Answer the following questions with the information from the passage.PASSAGE 1It is hard to get any agreement on the precise meaning of the term“social class”. Ineveryday life, people tend to have a different approach to those they consider higher or lower than themselves in the social scale. Dress, way of speaking, area of residence in a given city or province, education and manners all play a part.In Greece, after the sixth-century B.C., there was a growing conflict between the peasants and the landed aristocrats, and a gradual decrease in the power of the aristocracy when a kind of “middle class”of traders and skilled workers grew up. The population of Athens, for example, was divided into three main classes which were politically and legally distinct. About one-third of the total were slaves, who did not count politically at all. The next main group consisted of resident foreigners, the“metics”, who were freemen, though they too were allowed no share in political life. The third group was the powerful body of “citizens”, who were themselves divided into subclasses. In the later Middle Ages, however, the development of a money economy and the growth of cities and trade led to the rise of another class, the“burghers”or city merchants and mayors. These were the predecessors of the modern middle class. This change affected the towns more than the country areas, where remnants of feudalism lasted much longer.1. List at least three common criteria for telling a person’s social position.2. Slaves in Greece in the sixth century B.C. were not ______ significant.3. The metics, one of the three classes of Greece, consisted mainly of ________.4. What did the development of a money economy and the growth of trade lead to?PASSAGE 2Electronic books could revolutionize reading, but people ought to consider their far-reaching impacts as well. “The e-book promises to wreak a slow havoc on life as we know it,”Jason Ohler, professor of technology assessment, university of Alaska Southeast In Juneau, warned the World Future Society, Bethesda, Md. His assessment weighed the pros and cons (赞成和反对的理由) of e-book technology’s impact on social relationships, the environment, the economy, etc. Before you curl up(蜷曲)with an e-book, consider the disadvantages. They increase eyestrain due to poor screen resolution, replace a relatively cheap commodity with a more expensive one, and displace workers in print book production and traditional publishing. E-books make it easy to share data, thereby threatening copyright agreements and reducing compensation of authors, as well as creating nonbiodegradable(不可生物降解)trash. On the other hand, e-books save paper and trees, reduce the burden of the carrying and storing of printed books, promote self-sufficiency in learning, and make reading a collaborative experience online. They also create new jobs for writers and artists and encourage self-publishing.In final analysis, Ohler points out, e-books should gain society’s approval if a few conditions are met: make them biodegradable and recyclable, solve the problem of eye fatigue, be sure the “have-nots”get the technology, and support e-book training in schools and business.1. What is the author’s purpose of writing the passage?A. To draw people’s attention to the disadvantages of e-booksB. To call on people to reject E-booksC. To criticize schools and business that don’t provide e-booksD. To encourage people to use e-books2. What is Jason Ohler’s attitude towards e-books?A. PositiveB. IndifferentC. CautiousD. Suspicious3. In what sense do e-books exert a negative impact on the environment?A. They are unable to be broken down into harmless products.B. They consume a lot of natural resources.C. They produce harmful gases.D. They are capable of being reused.4. What is e-books’ negative impact on social relationships?A. They create new jobs only for writers.B. Fewer and fewer people have access to new technology.C. They may threaten some traditional trades.D. They isolate people from one another.5. What does Ohler suggest regarding the use of e-books?A. The society should ensure the poor have access to the technology.B. The society should ban the use of e-books if they cannot reduce eye fatigue.C. The society should approve of the use of e-books if they are made recyclable.D. The schools should solve the present problems of e-books.PASSAGE 3When they marry, husbands and wives have well-developed health histories and well-established congenital (天生的) and developmental propensities(嗜好)toward good and ill health. Substantial research suggests that, given the existing health propensity and health condition of an individual at a particular time, his or her probability of better or worse future health is affected by a variety of socially mediated factors that are subject to influence or manipulation by his or her spouse.Spouses can promote each other’s health by ameliorating (改善)psychological stress. A substantial literature develops strong evidence that psychological stress causes illness, increases mortality risk, and serves as an important mechanism that links socioeconomic characteristics to health and mortality. Stress-reducing mechanisms include removal of sources of stress, and management of stress by talking about it to a trusted other person, psychiatric treatment, physical exercise, recreation and other means. A spouse can provide or encourage all of these stress-reducing behaviors.Spouses also can promote each other’s health by providing eac h other with supportive social contact, and they can facilitate or inhibit each other’s social contact with supportive others. Evidence suggests that health is greatly advanced by supportive social contacts, including positive interaction with relatives, friends, coworkers and acquaintances. Recent experimental data shows that persons with more diverse social networks are more resistant to experimentally introduced upper respiratory (呼吸的)viruses than persons with less diverse social networks.Spouses can also promote each other’s health by providing each other with money income, and they can help each other manage money income effectively. Money does not buy health directly, but it can be used to purchase goods and services that make good health more likely. These goods and services include nutritious food, a hygienic and safe environment, medical care, and amenities that reduce psychological