There was a very naughty boy in the nursery and a teacher who was generally very confident with the
children was asked to take charge of him. One day the boy joined a session in the room next to mine. His
appearance created an atmosphere of tension. He spent the entire session running around, hitting and kicking, and
destroying property.
I was in the craft room working with some other children when my co-worker told me that this boy’s teacher
was in tears, and could not get control of the situation. As we were talking, the boy ran in. I told my co-worker
that I would take care of him.
I closed the door. He was full of energy, throwing things around and making a huge mess. But I could see
that he was doing all these to annoy me. He needed connection, and this was the only way he knew how to ask for
it. So I sat back down and kept quiet. Then he slowed down and began making a rocket. I talked to him about it.
We continued like this for a few minutes before I slipped into the conversation:
―So what happened today?‖
It was purely a question, no blame or anger in my tone. I believe that if I had criticized him, the gate that was
slowly opening would have shut firmly closed. He told me that the teacher didn’t let him do what he knew well
due to safety but asked him to do what he disliked. He also admitted that he had enjoyed making her run around
and saw it as a game. I explained that his teacher had not seen it as a game and was very upset. This again was
stated simply as a fact. I suggested that next time he had a session, he talk about what he hoped to do at the start,
which might be easier for everyone. He agreed and was quiet for a moment. Then he looked at me with tears in his
eyes before quietly asking if he could go to find his teacher to apologize.

He told me that the teacher didn’t let him do what he knew well
due to safety but asked him to do what he disliked.
But I could see that he was doing all these to annoy me. He
needed connection, and this was the only way he knew how to ask for it. So I sat back down and kept quiet. Then
he slowed down and began making a rocket. 故A正确。
It was purely a question, no blame or anger in my tone. I believe that
if I had criticized him, the gate that was slowly opening would have shut firmly closed如果我批评他,那么他对我打开的那扇门就又要关闭上了。
Then he looked at me with tears in his eyes before quietly asking if
he could go to find his teacher to apologize.
1. Coming up against their behavior could only make the job harder and their behavior more
extreme. I found something that worked, though.【翻译】违反他们行为的做法只会让这份工作更困难,让他们的行为更极端。 Coming up against
their behavior在句中充当主语,make the job harder中的形容词harder是形容词在句中充当宾语补足语。
2. I believe that if I had criticized him, the gate that was slowly opening would have shut firmly closed.【翻译】我认为如果我之前批评他,刚刚慢慢打开的门会坚定地被关上。【分析】本句中的动词believe后面是一个that引导的宾语从句that if I had criticized him, the gate that was slowly opening would have shut firmly closed。 if I had criticized him这是宾语从句中的一个条件句。

B
In the mid-1950s, I was a somewhat bored early-adolescent male student who believed that doing any more than
necessary was wasted effort. One day, this approach threw me into embarrassment
In Mrs. Totten’s eighth-grade math class at Central Avenue School in Anderson, Indiana, we were learning to add
and subtract decimals (小数).
Our teacher typically assigned daily homework, which would be recited in class the following day. On most days,
our grades were based on our oral answer to homework questions.
Mrs. Totten usually walked up and down the rows of desks requesting answers from student after student in the
order the questions had appeared on our homework sheets. She would start either at the front or the back of the
classroom and walk toward the other end.
Since I was seated near the middle of about 35 students, it was easy to figure out which questions I might have to
answer. This particular time, I had completed my usual two or three problems according to my calculations.
What I failed to expect was that several students were absent, which threw off my estimate. As Mrs. Totten made
her way from the beginning of the class,I desperately tried to determine which math problem I would get. I tried
to work it out before she got to me, but I had brain freeze and couldn’t function.
When Mrs. Totten reached my desk, she asked what answer I’d got for problem No. 14. ―I…I didn’t get
anything,‖ I answered,and my face felt warm.
―Correct,‖ she said.
It turned out that the correct answer was zero.
What did I learn that day? First, always do all your homework. Second, in real life it isn’t always what you say but
how you say it that matters. Third,I would never make it as a mathematician.
If I could choose one school day that taught me the most, it would be that one.
