Equipped with a microbiology PhD and his faith, he travelled back to Africa. There, he found a continent ecologically rich, diverse and capable of producing food. He believes drought wasn’t the only reason for widespread hunger, and that sustainability had been left out.Nzamujo began designing a “zero waste” agriculture system that would not only increase food security, but also help the environment and create jobs. In 1985, he started his sustainable farm “Songhai” in the West African country of Benin.Nzamajo lives on the farm and constantly updates his techniques. He credits his degrees in science and engineering for Songhai’s success. But he also thanks his spiritual and cultural roots, and his father — a driving force in his life who encouraged him to pursue his studies to the highest degree and to use Songhai to share his knowledge.Songhai has several “eco-literacy” development programs. They range from 18-month training courses for farmer-enterprisers, to shorter stays to learn techniques like weeding. People come from all over the world to study Nzamujo’s methods. After seeing success on his first zero waste farm, he expanded throughout Benin and western Africa. Today, the Songhai model is applied across the continent, including Nigena. Uganda, Sierra Leone and Liberia, Nzamujo says they've trained more than 7.000farmer-enterprisers and more than 30, 000 people in total since it began.Nzamujo believes zero waste agriculture is now steadily tackling the issues he set out to defeat, hunger, unemployment and environmental declines. And he wants to see it go further. 4.Which factor related to famine was unnoticed in Nzamujo’s eyes?A.Poor soil.B.Water shortage.C.Lack of resources.D.Unsustainability.5.What does the author intend to do in paragraph 3?A.Introduce a solution.B.Give examples to the readers.C.Add some background information.D.Summarize the previous paragraphs. 6.How does Songhai help to ease the problem of famine?A.By offering land.B.By trading seeds.C.By educating farmers.D.By selling technology.7.Which of the following best describes Nzamujo?A.Critical and careful.B.Learned and responsible. C.Optimistic and generous.D.Considerate and ambitious.Known as a “living fossil”, the Chinese sturgeon(中华鲟)is a very precious species. It is believed to have lived alongside the dinosaurs more than 140 million years ago. Although dinosaurs are long since gone, the Chinese sturgeon still exists. However, the species has been listed as ‘‘Critically Endangered’’ on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List of Threatened Species. On May 14,Shanghai legislators(立法机构)passed a new law protecting the Chinese sturgeon, emphasizing “regional cooperation”, according to China Daily. “This is the first local legislation in the country to protect one endangered fish,” said Ding Wei, director of the legislative affairs committee of the Shanghai Municipal People’s Congress.Taken effect on June 6, the regulation urges cooperation in law enforcement(实施), scientific research and rescue of the species between Shanghai and other provinces and regions in the Yangtze River basin, according to People’s Daily. The need for collaborative efforts is due to the living habitat of the Chinese sturgeon. As an anadromous(溯河产卵的)species, it mainly lives in the Yangtze River and depends on the Vangtze estuary(河口)for migration. The protection of the Chinese sturgeon is urgent. China began the artificial breeding and release of the fish in 1984. However, very few of the fanned fish have survived in the wild, the number of which is less than 1000, according to a report by the Shanghai Observer.Whether this species can be preserved depends on the natural population. “If the natural population is not well protected, the Chinese sturgeon is in danger of extinction.” Li Furong, vice chairperson of the Agricultural and Rural Affairs Committee of Shanghai Municipal People’s Congress, said in the report.Since Jan 1 of this year, a 10-year fishing ban on key areas of the Yangtze River basin has been issued, covering 332 nature reserves, which includes Shanghai’s Chinese sturgeon nature reserve.8.What is the new law passed on May 14 in Shanghai about?A.Forbidding fishing in the area.B.Protecting the Chinese sturgeon.C.Increasing the reproduction of the Chinese sturgeon.D.Listing the Chinese sturgeon as an endangered species.9.What do we know about the Chinese sturgeon?A.It mainly lives in the waters of Shanghai.B.Artificial breeding technology costs too much.C.Farmed fish multiplies quickly.D.Saving the species depends on protecting their natural population.10.What’s the meaning of the underlined word “collaborative” in paragraph 4? A.immediate B.joint C.urgent D.further 11.What’s the best title of the passage?A.The