stress. Unless estranged or unusually wealthy, husbands and wives almost always share their financial resources and purchases and consume many of these health-promoting goods and services jointly. In short, there are many ways in which spouses can influence each other’s probability of good health.1. What is the passage mainly about?A. How can spouses promote each other’s health.B. The spouse’s probability of future healthC. Effects of spouse’s employment and hours of work on each other’s health.D. Spouses influence each other in various ways.2. According to the author, what is the most effective way for the husband to reduce psychological stress?A. to talk to other person.B. to go to see psychiatrist.C. to enjoy.D. to talk with his wife.3. Which one is the suitable summary of paragraph 1?A. Spouse’s influence is of vital importance to each other’s health.B. Spouse’s influence has nothing to do with health.C. Healthy spouses will remain health after their marriage.D. There are a variety of socially mediated factors.4. How can money make good health?A. Money can buy health directly.B. Spouses can manage money income effectively.C. Money can provide spouses with goods and services, which is likely to make good health.D. Husbands and wives share everything.5. Which of the following is likely to make spouses in ill health?A. Positive interaction with relatives.B. Appropriate physical exercise.C. Few social networks.D. Nutritious food.IV. For the first 7 questions in each passage, choose the best answer from the four choices marked A, B, C and D. For the remaining 3 questions in the same passage, complete the sentences with the information given in the passage.Questions 1 to 10 are based on the same passage or dialog. Are You Reading as Many Books as You Would Like?Do you read as much as you'd like, or as many as you'd like of the books you're interested in? Are you aware that the time spent on today's reading prevents you from reading something else? Life is one of choices?make sure your choices take you in the direction you wish to go.My biggest recommendation (建议) to increase your reading rate is to attend a rapid reading course (sometimes called speed reading), but the single most important element is the on-going practice. If you want to try a few techniques on your own, here are a few key pointers, but you really need to attend a course to bepushed to significantly higher levels of competency, because only an external person can push you past the comfort zone of your eyes, your brain, and your current beliefs about your abilities. Some Rapid-reading Keys:Read with purpose. Don't read things you won't remember, and don't waste time reading things that won't further you in any way. However, many people read mindlessly, just because it's there! You should start with the end in mind.Have an expectation of success. See yourself reading at great speed.Fill your mind with a positive expectation of great deeds. Feel and imagine the power of the rapid flow of information into your mind. And hear the rapid flow of words just pouring into your brain.Preview and review the book. You can do it by scanning contents andother information at the front, as well as the back. Sit upright andhold the book at a comfortable position. Have good overhead light, fresh air, plenty of water, and a comfortable temperature.Use a visual guide. You may usually use your finger, or sometimes two fingers, which depends on the size of the print. This is where the training by an instructor is really useful (they won't let you get away with bad habits, and they push you beyond your comfort level). One ofthe key elements of rapid reading is to use our finger at a very fast rate, running it down the page. We don't need to read every word inorder to comprehend (理解) and keep the information. All weneed is a large amount of text, and the sense is gathered at lightening speed.Speed training. Go as fast as your hand can turn the pages, and don't worry that there seems to be practically no comprehension at this stage. The key is to extend the eye's capacity to absorb, and to strengthenyour mind's belief that it can be done. Two hands are needed. With one hand run a finger down the page as fast as you can. At first you'll notice an occasional word or phrase will jump out at you, but not much else. That's fine—comprehension is not the goal at this stage. With the other hand, turn the pages as fast as you can go.Set a daily target for yourself—it might be to race through a thick book that you're interested to read. It might be to practice for a specified amount of time.Practice, practice, and practice. Magazines and newspapers are great to practice on. The columns (栏目) are thin, which helps you go even faster.Comprehension. You may think you're not absorbing much, but try this test. Choose a book you want to read. The passage is followed by some questions. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice. Many historians of the twentieth century look back at the fifteenth century and say, “Machiavelli was the first political scientist in history.” They say that he looked at politics for the first time with the factual eye of a scientist. He was only interested in the facts. He thought that politics and morality didn’t go together very often, but he studied ideas of right and wrong, alongwith politics; government leaders, he wrote, could use these ideas to get and keep power. In Machiavelli’s opinion, the nature of human beings is usually evil, so a good person must always fail. He thought it was important for a political leader to know how to be bad. In fact, Machiavelli saw leaders of government as people above ordinary human beings; so he believed, they are also above ordinary morality. Good and evil, he said, are only ideas that weak people use to excuse weakness; powerful people use these ideas to keep other people weak. They can lead because they want power and because they fight for it. Also, these leaders are not usually afraid to leave morality behind, so they don’t have ideas of right or wrong to stop them. They think only of power. It is nice, Machiavelli said, if political leaders can also be good people, but they must know how to be bad when the time comes.Machiavelli said that it is natural to fight for power and that there are two methods people use: law and physical force. The first method is the way of