到社会认可) in the society.

A:我认为,大多数中国人将工作视为能使自己成为整个团体中的一份子的必不可缺的条件。中国人相信,工作使自己有了团体的归属感。换言之,中国人为了得到社会的认可,必须工作。

That is why many Chinese managers and employees work so hard to maintain their position(保住地位) in their company. Also, they see work as the most important thing in life. That is(也就是说), they have tried to find the meaning of life through their jobs.

While the Chinese work ethic(工作观) is based on(在...基础上) social pressure and community belonging(团体归属感), the American work ethic seems to be more individual oriented(个体取向性).

A: It is difficult to decide which is better than which, because there are some merits and demerits to both type of management. My suggestion is that people of both countries should learn from each other. A:很难判断孰优孰劣,因为这两种经营方式各有自己的长处和短处。我希望我们两国人民应该互相学习,取长补短。

I will say that in recent years, the merits of the Chinese way, or rather, the Oriental way(东方方式), of management are beginning to be recognized by an increasing number of(越来越多的) people in the West.

应该说近年来中国人的经营方式,更确切地说是东方人的经营方式,开始为越来越多的西方人所认识。

This more humane(人性化) Oriental way of management seems to offer a great deal(大量)to the executives (管理人士)of our American indu stries(产业界)
