Comment on the red word The Scarlet Letter attained(取得) an immediate and lasting success because it addressed (处理)spiritual and moral issues from a uniquely American standpoint. In 1850, adultery(通奸)was an extremely risqu ésubject, but because Hawthorne had the support of the New England literary(文学的)establishment(组织), it passed easily into the realm of appropriate (适当的,合适的)reading. It has been said that this work represents the height of Hawthorne's literary genius; dense with terse (剪短生硬的)descriptions. It remains relevant(有关的,切题的)for its philosophical and psychological depth, and continues to be read as a classic tale on a universal theme.[6] Another consideration to note having to do with the book's popularity is that it wasone of the first mass-produced books in America. Into the mid- nineteenth century, bookbinders(活页夹)of home-grown literature typically hand-made their books and sold them in small quantities. The first mechanized printing of "The Scarlet Letter," 2,500 volumes(册), sold out immediately, was widely read and discussed to an extent not much experienced in the young country up until that time. Copies of the first edition are often sought by collectors as rare books, and may fetch up to around $6,000 USD.

Much of the plot of Far from the Madding Crowd depends on

unrequited love —love by one person for another that is not mutual (相互的,彼此的)in that the other person does not feel love in return. The novel is driven, from the first few chapters, by Gabriel Oak's love for Bathsheba. Once he has lost his farm, he is free to wander anywhere in search of work, but he heads to Weatherbury because it is in the direction that Bathsheba has gone. This move leads to Oak's employment at Bathsheba's farm, where he patiently consoles(安慰)her in her troubles and supports her in tending the farm, with no sign he will ever have his love returned.

This novel focuses on the way that catastrophe (大灾难)can occur at any time, threatening to change lives. The most obvious example occurs when Oak's flock(一群)of sheep is destroyed by an unlikely confluence of circumstances, including an inexperienced sheep dog, a rotted rail, and a chalk pit that happens to have been dug adjacent临近的to his land. In one night, Oak's future as an independent farmer is destroyed, and he ends up begging just to secure 固定the diminished position of a shepherd.

This novel offers modern readers a clear picture of how important social position was in England in the nineteenth century and of the opportunities that existed to change class, in either direction. In the beginning, Oak and Bathsheba are social equals: he is an independent farmer who rents his land, and she lives on her aunt's

farm next door to his, which is presumably大概的similar in value. The only thing that keeps her from accepting his proposal of marriage is the fact that she just does not want to be married yet. After Oak loses his farm and Bathsheba inherits继承her uncle's farm, there is little question of whether they can marry —their social positions are too different. She is more socially compatible合得来的with Boldwood, who owns the farm next to hers and is in a similar social position.

The Scarlet Letter offers an extraordinary insight into the norms and behavior of the 17th century if American Puritan society. The basic conflicts and problems of its main characters, however, are familiar to readers in the present. The female protagonist, has borne a child out of wedlock and has been jailed for over three months and sentenced to wear a symbol of her adultery, a scarlet “A”on her dreat all times. It concerns about the moral, emotional and psychological effect of the sin on people in general. It’s not simply a love story or a story of sin. The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne uses the scarlet letters to symbolize the harshneof Puritan society, showing how they brand sinners for life.

The story happened in Boston about 200 years ago. It narrates love affairs between three persons. The punished woman. Hester Prynne and his husband. Who called himself Roger Chillingworth . He is an old misshapen man and a doctor. Hester does not love him at all. Another

man is a young minister, Dimmesdale, who has a high position among ministers and is highly respected among his people in town. Hester and Dimmesdale love each other. But their love is forbidden in that time . It is sinful. Due to this,Hester is punished by society with a letter A on her chest, which considered an evil, a shame.

In this novel, the mainline seems to be around the letter A. Hester is brave enough to face the cruel reality. She is always with a mind of courage. She has been alone with her child for so long , with litter communication. Shame! Hopelessness! Loneliness! Hester has to wear the letter A day after day, seven years as for punishment and ill fame.

