Good Table Manners

Manners play an important part in making a favorable impression at the dinner table. Here are some general rules:

Napkin(餐巾)use

The meal begins when the host unfolds his or her napkin. This is your signal to do the same, so place your napkin on your lap. Unfold it completely if it is a small napkin, or in half, lengthwise(纵向地),if it is a large dinner napkin.

If you need to leave the table during the meal, place your napkin on your chair as a signal to your server that you will be returning. Once the meal is over, place your napkin neatly on the table to the right of your dinner plate. Do not refold it.

/

Use a napkin only for your mouth. Never use it for your nose, face or forehead.

Use of utensils(餐具)

Start with the knife, fork or spoon furthest from your plate, and work your way in, using one utensil for each course.

If soup is served, remember to spoon away from yourself. This helps stop the drips. Do not put the entire soup spoon in your mouth. Instead, fill a soup spoon about 75 percent with soup, and sip(啜饮)it from the side noiselessly.

After finishing dinner, place the knife and fork parallel to one another across the plate with the knife facing inward toward the plate.

Using your fingers

Here's a list of finger foods: sandwiches, cookies, small fruits or berries with stems, French fries and potato chips, and hamburgers.

Chew(咀嚼)with your mouth closed and don't make noise; don't talk with your mouth full.

Bread must be broken with your hands. It is never cut with a knife.

Don't pick something out of your teeth. Instead, excuse yourself to the bathroom.

[

If possible, try not to cough at the table.

Do not put your elbows(肘)on the table. In France, it is essential to have both hands above the table at the same time.

Do not put bones or anything else on the table. Things that are not eaten should be put on your plate.

1. Where is the napkin normally placed during the meal

A. On your chair.

·

If you ale saving for a big purchase like a mountain bike or a school trip, where would you save your money

One place to save money is the bank. Putting your money in a savings account

will help your money earn more money. If you put your money in a piggy bank(猪形储蓄罐), one year later you'11 still have the same amount of money you put in. If you put your money in a savings account, one year later, you'll have more money than you put in. Why

When you keep your money in a bank, your money earns interest. Interest is an amount of money a bank pays you to use your money. The bank uses your money (and the money of other people too) to loan money to people and businesses.

The bank will send you a statement several times a year. A bank statement tells you how much money you have in your account It also tells you how much interest you have earned If you leave your money in the bank, you can watch it grow! Another way you can save money is to buy a certificate of deposit or CD. If you have some money that you don't need to use for a long time, this is a good way to make your money grow. You Can buy a CD at a bank You agree not to use the money for a certain period of time That period might be from six months to five years. You can't touch your money during that time. If you do, you must pay a penalty or fee.

Can trees talk Yes, but not in words. Scientists have reason to believe that trees do communicate (交际) with each other. Not long ago, researchers learned some surprising things. First a willow tree attacked in the woods by caterpillars (毛虫) changed the chemistry of its leaves and made them taste so terrible that they got tired of the leaves and stopped eating them. Then even more astonishing, the tree sent out a special smell---a signal (信号) causing its neighbors to change the chemistry of their own leaves and make them less tasty.

-

Communication, of course, doesn’t need to be in words. We can talk to eac h other by smiling, raising our shoulders and moving our hands. We know that birds and animals use a whole vocabulary of songs, sounds, and movements. Bees dance their signals, flying in certain patterns that tell other bees where to find nectar (花蜜) for h oney. So why shouldn’t trees have ways of sending message

Schooling and Education

It is commonly believed in the United States that school is where people go to get an education. Nevertheless, it has been said that today children interrupt their education to go to school. The distinction between schooling and education implied by this remark is important.

Education is much more open-ended and all-inclusive than schooling. Education

knows no limits. It can take place anywhere, whether in the shower or in the job, whether in a kitchen or in a theatre. It includes both the formal learning that takes place in schools and the whole universe of informal learning. The agents of education can range from a respected grandparent to the people debating politics on the radio, from a child to a distinguished scientist. Whereas schooling has a certain predictability, education quite often produces surprises. A chance conversation with a stranger may lead a person to discover how little is known of other religions. People are engaged in education from infancy(婴儿期)on. Education, then, is a very broad, inclusive term. It is a lifelong(一生的)process, a process that starts long before the start of school, and one that should be an integral(基本的)part of one's entire life.

Schooling, on the other hand, is a specific, formalized process, whose general pattern varies little from one setting to the next. Throughout a country, children arrive at school at approximately the same time, take assigned(指定的)seats, are taught by an adult, use similar textbooks, do homework, take exams, and so on. The slices of reality that are to be learned, whether they are words or an understanding of the working of government, have usually been limited by the boundaries of the subject being taught. For example, high school students know that they are not likely to find out in their classes the truth about political problems in their communities or what the newest filmmakers are experimenting with. There are definite conditions surrounding the formalized process of schooling.

