林尽水源,便得一山,山有小口,仿佛若有光。便舍船,从口入。初极狭,才通人;

During the Tai-Y uan period of the Chin Dynasty, a fisherman from Wuling, forgetting

how far he had advanced in following a creek, suddenly came to a forest of peach

blossoms. For several hundred paces there was no other kind of trees on either bank of the creek. The delightful-smelling grass was beautiful and fresh, and the falling blossoms were scattered in confusion. The fisherman was seized with wonder. He went to on further, intending to go through the wood, but where the wood ended at the source of the creek he found a hill with a small opening somewhat lighted.

Then the fisherman left his boat and walked through the mouth of the opening. It was

rather narrow at first, barely enough for the passage of one person; but after a few more score steps it widens into an open track. A wide plain was brought into view, dotted with houses in distinct order and full of good fields, beautiful ponds, mulberry, and bamboo. It was checkered with highways and paths between the fields; cock-crow and dog-bark in one village were heard in another. The people plying to and fro and working on the farm were all, men and women, dressed like the outsiders. Both the grey-haired people and the children with hanging-hair tresses all appeared happy and well-contented.

The Song of Youth

译文一

December 8, 1935 ——the eve of the tremendous, historical December Ninth

Movement1 This day Tao-ching was in bed with a high fever. She was sleeping in a

wooden bed in a newly rented room. At dusk, in this cold, dreary, small room, Hsu Hui, Hsiao-yen, and Hou Jui were huddling over a coal stove talking softly.

“When did she get sick?” Hsu Hui asked Hsiao-yen. “Did she see a doctor?”

“Y es,” Hsiao-yen whispered. “The doctor says she has influenza. Also she has been

working too hard. Day and night she held discussions, instigated struggles against reactionary students, and often skipped meals. No wonder her health has suffered as a consequence.”

“She simply overextended herself,” Hou Jui shook his head.

“Y ou people should have taken better care of her!” said Hsu Hui, as she looked uneasily

at the feverish girl, deep in slumber.

Tao-ching stirred. She opened her eyes and smiled at the three people near her bed.

“When did you get here?”she asked, then turned to Hsu Hui, “Has the plan for tomorrow been fixed? Will there be any changes?”

No, I don’t think so,”answered Hsu Hui, smiling. “But don’t worry about anything.

Y ou just take it easy.”And, stretching herself, she asked Hou Jui, “How many people from Peking University do you think will be at the demonstration?”

译文二

It was the eve of the stupendous December the Ninth Movement in 1935.

Tao-ching was ill in bed with a high fever in the cold, bare lodgings to which she had

recently moved. Toward evening Hsu Hui, Hsiao-yen, and Hou Jui gathered there and sat around the stove, talking in low voices.

“How long has she been ill?” Hsu Hui asked Hsiao-Yen. “Have you sent for a doctor?”

“Y es, the doctor’s been,” Hsiao-yen answered in a whisper. “He says it’s influenza. I’

m afraid she’s been overworking these last few days. She’s been on the go day and night, talking with people and planning how to fight the reactionaries. Her resistance has also been lowered by lack of food.”

Hou Jui shook his head, saying, “She’s worn herself out.”

“Y ou should have looked after her better, “Hsu Hui said, worried because Tao-ching

seemed to be in a coma.

Just then Tao-ching recovered consciousness and seeing the three of them, said with a

smile, “When did you arrive? I’d no idea you’d come. Tell me, Hus Hui, is our plan for tomorrow settled? There won’t be any changes, will there?”

“It’s not likely.” Hsu Hui bent over her with a smile. “Don’t you worry. Just have a good

rest.”She turned to asked Hou Jui beside her, “How many Peking University students do you think will take part in the demonstration?”

The title of this bilingual collection, Cherished dawn Blossoms, reminds one of a bouquet

of reopened blossom. These blossoms of Chinese literature were once in full bloom in much-read books, in teachers’curricula and on the lips of students. Time flows like water in a river. Ten or more years hence those students would have grown up, but whatever positions they might hold in society today, they will never forget those beautiful pieces of prose, poetry and stories in their old school books. The sound of the classroom recital of those masterpieces still echo in their ears, making them nostalgic for those school days.

One day, an idea suddenly hit us, the editors of this series—wouldn’t it be wonderful to

pick up those cherished blossoms and arrange them into bouquets for our readers who would probably look at them again from a new perspective, a matured aesthetic judgment?

层层的叶子中间,零星地点缀着些白花,有袅娜地开着的,有羞涩地打着朵儿的;

All over this winding stretch of water, what meets the eye is a silken field of leaves,

reaching rather high above the surface, like the skirts of dancing girls in all their grace.

Here and there, layers of leaves are dotted with white lotus blossoms, some in demure bloom, others in shy bud, like scattering pearls, or twinkling stars, or beauties just out of the bath. A breeze stirs, sending over breaths of fragrance, like faint singing drifting from

a distant building.