Chinese Sturgeon: Living FossilB.Artificial Breeding: Future of the Chinese SturgeonC.A New Law for a FishD.Call for Conservation of the Chinese SturgeonAn individual from an unknown hominid (原始人类) species walked across a field of wet, volcanic ash in what is now East Africa around 3.66 million years ago, leaving behind a handful of footprints. Those five ancient footprints, largely ignored since they were partly unearthed at Tanzania’s Laetoli site in 1976, show features of upright walking by a hominid, a new study finds. Researchers had previously considered them hard to classify, possibly produced by a young bear that took a few steps while standing. But the latest analysis refutes that suggestion.McNutt, DeSilva, who started the new investigation as a Dartmouth College graduate student, and their colleagues fully dug out and cleaned the five Laetoli footprints in June 2019. Then they measured, photographed and 3-D scanned the ancient tracks. McNutt’s group focused on two footprints that were particularly well-preserved. Foot shapes, sizes, and walking characteristics of the Laetoli individual differed in various ways from those of other hominid individuals at the same site. The prints also didn’t match those from modem black bears and modem chimps (黑猩猩) walking upright. The Laetoli individual possessed a wider, more chimplike foot than humans, the researchers say. Its big toe stuck out slightly from the second toe (脚趾), but not to the degreeobserved in chimps. On one step, the Laetoli individual’s left leg crossed in front of the right leg, leaving a left footprint directly in front of the previous track. People may cross-step in this way when trying to regain balance. And bears and chimps assume a relatively wide standing due to knee and other bone arrangements that prevent them from walking like the Laetoli individual and probably from cross-stepping, the scientists say.Given that only two of the ancient footprints are complete enough to analyze thoroughly, the possibility that a chimp other than a hominid made the Laetoli footprints can’t be ruled out, says William Harcourt Smith, a scientist at Lehman College. But evidence ofcross-stepping is enough to prove that it was a hominid track maker, he says.12.What does the underlined word “refutes” in Paragraph 2 mean?A.Objects to.B.Supports.C.Puts forward.D.Criticizes. 13.Why do researchers think the footprints were unlike those of bears or chimps?A.They are less chimplike.B.They have toes sticking out.C.They show relatively wide standing.D.They possess features of cross-stepping. 14.What does William think of the new research finding?A.It’s convincing.B.It’s challenging.C.It’s confusing.D.It’s conflicting.15.What is the purpose of the text?A.To describe a major event.B.To share a new discovery.C.To introduce an unknown species.D.To settle a huge disagreement.二、七选五Now I live in Paris. Blake, who has a genetic bone and muscle disorder and stands a little under 4 feet tall, couldn't find jeans or dresses in her size. Paging through magazines, she didn't see a singleperson like her. “That would have been a game changer for me,” says Blake, who had 26 surgeries before age 17 to treat her Freeman-Sheldon syndrome. So far,Blake, 39, has spent her adult life trying to make up for that. She is a disability-rights activist as well as a freelance (自由职业) writer whose work has appeared in the New York Times and Glamour, but she gained a national following in 2019 after clapping back at people who made ugly comments about her online.l To gimswrBlake posted a new selfie (自拍) every day. “Some selfies were serious, like the ones where I talked about disabilities or how I was feeling on not-so-good days. Some were fun and silly, but each was a celebration, and each carried a message. However, some people said that I should be banned from posting photos of myself because I'm too ugly. I feel like every time I post a selfie or share something about my life as a disabled woman, it is representation to fight that,”Blake told WBUR.Her fans went wild, calling Blake a goddess and a powerful: woman. Among her fans is Mindy Scheier, the founder and CEO of Runway of Dreams, which displays fashion for people with disabilities. Last fall, Scheier asked Blake to be one of the event's 24 models.