human beings, and the second method is the way of animals. Great political leaders very often use the way of animals, but they usually pretend to use the way of good human beings. They do this to get and keep power.People are evil, in Machiavelli’s opinion, so war and fighting are always in the world; they are a natural part of it. Political leaders know the way of nature, of people, and animals, and they use their knowledge to get what they want.46. According to the passage, a political scientist is a person who ____________.A) studies politics and science at the same timeB) studies in a political wayC) knows politics as well as scienceD) studies politics in a scientific way47. It can be inferred from the passage that ____________.A) Machiavelli studied politics and ideas of right and wrongB) Morality and politics went together very oftenC) Machiavelli was interested in facts and opinionsD) Machiavelli looked at science with the eye of a politician48. According to the passage, in the opinion of Machiavelli, ____________.A) political leaders are special human beings and have different morality.B) human beings are usually bad and are certain to failC) powerful people use ideas of right and wrong to control themselvesD) it is important for a political leader to know the nature of humans49. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage? ____________.A) Powerful people use ideas of good and evil to control weak peopleB) Weak people use ideas of good and evil to excuse weaknessC) Powerful people are afraid to desert moralityD) Powerful people should know how to be bad50. It is implied in the passage that ____________.A) Political leaders know how to get what they desire as animals doB) wars are likely to occur so long as evil leaders existC) political leaders often use physical force to fight for powerD) political leaders pretend to be bad to keep other people weak。

I disagree. I think that while this can happen for some folks, in certain stages of their life, it’s not always the case, which is why many of us today lack a fulfilling social life. If you’re in college where you get to hang around lots of other people and you’re naturally a social person, your social circle will develop on its own. But if you’re an accountant working in cubicle all day and you’re kind of shy and don’t go out much, your social life may be seriously deficient.B) In my view, building a social life requires the same active and strategic approach that making money or building a career requires. The approach is based on setting goals and acting on them. Coming from this angle, I want to show you some proactive (积极主动的) strategies to build a social life.C) A fulfilling social life looks differently for different people. Some of us need lots of friends and a large social circle. Some of us are more fond of having just a few friends, but who are very close to us. And some prefer a mix of the two. What is your preference Do you know Take some time to think about this and visualize what your ideal social circle would look like.D) Another aspect to think about is what kind of people you want in your social circle. Do you prefer people who are artistic, or people who are tech-oriented People who are outdoorsy or prefer to be indoors Usually, you will get along best with individuals who are similar to you. So I advise you to consider your dominant traits and consciously decide which of these traits are important for you to find in others. If you know what kind of people you want in your life, you’re much more likely to find them.E) Once you know how many and what kind of friends you’re looking for, it’s time to take action in order to meet them. This may seem obvious, but it’s something many of us ignore: If you just wait for others to come to you, you’ll never build a social circle. You must have the initiative and go to them.F) My recommendation here is to think about ac tivities where you are likely to meet people you’d enjoy interacting with, and get involved in a few of them. For instance, you may take a class on a topic you’re interested in. You may volunteer for a charity organization or join some sort of club. Even i f you don’t have any friends whatsoever at this point, you can apply this strategy. You can get involved in such activities all by yourself, and you’ll meet others there.G) In using this strategy, the Internet is your friend. You can discover all sorts of classes, social events, clubs and organizations near you online. But keep in mind that this is only the first step. Then you need to actually get out of the house, go there and participate.H) So you attend a training program on, let’s say, urban photography. There are lots of other people there. What do you do In general, the passive approach tends to prevail. Many of us just sit around doing nothing and expect others to come talk to us, ask us questions, and be chatty. And this may happen, or it may not. O ne thing I’m certain of, though, is that it’s not the best approach. You want to be friendly first. Be the one to break the ice.I) Walk up to other people and introduce yourself to them. Then start chatting with them. For example, ask them how they found o ut about the event, how long they’ve been interested in urban photography, change from there into other topics, and if they seem to enjoy talking to you (which they almost always will), keep the conversation going. Doing this may not be easy at first, espe cially if you’re not used to being this outgoing, but it’s something you get used to with practice. The trick is not to let hesitancy prevent you from being social. And I can tell from experience that if you are social and friendly with new people first, t hey’ll love you for it.J) If you’re building a new social life from scratch, the beginning is always the hardest part. However, once you’ve met a few people, it gets a lot easier because you can then make use of them to meet even more people. You can then meet some of their friends and acquaintances, and expand your social circle further.K) Again, a proactive approach works miracles. Let your friends know that you’re interested in meeting new people and you’d love to be introduced to other people they know.If they indeed are your friends, they’ll love to help you out. They may inviteyou to come with them to parties they go to, they may call other people to join you when you go