For questions 26-28, markY (for YES) if the statement agrees with the information given in the passage, N (for NO) if the statement contradicts the information given in the passage, or NG (for NOT GIVEN) if the statement is not given in the passage. For Questions 29 and 30, complete the sentences with the information given in the passage. English Around the WorldDo you speak English? That question is frequently asked in countries around the world. Although there are almost 3,000 languages, English is most universal. It is the official language in over 40 countries and the most used language in international business, science, and medicine.Even in countries where English is not the first language, a number of English words are used. No other language is borrowed from more often than English. For example, a French worker looks forward to le weekend. A Romanian shopper catches a ride on the trolleybus. A Chinese businessperson talks on the te le fung (telephone). Some Swedish schoolgirls have even started making the plural forms of words by adding –s, as in English, instead of the Swedish way of adding –ar, -or or –er.Hundreds of words borrowed from English can now be found in other languages, words such as soda, hotel, golf, tennis, jeans, O.K., baseball, and airport. Although many words are used just as they are, others are changed to make them more like the native language and therefore easier to say and remember. Thus a Japanese worker gets stuck in rushawa (rush-hour) traffic. A Spanish mother tells her child to put on her sueter (sweater), and a Ukrainian man goes to the barber for a herkot (haircut)English is everywhere. It is on signs, clothing, soft drinks, and household products around the world. In spite of the popularity of English words and phrases, however, they are not always welcome. Some people think that the use of English words is threatening the purity of their native language. The French started a commission to try to stop, and even give fines for the use of English words. Some countries have tried to eliminate English as their official language in order to save their native tongue. On the other hand, some people believe that English should be the international language. They give a number of reasons for this, such as the cost of translations and the misunderstanding that result from language differences. They believe that things would run more smoothly if everyone spoke the same language.“What would become of our many different cultures?‖ others argue. ―Certainly the world would be a much less interesting place,‖ they add. Indeed, there is serious concern on the part of language experts that many languages are disappearing. In some parts of the world, only a few people are left who can speak the native tongue. In Ireland, for example, there are only a few small areas where people speak Gaelic, the native Irish language. One expert says that half of the world’s languages are dying because children are no longer learning them.Languages have changed and disappeared throughout history. With progress, change is inevitable. Some things are worth preserving. Others are not. The difficulty is in deciding what is worth keeping. Because people have very strong feelings about the importance of their native language, we probably will not have a universal language in the near future. What is certain, however, is thatEnglish words will continue to pop up everywhere, from Taiwan to Timbuktu, whether some people like it or not.26. From the first paragraph, we know that at present English is used more widely in different fields than any other language in the world.27. Rushawa in Japan and sueter in Spanish show that some English words are changed so that they may be learned more quickly than the words in the native languages by the local people.28. In 1975, the French set up a commission to try to eliminate English as their official language.29. The author uses the example of Gaelic to illustrate that .30. At the end of the passage, the author draws a conclusion that . Section B Reading in Depth (10*2= 20 Points)Directions: In this section there are two passages each with five incomplete statements. Read each passage and complete the statements with one of the four given choices marked A, B, C, and D according to your comprehension. You should decide on the best choice and then write down the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.Passage OneQuestions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage.Part AIn 2001 the United Kingdom was hit again by foot-and-mouth disease, the first time since the 1960s, causing a national crisis. However, much of the panic and confusion was spread largely as a result of ignorance of the disease.Foot-and-mouth is a highly contagious (传染性的) disease found in Africa, South America, Asia, the Middle East and parts of Europe. It affects cloven-footed (偶蹄) domestic animals such as cows, pigs, sheep and goats, as well as wild animals like rats and deer and zoo animals such as elephants. Horses, however, cannot contract (感染) the disease. It is very rare for humans to catch the disease. Indeed, only one case has been recorded in Great Britain and that was in 1967.Part BFoot-and-mouth disease is insidious (潜伏的)and can be spread by direct and indirect contact with infected animal. The disease can be spread on the wind, and can be spread by people, equipment or vehicles which have been in contact with the disease.Although the authorities do not really know where this latest outbreak of the disease originated, it can enter a country in frozen meat imported from other countries where the disease is common. Unlike Mad Cow Disease (BSE) and the human equivalent CJD, foot-and-mouth has no implication (牵连)for the human food chain. Any meat, milk, cheese and other dairy products can be consumed quite safely.Part CIt seems that the only way to control the disease is to kill infected animals. There is no cure for the disease, and although adult animals normally recover in 2-3 weeks, they sadly remain carriers of the virus for up to two years. From the time the disease was first reported to the time the epidemic(流行)was officially declared over, one and a half million and more domestic animals were slaughtered and large areas of the countryside were closed to the public. These areas included parks, woods and forests, and various leisure attractions situated in the countryside.31. The main purpose of writing this passage is_______.A. to warn people of the danger of the diseaseB. to describe the disaster by the diseaseC. to share some of the facts about the diseaseD. to declare the success in control of the disease32. Foot-and-mouth disease is insidious because it is spread_______.A. by farmers and farm vehiclesB. in so many different waysC. by being carried in the airD. mainly by people who have been in contact with infected animals33. That foot-and-mouth disease is different from Mad Cow Disease mainly lies in that______.A. it affects the human food chainB. people cannot consume dairy productsC. it is found in frozen meatD. meat is still safe to eat34. The underlined word ―they‖ in Part C means ________.A. diseaseB. infected animalsC. adult animalsD. 2-3 weeks35. Which of the following is not true according to the passage?A. Horses cannot contract the foot-and-mouth disease.B. The record that humans caught the disease was first kept in 1967.C. Frozen meat imported from other countries can carry the disease.D. Animals infected can be cured in 2-3 weeks.Passage TwoQuestion 36 to 40 based on the following passage. In bringing up children, every parent watches eagerly the child's acquisition (学会) of each new skill m the first spoken words, the first independent steps, or the beginning of reading and writing. It is often tempting to hurry the child beyond his natural learning rate, but this can set up dangerous feelings of failure and states of worry in the child. This might happen at any stage. A baby might be forced to use a toilet too early; a young child might be encouraged to learn to read before he knows the meaning of the words he reads. On the other hand, though, if a child is left alone too much, or without any learning opportunities, he loses his natural enthusiasm for life and his desire to find out new things for himself.Parents vary greatly in their degree of strictness towards their children. Some may be especially strict in money matters. Others are severe (严格的) over time of coming home at night or punctuality for meals. In general, the controls represent the needs of the parents and the values of the community as much as the child's own happiness. As regards the development of moral standards in the growing child, consistency is very important in parental teaching. To forbid a thing one day and excuse it the next is no foundation for morality (道德). Also, parents should realize that "example is better than precept". If they are not sincere and do not practice what they preach (说教), their children may grow confused when they grow old enough to think for themselves, and realize they have been to some extent fooled.A sudden awareness of a marked difference between their parents' principles and their morals can be a dangerous disappointment.36. Eagerly watching the child's acquisition of new skills, ___________.A. should be avoidedB. is universal among parentsC. sets up dangerous states of worry in the childD. will make the child lose interest in learning new things37. In the process of children's learning new skills, parents ________.A. should encourage them to read before they know the meaning of the words they readB. should expect a lot of the childrenC. should achieve a balance between pushing them too hard and leaving them on their ownD. should create as many learning opportunities as possible38. The second paragraph mainly tells us that ___________.A. parents should be strict with their childrenB. parental controls reflect only the values of the communityC. parental restrictions vary, and are not always for the benefit of the children aloneD. it's parents' and society's duty to control the children39. The word "precept" in Paragraph 3 probably means "___________".A. opinionB. punishmentC. behaviorD. instruction40. In terms of moral matters, parents should _________.A. follow the rules themselvesB. be aware of the huge difference between adults and childrenC. forbid their children to follow hook teachingsD. always ensure the security of their childrenPartⅢCloze (20*1= 20 points)Directions: There are 20 blanks in the following passage. 北京交通大学2013级2级起点第一学期期末口语考试题 Section A Read the following paragraph (21世纪)
1. He was driving home one evening, on a two-lane country road. Work, in this small Midwestern community, was almost as slow as his beat-up Pontiac, but he never quit looking. Ever since the factory closed, he’d been unemployed, and with winter raging on, the chill had finally hit home. It was a lonely road. Not many people had a reason to be on it, unless they were leaving. Most of his friends had already left. They had families to feed and dreams to fulfill, but he stayed on. After all, this was where he buried his mother and father. He was born here and knew the country. He could go down this road blind, and tell you what was on either side, and with his headlights not working, that came in handy.