“It was a little scary,” Blake says of modeling. But she's glad she took the challenge. “When disabled people are included, it sends a message that we should get a seat at the table in all aspects of life.”1. The early life of the green sea turtle (海龟) is full of danger. Only one in 1,000 baby sea turtles survive to adulthood (成年). From its home in the sand, it breaks its egg with an egg tooth. Its mother is not there to help it. Instead, it is greeted by crabs, coyotes, and dogs waiting to eat it for dinner. To survive, the baby turtle must hide in the sand until night. Then, it moves slowly to the sea.The small turtle must swim hard to reach the ocean waters. In the sea, it tries hard to find food. It must also keep itself from being food for fish.As dangerous as the sea turtle’s life is in the natural world, its most dangerous enemies are humans. The rubbish left by humans in the ocean causes problems for the small green sea turtle. A little turtle might eat a piece of plastic (塑料) in the sea. It might also eat oil on the ocean’s surface. Young turtles also get caught in fishing nets. There are laws against hunting sea turtles. Still, many are hunted, both for their meat and for their shells (壳). All of these dangers must be prevented.Sea turtles that do survive to grow into adulthood go through many changes. For example, adult green sea turtles weigh about 500 pounds. They stop eating jellyfish and other meat and eat only plants. And they may plan a trip to go back home again. A mother sea turtle goes back to the beach where she was born. Slowly but surely, we’re moving closer and closer to 5G world. From smart-home security to self-driving cars, all the internet-connected devices in our life will be able to talk to each other at lightning-fast speeds with reduced delay. Objectively speaking, the fastest 4G download speeds in the US top out at an average of 19.42Mbps. But by comparison 5G promises gigabit (千兆) speeds. “5G is one of those heralds (使者),along with artificial intelligence, of this coming data age.” said Steve Koenig, senior director of market research for the Consumer Technology Association. The self-driving vehicle is a great emblem of this data age, and that is to say, it is a sign of time, because with one single task, driving, you have massive amounts of data coming from the vehicle itself, and a variety of sensors are collecting a lot of information to model its environment as it moves. It’s pulling in data from other vehicles about road conditions down the lane. It could be weather information, and also connected infrastructure (基础设施) construction. There’s lots of data behind that task, which is why we need the high speed. And virtual reality glasses and headsets haven’t yet broken the mainstream, but tech companies are joyfully betting that these devices will eventually replace our smartphones. With 5G, that could actually happen. This is notable because companies such as Apple are reportedly developing AR glasses to assist — or even replace — smartphones.Ericsson stated at February's Mobile World Congress how smart glasses could become faster and lighter with a 5G connection, because instead of being weighed down with components, the glasses could rely on hardware for processing power. But don’t get too excited. There’s still a lot of work to be done in the meantime, including various trials to make sure the radios play nicely with hardware and infrastructure co nstruction so 5G isn’t concentrated only in big cities.1. What is the first paragraph mainly about?A.The security of 5G. B.The present world of 5G.C.The future of 5G. D.The super speed of 5G.2. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “emblem” in Paragraph 2?A.exhibition B.symbol C.sponsor D.explanation3. What do some tech companies expect of virtual reality glasses?A.They will be heavier than present ones. B.They will process power on their own.D.They will take the place of smartphones.C.They will bring a big fortune to techcompanies.4. What will the author tell us in the next paragraph?A.How to fully expand 5G coverage. B.How to effectively reduce 5G trials.C.How to nicely operate 5G hardware. D.How to widely construct 5G big cities.5. Taking good notes is a time-saving skill that will help you to become a better student in several ways. 1 .

Frances Halladay's story.BAn afternoon nap(午睡)is one of the joys of life, although too much napping could signal all is not well. In some cultures, people will have a daily nap—this is fine. The warning comes when people start sleeping during the daytime, when they did not sleep before. There is certainly a good reason to believe that daytime sleepiness—as in the Alzheimer's disease study—can be a marker of an underlying condition. For most people, napping during the day is mainly a sign that you are not getting enough sleep at night, says Dr. Neill Stanley,a sleep expert.“If yo u feel sleepy during the day,you should think about taking a nap. That is what the body needs —it doesn't need to be kept awake with caffeine. It needs sleep.”The feeling we should notice is“sleepiness”,he says.“It's not tiredness, which could be more psych ological and linked to stress.”So how do you nap well The key thing, says Stanley,is how long your nap lasts. Choose either a 20-or 90-minute nap.