When a woman has lived through a difficult experience, her character changes a great deal. If she be all tenderness, she will die. If she survive, the tendernewill leave her .Hester’s charitable deeds and quiet humility have earned her a reprieve from the scorn of the community. The letter on her chest represents her work on earth , always helping others, without expecting any thanks. Never afterwards, does that scarlet letter leave her chest. The townspeople no longer viewthe letter as a punishment , but rather as representing her great strength and bravery and thy say it means “Able”.

1.But Arthur Dimmesdale, his sin against Hester and Pearl is that he will not acknowledge them as his wife and daughter in the daylight. He keeps his dreadful secret from all those under his care in the church for

seven years for fear that he will lose their love and will not be forgiven. He is too weak to admit his sins. He suffers from mysterious heart trouble, seemingly caused by psychological distress. What’s worse, he is an advisor to the townspeople about their sins.

After Mr. Dimmesdale’s death , no one changes more in appearance than Roger Chilling worth. All his strength and energy has been used to harm his patient . This unhappy man has made his aim in life to add to the suffering of the young minister. When the evil old man no longer has such a purpose, the devil takes him back to the hell . It is a curious subject of observation, however, whether hatred or love are not of the same place. Each takes a great deal of emotion from one person. The two feelings seem basically the same, expect that one is smiled upon by God, while the other is worshipped by the devil.

The two lovers has ever decided to flee to Europe, where they can live with their dauthter Pearl as a family .They feel a sense of release there. However, their plan fails……When Hester dies, she is buried next to Dimmesdale. The two share a single tombstone, with a deep colored letter A shining brightly

A Reading Report of The Scarlet Letter The Scarlet Letter is written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, who was an influential American romantic novelist. Many of his works are inspired by Puritan New England, combining historical romance loaded with symbolism and deep psychological themes, bordering on surrealism. The Scarlet Letter makes Hawthorne known all over the world. Puritanism is the practices and beliefs of puritans. The American puritans accept the doctrine and practice of predestination, original sin and total depravity, and limited atonement through a special infusion of grace from God. But due to the grim struggle for living in the new continent, they become more and more practical. American Puritanism is so much a part of the national atmosphere rather than a set of tenets. A prominent characteristic of Hawthorne’s works is describing the dark side of society and humanity, which is inseparable to the influence of Calvinism on people's “original sin” and “intrinsic depravity” theory. Hawthorne is a pione er of psychological novel, who is good at analysis human’s “heart.” He focused on the ethics and the problem of evil, and advocated good deeds and self repentance to wash sin and purify the mind, and thus be saved. However, not all Hawthorne’s works are wrote the dark, at the same time in his expose social evils and human evil, he placed great sympathy for many kind-hearted heroes. As his friend, the great writer Herman Melville noted that Hawthorne's dark kept the dark even more bright dawn ahead. Hawthorne has made a great contribution on the development of American literature. The influence for writers such as Henry James, Faulkner and Malamud is obvious. Hawthorne's works are imaginative and structured. In addition to psychological analysis and description, also use the symbolism. His sophisticated imagery idea added romantic to his works, deepened meaning for his works. But in his works, some places are mysterious obscure. In The Scarlet Letter, he used symbolism skillfully to enhance the artistic effect. So it is regarded as the first symbolic novel in American Literature. Symbolism is the use of symbols to represent things such as ideas and emotions. Symbolism is

