The drug store was closing for the night. Young Alfred Higgins, the stop-assistant, was ready to go home. Mr. Carr, the boss, stared at him and said: “Hold on, Alfred. Maybe you’d be good enough to take the things out of your pockets and leave them here before you go.” Alfred’s face got red. After a little hesitation, he took out what he had stolen. Mr. Carr said, “Maybe I should call you mother and let her know I’m going to have to put you in prison.”

Alfred thought his mother would come rushing in, eyes burning with anger. But, to his surprise, she arrived wearing a smile. “Hello, I’m Alfred’s mother. Is he in trouble?”she said. Mr. Carr was surprised, too. He had expected Alfred’s mother to come in nervously, shaking with fear, asking with wet eyes for a mercy for her son. But no, she was most calm, quiet and pleasant and was making Mr. Carr feel guilty…. Soon Mr. Carr was shaking his head in agreement with what she was saying. “Of course”, he said, “I don’t want to be cruel. You are right. Sometimes, a little good advice is the best thing for a boy at certain times in his life and it often takes the youths long time to get sense into their heads.” And he warmly shook Mrs. Higgins’s hand.

Back home, without even looking at Alfred, she said, "You are a bad luck. It is one thing after another, always has been. Why do you stand there so stupidly? Co to bed." In his bedroom, Alfred heard his mother in the kitchen. There was no shame in him, just pride in his mother's strength.. He felt he must tell her how great she was. As he got to the kitchen, he saw his mother drinking a cup of tea. He was shocked by what he saw. His mother's face was a frightened, broken one. It was not the same cool, bright face he saw earlier in the drug store. As she lifted the tea cup, her hand shook. And some of the tea splashed on the table. Her lips moved nervously. She looked very old. He watched his mother without making a sound. The picture of his mother made him want to cry. He felt his youth coming to an end. In the 1450s Johannes Gutenberg, a Gennan printer, developed a printing press in which ndividual letters could be arranged in lines to create a page of text. Each letter was cast (浇铸) in metal and could be moved around to different parts of the press depending on which words were needed on a particular page. This use of movable type was one of the most important developments in modem history. Previously, most books had been created by copying out text by hand. It had taken many hours to create a single book. With the Gutenberg press, pages could be created in a matter of seconds, and many copies of books could be created in a few hours.

Gutenberg's printing press was not so much an invention, however, as an adaptation of gradually-developing technologies. Printing pictures on paper, using carved and inked wooden blocks, had been a well- known artistic

technique in China and Japan since the eighth century. European artists were making block prints by the end of the 14th century. Another contribution to Gutenberg’s new system also originated in the East: paper. The Chinese invented paper made from rags. Muslim countries were making this inexpensive paper by 800, and it was introduced into Europe in about 1000. At the begin rung, an unpopular alterative to writing sheets made from the skins of animals, rag paper was ideal for the new European printing presses, as it absorbed the oily ink required for the metal type.

Printing soon became an important industry in a rapidly growing world. In 1476, Willian Caxton of London printed and distributed a number of popular stories. By 1500, nearly 35,000 books were in print worldwide. The American colonies gained their first printing press in 1638 when Stephen Burke and Matthew Daye set up shops in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

The printing press did not change significantly for a long time. In the 19 th century, however, iron replaced wood in the press’s framework, and paper became available in continuous rolls rather that more Expensive single sheets. Steam engines increased the speed at which the presses ran. The introduction of linotype (整行铸排机) machines meant that printing plates could be created more rapidly. In the late 1900s, the introduction of high – speed offset presses and the integration of computer technology sharply cut the amount of time it took to turn ideas into books.

49.Which of the following belongs to the 19th century improvement in the printing press?

The past 20 years have produced great advances in technology and communications. As a result, people throughout the world have become ever more connected. The growing link between the nations and people of the world of is called globalization. It is a trend that has changed ways of life around the world.

