Stagnant(停滞的) scientific education endangers US. economic leadership, says a report by leading business and science figures.

Released at a congressional meeting attended by senators(参议员) and Congress members o both parties, the report updates a 2005 science education report that led to moves to double federal

research funding.

Nevertheless, the Rising Above the Gathering Storm review finds little improvement in U.S. elementary and secondary technical education since then.

“Our nation’s future has worsened,” concludes the report panel headed by former Lockheed chief Martin Norman Augustine. The report “paints a discouraging future for America if it were to continue on the perilous path it has been following’’:

● U.S. K-12 education in mathematics and science ranks 48th worldwide.

● 49%of U.S. adults don’t know how long it takes for the Earth to circle the sun.

Although US school achievement scores have stagnated, harming the economy as employers look elsewhere for competent workers, the report says that other nations have made gains.

If the USA’s students matched Finland’s, for example, analysis suggests the US economy would grow 9%-16%. “The real point is that we have to have a well-educated workforce to create opportunities

for young people” says Charles Vest, head of the National Academy of Engineeringa report sponsor.“Otherwise, we don’t have a chance.”

“The current economic crisis makes the link between education and employment very clear,’’ says Steven Newton of the National Center for Science Education in Oakland.

In 2007, however, an analysis led by B. Lindsay Lowell of Georgetown University found that worries about US science education were overblown(夸大的). It saw three tmes more science and engineering college graduates than job openings each year. Other reports have found top science and engineering students migrating to better-paying jobs in finance, law and medicine since the 1900s.

56. What would be the best title for the passage?

A. Poor science education harms US economy

B. America’s future will become worse

C. Experts’ worries about US science education

D. The connection between education and employment

57. The underlined word “perilous” in the fourth paragraph means “__________”.

A. straight

B. different

C. dangerous

D. narrow

58. We can conclude from what Charles Vest says that ___________.

A. he is satisfied with America’s science education

B. improving science education helps the growth of the U. S. economy

C. American young people have no chance to find good-paying jobs

D. Finland’s students are not as good as the USA’s students in school achievement

B

Motorists over the age of 75 face compulsory tests of their eyesight and ability to drive under proposals being considered by ministers.

The biggest overhaul of motoring law in a generation could also lead to all drivers having to give assurances(保证) of their fitness to get behind the wheel every 10 years.

Other changes under consideration include issuing(发放) daylight driving licenses for motorists with night blindness, together with stricter checks on all drivers whose medical condition brought a threat to other road users.

It is understood that the proposals will be part of a review of the law governing the medical

fitness of drivers that will be announced publicly by the summer.

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency is dealing with a rising number of motorists who are concerned that they have conditions---from failing eyesight to epilepsy---that could affect their

driving.

In 2006, the DVLA dealt with 600,000 motorists whose physical ability to drive needed to be recertified(重新认证), a 20 per cent rise on the previous year. With an ageing population, the biggest challenge is dealing with the rising number of elderly motorists. By 2021, there will be an estimated three million drivers over the age of 70 on Britain’s roads.

Drivers must renew their licenses at the age of 70 and every three years thereafter. The applicant

is legally required to tell the DVLA of any conditions that could weaken their ability behind the wheel. Ministers have ruled out a compulsory maximum age for driving but will instead rely on tightening up the checks on motorists over the age of 75. The most likely option would be tests to ensure motorists were fit to drive. They would include an eyesight test and a cognitive(认知) test that would prove a driver's ability to react to road signs, driving conditions, pedestrians and vehicles.

However, checks are likely to be tightened at all ages. The strictest controls are expected to be imposed(强制) on motorists of any age who have had a heart attack or stroke. They could have to produce a doctor's approval to resume(重新得到) driving. Anyone making a false declaration would be guilty of a criminal offence.

59. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

A. The new motoring law will come into effect by the summer.

B. Drivers over the age of 75 must renew their licenses every three years.

C. Doctors will decide whether one can get their driving licenses.

D. Drivers at all ages will be expected to provide their medical condition.

60. What is the biggest challenge to the traffic safety in Britain according to the writer?

A. Ageing population.

B. Increasing number of cars.

C. Increasing number of elderly motorists.

D. Driving conditions.

61. The underlined word “overhaul” in Paragraph 2 means _______.

A. change

B. consideration

C. concern

D. challenge

62. What can be learned from the passage?

A. There will be more and more aged drivers in Britain.

B. Anyone can get a driving license as long as he/she is in good health.

C. Health tends to decline as one gets old.

D. It will be guilty to make a false declaration.

Yamilette Colon was close to leaving a school. “I’m not even going to lie to you, and I was bad,’’ said Colon, who admitted she had a gift for attracting trouble.