16. Which of the following is true according to the author

A. School is the place where people get informal education

B. Education means schooling

C. Education can be both formal and informal

D. Going to school is the only way to receive education

17. Education is different from schooling in that ______.

A. the former is predictable while the latter is not

B. the former is specific while the latter is not

C. the former is a formalized process while the latter is not

D. the former is more open-ended and all-inclusive than the latter

~

18. When does education begin

A. Before one enters school

B. After one enters school

C. After one graduates from college

D. After one retires from work

19. The fact that children arrive at school at about the same time shows that ______.

A. schooling imposes a lot of strain on the students

B. schooling has a clear boundary

C. schooling follows more or less the same pattern.

D. schooling includes different aspects of learning

}

20. What is the author's attitude toward schooling

A. Positive

B. Negative

C. Neutral(中立的)

Shopping rationally is a positive way to make your money more valuable. The way you buy something or some service can actually save you money or spend more. Make a simple example of a hairdryer. If you want to buy a hairdryer, when you choose a hairdryer with a favourite look and a cheapest price, you must think you get the best one.But when you get it home, you find it will take twice times more expensive to dry your hair. The cost of electricity and your time is more likely to make your hairdryer the most expensive one.

六.Writing作文(20’)

In this section, you are asked to write a composition entitled Harmful Effect of Pirated Software on the Society. Your writing should be about 100-150 words and based on the following outline:

1.盗版软件已对社会产生了不良影响

2.盗版软件泛滥的原因

3.如何制止盗版软件

We need to stop Software Piracy

Nowadays,China has often been criticized for the rampant practice of software opera te on pirated Windows systems, PC security softwares, Microsoft Office, Adobe Ph otoshop, and etc. It’s no exaggeration that pirated software is everywhere.

The reasons why pirated software has run wild are as follows. First, there is a huge profit behind it. Each pirated disc will produce 50% of the profit. Second, there is no very strict law to control the pirated software. That last reason is that education or publicity has fallen behind. People are not aware of the harm which pirated software would bring to the market and they like to buy it.

Despite these apparent benefits, the practice of software piracy should be banned, b ecause it represents unfair competition and by nature it’s a no-win situation. But how Two approaches are to be taken at the same time: Technically, software developers s hould enhance their antipiracy engineering, so that cracking the software should be v irtually impossible. And legally, our government should also tighten its antipiracy law s and toughen up the penalties, so that violations should be costly.

III.Read the article and choose one best answer to each of the following multiple choice questions according to the article ( 40%): New Economy As America emerges from what may be the shortest economic slump in memory, there is increasing evidence that New Economy factors---- including high productivity rates, better inventory management, more flexible labor markets, and a greater share of jobs in the service sector ---- were in fact responsible for the brevity of the slowdown. As the remarkable US expansion of the 1990s appears to be continuing, the New Economy seems to have passed the first real test of its resiliency. And the structural changes being driven by the New Economy have not receded or been impeded by the changes of the last year; rather, they are as strong as ever. As these structural changes continue to sweep through our national economy, they are restructuring and reshaping the 50 state economies. In 1999, at the height of the New Economy euphoria, PPI released its first State New Economy Index, which included 17 indicators to measure the degree to which state economies were structured and operated according to the tenets of the New Economy. In 2002, after the New Economy has proved itself and is being viewed by most with a more careful and realistic eye, PPI’s 2002 State index uses 21 economic indicators to measure these differences and ass ess states’ progress as they adapt to the new economic order. With these indicators as a frame of reference, the report then outlines a state-level public policy framework aimed at boosting the incomes of all Americans. While in 1999 many thought that the New Economy changed everything (including the need for companies to make a profit), in 2001 many scoffed at it as simply a flash in the pan or, worse, a myth spun by an over-imaginative media. Many questioned if after the superb economic performance of the 1990s we were doomed to return to the dismal days of the later 1970s and 1980s. The reality is that the New Economy was neither an epochal and dizzying transformation nor a slogan generated by some dot-com companies looking to inflate their IPO prices. Rather it was and is the kind of profound transformation of all industries that happens perhaps twice ina century. Such a change is equivalent in scope and depth to the rise of the manufacturing economy in the 1890s and the emergence of the mass-production, corporate economy in the 1940s and 1950s. As we pass through one of those groundswells that regularly but infrequently reshape the economy (and society) from top to bottom, there will be occasional bumps along the way---- like the recent economic downturn---- but these are the negative phrases within what we can expect to be a much longer growth period.