Perhaps the biggest change in this process is the effect of globalization on commerce. In an effort to build a global economy, most nations of the world have embraced free trade.Free trade removes certain limits imposed(强加)on global commerce to make it easier for nations to exchange goods with one another.A further aim of this process is to aid poor nations and thus reduce poverty.Globalization has indeed increased trade throughout the world, but experts disagree about its effect on the poor.

The debate about recent trends in global commerce is complex. Those who support free trade in the global market point out that competition lowers prices. Its critics argue that, without controls, such a sys-tem often harms poor nations. To some extent, both are correct. For example, Jamaica, a country which imported milk from the United States and the imported milk was cheaper than local milk, more poor people could drink milk and improve their nutrition. At the same time, the cheaper milk put local dairy fanners out of business.Perhaps this program caused as much harm as good.

Those who support free trade in the global market do so for a number of reasons.Studies show that when a poor nation begins Uading on the global level, it gains certain benefits. Its economy grows rapidly.Multinational companies set up factories, which provide jobs for people.Supporters claim that these factors reduce poverty and lessen the gap between the richest and poorest nations. They believe that the global zing trend benefits the poor.

Critics of unrestricted free trade question these conclusions.Although they agree that the global market can offer growth and jobs to poor nations, they doubt that it reduces poverty. In fact, they cite studies that show that poverty has increased as a result of the global market. In addition, the gap between rich and poor nations is

growing.

Regardless of which side they are on, most experts believe that globalization has great potential to aid the poor. Both sides need to find a way to make it work.

53.The growing link between the nations and people of the world is called

A.diversity B.commerce C.communication D.globalization

54.We can know that both sides of the debate agree that free trade

A.results in the rich countries' economic collapse

B.widens the gap between the rich and poor

C.makes it easier for nations to exchange goods

D.has little potential to aid the poor countries

55.The author mentions Jamaica as an example to

A.support an argument B.draw a conclusion

C.introduce a topic D.describe a scene

56.A person who calls for increased rules in the globalization of economy is most likely to be .

A.a supporter of free trade in the global market

B.a critic of free trade in the global market

C.the head of a large imitational company

D.an exporter specialized in making dairy products

As the human brain evolved, humans were able to laugh before they could speak, according to a new study. But here’s the punch line: Laughter and joy are not unique to humans, the study says. Ancestral forms of play and laughter existed in other animals long before humans began laughing.

“Human laughter has its roots in our animation past,” said Jaak Panksepp, a professor of psychobiology at Bowling Green State University in Ohio. Panksepp has studied rats and found that when they “play,” they often chirp (唧唧叫) –an early –stage form of laughter, according to the scientist. In an article to be published tomorrow in the journal Science, he makes the argument that animal laughter is the basis for human joy.

In studying laughter, scientists have focused mostly on related issues – humor, personality, health benefits, social theory – rather than laughter itself. New research, however, shows that “circuits” (电路) for laughter exist in very ancient regions of the human brain. As humans have included language into play, we may have developed new connections to joyous parts of our brains that evolved before the cerebral cortex, the outer layer associated with thought and memory.

There is plenty of evidence that many other mammals make play sounds, which are like human laughter. Indeed, animals are capable of many emotional feelings, just like humans, some scientists say. "The recognition by neuroscientists that the brain systems for pain, pleasure, and fear are the same in humans and other mammals underline our similarity to other species and is extremely important," said Tecumseh Fitch, a psychology lecturer at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. In a 2003 study Panksepp and Bowling Green State University neurobiologist Jeff Burgdorf showed that if rats are tickled (呵痒) in a playful way, they readily chirp. Rats that were tickled developed a relationship with the researchers and became rapidly conditioned to seek tickles. Understanding the chirping of the rats may help scientists better understand human laughter.

Robert Provine, a psychology professor at the University of Maryland in Baltimore, agrees there is an evolutionary continuity of laughter. "Its origin is in tickling play," he says. Provine has studied chimpanzees and found a link between their laughter - like noises and human laughter. "Laughter is actually the sound of play, with the original’ pant –pant’ - the heavy breathing of physical play - becoming the human ‘ha - ha,’” Provine said. By studying the shift from the panting of chimps to the human ha - ha, he discovered that breath control is the key to the appearance of both human laughter and speech.