Three years later, though, Colon, now 18, is a school honor student on track for a May diploma, spurred in part by a sense of self-pride, but also, she says, by the economic disaster that has closed plants, deprived of jobs and dimmed the future for many young people in this depressed county.

“It’s a huge factor,” Colon said, “What it comes down to is, the longer you stay in school, the more education you will get, and the more money you will make.”

That’s a big shift in attitude in a community where 24 percent of adults older than 25 have not a high school education, where only 66 percent of students graduate from high school in four years, and where generations of kids dropped out because it was always easy to find a suitable job.

But across the country, education leaders say they’re seeing what may be one bright spot in the discouraging downturn: more students choose to stay in or return to school.

“I’m hearing kids clinging to their education as the economy gets worse,’’ said Clyde Riley, principal at the Tipton Street Center alternative school, where Colon is one of 240 students in a

district that serves some 13,500.

Here and elsewhere, long waiting lists for adult education and GED (General Education Development) classes, enrollments at community colleges and, perhaps, a surge in returns by high school dropouts and a decline in those who leave in the first place, may all point to a renewed focus on education, experts say.

“If there’s anything good coming out of this recession, it’s to make educational lemonade out of these lemons.” said Bob Wise, who now heads a national policy group.

63. According to the text, Colon was a girl __________.

A. who dropped out of school at 15 years old

B. who often made trouble at school

C. who was driven out of school because of lying

D. who was honored for fighting bravely

64. Why did Colon become an honor student?

A. Because she had a gift for academic learning.

B. Because she intended to change the economic situation.

C. Because she showed anxiety for her future.

D. Because she was often asked to stay after school.

65. Which of the following is true according to the passage?

A. Most dropouts did quite well in their lessons.

B. All the dropouts think school life boring.

C. Some dropouts found it easy to get a job.

D. Dropouts return because they have earned enough.

66. What might be the most suitable title for the passage?

A. Students stay longer at school

B. Dropouts drop back to school

C. Recession made more students drop out

D. Teens change their attitudes to education

If you have a fever, headache and runny nose, you might go to Google and type in the words “flu symptoms” to see whether you’ve come down with the disease.

Google knows that you might do something like that, and it also knows which state you’re in if you are in the United States. Now, it’s putting that information together in a tool that could find out flu outbreaks faster than traditional systems currently in use, according to CNN report. It is called Google Flu Trends.

“What’s exciting about Flu Trends is that it lets anybody---doctors, health officials, moms with sick children---learn about the current flu activity level in their own state based on the data that’s coming in this week,” said Jeremy Ginsberg, the lead engineer who developed the tool.

The tool operates on the idea that there’s likely to be a flu outbreak in states where flu-related search terms are currently popular.

To test the accuracy of the data, Google compared its figures against statistics filed(提交) over the past five years by the US Centers for Disease Control. It has a network of 1,500 doctors across the US who provide weekly reports on the number of patients complaining of flu-like symptoms.

“We found we could highly accurately estimate what the flu activity levels would be in those years,” Ginsberg said. They also found that the Google statistics, which can be gathered daily, were up to two weeks ahead of the government’s data. The government’s data took time to collect because it came from so many doctors.

The ability to speed up the response of health services could prove invaluable when a serious outbreak happens.

The results of Google’s comparisons with official health statistics will be published in the science journal Nature.

Google hopes to extend the service to other countries, and may in time include other illnesses. At present, the flu data is given for each of the 50 American states.

The company says there are no privacy issues involved as the trends are gathered through combining millions of anonymous(匿名的) searches.

67. What is Google Flu Trends?

A. A tool to identify flu symptoms.

B. An organization for disease control.

C. A network of 1,500 doctors.

D. A system to estimate flu activity levels.

68. What led to the development of Google Flu Trends?

A. The fact that a lot of people use online information every day.

B. The idea that a flu outbreak is likely where flu-related search terms are popular.

C. The need to have a faster system than traditional ones currently in use by the government.

D. The patients’ complaining of flu-like symptoms.

69. The most important reason for Google Flu Trends’ accurate and reliable estimates is that

__________.

A. it bases its estimates on Google flu-related search data

B. it benefits a lot from the official data

C. it has lots of excellent doctors

D. it can identify the flu symptoms

70. Which is NOT true according to the passage?

A. The government’s data mentioned in the passage came from a network of 1,500 doctors across the US.

B. Google Flu Trends’ reports can be one or two weeks ahead of those by the government.

C. Google Flu Trends’ estimates prove quite accurate and reliable.

D. Anyone around the world can enjoy the service of Google Flu Trends.

第四部分 任务型阅读 (共10小题;每小题1分,满分分)

阅读下面的短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入最恰当的单词。注意:每空一词 When it comes to the world of computers, green computing is becoming one of the most popular trends. But, what is exactly is green computing?