At this moment, a tiny thrill shoots through the leaves and flowers, like a streak of

lightning, straight across the forest of lotuses. The leaves, which have been standing shoulder to shoulder, are caught trembling in an emerald heave of the pond. Underneath, the exquisite water is covered from view, and none can tell its colour; yet the leaves on top project themselves all the more attractively.

Reed Flute Cave is the most magnificent of all in Guilin. It derives its name from the

reeds at its entrance, which were once used to make flutes. The cave was first discovered in the Tang Dynasty. Since 1959, it has been turned into a tourist attraction. Inside the cave there are many unusual stalactite and stalagmite formations, which resemble coral, amber and jade under colourful lights. Their shapes suggest images of old trees, dense shrubs, ferocious beads and human forms.

The cave has a vast grotto, known as Crystal Palace, capable of holding up to 1,000

people. Legend has it that the stone pillar in the grotto is the Dragon King’s magic needle.

The underground path opens out onto a terrace which affords a panoramic view of the surrounding mountains, farmland and river courses.

The earthworm is a useful animal. On the ground it is food for other animals. Under the

ground, it makes rich soil for fields and gardens.

Earthworms dig tunnels that loosen the soil and make it for air and water to reach the

roots of plants. These tunnels help keep the soil well drained.

Earthworms drag withered leaves, grass and flowers into their burrows. When this

plant litter decays, it makes the soil more fertile.

No other animal is so useful in building up good topsoil. It is estimated that in one

year fifty thousand earthworm carry about eighteen tons of fine soil to the surface of an acre of land.

The Most Important Speech of the Century

We learned how far up he’s come on New Y ear’s Day when every Chinese newspaper heralded a 6000-word speech in which Deng signaled the end of thousands of years of Chinese xenophobia.

It may eventually come to be regarded the most important speech of the century. For in it, the Maximum Leader of the nation that comprises one-fourth of mankind served notice that China is joining the rest of the world (save Albania) in the 20th century.

“No country can develop by closing its door,” said Deng. “We suffered from this, and our forefathers suffered from this.”Reversing thousands of years of official hostility to the world outside the Great Wall, Deng said simply: “Isolation landed China in poverty, backwardness and ignorance.”

This startling admission contradicts thousands of years of Chinese policy, going back beyond the Ming Dynasty to the Chin Dynasty, when the wall was erected to keep barbarians on horseback out in wilds where they belonged.

Deng’s message: Do not renounce Marxism, but adopt capitalist ideas where they make sense—“it can’t harm us.” Economic reform, spearheaded by younger leaders, is the single most important bulwark for the nation’s security, for only with economic strength can bombs, missiles and planes be purchased.

If China is trying to catch up to the rest of the world in the 20th century, maybe the 21st century will belong to them. They have people, brains and they can be impressively disciplined. And their industrial potential is awesome.

It may come to be commonly accepted in the next century that the most significant speech ever given by a fellow with a cowboy hat came not from Ronald Reagan but from an 80-year-old Chinese man.

The town collected to see them depart, and the children ran after their carriage through the gate of the little city. They heard a rush of feet behind them for a few moments, but soon they were far down towards the valley; the little town with all its noise and life was high above them on its mountain peak. She had planted the rose at home, where it had grown and flourished in a wonderful manner; and every June the great mass of leaves and shoots still broke out into a passionate splendour of scent and crimson colour, as if in its root and fibres there still burnt the anger and thwarted desire of that Italian lover. Of course the old Conte must have died many years ago; she had forgotten his name, and had even forgotten the name of the mountain city that she had stayed in, after first seeing it twinkling at dawn in the sky, like a nest of stars.

So where there is financial connection, we see that rapid improvements in quality of life can quickly follow. In our modern context, there are several important channels to achieving this greater financial connectivity. I want to highlight two today: increased capital mobility and increased financial inclusion. First, enabling capital to flow more freely. Allowing capital to flow across borders can help support inclusive growth. Right now, foreign direct investment —FDI — is only 1.9 percent of GDP in developing countries. Before the global financial crisis, it was at 2.5 percent. Making progress on major infrastructure needs will require capital flows to rise again and to be managed safely. Greater openness to capital flows can also bring down the cost of finance, improve the efficiency of the financial sector, and allow capital to support productive investments and new jobs. Challenges that come with opening up capital markets. Thankfully, we know from experience the elements that are required for success. These include sound financial regulation, transparent rules for investment, and attention to fiscal sustainability. We also need increased financial inclusion. A few numbers: close to half of the adult population in low and middle-income Asia-Pacific economies do not have a bank account. Less than 10 percent have ever borrowed from a financial institution. And yet, we know that closing the finance gap is an “economic must-have” for nations to thrive in the 21st century. IMF analysis shows that if the least financially inclusive countries in Asia narrowed the finance gap to the level of Thailand — an emerging market economy — the poverty rate in those countries could be reduced by nearly 4 percent. How can we get there? In part, through policies that enable more women and rural citizens to access financial services. The financial gender gap for women in developing countries is about 9 percent and has remained largely unchanged since 2011. There is no silver bullet, but we know that fintech can play a catalyzing role. In Cambodia, for example, strong public-private partnerships in supporting mobile finance has led to a tripling in the number of micro-financial institutions since 2011. These institutions have now provided loans to over 2 million new borrowers, representing nearly 20 percent of the adult population. Many of these citizens had never had a bank account. Now they can save for the future and perhaps even start a business of their own. These are ideas that can work everywhere. But countries have to be willing to partner and learn from each other. That is one of the major reasons why last October, the IMF and World Bank launched the Bali Fintech Agenda. The agenda lays out key principles — from developing financial markets to safeguarding financial integrity — that can help each nation as it strives for greater financial inclusion.