“When you fall asleep, you'll quickly go through the lighter stages of sleep into your first period of deep sleep. You don't want to wake up because that's when you wake and feel worse than you didbefore.”Napping for 20 minutes means you will wake up before you go into deep sleep;napping for 90 minutes means you'll complete a sleep cycle.Once you factor in the time it takes to fall asleep—“Some people are better at napping than others but,”says Stanley,“a healthy adult will fall asleep in between 5 and 12 minutes.”—you can set an alarm, allowing a 30-to 40-minute period for a short nap,and up to two hours for a longer one.A good time to nap is during the body's natural dip in the afternoon, between 2 p. m. and 4p. m.“You don't really want to be napping much past that because then you are going to be eating into your night-time sleep,”Stanley says. How to Have A Successful Nap2CIn the 17th century, the Netherlands experienced a period of artistic prosperity known as the Dutch Golden Age. During this period, artists found inspiration in Northern Renaissance painting techniques, contributing to masterpieces like Girl with a Pearl Earring by Johannes Vermeer.Known as the“Mona Lisa of the North”,this painting represents the best of Dutch art and it has become one of the most beloved paintings in art history.Dutch artist Johannes Vermeer is famous for his paintings of contemporary Delft,a city in Holland where the artist was born, lived and died. Girl with a Pearl Earring is Vermeer's most well-known work of art. However,it did not attain international fameat its time of completion. That came about at the end of the 20th century, when it was featured in a special exhibition in Washington,D. C.Girl with a Pearl Earring does not show a specific person. Instead,it shows an unknown girl dressed in grand clothing, who is“like a vision coming from the darkness”and“belongs to no specific time or place”,art historian Arthur K. Wheelock explained.Vermeer is known for his ability to create shapes and forms using light rather than lines. This characteristic approach is particularly evident in Girl with a Pearl Earring. First,he would“invent”,or create an initial drawing on the canvas. Then,he made a single colored underpainting(底层色).Next,he added color. And,finally,in order to make the piece extraordinarily bright,he would apply a thin layer of glaze(釉)to certain parts of the painting. In addition to its fascinating context and appealing beauty, the piece is celebrated for the mystery that surrounds it.“When you think about Mona Lisa, she is also looking at us,but she isn't engaging—she’s sitting back in the painting,self-contained,”Tracy Chevalier, the author of The New York Times’best-selling historical novel,Girl with a Pearl Earring, points out.“While the girl with a pearl earring in the painting is right there—there is nothing between her and us. She has this magical quality of being incredibly open and yet mysterious at the same time—and that is what makes her so appeal ing.”8. Unless we are medically restricted or strictly dieting,we are not likely to resist inviting fare simply because we recognize the lack of nutritional value.Devina Wadhera and Elizabech D. Capaldi-Phillips in A Review of Visual Cues Associated with Food recognize the impact of sensory cues(信号)on food consumption and enjoyment, and the potential they have to promote healthy eating behavior. They cite previous research in providing some interesting examples of thevisual impact of different color schemes(方案)on taste and food enjoyment. They note that pink food on a white plate was considered sweeter and more flavorful than the same food on a black plate. Apparently,we consume with more of our senses than we realize. So given the rainbow of colors around us when faced with so many appealing food choices,is there any way to control our appetite Thankfully, some research says yes.Oliver Genschow demonstrated that when it comes to eating less colors impact consumption! They specifically researched the effect of the color red. They found that people ate fewer pretzels when using a red plate,as opposed to white or blue, and drank less from a red cup than a blue cup. They suggest that the color red reduces food and drink intake by functioning as a stop signal. But when it comes to healthy eating, instead of putting on a pair of sunglasses to block the inviting hues of food cues, consider the value of discipline. Healthy eating involves intentional choices, not mindless responses to sensory cues. And before you invest in many red tableware to slim down, remember that what goes onto those plates is much more important.12. What may be a major reason for us to refuse eye-catching foodA.