out, and they’ll introduce you to new people. But you have to let them know their help is desired.L) The best part is that the bigger your social circle becomes, the easier it is to employ this strategy. Your social life will expand faster and faster, and you’ll find it progressively easier to find people you match well with.M) Your social life is completely in your hands. You can have a social life as rich, connected and diverse as you want. All you need is to do a bit of smart planning in this area, and take massive action. There is certainly no shortage of possibilities to meet peo ple and make friends. It’s up to you to capitalize on them. Good luck!1)You will meet some people you would like to interact with when you take part in some activities. F2)People’s ideas of a satisfying social life vary from person to person. C3)You can enlarge your social circle by taking advantage of your current friends. M6)The common thing between building a social life and building a career is that they both require using some methods and strategies actively. The Spanish brought the potato back to Europe with them. But people in Europe did not like this strange vegetable. Some people thought that if you ate potatoes, your skin would look like the skin of a potato. Other people could not believe that you ate the underground part of the plant, so they ate the leaves instead. This made them sick because there is poison in the leaves. For example, 41) depending on which dictionary you used and which color you gave, a young man’s roses could42) convey different meanings, “I love you,” “love is dangerous,” or even, “my love has decreased.” The 43) notion of using flowers to send messages had fallen out of 44) fashion by the 1880s. Afterwards, sending love letters, a 45) (more direct) way to express love commenced. Today, flowers are still considered a lovely gift, but the meaning for each kind of flowers has been lost.26)A. averageB. popularC. familiarD. standard27)A. UsuallyB. MostlyC. ChieflyD. Unit 4 Money TalksSection 1 Lead-inActivity 1 How do banks work?1. Do you know how banks make money? First have a discussion with your partners and describe briefly about the way banks make money. The following are some possibly involved words.deposit 存款savings account储蓄帐户interest rate利息率loan贷款margin / difference 差额2. Now listen carefully and do the compound dictation. This is financial adviser Patrick Munro talking about, “How do banks work?” Banks are designed as community service organizations; however they are private businesses and they’re designed to make a profit. What banks do is they take in what’s called deposits. In other words when you have a paycheck and take it to the bank for safety purposes, you can deposit that money with the bank. The bank will pay you an interest rate, lower on a savings account, even lower on a checking account. But they have now got the deposit in their portfolio (投资组合).What they will then do is turn around and lend money out at a higher interest rate through things such as mortgages (抵押), credit cards, car loans and various other financial instruments that are debt related. Banks work on what's called a margin. So what they pay you, for instance two percent on your cash accounts, and lend out and auto loan at seven percent, the bank will make the difference, which is five percent. So banks can become very profitable in a short period of time. This is Patrick Munro talking about how do banks work.Activity 2Share your favorite money quotes and use examples or personal experience to support your choice.Example1. Money is the root of all evil.2. Look after the pennies and the pounds will look after themselves.3. Whoever said money can’t buy happiness didn’t know where to go shopping.Suggested answer:1. Money is the root of all evil.→Money is behind the crimes & wrong-doings in the world, for example, bank robberies and murders with a financial motive2.Look after the pennies and the pounds will look after themselves.→taking care of your spending & saving moneyIf you are careful about small details, e.g.small amounts of money, the larger amounts of money will not need much attention (they will look after themselves)3. Whoever said money can’t buy happiness didn’t know where to go shopping.→If you know where to go shopping, you can, in fact, buy happiness. You have to search for the right place. But it seems that many people do not know where this is. Activity 3 Bank credit ratingDo the quiz on P50 to find whether you are a good customer to banks.Mostly (a)s: Medium You’ve probably never been inside a bank in your life, but sooner or later you’ll have to – and they’ll be looking to try and make you change your lifestyle. A word of advice, though, don’t believe everything they tell you!Mostly (b)s: Low You’re a cautious customer, but you’re a practical person too. The banks won’t make a lot of money out of you!Mostly (c)s: High You’re just the sort of customer the banks are looking for. They like people who spend money without thinking about the consequences! You are welcomed to use their credit card. Activity 4 Introduction of credit cardsListen to a recording & complete the summary.A credit card allows you to 1) charge something immediately and then pay for the bill for at a 2) later date. Once a credit card has been issued, you can make purchases within the prescribed credit 3) limit . A credit card with a limit of $100.00 enables you to pay for up to 4) $100.00 worth of items. Otherwise, you have to pay 7) interest or a 8) finance charge. ScriptCredit cards are an important part of American life. Whether we have a positive or negative image of credit cards, they are an inescapable part of our finances, either now or in the future.A credit card can be used to "charge" things like clothes, tapes or CDs, dinner at a restaurant, or maybe a hotel room while you're on vacation. When you charge something, you are agreeing now and paying for it later.Credit cards come with a "limit". Let's say your credit card has a limit of $100.00. That means you charge up to $100.00 worth of items on your card. You will get a statement in the mail each month that lists the charges you have made. You will also have to make a payment that you have a balance owing. When you charge something on a credit card, you not only will have to pay for what you bought, but you will also have to pay interest, or a