The term “green computing” is one that is being used in many different markets and areas all over the world in today’s global technology. Yet, many computer users out there aren’t sure what it means. Green computing is actually pretty easy to explain and to do---it is basically learning to use computer resources more efficiently to help the environment as well as making energy savings. The main goal of a green computing program is to reduce the use of energy and materials that harm the environment. Green computing helps to promote the use of biodegradable products and recycle computer parts whenever possible.

Green computing started as early as 1992, when the EPA created Energy Star, which is a voluntary labeling program that promotes energy efficient computing equipment and technologies.

It was because of this program that many computer manufacturers launched sleep mode and millions of computer users around the world began to adopt this policy to help save energy when they were not using their computers. The term “green computing” began to be used around the same time as well, and began to become a goal that more companies strive to meet over the years. There are several government agencies that have continued to help strive for better standards for computers and companies to help promote green promoting. Energy Star was actually revised in October of 2006 to make the requirements stricter for computers, and also implemented a ranking system for products. Because of these new requirements, there are over 20 states that have now established a special recycling program for old computers and electronics to help with green computing.

Many of today’s IT systems are beginning to rely on both people and hardware to help push their computer systems toward a more green computing system to help both the company and others. This is a hard balance to achieve, as it has to satisfy users, management, and regulatory compliance(顺从). Even the disposal of computer waste is all managed that everyone in the circle is happy with the outcome. Many companies are learning the best ways that they call go greener when it comes to their computing and also help their business in the process. While many home computer users may not be quite as familiar with green computing as large firms, this term is starting to become more mainstream all around the world and the requirements for new, better computers to help both the companies and the end users of the equipment, as well as our environment, are becoming more and more urgent.

书面表达:

Dear editor,

Recently our class have had a heated discussion on how middle school students should make friends. As we all know, good interpersonal relationship plays an important role in building a harmonious society.

Many people suggest that they should make friends who are of great benefit to their studies, so they will help each other and make greater progress with their studies. Some believe that they should have friends related to their life. Whenever they have difficulty dealing with problems in terms of life, they can help rid themselves of the problems. In addition, others agree that they should have some friends who can listen to them attentively and share their bitterness and joy.

What I want to stress is that each of us should have a true friend. To make friends, we should try to remember the names of the people we contact and learn not to judge people by their appearances. Besides, we need to be friendly and care about them. When disagreement does occur, it’s wise of us to talk it over to others. In brief, making true friends can really enable us to improve ourselves.

Yours ever,

Li Hua

Text 1

M: This TV set is getting worse and worse. Now it doesn’t work at all.

W: Here’s an advertisement about a big TV sale. There might be some good bargains in it.

Text 2

W: The violin sounds terrible.

M: I wish I could ask for my money back. This performance is really a bad one.

Text 3

W.: Did you go to Tony and Tina’s wedding on the weekend?

M: Yes, I did. It was a really nice wedding.

W: Are they on their honeymoon now?

M: Yes, they went to Italy the day after their wedding.

Test 4

W: Paul, are you taking the bus or the underground to your office?

M: My doctor suggests I walk, not even cycle.

Test5

M: Hey, fast food can be bought at the gas station in the near future.

W: Oh, that would be more convenient for us.

M: Yeah, and we wouldn’t even need to get out of the car.

Test 6

W: Hey, Mister. What are you doing? Why don’t you wait in line?

M: I’m sorry. I was here first. But then the clerk told me I need to go get my ID, so…

W: Even so, that’s your own carelessness. You can’t jump the line while others are waiting.

M: Sorry, I need the money fast. My mother is in the hospital.

W: I’m sorry, I didn’t know you were in urgent need of money.

M: It doesn’t matter. Anyway, the rules must be followed. I will go back to the end of the line. Test 7

W: Hello. Can I see your passport and visa, please?

M: Here you are.

W: Do you have anything to declare?

M: I didn’t bring too many things, but I have no idea which things I need to declare.

W: Like cigars, valuable electrical appliances or lots of cash.

M: Well, I have a notebook PC. Does that need to be declared?

W: It doesn’t.

Test 8

W: Why do you look so unhappy, Jim?

M: I don’t know what to say. It is a long story.

W: Do you mind telling me?

M: It’s all right. I hate myself. Yesterday, when Tom asked me to borrow my bike to go to the post office, I refused him.

W: Why?

M: It’s a present from my mother. She bought it last week for my birthday.

W: No wonder you refused Tom.

M: That’s not the only reason. I refused to lend him my bike partly because last week when I asked Tom to lend me some money, I was refused by Tom. So I had to go without food for one day.

W: If so, he refused you money and you refused him your bike. Why do you feel so sorry?

M: In fact, I’ve come to realize that it was mainly my mistake. This morning, I got to know that Tom didn’t lend me money because he himself didn’t have any money with him. He is from a poor family and he always has to go without breakfast.

W: Now you know that. What have you decided to do?