The Scarlet Letter For long Nathaniel Hawthorne has been considered to be the first great American writer of fiction. His The Scarlet Letter is one of the greatest novels in American literature of the 19th century. This is a story of crime, sin, guilt, punishment and expiation, set in Puritan Bostin during the mid-17th century. Although the story is mainly about Hester Prynne, Arthur Dimmesdale and Roger Chillingworth, during my reading, I am attracted by Hester and Dimmesdale's special child –Pearl. Her particularities are as follows. Pearl inherited her mother's beauty and characteristics. She possessed a ″rich and luxuriant beauty; a beauty that shone with deep and vivid tints; a bright complexion, eyes possessing intensity both of depth and glow and hair already of a deep, glossy brown and which, in after many years, would be nearly akin to black″. No matter what clothes she was in, she was graceful, even if she torn and soiled the clothes during her game. In terms of characteristics, she was determined and rebellious. When she was look down upon and mocked by other children, she angrily and bravely rushed and drove away them; when she was asked in the Governor's hall who made her, she deliberately refused to give the proper answer that her mother had taught her but said that she had not been made at all; when her mother ask her to come to the minister in the forest, she was reluctant to do so and even washing off Dimmesdale's unwelcomed kiss with disfavor. Pearl was so close to nature that she seemed to be a part of it. As an illegitimate child, she had no father beside her. Luckily, she was not only the child of human being, she was also the child of nature – it warmly accepted her as a part of it. Having been kept away by other children, her only playmate was nature, even a stick or a bunch of rags or a flower could become the main character of the drama in her inner world. She dared to seize a shark, melt a jelly fish in the sun and hit pebble to a bird. In the forest, the wild animal took her for their same species, for example, ″A fox started from his sleep by her light footstep on the leaves, looked inquisitively at Pearl, as doubting whether it were better to steal off, or renew his nap on the same spot.

Abstract And Reviews of Macbeth Abstract: Macbeth begins as the heroic warrior who, together with Banquo, fights loyally in support of his king against rebels. Upon returning from his victory, Macbeth and Banquo encounter the three witches, who prophesy that Macbeth shall be thane of Cawdor, and king hereafter, and that Banquo’s children will succeed him on the throne. As Macbeth knows nothing of Cawdor’s part in the rebellion, the prophecies are incredible to him. However, with the first prophesy immediately confirmed be emissaries from Duncan, king of Scotland, Macbeth’s blood-thirsty ambition has been greatly stirred up by the witches’ miraculous prophesy. And when Duncan is on a visit to his castle, Macbeth, who is spurred on by Lady Macbeth, takes the chance to have the King murdered. But Macbeth soon finds that one crime is not enough to keep the crown for him. To keep his crown, he abandons reason to mindless savagery and plunges from covert to open slaughter. He murders Banquo and kills Macduff’s wife and children and others. Thus, Macbeth has degenerated into a tyrant and mass murderer. While Macbeth flails about him, killing suspected as well as herself, in her sleep, hag-ridden by horror and remorse. Finally she commit herself suicide. Macbeth also experiences a kind of mental disturbance, haunted by the involved all the people of Scotland who are groaning under his yoke and longing for liberation. When the opposing forces march forward, the people eagerly join them in fighting against the tyranny. In the closing scene, Macbeth’s isolation becomes complete. As his castle is surrounded, Macbeth is reduced to a trapped animal and meets his final doom. Malcolm wins the kingship. Reviews: After learning this drama during this semester, I learn a lot. And here I have some points to talk about. The first one is that I am very impressed by the wittiness of Duncan’s two sons, Malcolm and Donalbain. When their father is murdered, the situation is a chaos. They don’t know who the murderer is and what their intentions are. They realize that they may be also in danger, as Donalbain says to Malcolm: “What should be spoken here, where our fate, hid in an auger-hole, may rush, and seize us? Let’s away; our tears are not yet brew’d.”So when Macbeth suggests all meet in the hall together, Malcolm says that”let’s not consort with them”and he goes to England and Donalbain to Ireland. As we can see, if they don’t flee, they may become the next persons to die, especially Malcolm, who is named by the king the Prince of Cumberland and will inherit the kingship after his father. As the old saying goes, revenge is a dish that should be eaten cold The fact also proves that they make the right decision. Several years later, Malcolm comes back, fights with Macbeth and gains the kingship. What I want to say is not that we should revenge our enemies, but that we should keep in reason, keep calm. Think twice before you jump, especially in emergencies and disorders. Another point I’d like to talk about is the relationship between Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. At the very beginning, we can see that they have a very good