finance charge, if you don't pay your bill in full by the due date. The finance charge is your extra cost for having something now and paying for it later. The interest rate on a credit card can be 15% or even higher. If, however, you pay your bill in full every month by the due date, you do not have to pay interest.Activity 5 Views on credit cardsWatch a video clip and discuss the questions in groups.1.What are the advantages of having a credit card?2. What is your preference? Do you know? Take some time to think about this and visualize what your ideal social circle would look like.D) Another aspect to think about is what kind of people you want in your social circle. Do you prefer people who are artistic, or people who are tech-oriented? People who are outdoorsy or prefer to be indoors? Usually, you will get along best with individuals who are similar to you. So I advise you to consider your dominant traits and consciously decide which of these traits are important for you tofind in others. If you know what kind of people you want in your life, you’re much more likely to find them.E) Once you know how many and what kind of friends you’re looking for, it’s time to take action in order to meet them. This m ay seem obvious, but it’s something many of us ignore: If you just wait for others to come to you, you’ll never build a social circle. You must have the initiative and go to them.F) My recommendation here is to think about activities where you are likely to meet people you’d enjoy interacting with, and get involved in a few of them. For instance, you may take a class on a topic you’re interested in. You may volunteer for a charity organization or join some sort of club. Even if you don’t have any friends whatsoever at this point, you can apply this strategy. What do you do? In general, the passive approach tends to prevail. Many of us just sit around doing nothing and expect others to come talk to us, ask us questions, and be chatty. And this may happen, or it may not. One thing I’m certain of, though, is that it’s not the best approach. You want to be friendly first. Be the one to break the ice.I) Walk up to other people and introduce yourself to them. Then start chatting with them. For example, ask them how they found out about the event, ho w long they’ve been interested in urban photography, change from there into other topics, and if they seem to enjoy talking to you (which they almost always will), keep the conversation going. Doing this may not be easy at first, especially if you’re notu sed to being this outgoing, but it’s something you get used to with practice. The trick is not to let hesitancy prevent you from being social. And I can tell from experience that if you are social and friendly with new people first, they’ll love you for it.J) If you’re building a new social life from scratch, the beginning is always the hardest part. However, once you’ve met a few people, it gets a lot easier because you can then make use of them to meet even more people. You can then meet some of their friends and acquaintances, and expand your social circle further.K) Again, a proactive approach works miracles. Let your friends know that you’re interested in meeting new people and you’d love to be introduced to other people they know. If they indeed are your friends, they’ll love to help you out. They may invite you to come with them to parties they go to, they may call other people to join you when you go out, and they’ll introduce you to new people. There is certainly no shortage of possibilities to meet people and make fr iends. It’s up to you to capitalize on them. Good luck!1)You will meet some people you would like to interact with when you take part in some activities. F2)People’s ideas of a satisfying social life vary from person to person. C3)You can enlarge your social circle by taking advantage of your current friends. J4)Nowadays many people lack a happy and satisfying social life because their social life doesn’t always develop naturally as they think. A5)You have complete control over your social life and you can have a fulfilling one by making plans and taking actions. M6)The common thing between building a social life and building a career is that they both require using some methods and strategies actively. B7)It’s not easy to be outgoing and sociable among the people you don’t know, but you’ll be used to it with practice. I8)It will be helpful in building your ideal social circle if you know your major characteristics and personality. D9)Many people often ignore that they should go to find friends actively and not simply wait for others to come to them. E10)Suppose you participate in a training program, you are advised to be friendly and break the silence first. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C, and D. Choose the best answer to each question. When the telephone rings late at night, most women guess it must be one of only four or five people calling. A sister? Maybe. An emergency? Possibly. A mother? Probably not at that time of night. Much more likely it is a close female friend—someone calling to tell you that she has split up with her boyfriend again or perhaps simply that a good movie has just started on TV.At a time when families are spread far and wide and marriages often end in divorce, friendships of intimacy and trust are becoming more and more important. Erika, a 32-year-old lawyer, is strengthened by her ten-year friendship with her married friend Jane. “I was very sick one night, and so I called Jane at about 3:00a.m. to talk about it,” she says. “She was very supportive and even came over to take me to the doctor’s the next morning.”As American TV shows like Friends, which follows the lives of a very close group of young friends, have become very popular, many of us are beginning to see the value of such friendships. TV shows like this tell us that our romantic relationships may not last, but we need to keep in touch with our close friends if we want to survive. Also, a TV show called Real Women is about the lives and relationships of five former school friends. In this show, family, husbands, and work are all less important than friendships. Friendship is about commitment and loyalty. This is true of Erika and Jane’s friendship. With Erica’s family 200 miles away, it is Jane who keep s a spare set of keys to Erika’s apartment and waters