It went unnoticed for a second until Corinne screamed; then they all saw it, a little flea of fire glowing beside the perfect navel. Joanne jumped, and squealed with guilt, and flapped her hands and stamped her feet and hugged the baby against her, but the evidence could not be destroyed; a brown dot of char on the globe of immaculate skin. Corinne continued her screams, splicing them with shrill hard gasps of intake, while everyone rummaged through purses and pockets for Vaseline, butter, toothpaste – anything for an urgent. 1. The winds of November were like summer breezes to him, and his face glowed with the pleasant cold. His cheeks were flushed and his eyes glistened; his vitality was intense, shining out upon others with almost a material warmth. 2. It was morning, and the new sun sparkled gold across the ripples of gentle sea. The sea was wonderfully calm and now it was rich with all the color of the setting sun. In the sky already a solitary star twinkled. 3. To appease their thirst its readers drank deeper than before, until they were seized with a kind of delirium. 4. Early Reagan was a mirror image of early Carter. 5. Up Broadway he turned, and halted at a glittering café, where are gathered together nightly the choicest products of the grapes, the silkworm and the protoplasm. 6. Words are not themselves a reality but only representation of it, and the King's English, like the Anglo-French of the Normans, is a class representation of reality. 7. At 19 he had commenced one of those careers attractive and inexplicable to ordinary mortals for whom a single bankruptcy is good as a feast. (good as a feast 如直译为"像丰盛的宴席一样好",意思正好反了.

1) Possession for its own sake or in competition with the rest of the neighborhood would have been Thoreau's idea of the low levels. The active discipline of heightening one's perception of what is enduring in nature would have been his idea of the high. What he saved from the low was time and effort he could spend on the high. Thoreau certainly disapproved of starvation, but he would put into feeding himself only as much effort as would keep him functioning for more important efforts. Effort is the gist of it. There is no happiness except as we take on life-engaging difficulties. Short of the impossible, as Yeats put it, the satisfaction we get from a lifetime depends on how high we choose our difficulties. Robert Frost was thinking in something like the same terms when he spoke of "The pleasure of taking pains". The mortal flaw in the advertised version of happiness is in the fact that it purports to be effortless. We demand difficulty even in our games. We demand it because without difficulty there can be no game. A game is a way of making something hard for the fun of it. The rules of the game are an arbitrary imposition of difficulty. When someone ruins the fun, he always does so by refusing to play by the rules. It is easier to win at chess if you are free, at your pleasure, to change the wholly arbitrary rules, but the fun is in winning within the rules. No difficulty, no fun.

My First Job When I reached the age of twelve I left the school for ever and got my first fulltime job, as a grocer’s boy. I spent my days carrying heavy loads, but I enjoyed it. It was only my capacity for hard work that saved me from early dismissal, for I could never stomach speaking to my “betters” with the deference my employer thought I should assume. But the limit was reached one Tuesday — my half holiday. On my way home on that day I used to carry a large basket of provisions to the home of my emplo yer’s sister-in-law. As her house was on my way home I never objected to this. On this particular Tuesday, however, just as we were putting the shutters up, a load of smoked hams was delivered at the shop. “Wait a minute,” said the boss, and he opened the load and took out a ham, which he started to bone and string up. I waited in growing impatience to get on my way, not for one minute but for a quite a considerable time. It was nearly half-past two when the boss finished. He then came to me with the ham, put it in the basket beside me, and instructed me to deliver it to a customer who had it on order. This meant going a long way out of my road home, so I looked up and said to the boss: “Do you know I finish at two on Tuesday?” I have never seen a man look m ore astonished than he did then. “What do you mean?” he gasped. I told him I meant that I would deliver the groceries as usual, but not the ham. He looked at me as if I were some unusual kind f insect and burst into a storm of abuse. But I stood firm. He gave me up as hopeless and tried new tactics. “Go out and get another boy,” he yelled at a shop-assistant. “Are you going to deliver them or not?” the boss turned to me and asked in a threatening tone. I repeated what I had said before. “Then, out of here,” he shouted. So I got out. This was the first time I had serious trouble with an employer.