The Book Report of The Scarlet Letter(红字读书报告)

The Book Report of The Scarlet Letter ---- The analysis of the main characters in The Scarlet Letter The Scarlet Letter as a masterpiece of Hawthorne, is a world-known tragic novel. The author adopts delicate description and profound psychological analysis portrays different characters vividly and deeply. It breaks the mold that American’s long-gestating novel is always fo llowing behind Western Europe’s. The social life in the early colonial period is very familiar to Hawthorne. Hence he is good at the portrayal of different kind of characters who were living under the rule of Puritans. And the novel is succeeded in shaping three types of people: Hester Prynne is a representative of ordinary women who were suffering persecution by the church. Being put in prison, publicly expose, put on scarlet letter, endless torments and humiliation stroke her religious belief and removed her hope for the church. At the beginning, what she wants to do is only to confess her sins. While she has no right to do that, which arouses her awareness of rebellion and resistance. We can see from the original work: ” But Hester Prynne, with a mind of native courage and activity, and for so long a period not merely separated, but outlawed, from society, had habituated herself to such latitude of speculation as was altogether foreign to the clergyman. The scarlet letter was her passport into regions where other women dared not tread. ” Therefore, she dare to motivate Dimmesdale to escape the secular society and pursuit their own life. Between the lines, we can see this woman’s process of convert clearly. Dimmesdale is a devout priest. And he is regarded as a real priest, a real religionist within the novel. However, he is quite different from Hester. If we use the words like kindness and rebellion to describe Hester Prynne, then we can use hesitation and timidity to depict the movements of Dimmes dale’s own mind. On the one hand, he is looking forward to having romantic love, while on the other hand, he hold the idea that he should not have any other intention except the strong belief of God. He can touch the sunshine and feel warm when Hester is accompanied with him. In the meantime, he is unwilling to leave God for a new life. As a devout priest, the barrier of belief is the biggest obstacle in his mind. There's often a tradeoff inside his

In both cases, sin results in expulsion and suffering. But it also results in knowledge—specifically, in knowledge of what it means to be human. For Hester, the scarlet letter functions as ―her passport into regions where other women dared not trea d,‖ leading her to ―speculate‖ about her society and herself more ―boldly‖ than anyone else in New England. As for Dimmesdale, the ―burden‖ of his sin gives him ―sympathies so intimate with the sinful brotherhood of mankind, so that his heart vibrate[s] in unison with theirs.‖ His eloquent and powerful sermons derive from this sense of empathy. The Nature of Evil The characters in the novel frequently debate the identity of the ―Black Man,‖ the embodiment of evil. Over the course of the novel, the ―Black Man‖ is associated with Dimmesdale, Chillingworth, and Mistress Hibbins, and little Pearl is thought by some to be the Devil’s child. It may implies that evil is an inseparable part of human being. The characters also try to root out the causes of evil. First, it is the true love between Hester and Dimmesdale that seduces them into evil. Second, the adultery between Hester and the minister arouses Chillingworth’s hate which accounts for his carefully plotted and precisely aimed revenge on Dimmesdale. Thus, the book argues that true evil arises from the close relationship between hate and love. ?Identity and Society Though Hester is publicly shamed and forced by the people of Boston to wear a badge of humiliation, she is reluctant to leave the town. Not being physically imprisoned, she can go somewhere else to resume a normal life. Surprisingly, Hester reacts with dismay when Chillingworth tells her that the town fathers are considering letting her remove the letter. To Hester, running away or removing the letter would be an acknowledgment of society’s power over her: she would be admitting that the letter is a mark of shame and something from which she desires to escape. Instead, Hester stays, refiguring the scarlet letter as a symbol of her own experiences and character. Her past sin is a part of who she is; to pretend that it never happened would mean denying a part of