her plants whenever she is away. “Having Jane around gives me a certain amount of freedom. It is not the kind of thing that you could ask anyone to do, but she knows I would do the same for her.” Jane, who may move to a different city soon, is worried about leaving such a support system of friends. “My friends have more to do with my life than my parents and, therefore, I don’t have to spend a lot of time explaining things to them. Potatoes are very popular today. They are the fourth most important crop in the world, after wheat, rice, and corn. But in the past, potatoes were not always popular. People in Europe started to eat them only 200 years ago!In the 1500s, the Spanish went to South America to look for gold. There, they found people eating potatoes for 7000 years! Others grew potatoes for their flowers. At one time in France, potato flowers were one of the most expensive flowers.Around 1780, the people of Ireland started to eat potatoes. They found that potatoes had many advantages. The potato grew on poor land, and it grew well in their cold and rainy climate. It gave more food than any other plant, and it needed little work. All they had to do was to plant the potatoes, and then they could do other work on the farm. On a small piece of land, a farmer could grow enough potatoes to feed his family. A person could eat eight to ten pounds of potatoes a day, with some milk or cheese, and be very healthy. Soon, potatoes became the main food in Ireland. In 1845, a disease killed all the potatoes in Ireland. Two million people died of hunger. Many Irish who did not die came to the United States at this time.In other parts of Europe, people did not want to change their old food habits. I can’t believe you did that. I really liked you,” she sobbed. But in the final show, the woman he eventually chose decided she didn’t want to marry him after all. “I think you’ve chosen me because you have to choose someone,” she said. Maybe this was because she already knew he had fallen in love with the show’s host! After leaving the show, Gerrard-Wright and the show’s host Jonsson tied the knot in Sweden. This idea of sending gifts of love with 32) concealed meanings quickly spread to Germany, France, and England. 33) Unfortunately , over time, only sending flowers remained popular.A 34) bunch of flowers told young ladies about the feelings in the hearts of young men. Each 35) cute flower had a different meaning. For example, pink flowers 36) (confessed) the feeling, “My love for you is strong and great.” The flowers from an orange tree meant, “You’re beautiful and pure.” Yellow roses, 37) on the other hand , meant, “I saw you with someone else.” Many flower dictionaries were made to help young people in love 38) (clarify) the meaning of the flowers they received. Not all of the dictionaries agreed 39) on the definite meaning of each flower, though, so a person had to be 40) cautious about what flowers they chose to send. For example, 41) depending on which dictionary you used and which color you gave, a young man’s roses could42) convey different meanings, “I love you,” “love is dangerous,” or even, “my love has decreased.” The43) notion of using flowers to send messages had fallen out of 44) fashion by the 1880s. Culture shock is the effect that involvement in a strange culture has on the unprepared visitor. Culture shock is what happens when a traveler suddenly finds himself in a place where yes may mean no, where a "fixed price" is negotiable, where to be kept waiting in an outer office is no cause for insult, where laughter may signify (意味) anger. The culture shock phenomenon causes a breakdown in communication, a misreading of reality, an inability to cope. Yet culture shock is relatively mild in comparison with the much more serious malady (弊病), future shock. Future shock is brought on by the premature arrival of the future. It may well be the most important disease of tomorrow.Take an individual out of his own culture and set him down suddenly in anenvironment sharply different from his own, with a different set of cues to react to—different conceptions (概念) of time, space, work, love, religion, sex, and everything else, then the dislocation he suffers will be severe. Given few clues as to what kind of behavior is rational under the radically new circumstances, the victim may well become a danger to himself and others. Now imagine not merely an individual but an entire society, an entire generation—including its weakest, least intelligent, and most irrational members—suddenly transported into this new world. The result is mass disorientation (迷失方向), future shock on a grand scale. This is the prospect that man now faces. Change is avalanching (把……淹没) upon our heads and most people are unprepared to cope with it.1.Culture shock occurs when ________.A. one loses all hopes of returning to his home environmentB. one expresses ideas and emotions contrary to what he intends toexpressC. one cannot make accurate judgment using one's own value standardsD. one cannot conduct negotiations for goods of fixed prices2.Future shock is much more serious than culture shock as ________.A. it concerns the problems of the futureB. it affects people on a grand scaleC. it causes personal insultsD. it destroys the foundation of the society3.The word "cue" in Para. 3 most probably refers to something that________.A. puzzles an individualB. disturbs an individual's normal way of lifeC. helps an individual to function in societyD. arouses an individual's interest in the new culture4.One effective way to prevent future shock is to ________.A. get people prepared for future changeB. keep people informed of foreign culturesC. have people resist possible future changeD. acquaint people with the harm of future change5.It can be inferred that the author's tone in the passage is ________.A. humorousB. exaggeratedC. radicalD. seriousQuestions 6 to 10 are based on the following passage.Silence is unnatural to man. He begins life with a cry and ends it in stillness. In the interval he does all he can to make a noise in the world, and there are few things of which he stands in more fear than of the absence of noise. Even his conversation is in great measure a desperate attempt to prevent a dreadful (可怕的) silence. He knows that ninety-nine percent of human conversation means no more than the buzzing (发出嗡嗡声) of a fly, but he longs