2. Joe just smiled as he closed her trunk. She asked him how much she owed him. Any amount would have been all right with her. She had already imagined all the awful things that could have happened had he not stopped. Joe never thought twice about the money. This was not a job to him. This was helping someone in need, and God knows there were plenty who had given him a hand in the past. He had lived his whole life that way, and it never occurred to him to act any other way. He told her that if she really wanted to pay him back, the next time she saw someone who needed help, she could give that person the assistance that they needed, and Joe added “„ think of me”.
3. It began when their memories started to fade. Added to the frequent house-wide hunts for glasses and car keys were the groceries left behind on the counter, notices of bills left unpaid. Soon my parents couldn’t remember names of friends, then of their grandchildren. Finally they didn’t remember that they had grandchildren. Financial control was the next thing to go. For all of their marriage, my parents stubbornly kept separate accounts. Sharing being unthinkable, they’d devised financial arrangements so elaborate they could trigger war at any time. He, for example, was to pay for everything outside the house, she for whatever went on inside. The who pays dilemma was so complex for one trip that they finally gave up traveling entirely.
4. When I finally brought him home, we opened the front door to see my mother sitting on the sofa. As he stepped in the room, she rose with a cry. I stayed back as he slowly walked toward her and she toward him. As they approached each other on legs rickety with age, her hands fluttered over his face. “Oh, there you are,” she said. “There you are.”I don’t doubt that if my mother and father magically regained their old vigor, they’d be back fighting. But I now see that something came of all those years of shared days — days of sitting at the same table, waking to the same sun, working and raising children together. Even the very fury they lavished on each other was a brick in this unseen creation, a structure that reveals itself increasingly as the world around them falls apart.
5. Imagine yourself sitting in a classroom in ancient days listening to Plato or Aristotle speaking on deep philosophical issues such as ethics or morality. Now imagine yourself in one of your high school or current college classes listening to a professor read from a PowerPoint slide. Which education would you place more value on? Why? The reason educators such as Aristotle were regarded as such great teachers is that they taught wisdom. This is what is often missed in modern education. Many attend college because it is the normality upon completion of high school. It is almost as if college is regarded as the next step to a successful life, but is not given much thought. This is not how college ought to be viewed. A university’s very existence is to teach its students wisdom.
6. Yes, universities are also there to help us get a job, but not in the way most students probably think. As stated earlier, lots of students wish simply to obtain a degree so that they can have that piece of paper that will get them a job. This is not the intention of the university. College should not be treated as a place to obtain a certificate. Yes, a college diploma will open doors to jobs that you may not have otherwise been able to get. Still, a college diploma is not always the only thing an employer is looking for. Something even more valuable than a college diploma is a college education. If all we seek is a diploma, we will stroll through our courses halfheartedly and learn far less. If we seek a college education, we will engage in courses and seek wisdom that we did not have before. A college diploma will open a few doors for you. A college education will give you self-confidence in the job you actually do get.
