1. He was driving home one evening, on a two-lane country road. Work, in this small Midwestern community, was almost as slow as his beat-up Pontiac, but he never quit looking. Eve r since the factory closed, he’d been unemployed, and with winter raging on, the chill had finally hit home. It was a lonely road. Not many people had a reason to be on it, unless they were leaving. Most of his friends had already left. They had families to feed and dreams to fulfill, but he stayed on. After all, this was where he buried his mother and father. He was born here and knew the country. He could go down this road blind, and tell you what was on either side, and with his headlights not working, that came in handy.

2. Joe just smiled as he closed her trunk. She asked him how much she owed him. Any amount would have been all right with her. She had already imagined all the awful things that could have happened had he not stopped. Joe never thought twice about the money. This was not a job to him. This was helping someone in need, and God knows there were plenty who had given him a hand in the past. He had lived his whole life that way, and it never occurred to him to act any other way. He told her that if she really wanted to pay him back, the next time she saw someone who needed help, she could give that person the assistance that they needed, and Joe added “…think of me”.

3. It began when their memories started to fade. Added to the frequent house-wide hunts for glasses and car keys were the groceries left behind on the counter, notices of bills left unpaid. Soon my parents couldn’t remember names of friends, then of their grandchildren. Finally they didn’t remember that they had grandchildren. F inancial control was the next thing to go. For all of their marriage, my parents

stubbornly kept separate accounts. Sharing being unthinkable, they’d devised financial arrangements so elaborate they could trigger war at any time. He, for example, was to pay for everything outside the house, she for whatever went on inside. The who pays dilemma was so complex for one trip that they finally gave up traveling entirely.

4. When I finally brought him home, we opened the front door to see my mother sitting on the sofa. As he stepped in the room, she rose with a cry. I stayed back as

he slowly walked toward her and she toward him. As they approached each other on legs rickety with age, her hands fluttered over his face. “Oh, there you are,”she said. “There you are.”I don’t doubt that if my mother and father magically regained their old vigor, they’d be back fighting. But I now see that something came of all those years of shared days — days of sitting at the same table, waking to the same sun, working and raising children together. Even the very fury they lavished on each other

was a brick in this unseen creation, a structure that reveals itself increasingly as the world around them falls apart.

5.Imagine yourself sitting in a classroom in ancient days listening to Plato or Aristotle speaking on deep philosophical issues such as ethics or morality. Now imagine yourself in one of your high school or current college classes listening to a professor read from a PowerPoint slide. Which education would you place more value on? Why? The reason educators such as Aristotle were regarded as such great teachers is that they taught wisdom. This is what is often missed in modern education. Many attend college because it is the normality upon completion of high school. It is almost as if college is regarded as the next step to a successful life, but is not given much thought. This is not how college ought to be viewed. A university’s very existence is to teach its students wisdom.

6. Yes, universities are also there to help us get a job, but not in the way most students probably think. As stated earlier, lots of students wish simply to obtain a degree so that they can have that piece of paper that will get them a job. This is not the intention of the university. College should not be treated as a place to obtain a certificate. Yes, a college diploma will open doors to jobs that you may not have otherwise been able to get. Still, a college diploma is not always the only thing an employer is looking for. Something even more valuable than a college diploma is a college education. If all we seek is a diploma, we will stroll through our courses halfheartedly and learn far less. If we seek a college education, we will engage in courses and seek wisdom that we did not have before. A college diploma will open a few doors for you. A college education will give you self-confidence in the job you actually do get.

7.What I heard was the rhythmic music of it all, and the stories became easy to recite.

I would carefully examine the color illustrations in the old falling-apart-at-the-seams book. Most of all, I would soak up all the attention I got during those reading times when closeness, imagination, curiosity and love of learning were forged. Books cost money and money was scarce in those Depression days in the 1930s and 1940s. The one small bookcase in the hallway of our home contained some worn copies of fairy tales, a few volumes of classic authors, like Charles Dickens and Oscar Wilde, and an encyclopedia. The single encyclopedia volume our family had went from A to B.

8.When I go to bookstores these days, I get overwhelmed. There’s so much competition for a kid’s attention. I don’t necessarily mean between authors and publishers. I worry that TV, DVDs, videos, CDs, cell phones and other machinery will replace the intimate quiet family activities that foster closeness and imagination.I was happy to see the eagerness on all the children’s faces. I talked to them about

the weather and about planting flowers and about looking around to see things that they might not have noticed before. I talked to them about stories and writing. And then I read to them.The kids asked intelligent questions. They were bright and cheerful and full of ideas. They had even written stories of their own, illustrated with

their own drawings. They loved the human contact, the interaction between us.

9.The automobile ultimately shuttled in an era when teenagers could go on dates far from watchful chaperones. And the computer, along with the Internet, has given even very young children virtual lives distinctly separate from those of their parents and siblings.Business analysts and other researchers expect the popularity of the cellphone —along with the mobility and intimacy it affords — to further exploit and accelerate these trends. By 2010, 81 percent of Americans aged 5 to 24 will own a cellphone, up from 53 percent in 2005, according to IDC, a research company in Framingham,Mass., that tracks technology and consumer research.

10. Marketers and cellphone makers are only too happy to fill the newest generation gap. Last fall, Firefly Mobile introduced the glow Phone for the preschool set; it has a small keypad with two speed-dial buttons depicting an image of a mother and a father. AT&T promotes its wireless service with television commercials poking fun at a mom who doesn’t understand her daughter’s cellphone vernacular. Cellphones, instant messaging, e-mail and the like have encouraged younger users to create their own inventive, quirky and very private written language. That has given them the opportunity to essentially hide in plain sight. They are more connected than

ever, but also far more independent.

胜利油田目前有9000多人在作物资供应管理,庞大的体系给采购管理造成了许多困难。胜利每年采购资金的85个亿中,有45个亿的产品由与胜利油田有各种隶属和姻亲关系的工厂生产,很难将其产品的质量和市场同类产品比较,而且价格一般要比市场价高。例如供电器这一产品,价格比市场价贵20%,但由于这是一家由胜利油田长期养活的残疾人福利工厂,只能是本着人道主义精神接受他们的供货,强烈的社会责任感让企业背上了沉重的包袱。同样,胜利油田使用的大多数涂料也是由下属工厂生产,一般只能使用3年左右,而市面上一般的同类型涂料可以用10年。还有上级单位指定的产品,只要符合油田使用标准、价格差不多,就必须购买指定产品。 胜利油田的现象说明,封闭的体制是中国国有企业更新采购理念的严重阻碍。中国的大多数企业,尤其是国有企业采购管理薄弱,计划经济、短缺经济下粗放的采购管理模式依然具有强大的惯性。采购环节漏洞带来的阻力难以消除。 统计数据显示,在目前中国工业企业的产品销售成本中,采购成本占到60%左右,可见,采购环节管理水平的高低对企业的成本和效益影响非常大。一些企业采购行为在表面上认可和接纳了现代的模式,但在封闭的市场竞争中,在操作中没有质的改变。一些采购只是利用了物流的技术与形式,但经常是为库存而采购,而大量库存实质上是企业或部门之间没有实现无缝连接的结果,库存积压的又是企业最宝贵的流动资金。这一系列的连锁反应正是造成许多企业资金紧张、效益低下的局面没有本质改观的主要原因。 (二)海尔 海尔采取的采购策略是利用全球化网络,集中购买。以规模优势降低采购成本,同时精简供应商队伍。据统计,海尔的全球供应商数量由原先