to join the buzz and to prove that he is a man and not a waxwork figure. The object of conversation is not, for the most part, to communicate ideas. It is to keep up the buzzing sound. There are, it must be admitted, different qualities of buzz: there is even a buzz that is as exasperating (使人恼怒的) as the continuous ping (砰声) of a mosquito. But at a dinner party one would rather be a mosquito than a mute (哑巴). Most buzzing, fortunately, is agreeable to the ear, and some of it is agreeable even to the mind. He would be a foolish man, however, who waited until he had a wise thought to take part in the buzzing with his neighbors. Those who despise (看不起) the weather as a conversational opening seem to me to be ignorant of the reason why human beings wish to talk. Very few human beings join in a conversation in the hope of learning anything new. Some of them are content if they are merely allowed to go on making a noise into other people's ears, though they have nothing to tell them except that they have seen two or three new plays or that they have had food in a Swiss hotel. At the end of an evening during which they have said nothing at immense length, they are proud of themselves on their success as conversationalists.6.The significance of man's speaking ability is that ________.A. it proves his existence as a manB. it raises his position as a manC. it makes him enjoy meaningful conversationsD. it gets him out of trouble7.The statement that "ninety-nine percent of human conversation means nomore than the buzzing of a fly" suggests that ________.A. most of the human conversations are inspiring and instructiveB. most of the human conversations are as irritating as the noise made bya flyC. most of the human conversations can be dismissed as meaninglessD. most of the human conversations can be regarded as the effectiveactivities8.According to the passage, a man will look silly if he ________.A. makes mistakes in the conversationB. feels reluctant to join in the conversationC. fails to communicate anything new to others in the conversationD. misunderstands others' meanings in the conversation9.In the author's opinion, the introduction of weather as a conversationalopening indicates ________.A. the ignorance of the conversationalistB. the start of an acceptable conversationC. the coming of something newD. the boring nature of the conversation10. Which of the following statements is true, according to the passage?A. At a dinner party, everyone prefers to talk like a mosquito.B. People despise meaningless conversations.C. People take pride in their roles as conversationalists.D. One can always learn something useful from conversation.Questions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage.Despite laws designed to keep cigarettes away from kids, 34 percent of US high school students and 15 percent of middle school students use tobacco products, government health officials say.Although the statistics show the number of teens using tobacco has started to decline from record highs in 1997, experts say the numbers are still disturbing given that nearly 90 percent of adult smokers began using tobacco at or before the age of 18."We want to emphasize, while cigarettes are the most lethal form of tobacco, adolescents (青少年) are using many forms of tobacco, and potentially becoming addicted (成瘾) to nicotine (尼古丁) from many sources," said Terry Pechacek, head of the survey team and associate director for science with the CDC Office on Smoking and Health.According to the survey, most middle and high school smokers get their tobacco at gas stations and convenience stores. While the legal age to buy tobacco is 18 throughout most of the United States, the survey shows current laws to be ineffective. Approximately 69 percent ofmiddle school students and 58 percent of high school students reported they were not asked for proof of age when purchasing cigarettes.Although the tobacco industry has altered its advertising, ads still lure teens into buying tobacco products, Pechacek said."Tobacco companies voluntarily stopped outdoor billboards (广告牌), but have taken these advertising dollars and put them into local convenience stores," he said. The study also found one of the "major predictors" of tobacco use to be whether teens spend time with other people who smoke. In the week before the survey, half of the nonsmokers were in a room with someone smoking, and approximately 70 percent of middle school students and 57 percent of high school students who smoke live in a home with a smoker.Experts believe that more education about tobacco in schools could counteract (对抗) the bad influences these students face at home.11. Figures provided in the second paragraph indicate that ________.A. most kids between the ages of 12 and 17 are using tobacco productsB. there are more teens using tobacco since 1997C. smokers tend to begin smoking when they were very youngD. laws are designed to keep cigarettes away from kids before the age of1812. According to Terry Pechacek, teenagers using tobacco ________.A. are likely to take drugsB. like using cigarettesC. tend to quit smoking after age of 18D. like trying different forms of tobacco13. Most teenage smokers buy tobacco at gas stations and conveniencestores, because ________.A. cigarettes there are cheaper than those at any other placeB. people there usually don't ask them to prove they have reached legalageC. there are more types of cigarettes there than other placesD. people there put up cigarettes advertisements on the wall14. The word "lure" (Para. 6) most probably means ________.A. temptB. persuadeC. forceD. talk15. According to what Pechacek said, which of the following factors may NOTinfluence teenagers' using tobacco products?A. Advertisement.B. Family.C. School education.D. Government.Questions 16 to 20 are based on the following passage. Some pessimistic experts feel that the automobile is bound to fall into disuse. They see a day in the not-too-distant future when all autos will be abandoned and allowed to rust. Other authorities, however, think the auto is here to stay. They hold that the car will remain a leading means of urban travel in the foreseeable (可预见的) future. The motorcar will undoubtedly change significantly over the next 30 years. It should become smaller, safer, and more economical, and should not be powered by the gasoline engine. The car of the