57.The above text is mainly about .

A.human laughter has its origin in ancient animal play sounds

B.brain regions for mem00 evolved earlier than those for laughter

C.human laughter was once rooted in people's happiness

D.humans actually develop from ancient animals

58.The 2003 study about rats being tickled are mentioned in paragraph 4 in order to show that .

A.rats are such smart aromas that they can laugh like humans

B.animals have emotional feelings as human beings do

C.animals' emotional feelings are now widely recognized

D.tickling animals can help animals develop the ability of laughter

59.According to the text, what is the most special about Jaak Panksepp's research?

A.It focuses on animals' influence on human laughter.

B.People's personalities are involved in the research.

C.The research studies human brain as well.

D.The research deals with laughter itself.

60.We can infer from the above text that

A.Tecumseh Fitch and Robert Provine disagree with each other on laughter

B.rats’ chirping and chimp’s panting are basically the smae

C.most animals are able to laugh but need to be trained first

D.human beings have now fully understood animals’ behaviors

61.David believes people shouldn’t smoke in public places as it harms others.

62.Joe insists that smokers should put the cigarette ends where they should go.

63.Sophie holds that this question should call for a further argument.

64.Michael thinks cigarette taxes should be raised to secure free healthcare for nonsmokers.

65.Bauer thinks that victims of second – hand smoking should leave smoking areas to avoid harm.

A

The stupid thing is, I often see people smoking and then they throw the cigarettes away from them when they have finished, not even stubbing them out but it just seems like once they have finished, they don’t want it near them, perhaps they ought to have to carry their own ash trays in their pockets.

B

In many places, there are no non – smoking bars or restaurants. Unless people refuse to go out with friends who smoke, they cannot avoid passive smoking. Society accepts that adults can decide to harm themselves to some extent, so long as they do not harm others. This is why the proposition is not arguing that people should be banned from smoking in private. Passive smokers do choose to breathe in other people’s smoke. If they do not want to smoke passively, they do not need to go to places where smoking is allowed. There is therefore no reason to ban smoking in public.

D

What I care about is whether people can get free healthcare. Some people deliberately inhale dangerous toxins into their bodies because they're "addicted" (Why did you start? It's not pleasurable until you NEED the fix) when there are other people like my uncle who died of lung cancer and he never smoked in his life. It makes you wonder why cigarettes are so cheap. Surely all the taxes from cigarettes ought to go to help people who don't smoke. Perhaps we ought to sort things out.

E

Completely against it. I work in a bar and I get so sick of coming home smelling like a bonfire. And if that isn't enough, I'm probably going to get lung cancer from those idiots that decide to excite themselves. However, I do understand that for some older smokers it is a force of habit because they may have been smoking long before they knew it was bad for them. I do think there's no excuse for my generation to do it though and if they want to die then go to do it in your own home.

F

Phil and I had a good argument today in the pub, he made the comment that "If he wants to smoke and kill himself, he can!", about which I said "You want to get on your motorbike and risk death, fine", which are basically the same thing. He made the point that he's a good driver and it's not his fault if he gets hurt, but at the end of

the day, his fault or not, he knows he could get killed, and he's still taking the risk of being on a bike. I think it's a sick thing to say, being honest! People

want to put something in their mouth and blow on it, they should be allowed without having things like that being said! It's a free country!

I have noticed that much of the fiction and nonfiction works publishing in Teen Magazine have a happy ending. While these are pleasantly to read, one has to ask how it is possible that there is so much optimism. I'm all for positive thinking, and readers should also be exposed by the darker side of life. Why publish a story about someone whose experiences a tragedy and gets nothing in return? After all, that’s life.

Not every story have a happy ending. I think this would benefit from Teen Magazine’s readers to see both kinds: happy and real.
