As a parent of young children, I have become a fan of the day trip.(一日游）Here are three great day trips in South California.

Los Angeles County—Malibu

Malibu is one of my favorite L. A. Beach destinations. Along with great beaches,

and getting sandy, you might want to visit the Getty Villa. If you like to explore,

you should definitely check out Leo Carillo State Beach. Before going, check to make

The best thing about Ventura is that the beaches aren’t quite as crowded in the

summer as many of the beaches further south. Start your day at Ventura Harbor Village.

San Diego Country—Coronado

In my opinion, Coronado is one the most beautiful communities in San Diego. Start

off your day at the Coronado Ferry Landing with a fun bike. If you don’t have your

own, go to Bikes and Beyond to rent one. There are miles of bike pathways that wind

along the San Diego Bay. When in Coronado, you should visit Coronado Central Beach.

This beach is huge with lovely white sand.

A daycation may not involve relaxing at a hotel. However, day trips are great ways

to have fun and travel on a budget. Although I have fun and travel on Southern

California my entire life, I continue to find beautiful new beaches and places to

explore.

My mother-in-law was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s(老年痴呆症) at the age of

sixty-five. Over time, her memory loss became more frequent and caused more concern.

It was difficult to find things for her around the house. But I refused to let the

disease have the upper hand.

Mom and I walked around the yard, this time with a can of spray paint.

“Okay, Mom, cut back any plant sprayed with red paint. If you don’t see red,

don’t cut.”

“I can do that,” she replied.

And it worked!

This was just the beginning of the many challenges Alzheimer’s would bring to

our family. There was the time when Mom professionally cleaned my bathroom mirrors

and glass shower doors with deodorizing spray(除臭喷雾). Occasionally she would tear

a sheet from the roll of paper towel folded under her arm. It was a brief “life as

usual” moment for Mom; she felt useful and I didn’t have the heart to stop her.

I was surprised that the more time I spend with Mom, the more I longed to look