future should be far more pollution-free than present types.Regardless of its power source, the auto in the future will still be the main problem in urban traffic congestion (拥挤). One proposed solution to this problem is the automated (自动化的) highway system. When the auto enters the highway system, a retractable (可伸缩的) arm will drop from the auto and make contact with a rail, which is similar to those powering subway trains electrically. Once attached to the rail, the car will become electrically powered from the system, and control of the vehicle will pass to a central computer. The computer will then monitor all of the car's movements. The driver will use a telephone to dial instructions about his destination into the system. The computer will calculate the best route, and reserve space for the car all the way to the correct exit from the highway. The driver will then be free to relax and wait for the buzzer (蜂鸣器) that will warn him of his coming exit. It is estimated that an automated highway will be able to handle 10,000 vehicles per hour, compared with the 1,500 to 2,000 vehicles that can be carried by a present-day highway.16. One significant improvement in the future car will probably be ________.A. its power sourceB. its monitoring systemC. its driving systemD. its seating capacity17. What is the author's main concern?A. How to render automobiles pollution-free.B. How to make smaller and safer automobiles.C. How to solve the problem of traffic jams.D. How to develop an automated subway system.18. What provides autos with electric power in an automated highwaysystem?A. A rail.B. A retractable arm.C. An engine.D. A computer controller.19. In an automated highway system, all the driver needs to do is _______.A. keep in the right laneB. wait to arrive at his destinationC. keep in constant touch with the computer centerD. inform the system of his destination by phone20. What is the author's attitude toward the future of autos?A. Enthusiastic.B. Optimistic.C. Pessimistic.D. 长篇阅读10题,总分值:20分Directions: You are going to read a passage with 10 statements attached to it. Each statement contains information given in one of the paragraphs. Identify the paragraph from which the information is derived. You may choose a paragraph more than once. Each paragraph is marked with a letter.Proactive Strategies to Build a Social LifeA) A lot of people believe that developing a social life is something that should just happen and develop naturally, without you needing to do anything. I disagree. I think that while this can happen for some folks, in certain stages of their life, it’s not always the case, which is why many of us today lack a fulfilling social life. If you’re in college where you get to hang around lots of other people and you’r e naturally a social person, your social circle will develop on its own. Some of us are more fond of havingjust a few friends, but who are very close to us. And some prefer a mix of the two. You must have the initiative and go to them.F) My recommendation here is to think about activities where you are likely to me et people you’d enjoy interacting with, and get involved in a few of them. For instance, you may take a class on a topic you’re interested in. You may volunteer for a charity organization or join some sort of club. Even if you don’t have any friends whatsoever at this point, you can apply this strategy. You can get involved in such activities all by yourself, and you’ll meet others there.G) In using this strategy, the Internet is your friend. You can discover all sortsof classes, social events, clubs and organizations near you online. But keep in mind that this is only the first step. Then you need to actually get out of the house, go there and participate.H) So you attend a training program on, let’s say, urban photography. There are lots of other people there. What do you do? In general, the passive approach tends to prevail. Many of us just sit around doing nothing and expect others to come talk to us, ask us questions, and be chatty. And this may happen, or it may not. One thing I’m certain of, though,is that it’s not the best approach. You want to be friendly first. Be the one to break the ice.I) Walk up to other people and introduce yourself to them. Then start chatting with them. For example, ask them how they found out about the event, how long th ey’ve been interested in urban photography, change from there into other topics, and if they seem to enjoy talking to you (which they almost always will), keep the conversation going. Doing this may not be easy at first, especially if you’re not used to being this outgoing, but it’s something you get used to with practice. The trick is not to let hesitancy prevent you from being social. And I can tell from experience that if you are social and friendly with new people first, they’ll love you for it.J) If y ou’re building a new social life from scratch, the beginning is always the hardest part. However, once you’ve met a few people, it gets a lot easier because you can then make use of them to meet even more people. You can then meet some of their friends and acquaintances, and expand your social circlefurther.K) Again, a proactive approach works miracles. Let your friends know that you’re interested in meeting new people and you’d love to be introduced to other people they know. If they indeed are your frie nds, they’ll love to help you out. They may invite you to come with them to parties they go to, they may call other people to join you when you go out, and they’ll introduce you to new people. There is certainly no shortage of possibilities to meet people and make friends. It’s u p to you to capitalize on them. Much more likely it is a close female friend—someone calling to tell you that she has split up with her boyfriend again or perhaps simply that a good movie has just started on TV.At a time when families are spread far and wide and marriages often end in divorce, friendships of intimacy and trust are becoming more and more important. The Spanish brought the potato back to Europe with them. But people in Europe did not like this strange vegetable. Some people thought that if you ate potatoes, your skin would look like the skin of a potato. A person could eat eight to ten pounds of potatoes a day, with some milk or cheese, and be very healthy. Soon, potatoes became the main food in Ireland.
